Taking a short break from holiday baking. I hope Boehner does what he says and truly but Obamacare "on the table." Good news about JJJr resigning.

Based on years of intensive research, consisting in the main of numerous alcohol-fueled debates with 20- and 30-somethings, I do not think that Republicans can ever be "cool" in the eyes of the younger generation. I believe that in the main they look at Republicans as being like parents or grandparents, old and uncool people who have money and know a lot about stuff that the kids don't fully undrstand, but expect them to take care of. They expect Dems to pander, be irresponsible, and spend like sailors, and don't really hold them responsible for it because that's not (in their view) the Dems' job. When Republicans try to be cool or to pander it is "icky," like when parents try to be cool. Doesn't work. This is not fair but is the way it is.
My sense is that the only real way for Republicans to get the votes of youth and the muddle (particularly as they get older) is to behave like the grownups they are assumed to be. Tell them the bad news, even if it hurts.
Yes, this last election was a victory for pure irresponsibility--but only by a few points and with the press working full-time to paint things as far rosier than they are. If the Republicans stick to principles, and enunciate those principles, they can recover. If they try to buy votes by trying to be "cool" by being slightly less irresponsible than the Dems (i.e., "moderate" and "bipartisan," they will lose big and will deserve it.

Jane - Mock the Media!

Jane, that gig is included with an armadillo

Boatbuilder,

That's not what John Yoo says. Kids like to rebel, and now the status quo is all about liberals.

Jack is Back!

Is it me or does anyone else see a similarity between Hillary and Miss Piggy:)

boatbuilder

Some of the people I know who have the attitude that Republicans are like parents and Dems are not to be held responsible for anything are in their 60's. And if the kids didn't rebel against this government, media and the current college administration regime, they are rebels without a clue. As far I can tell our current crop of "rebels" attacks whoever the MSM and the Dems tell them to.

Gus

narciso

No, Rosa Klebb, now one of the Spanish cable channel has a Benny Hill type variety show, and they had a puppet of Christina Saralegui, the Latin Oprah, who endorsed Obama, and she looked decidedly Miss Piggyish,

henry

Rick B, I don't know if there is a cap. What Walker, Fitzgerald (senate), and Vos (assembly) know is that whatever is put in there will be spent times 3 should Dems retake control. Tax cuts have been mentioned once or twice post election, but more in the context of business tax cuts. My uninformed guess is they will tackle less controversial stuff first, then hit things like same day registration and tax cuts later. Walker should unveil his budget in January, then we will know.

Extraneus

When Republicans try to be cool or to pander it is "icky," like when parents try to be cool.

Great comment, boatbuilder.

What if Republicans nominated someone like Putin? Black belt. Horseback-riding shirtless fly fisherman. Hang gliding with the crane migration. That sort of thing.

Or how about a Clint Eastwood type old dude? He could put those View harpies in their places without being icky, and probably do ok with Jon Stewart, too.

What about someone with a Sean Connery or Tom Selleck thing going on? Someone the ladies are hot for yet who doesn't turn off men.

Even a cantankerous Wilfred Brimley type character might have enough raw coolness to make a dent with the View ladies. Sure, he probably couldn't do the champagne tower with Jay Z and Beyonce, but someone like that might make up for it with attitude.

Just thinking out loud here, but I don't think a nerd or a totally uncool parent or grandparent image is gonna cut it, at least not before people are begging on the streets.

I suppose a woman isn't out of the question, but they're too easy to victimize on the Republican side, and I don't know how they could break through the pop culture fetish.

Remember that article by the breathless woman gushing over Obama doing curls with 70 lb dumbbells? There's no way he could lift one with both hands, but still, that piece was probably more effective than any of us would like to admit.

I believe liberty and libertarian views can be "cool".

Dems are Big Brother. Dems are racist. Dems are crony capitalists and marxists.

The GOP can exploit that if they quit acting like Dems. And, push the message CONSTANTLY. It's time to hit the beaches in the culture wars.

Jane - Mock the Media!

The GOP can exploit that if they quit acting like Dems.

I completely agree. I honestly think that if a kid with big dreams in college can choose between freedom or the chains of government, freedom will prevail. You just have to present it correctly.

BTW I was visiting a client yesterday who told me his #1 issue is abortion. He is a 50 year old male with 2 teenage sons.

Amy commented later that she simply could not imagine what would motivate a 50 year old man - a very successful businessman in fact, to believe abortion is the most important issue in his world.

