Another successful crucifixion by the EPA:

Obama EPA kills power plant, 3,900 jobs in Texas:

The Las Brisas power plant had been part of a larger Las Brisas Energy Center project planned for Corpus Christi’s Inner Harbor. Economists had projected that in the first 5 years of construction and operation the project would create 1,300 direct and 2,600 indirect jobs. Now none of those jobs will exist.

“These costly rules exceeded the bounds of EPA authority, incur tremendous costs, and produce no real benefits related to climate change,” said Dave Freysinger, CEO of the aborted project.

Later, when asked (off tape) to define "communitarian," Jones was unable to answer or to point toward any source for a definition. He said there wasn’t really a way to look up “communitarianism.”

He did reiterate, however, that he saw communitarianism as a counterbalance to libertarianism, which he equated to “individualism.”

Screw Boehner.

Mr. Speaker:

The House is poised to pass HR 325. I respect the sincerity of its supporters, but I must firmly dissent.

This bill accommodates spending at ruinous levels far beyond the limits set by the House budget. It sets a terrible precedent by abolishing the debt limit for nearly four months, giving an unlimited credit card to this administration.

I think members will be stunned by the borrowing that this moratorium makes possible – certainly thousands of dollars of new debt heaped on every household in America.

House Republicans have passed two budget plans that put our nation back on a path to fiscal solvency. If the debt limit were increased within that trajectory at two month intervals, it would require only small and incremental reforms each time. That would both avert default now and the fiscal crisis that we are fast approaching. I believe that is achievable and far preferable to the bill to be voted on today.

Mark F,

Up here they are on the lookout for even another Alaskan reality TV Show. Not Alaskan State Troopers, not Alaskan Ice Truckers, not Alaskan Most Dangerous Catchers, not Alaskan whatever the hell else, this new one is offering to pay $3,500 a pop to participants in the new series, but the catch is you have to be a member of The Old Believers Russian Religious Sect.

Reality TV casting call for Alaska Old Believers on Kenai Peninsula

Each Russian Old Believer family will be paid $3,500 per show to be in the series, which the producers hope to air for three seasons...Old Believers separated after 1666 from the official Russian Orthodox Church as a protest against church reforms introduced by Patriarch Nikon between 1652–66. Old Believers continue liturgical practices that the Russian Orthodox Church maintained before the implementation of reforms, and they were persecuted for it. Groups escaped to various countries around the world in the ensuing centuries, and are said to have come to Alaska in the 1960s.

I think they are the folks I see in the Safeway every once in a long while with all the gals in granny dresses and the mom's wearing head scarfs.

I tried to post this yesterday, but my links to individual YouTube videos of this lecture triggered a SPAM filter, I guess, and it got lost.

Anyway, some of the comments on one of the threads yesterday - especially those by narciso, rse and others concerning liberal initiatives in the realms of education, Agenda 21, etc. - reminded me of the interviews and lectures that Yuri Bezmenov, a Soviet defector back in the '80's, did regarding the Communist strategies of subversion, demoralization, destabilization, crisis, and normalization.

IMHO, this is exactly what we see occurring here in America right now.

I invite all of you to watch this 1 hr video at your leisure, and ask yourselves, is this really happening? If so, what can we do to stop it?

Personally, I think it's much easier to KEEP your freedom than to have to fight to REGAIN it ..... but if fighting is necessary, it's better to do it NOW rather than after they've crushed the 2nd Amendment and completely changed our culture.

Step 1. Nationalize a private market.

Step 2. Eradicate what is left of the private competition.

Right on schedule:

"Senate Democrats are moving to make it easier for consumers to expunge some student debt in bankruptcy, but the proposal faces uncertain odds on Capitol Hill.

The proposal, unveiled Wednesday by Sen. Dick Durbin, the Senate’s No. 2 Democrat, would target student loans issued by private lenders such as SLM Corp.’s Sallie Mae, Wells Fargo Corp. and Discover Financial Services. The bill would not apply to federal education loans, which comprise more than 80% of the roughly $1 trillion in outstanding student debt in the U.S.

