With its latest headline the NY Times reassures us (yet again) that, yes, it actually has no idea what it is discussing when the topic turns to guns:
Pro-Gun Lawmakers Open to Size Limits on Bullet Cartridges
Do they mean, like, no more .44 Magnums for Dirty Harry? No, they don't. They are referring to limits on magazine capacity (aka the dreaded "high magazine clip"):
WASHINGTON — Senator Christopher S. Murphy, Democrat of Connecticut, is haunted by many things that emerged from the investigation of the December mass shooting at a Newtown elementary school. Among them is the nagging question of what prompted the gunman, Adam Lanza, to put down his rifle after killing 20 children and pick up the pistol he used to end his own life.
“We do know that historically in these instances, amateurs have trouble switching magazines,” Mr. Murphy said, referring to the high-capacity ammunition feeding device used by Mr. Lanza to shoot scores of bullets in seconds. “I believe, and many of the parents there believe, that if Lanza had to switch cartridges nine times versus two times there would likely still be little boys and girls alive in Newtown today.”
It is that conviction that has helped put fresh scrutiny on the size of magazines as Congress debates new gun laws.
While influential lawmakers in both parties view a proposed ban on assault weapons as politically toxic, lawmakers seem increasingly open to a ban on high-capacity magazines, like the 15- and 30-round devices that have been used in shooting rampages from Aurora, Colo., to Tucson, where Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head, to Newtown.
This is the "legitimate" news media upon which Joe Biden rests his gun control hopes.
UPDATE: Times editors are so on this. Their revised effort:
Pro-Gun Lawmakers Are Open to Limits on Size of Magazines
Except he had, what, 12 minutes to switch magazines as many times as he wanted. With that much time he could have reloaded some of the magazines, not just switch them.
They're so desperate to avoid the reality -- that the object isn't the actor -- that they'll ignore the most basic facts.
Posted by: Rob Crawford | February 18, 2013 at 08:30 PM
I hate to go there but there were multiple shots in each victim so where does the "would still be alive" come from?
And intuitively I knew the disarming was related to the rest of the planned Transformation without our consent but as I mentioned yesterday the need to disarm the "capitalist class" turns out to be an intrinsic part of the recipe.
About as factual as the mental health first-aid for what was being pushed intrusively anyway.

--Among them is the nagging question of what prompted the gunman, Adam Lanza, to put down his rifle after killing 20 children and pick up the pistol he used to end his own life.--
What could it be, what could it be?
May I suggest the right honorable Mr. Murphy get a Glock and an AR 15 and touch off a few rounds in his temple and get back to us on which was the most efficacious and easiest to use.
If he's stupid enough to ask the question surely he's stupid enough to field test it.

Actually - they can be immediately "retired" as deputies and still be exempted, right? Hmmm.

Posted by: Ann | February 18, 2013 at 10:34 PM
Crawford, it has nothing to do with surrendering. What a thing to say. How dense can you be?
Obviously, the point is to argue rights and to speak to their real agenda. One has to use the political pulpit speak beyond them to the electorate at large, just as they do. Does it really have to be spelled out for you? Evidently.
Pragmatics gives them the argument. With that tack it just becomes a matter of how to restrict gun usage--how many rounds should be in a magazine for "the common good", what is the proper "requirement" to have a gun, and etc. Rights become irrelevant; the sophistry and the casuistry, not to mention the MFM propaganda, is then almost impossible to overcome. The state now firmly places itself between the citizen and his Constitutional rights and now qualifies and dispenses them at its whim.
Constitutional rights are not about pragmatics and are not utilitarian in origin or derivation: They are axiomatic, as it were. That is why the Left try to force it into this line of "discussion" in the first place. They wish to avoid the whole issue of Constitutional rights. It is purely a rhetorical dodge on their part--they have no interest in rational and honorable debate or decision making. If it were otherwise, they would not have to wait for some "incident" to march this nonsense through. If it were otherwise, they would not be able to get a way with idiotic positions on rape in this context, as did a Dem Colorado State Senator did today (andremember what happened to Akins when he gave his "opinions" on the natter). Do you really think that they do not understand that the criminal or the insane will not be stopped by restrictive laws? One cannot win this way. No, this tactic just hands them our own defeat. With this we have moved beyond the rights of the law abiding, and it is makes it that much harder hard to repeal.
Typical JOMer: self-righteous obtuseness about the real matters at hand , and obnoxious didacticism about what is both glaringly obvious and trivial. Always missing the point.
Here is a clue: they are winning on this issue. They are going to push through national registration with the GOP's help. Gradually, they will destroy what is left of the 2nd amendment, and then all the rest will go down.
You are not really that stupid, try thinking a little, and while you are at it do not put words in my mouth,
Me surrender? You know nothing about me. I have a couple of metal pins in me and a metal joint from my service to this nation. I imagine that you were about 10 years old, if that, when i got them. I cannot believe that you have suffered so much as a bruise for the freedoms of this nation. In fact, I rather doubt you have even so much as ever even changed a clip in a handgun. You ought to be ashamed of such nonsense, but, evidently, you are are not up to that either.
Yet more proof that many (most?) JOMers are only slightly more attached to the real world than the Democrats. What is it about you people that will not permit you to look squarely at what is really happening in this country? Why are you so consistently wrong? Why do you demean those who try to get through to you? Why cannot you look beyond the end of your noses?
You will surrender long before I will--at the first blow of the kudgle, I'd wager. I rather doubt that you have put yourself in harms way for anything at all--not once. You, like so many here, have already surrendered; you just do not know it yet. You have not the faintest idea what is coming. I do. I have survived it more than once before.