I wish I had thought to ask him that. Then again, I don't need to lose any clients.

bgates

I have a hard time thinking of anyone creepier than Putin.

Just off the top of my head, Rahm and Weiner each seem to have a self-perception of Putinesque masculinity, but while Putin publicizes topless photos of himself salmon fishing in a river after wrestling bears, Weiner hides bottomless photos of himself sent to young people on Twitter, and while Rahm poses as a tough guy who once accidentally cut off his own finger in a deli, I'm pretty sure Putin has killed people with his bare hands, said hands remaining intact. So, re:creepiness, advantage:Putin.

mirabile dictu!

You're welcome.

Jim Ryan

Do the federal "payments to individuals" count contractors who are paid by their private companies? I doubt it. Billions of dollars are spend by the feds to pay companies for work. Much of the work is unessential, unimportant, or even detrimental, for example, programmers developing software that isn't really needed by the feds. To the extent that the work is unimportant or detrimental, the individuals working for the contracting companies are rent seekers. They may be talented, hardworking, and unaware that they are rent seekers, but they are rent seekers just the same.

Sue

Happy thanksgiving to all.

Well Putin is like a soccer Yob, like one of Jason Statham's less sympathetic characters, Weiner and Emmanuel, like Willem Dafoe in the early days,

I was trying to visualize the creep factor from say, my 20 year old daughter's point of view, and was only including people who had not outed themselves as actual psychos or disturbed perverts such as Weiner.

To that general age group I'd have to say wrestling a bear topless and killing guys with your bare hands still pegs out the creep meter compared to working in a deli.
BTW if he has killed anyone with his bare hands it was most likely some political prisoner.
Don't know under what other circumstances he'd have the opportunity.

Add this one to the large file of totally wasted "stimulus" money: "a $29 million harbor with no roads connecting to the town."

"Yes. It's not normal," Steve Boardman, head of the Army Corps of Engineers civil projects division, told KUCB. "And it has prevented the construction of harbors in the past, when that supporting infrastructure is not there."

There have been tentative plans to build a connecting road for years, but Jacob Stepetin of the Akutan Traditional Council says the project still lacks financial commitments from the state and federal governments and local businesses.

And along with the missing road, the harbor is also currently lacking electricity, running water, and, well, boats.

This speech by Bill Whittle is worth listening to.

(A) nuther Bub

I just hope and pray that everyone's turkey is now resting in its fragrant brine. I've been sitting here all day wearing my comb-and-wattles hat and have had only one phone call where I was greeted with "Is this the turkey hotline?" Business is slow all over, I guess.

Thanksgiving blessings on all. Despite recent setbacks, it's still a pretty darned wonderful life.

Gus

Narciso, Alred and Dry Hole.

Heheeheheheheheheheeh.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Mrs Iggie's mom brought a nice turkey up on Sunday so my turkey is resting alright, but I don't think I've ever had my gastric juices described as fragrant brine before. :)

Gus

My turkey is still cold. But not for long. 15lbs of delicious. Yum.

Jim Ryan

Cranberries. Made them rather tart this year. Was getting a little bored with having them sweeter.

Tip: sweeten to taste. Add sugar a bit at a time, tasting, until you have it right. Don't just put a cup of sugar in like the package says.

Thank you, God, for this world and for putting me in it.

Gus

Jim, I have rasperries in with my cranberries this year.

jimmyk

I prefer them tart too, but it's Mrs K's dish, and she makes them sweet (with raspberries), and I don't say anything. Discretion being the better part of valor and all that.

Gus

I've cooked so many turkeys, the turkey hotline calls me now.

Melinda Romanoff

Mix them with frozen Black Raspberries and you reduce the risk of hypoglycemia.

Or save them for the best pies evah!

Melinda Romanoff

Oh, crud. They're really good for you too.

Didn't need to know that.

Gus

Hey Melinda!! Are you eating turkey or Chicago dogs tomorrow!!?

Melinda Romanoff

Gus-

No manifold "grilling", except for sausages, double wrapped.

G'night all, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Jim Ryan

Mmm. Sounds good, Gus. I've heard of putting orange or clove, but I don't get all jiggy with it.

Ralph L

I wish I could find unfrozen turkeys during the non-holiday season--AKA 10 months of the year.

Gus

Ralph, I love turkey, and I cook for a clan every year. But if I had turkey much more often, it would lose the special Thanksgiving day feeling!

RichatUF

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

It'll be a quiet thread tonight. Hopefully I won't get caught talking to myself.

RichatUF

Wierd my comment didn't show up.
