As to focus on "high capacity" magazines, the manufactured hysteria is instrumental in getting the uninformed on board with the ban on assault weapons. Included in the upcoming legislation is a redefinition of what constitutes such a weapon, and a key criteria would be the number of rounds a detachable magazine could hold. As 70% of all handguns have magazines above 9 rounds, they may be classified as assault weapons and deemed illegal. Thus the importance of linking the concepts of assault weapons and high capacity magazines. They will be after the handguns next, should we allow the assault ban to go forward. It's not a question of if, just when.
