To follow up on Rob's point the book Witness makes the point in discussing CPUSA members and travellers who turned to spying. They never saw themselves as betraying the US because they believed they were midwifing a greater truth and the next stage of history.

Jane, I don't think Obama sees what he's doing as destroying the country. To the contrary, I think he believes he's "saving" it, in both a physical and pseudo-spiritual sense.
I do understand that. But it's just not possible to be that stupid. Or I'm missing something. I can understand being like that at 21, but not at whatever age he is. Then again, he's never had a job...

"never saw themselves as betraying the US"
But Obungo and his ilk do in fact regard regular Americans with contempt and has less than zero concern for the suffering they inflict.
So IMO the good intentions argument is moot.

While the Khmer Rouge were shooting anyone who wore glasses and working 20% of the population to death, they thought they were taking Cambodia back to a prehistoric age of peace, plenty, and paradise.
The SS thought they were working towards the perfection of humanity while they were herding people into gas chambers.
The folks who put up posters of Che Guevera claim to be ignorant of the number of people he murdered.
People -- no matter how "smart" or "educated" -- can believe quite stupid things. The more it makes them feel superior and validates what they already wanted to do, the less likely they are to question it.
The tragedy is we have a foundation that was intended to moderate those impulses, a set of rules that let us all pursue those crazy ideas so long as we didn't force them on anyone. But we've let that get corrupted by the illusion of "perfecting" humanity...

To the contrary, I think he believes he's "saving" it, in both a physical and pseudo-spiritual sense. Which Democrat said something about government being the instrument for our collective salvation?
That is exactly right. liberalism is a godless belief system. No god...but there is still evil, poverty, crime, injustice (sin)....so there HAS to be an answer. Government/control/everyone doing what they say is the answer for libs...it is their "savior". If only everyone would do what we say, the world would be perfect - utopia.
It also explains why they hate Israel. Israel & the traditional Judeo-Christian West cannot be tolerated because of their belief in God. With God, there is an answer to all the problems of this world. With God, individuals change so societies change. There isn't a need for huge, overbearing government & laws because God-fearing, moral, honorable individuals don't have to be controlled.
squaredance wrote this on the Pravda thread - "We just weakly give up the country because of spiritual sloth, because we believe what the media tells us, becuase we did not pay attention to what they were teaching our children, because we were cowed by political correctness."
So true, so sad. We're running on the fumes of our Judeo-Christian heritage...

JiB;
Some Ferraris can fit tall guys; most can't.Most of the were built for stylish Italian autostradisti who are smaller than the average American. But it boils down to every model is different.
Selleck's car should have been adjusted. I don't remember the plane of his eyes above the windshield, which would have been sorta goofy looking. You could get a few inches of clearance by moving the mounting brackets for the seats.I remember something vaguely about that particular car and will try to recall it.
A buddy of mine was a very successful executive in Paris years ago. he had several exotics and as an ex-football player was huge. So he had them all adjusted for his height.
Somehow, he got to know Boomer, who would borrow his cars when he was within a few hundred miles. Then came a bunch of football and NBA players, who would reciprocate when he was in the States. Sort of a Big & Tall Avis.

Al Franken is currently staring at me from the right sidebar asking "Are you a person? (Not a corporation)

The irony that the left is hellbent on overturning citizens uniting collectively and voluntarily to address the government and political issues is breathtaking.
They're "communitiarians" only if it is via the coercion and power of the state or a union.
They absolutely detest voluntary collections of individuals addressing anything or even existing, but they cloak it under the shibboleth they're for the individual; the little guy.

Janet, if anyone bothers to actually watch the Yuri Bezmenov lecture that I linked to earlier (in this thread, I think), which he did back in 1983, he makes the exact same point regarding religion and spirituality, and offers it as a remedy to the subversion and demoralization strategy that the Left is currently conducting against the West. It's at the end of the video.

They frequently had electrical problems in the fifties and sixties, cc, due to Lucas [the Prince of Darkness] electricals.
In the seventies and eighties after Jag was absorbed by quasi socialist British Leyland their reliability was close to nil.
After Ford bought Jaguar in IIRC the late eighties reliability improved.
Jag is now owned by the Indian corp TaTa which seems an appropriate name for the makers of "the greatest crumpet collector known to man" [Road and Track editor Henry Manny's description of the E Type] :)

Simply suicidal thinking:
"(CNSNews.com) - Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday that whether they are male or female 'everyone is entitled to a chance' to become a combat soldier in a military that will now adopt "'ender netural' standards.
“'If members of our military can meet the qualifications for a job--and let me be clear, we’re not talking about reducing the qualifications for a job--if they can meet the qualifications for the job then they should have the right to serve,' Panetta said at a Pentagon press conference."
I can tell you all sorts of "qualifications" they can't meet, and that no civilized nation would permit its women to attempt to meet. But no one is going to talk about these qualifications, and it doesn't matter because none of these people will ever even acknowledge that they are qualifications.