Federal law prohibits, except in rare cases, private or federal student loans from being discharged in bankruptcy court. Consumer advocates say that has prevented many borrowers from unloading student debt even when the amount owed is so high there is little hope for them to repay. Most other types of consumer debt, including money owned on mortgages, credit cards and auto loans, can be discharged in bankruptcy."

The Liberals are in a Catch-22 when it comes to gun control. In order to arrive at the final stage of a totalitarian/fascist state, they know they're going to have to implement certain ugly policies that will face resistance. (Ayers predicted they'd have to kill at least 25 million to accomplish their goal and he was probably underestimating). But an unarmed resistance is considerably easier to crush than an armed one, especially in a country like the US, where the resistance, when it comes, is likely to be centered in entire states in the deep south and mountain west, and in places like the Smokey Mountains in Tenn. or the Appalachians in W. VA, with vast swaths of wilderness terrain where government forces would be at a considerable disadvantage vs. the native hunters and fishermen.

So they need to disarm the population first before they risk doing something that will trigger a revolution or a civil war that they could very well lose, but the very act of attempting to disarm the population is likely to be the one thing most likely to trigger an armed resistance.

So their best chance is to get people to voluntarily surrender their weapons, hence the hysterical propaganda we've been subjected to since Sandy Hook. Unfortunately for them so far the propaganda only seems to be motivating even more citizens to go out and arm themselves to the teeth. And the more they push for gun control without public support, the more they risk ruining their chances for taking back the House in 2014, as well as maybe even costing them a Senate seat or two or three=.

In the end I think they'll only try for gun confiscation if they believe they've got the US military behind them, because that is what it will take. But again, Catch-22--even if they can get the generals to order the troops to fire on their fellow citizens, and even if the troops obey, they then run the risk of turning even more citizens against them.

Fox News:

"Here are a few little-known facts about Paul Ryan's supposedly slash-and-burn budget plan.

"--Government spending increases almost every year over the next decade.
--Tax and other revenue rises year after year.
--The 10-year deficit is still $3 trillion.

"The fact that Ryan's spending plans grow the federal budget over the long term is one that could easily be lost in the political melee underway in the wake of his selection as Mitt Romney's running mate.

"To be sure, Ryan is proposing major changes to Medicare and taxation that Democrats see as problematic.

"But claims that Ryan is slashing spending don't quite square with the numbers. Those claims are convenient Washington shorthand for what Ryan's plan actually proposes -- which is to slow the rate of budget growth, but still allow the budget to grow."

No question it's better than nothing. But the people of this country will never allow it to happen, let alone a plan that actually did balance the budget. The fault does not lie with John Boehner or the GOP. The fault lies with who the American people have become.

And that is what many, many people have been urging for years they would indeed become.

Frau-Van Jones knows precisely how to define communitarianism. He is a contributor to certain books I have. Moreover, the book Reflexive Modernization I mentioned today is graphic beyond my wildest dreams. Now I know for sure why I kept encountering the Communitarians in the definitions of College and Career Ready and also Positive School Climate.

Funny. I think they really did think no one would catch these actual definitions.

Beasts-I had an older VW bug in high school that my dad was quite proud of as he had very little in it and I had transportation. That's how he thinks. Never could get him to live vicariously through me like some parents. When I asked what I was getting as a high school present, he replied "College."

Danube of Thought iPad

TK, that syllogism is absurd. McClintock lacks credibility because he hasn't said what spending he wants to cut, nor has Ryan. Ryan plays the old Democrats' game of calling a reduction in the rate of growth of spending a "cut."

