narc, the story behind that is that Corbett has a large number of Ped State grad mega donors that are demanding he do *something* or they'll cut off the funding spigot. I swear they're making the Nuremberg defendents look humane in comparison.

There's something to be grateful for: Jim Webb is out of the Senate.

In the spirit of urgency of now, JEF left town for Hawaii without signing bill.

If he can lower the oceans I suppose he can banish the rainclouds too. In case not, however, the good news is that it's raining hard over his Hawaii manse at the moment (mine too, but I'm taking pleasure in it). Forecasts are that the wet weather will continue over the next three days. It will be a wonderful environment for bonding with MO, but probably not so great for golf.

O/T for jimmyk-

Here's an interesting take on the "free" market.

Clarice...Rangeley is west of Bangor. The Maine Warden Service photo in the Bangor Daily shows large areas of open water on the lake. I guess we need to ban thin ice.
My source in D.C. (daughter) tells me the Republicans are going to war on the debt ceiling. She works on tax issues for a well known company that some people love to hate(think big retail).

NK

MelR-- Boogie = BarryI to Hawaii -- got it. What if he doesn't sign? that moves up my 6 month projection for the end of "normal" politics.

PS: Breitbart commenters have interesting suggestions for new speaker-- non-Reps like Allen West; me likey that one!

NK

ON Topic-- TomM-- Obamacare has always been a jobs/wages killer. I don't think BarryI has ever understood or cared about that. His TOP TOP priority in Obamacare was the Medicaid entitlement expansion to shovel tax money at nurse/heathcare unions (and their resulting kickbacks to HIM) Plus Obamacare is a temp point to destroy private heathcare insurance and force singlepayer. So it is all 'working' according to BarryI.

matt

The new year unfolds with the currency wars breaking out full scale. AEP in the Telly the other day brought this up, and now we see the US, Europe, and China, beggaring Japan, Australia, Brazil and others through the manipulation of currency rates. The top of the card will feature a USA/EU/China megamatch.

This farce of a tax bill will generate another $3.9 trillion in national debt without addressing a single root cause. Congress and the president have avoided dealing with the real issues once again.

The debt ceiling debate is going to get interesting as Geithner and his allies are all for eliminating such a ceiling. That Geithner may be leaving shortly will cloud the issue. This got lost in the debate on the fiscal cliff.

Wall Street is happy that the casinos are still open and there are no real restrictions on having a rigged game and the oligarchs have dodged another bullet.

In medieval times the Dance of Death was a common theme in art and religion with Death playing the tune and leading the lost. At that time, it was plagues. Next it will be economics. The numbers don't lie. They may have bought a few months, but the monster is still out there.

AliceH

The AMT is "permanently" (assuming the Pres signs the bill, of course). That's good, right?

Seems to me, Boehner and the GOP would have more leverage if they weren't being beat up constantly by all comers. I suppose there are many who think that leverage is a small price to pay for venting and wailing, but surely some are unaware that they are undermining what little power we have to resist the worst. Then again, maybe that's the objective - not averting the worst. Whatever. Vent away.

The rain in Hawaii over JEF's house (not yours) has brought a little sunshine to my day.

Matt@12:07-- I agree with that entirely. That's why I see the end of "normal" politics. The Arithmatic of the debt/Obamacare/Medicare/Soc Sec spending kills the normal DC dealmaking, plus Bam is more than happy to default on US debt to destroy the capital/market system. IMO we will see political clarity -- meaning radicalized politics-- during the next 6 months. Be careful what you wish for...

I read the other day that the new HHS regs on Obamacare were released and they provide that employers do not have to cover more tha their employees. Since providing Fluke with free pills , illegals with free care and hiring thousands of diversity trainers will surely raise insurance costs, employees will soon learn that they cannot afford the extra cost of adding their spouses and kids to the employer provided insurance and the alternative is the not ready for prime time and still likely to be expensive govt run plans.

Townhall:
"he House approved a bill to rescind the executive order President Obama signed last week that ended the pay freeze on federal employees, which meant that some federal workers would be getting a raise—including members of Congress. A number of lawmakers spoke out about the absurdity of the pay increase and timing of the move. Rep. Michele Bachmann said in a statement, “This executive order was not requested by Congress and we should reject it. We have a spending problem in our country and we should be looking for areas to cut spending. At a time when families across the country are cutting back we should not increase government spending and add to the debt burden by giving members of Congress a pay raise.”