There are already hundreds if not thousands of women serving on the front lines.
Corpswomen, medics, combat arms specialists. They're all out there already. They're not 11B's (infantry) but they're pulling their weight every day. If a woman can pass the requirements, they usually do okay. But there are few if any women who can pass some of the physical requirements for certain specialties.
rse, are you talking about Whittaker Chambers book? I thought I was one of the 100 people who actually read it way back when. He was not a popular guy, and he was spot on about that scumbag Hiss.
Never an apology from those Leftist bastards. Sort of like the Rosenberg case. The Soviets had us wired and there were enough out and out traitors and fellow travelers to complete the damage. Sort of like today if you ask me.
As to XKE's I will never forget coming home one Saturday afternoon to a pair of firetrucks hosing down my neighbor's XKE Coupe after the dash panel went poof. The car was engulfed; en fuego even. An ex - XKE even. We commiserated over a number of beers and cursed Lucas.
A friend had the V-12 convertible which was in the shop more than it was on the road. But damn, it was cool. I even got looks as the passenger.
A Chevy crate engine helped a bit, but the Lucas/Brit electrics were fatal in one of three cases. Better HP/weight ratio and incredible reliability but there went the authenticity.
It is sad seeing a high performance car burn or crash. Watching some of the guys at VARA or other vintage events can be cringeworthy. The cars were squirrely then and more so now. @ 1971 is my cutoff. That's when some of the truly neat cars began getting fuel injection and rudimentary safety devices. Probably the last year of true performance in the old school sense.
Nixon has his Mercedes 600; the last of the muscle cars were gasping like dinosaurs but oh so cool; and there were some real screamers coming out of Munich and Stuttgart and Modena.Even Renault had the Alpine, which is one of my all times. 4 and 6 cylinder ve-hi-cles that made cubic inches or cc's look a shade overrated.
It was the last time the Grim Reaper really made a pass through motorsports for me personally as well. McLaren and Mark Donahue gone was a punch to the gut for me. Indy was going out of control and Can Am and the Mustang- Vette- Camaro battles were gone.
Anyone who wants to talk cars, we can go off line....sorry, I'll go back to my corner now....

"There are already hundreds if not thousands of women serving on the front lines."
There are front lines, and then there are front lines. Unless Panetta is merely announcing that the status quo will remain unchanged, he is telling us that women will now go to places they have not heretofore been permitted to go. The reason they have not been permitted has nothing to do with sexism or discrimination. It is rooted in common sense, decency, and the hope that those who go to these places will have the best possible chance of coming back.

Since we're talking about high performance cars:
Before I started college I was working over the summer as a mechanic in the local Chrysler/Plymouth dealer. One day as I was leaving work I noticed this white Belvedere 3 had been dropped off on a side lot looking nondescript except for this ginormous scoop on the hood that looked more functional than the usual ones. I popped the hood and there was a 426 hemi with 2 four barrels. Things were slow in the showroom since it was around dinner time so I collared a salesman who I knew raced at the local strip and said "Have you checked out that beast?" He grabbed the keys and tags and off we were. In the trunk was an aluminum sheet which sealed off the engine and had a gasket that fit flush against the hood scoop bottom. It had a torqueflight automatic transmission with the shift lever on the steering column but the progression from first to third went downward instead of the standard way. On the inside of windshield was a sticker saying that the car was designed for supervised acceleration trials. We had no choice but go to a local stretch of a not very used road where the beginning and end of a quarter mile portion were very well known to the local car fans. We were lucky not to get pulled over since the sales guy was determined to road test that sucker right from the get go. The raw power was just incredible. When we finally got to the quarter mile, he stopped and then just slammed it. We were going well over 100 when he put it into third; and it still chirped the tires. That car was ferocious.

Sorry, I mixed comments there...

I was trying to find a picture of supertall Basketball Player, Manute Bol, in an automobile. I vaguely recalled Manute in some ad for I think VW.
I couldn't find it, but I did find this shot I had never seen of Manute swimming in a swimming pool.
Amazing how alien this looks. I really liked Manute. A great fan favorite and by all accounts a super nice guy.

This weld, Mel?
Did a seagull do the welding in that pic?

Chrysler kinda shocked the drag world with their automatic equipped drag cars in the mid sixties CH. Up til then they were not even considered thinkable but slapped on the end of a hemi they soon won title after title in pro stock and super stock.
BTW the first black dude just won a major auto racing championship when Antron Brown won Top Fuel last fall.

I love it CH!
Probably a $5,000,000 car now.

I wondered where I put that pedal. Just needs a little grinding. :)

That would be even funnier if it wasn't so true.
There were a lot of competent women in the AF, well some, but the disruption and distraction of units and moral was horrendous.

And time to retire.

Yeah Iggy, the torqueflites turned everybody's heads around. Plus when they re-introduced the hemis that just cranked things up another major notch. The original funny cars were around then with the altered wheel bases. When they used "just" fuel injectors they still would run them through four speed manuels but once they added superchargers they had to resort to automatics to keep all that torque under control.

More suicide, drip by drip:
"The U.S. military reportedly ordered soldiers to remove a cross and a steeple from atop a chapel and to board up cross-shaped windows at a remote American forward operating base in Afghanistan. The removal of Christian symbols from the chapel at Forward Operating Base Orgun-E came after a solider complained — leading American Atheists president David Silverman to send a letter to the Pentagon. 'Soldiers with minority religious beliefs and atheists often feel like second-class citizens when Christianity is seemingly officially endorsed by their own base,' Silverman told Fox News."
By all means, better to deprive all the other soldiers of the comfort they derive from their religion than to let one of them feel like a second-class citizen.
What will the historians of the future make of this shit? (They'll probably applaud it.)

I think Manute died nearly penniless because he donated all his money back to Africa to help people out. He was in Cleveland for a while because I believe he went to Cuyahoga Community College where Charles Oakley discovered him.
He was well liked by everybody.

Depends on who writes it. On that depressing note I'm going to bed.

I saw Manute in the Oakland airport once. He was wearing a light beige suit and smiling from ear to ear. He looked for all the world as though he were walking on stilts.
He is credited with originating the phrase "my bad." No one ever had a bad word to say about him.

There's also this (via Wiki):
He has a son who is 6'5" in the 7th grade.

"There is no need to leave a party that is ready to leave itself."
Here's a suggestion: why don't you just leave, and then communicate with your brethren who have left with you?
And we can offer you this deal: please stop boring us with exhortations to leave our party, and we won't bore you with exhortations to come back.
A win-win, right?
