While Our Free Press Waits For Government Assistance...

Glenn Kessler fact-checks the very old yet new again claim that 40 percent of guns are bought without a backgroud check. He notes (as did we, John Fund and Politifact) that the figure derives from a 1997 paper based on a 1994 survey of a few hundred people.

So why hasn't anyone updated this? Mr. Kessler explains it is the evil gun nuts standing in the doorway of science:

Ludwig [One of the researchers] acknowledged that “our estimate is clearly not perfect.” He said that a larger sample size would have provided a more precise estimate of off-the-books transactions, but he and Cook were not involved in the design stage of the survey. He added that one reason why the data is so old is because the federal government has generally stopped funding such research.

“While there is no perfect estimate in social science, we’d have a better estimate for this proportion had the federal government not decided to get out of the business of supporting research on guns and gun violence several years ago,” he said.

And a bit later:

There is a bit of irony here. While the 40-percent figure appears overstated and out of date, it remains the most cited statistic on the secondary market because foes of gun control have thwarted extensive research on guns. Advocates of gun controls thus continue to rely on a flawed statistic nearly two decades old.

Oh, please. Congressional foes of gun control have discouraged Federal funding for agenda-driven pseudo-science of the sort typically produced by Elizabeth Warren. But we are talking about a survey of a few thousand people here. Wasn't it only yesterday that we were treated to a new poll every twenty minutes on the latest, latest attitude of Swing State voters on every possible topic under the sun? NO, it was last sumer and fall.

Yet now the news budget of the Washington Post, the NY Times, CBS News, ABC News, et al can't pony up for one new survey dedicated to figuring out who buys guns and where? Even though our President has promised a national conversation on this very topic?

That watchdog won't hunt.

These guys are a bad joke. I'd note they gave Romney 4 Pinocchios for the Jeep ad, even though they admitted:

Using the same standard on the President's claims, the 40% number isn't even correct (it's a round-up from 35.7), and it's being used in reference to the "gun show loophole" which is in no case more than 4%. So, based on that, it's technically incorrect, grossly misleading, and based on faulty data. What's that, six pinocchios? (Or at least it would be, if a Republican had said it.)

I have a theory - unproven - that the second coming of Barry I was a McCain moment for many left of center voters. Those houses were still there ca 2008-2009. Ran by them many times, up the long hill starting at the small gate onto Metropolitan, and then down around the bend to the airstrip. You and Soylent lived in the Alps of Kansas. I was in the Sahara of Kansas, Salina, late 50's. Dad was deputy Air Wing CO at Shilling and I was a clumsy high school sophmore. at Sacred Heart HS. I joined the basketball team. No skills but being 6' 2"" at that age tends to get you noticed especially back in those days.

My coach was a guy named Anthony Zambrusla (sp?) who had over. 400 wins. Back then ther were no divisions based on school size. A lot like Indiana aka Hoosiers. We played all the big schools including Wichita East, Ft. Hays, Russell, etc. and we had less than 100 kids in the school. Use to win some and lose some but not by much. Grat coach.

If you've ever operated a Browning .50 caliber machine gun you'll know about guns firing by themselves. The gun fires from a closed bolt, so that after you fire a burst there's one in the chamber. After just a few bursts the barrel is hot enough to cook that round off after several seconds, so you sure as hell have to be mindful of where it is pointed, unless you open the breech and jack the round out.