GOP Rep. Darrell Issa’s office issued a statement:

On a bi-partisan vote of 287-129 the House of Representatives approved H.R. 6726, a bill to overturn the President’s executive order that gave an across the board pay hike to Members of Congress and federal bureaucrats. The President’s executive order will cost taxpayers $11 billion over the next 10 years. The bill was introduced by Rep. Michael Fitzpatrick, R-Pa. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., led debate on the House Floor.

“The President, the Senate Majority, and the House Minority have not been able to agree to even the most meager spending cuts,” Issa said in the statement. “Yet the President’s executive order gives all members of Congress a salary hike on top of the $174,000 a year we already earn.”

At the Airport about to deadhead south so haven't caught up yet, but as to the Movie "Lincoln." I give it 3 Stars out of 4.

Had just read Doris Kearnes Goodwin's Team of Rivals so was all fresh on all the characters, and saw it with my 16 year old. Sat on the aisle and only saw 1 guy get up to go to the bathroom during the entire 2 and a half hour movie so that tells you something right there.

The pluses were the lack of overacting by anyone. No over the top performances I can recall, no "I'm the Star" look at me. Simply decent character roles played decently by decent actors, allowing the magnificent and tragic and desperate story to roll along forcefully to conclusion without unnecessary distraction. I thought the guy playing Lincoln did just fine. Sally Field did well enough that I soon got over disliking her because she is Sally Field and I quickly got into disliking her because she was Mrs Lincoln.

The parts that bothered me was the presentation of the Blacks in the movie. Every black in the movie was brilliant, well spoken, able to immediately recite Lincoln's Gettysburg Address by heart, super perceptive, full of Morgan Freeman type gravitas and gravitas speeches, and giving Lincoln and Thadeus Stevens the necessary insight required to achieve the passage of the 13th Amendment, which Thadeus then folded up in his pocket, hobbled home to his DC home, and then climbed into bed and delivered under the covers to his supposed black Housekeeper lover, ala Hugh Hefner and his new bride. Evidence for that? Beats me.

I do have to give Spielberg some acknowledgement and deference knowing that he has to use some devices I wish we could do without in order to get the Gettysburg Address and other stuff in there.

I will happily watch much of it again when it hits the movie channels.

Anyhow, off now to the boarding Gate and this trip I will try Grant's Memoirs. Later.

Obama will get a fight on the debt ceiling whether he wants it or not.

I really, really want to believe that. But we've been burned by the so-called GOP leadership enough in the recent past that they no longer get the benefit of the doubt from me.

Will Boehner (or whoever the Speaker is, come the end of February) really have the nerve to hold firm in the face of the wall-to-wall 24/7 MSM assault that we all know is coming? Re NJ politics
Booker will be running for Lautenberg seat. Lautenberg has been a heavyweight in the dem party but he's done. NJ barely has a Republican Party. It is weak and ineffectual. Those in power make Christie look like a hard core conservative. There is not much to choose from. The Kean family and friends have a strong grip on the party . Occasionally an actual conservative sneaks in, but he is quickly marginalized. Steve Lonegan former Mayor of Bogota is a prime example.

Clarice

Here's another view on why the deal was good.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/right-turn/wp/2013/01/02/why-the-left-got-taken-to-the-cleaners/
"The answer to why the Democrats did so badly is three-fold. For starters, the president has never been able to rally the public on a major policy initiative and he failed to do so again here, merely annoying his opponents, who dug in their heels. Second, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) knew exactly what he was doing — seeing that Democrats were so focused on one big item (raising the rate for the very wealthy) he recognized that he could scoop up a lot of goodies (estate tax relief, a two-month buydown on the sequestration). And finally, once House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) let on that there would be flexibility on taxes, he found the Democrats’ weakness: a total lack of credibility on spending cuts. Well, if they are not really going to cut much, then the tax hikes have to be moderated, and indeed they were.
The professional class of aggrieved conservatives showed that their obstinacy clears the way for a coalition of practical Democratic and Republican lawmakers to horse trade. That is the best development in national politics in a long time. Let’s see if it is sustainable."

Jim Eagle

any gun bill in IL that does not address the right of private citizens to defend themselves in their own homes will do little if anything to stop the gang/gun violence in Chicago.

The people in the firing line are helpless and have poor police protection if any. the gangs themselves are like the gun toting thugs in places like Liberia and Sierra Leone, taking anything they please and running the rackets.

I'd like to see the general stats on shoot-em-ups in Chicago. Wounded, incidents, etc. 540 killed probably means a lot more wounded and a lot more property damage.