You do have it pegged about the over-abundance of Alaska-connected reality shows. "Ax Men" on the History Channel has participating company named Papac Logging, that is based on Prince of Wales Island. Sometimes I see familiar scenes, and my friends up there admit to knowing a couple of the morons on that crew. I imagine that I'll wind up knowing a few of the knuckleheads too, once I'm settled. The whole island, America's third-largest, has less than ten thousand inhabitants.

jimmyk

I'll repeat: the Republicans can derive no benefit from the debt ceiling issue. And they won't.

I may have overlooked your earlier postings on this, but I'm not following your point.

I am in favor of any gimmick that results in lower spending. Lower than what? Lower than what would happen in absence of the gimmick. While I share your disdain for applying the word "cuts" to that, the point is simply that we should do whatever will keep taxes (or inflation) from ultimately increasing more rather than less.

Republicans who commit to lower spending without specifying the cuts are simply refusing to play the game with the Dems of "you show me yours first," which always results in the media and whatever special interest group gets harmed screaming bloody murder. In that situation, the best bet is to force cuts via the debt limit, or by any other mechanism from which there is no escape.

derwill

It's not only that the American people say they want cuts in the abstract, but the minute you mention specifics they balk . . . It's that, from what I understand, so much of our economic activity today now comes from monetized federal spending (rather than private sector production of wealth), that if you were cut too much government spending too fast, you would precipitate a severe recession, if not a depression. A la Greece today.

It's a debt bubble. We can't quit borrowing, QE-ing and spending to any significant degree because it will all collapse, but if we keep on doing what we have been doing--or worse, if Obama and the Dems get their way--it's going to burst. DOOM no matter what we do.

It seems to me Ryan's plan is to slow down inflating the debt bubble while doing other things, like opening up energy production and slashing regulations and red tape, to stimulate private sector growth to cushion the blow that the slow down of government spending would do to the economy. That's what Romney was going to do if he'd won and it might have worked, although we would still have had to endure a pretty bad recession before things turned around, likely costing the GOP the House in 2014. So basically they would have had two years to turn things around. Would have been hard.

Behind as normal but just caught a segment of the Dennis Miller Show that was very fun. Dennis had on some guy who was Bibi Netanyahu's former publicity guy, and they exchanged some very funny quips back and forth about the recent Israeli Election. For instance, explaining the Election, the guy said that in Israel, you don't vote for a particular guy, you vote for a Party, and this time there were some 35 parties running.

Dennis asked what sort of parties and the guy said there was one party which was the "Let us legally smoke marijuana" party. That got a big laugh out of Dennis who went off on a "how do they know if it's Kosher Pot?" riff to which the guy instantly replied that it has to be grown in a Rabbi's back yard. Very fun.

Anyhow, that got me thinking about the Left despising Israel. The Left is always out there for secularism, and do your own thing and against religious zealotry etc. They see the Mideast with it's Muslim BrotherHood Party, it's Hezbalah's, it's PLO's, it's anti-Zion Party, it's Party of Islamic Martyrs of God Party, etc, yet somehow the country they see as the problem is the one with the "Let Us Smoke Pot" Party.

It really makes zero sense at all.

Danube of Thought iPad

"In that situation, the best bet is to force cuts via the debt limit, or by any other mechanism from which there is no escape."

But all Obama has to do is refuse. Then the spending stops temporarily at the places of his choosing, the public goes nuts and the likely outcome of it all is a Dem house in 2014.

It would be tough for any company to remain in business long that engaged in the idiocies on that show. "Good" TV doesn't equal real logging.

The bummer now about the Media is that they are now all unleashed to promote Hillary. At least back when she was running in 2008 the Media had to choose sides, and they also had to keep her a bit on the back burner (no negative publicity) during Obama's second Campaign run.

But now that Obama is done, and she is out of the Administration, all their forces can be safely marshaled to burnish her reputation and devote themselves to getting her elected in 2016. That has already started (see yesterday). Biden has zero chance.

It will be awful tough to find a Dem candidate the MSM would sooner get behind than Hillary---1st woman etc, blah, blah, blah.