Murphy know things, apparently economics is not one of them;
In 2001, he was a co-sponsor of a bill to eliminate child poverty.[10] He also proposed legislation that would give free tuition to students of the state's community-technical colleges.[11] He proposed legislation that would ban smoking in state colleges and universities.[12] He co-sponsored a bill that would create an earned income tax credit.[13]
Posted by: narciso | February 18, 2013 at 11:41 PM

Fat f*cking chance. You have no clue how many MFers I am willing to drop when they ring my doorbell. “I believe, and many of the parents there believe, that if Lanza had to switch cartridges nine times versus two times there would likely still be little boys and girls alive in Newtown today"
Idiot. Lanza, as the aggressor, would have simply chosen more safe positions to swap out magazines. No one bothered him when he switched two time, so what makes you think it would have been any different if he had to switch nine times?
Its the home owner confronting a burglar that is the only one hurt by lower magazine capacity, because defensive use does not have the advantage of choosing the time, location and range of the encounter - the perp does.
Its also easy for amateur perps to learn how to swap out mags. Ironically, what gets them is loading 30 round magazines the max, because the mag springs routinely create feed jams when loaded max (which is why Marine infantry like me rarely load to 30, we prefer 22-25 and the lesser chance of a feed jam).

Posted by: hoyden | February 19, 2013 at 05:17 AM
The NY Times isn't writing this stuff for us. The NY Times sets the agenda for libs. They read it like some people read the Bible. If it says that "historically in these instances, amateurs have trouble switching magazines," then that's the party line: "Fly, my pretties! Go out there and parrot that. If enough people believe it, we win!"
Btw, is the NY Times editor's bodyguard limited to one 7-round magazine?
Posted by: Extraneus | February 19, 2013 at 06:26 AM
And, btw, of course it's slower to change magazines than to keep firing from a high-capacity magazine. As squaredance wrote, that's not the point. The point is to move the argument away from one of constitutional rights.
Posted by: Extraneus | February 19, 2013 at 06:51 AM
Ex-
I think the only constitutional rights that are to be left are those in the envisioned Second Bill of Rights. "In 1988, the surgeon general, C. Everett Koop, proclaimed ice cream to a be public-health menace right up there with cigarettes. Alluding to his office’s famous 1964 report on the perils of smoking, Dr. Koop announced that the American diet was a problem of “comparable” magnitude, chiefly because of the high-fat foods that were causing coronary heart disease and other deadly ailments.
He introduced his report with these words: 'The depth of the science base underlying its findings is even more impressive than that for tobacco and health in 1964.'"

Snow in Racine?
I predict only 124% turnout at the Cesar Chavez Center.

Last evening about 20 of us sat in on the first reading of a three act play written by our next door neighbor. Think Holbrook's Lincoln. Only this is Jefferson. First act, Tom is in the President's quarters ready to sign Cap'n Lewis's orders for the L&C expedition. Act two is twenty years later musing over the long relationship with Adams. Act three is a modern day, Jobs-like black clad Tom after finding his old desk in the Smithsonian. Here he chides us on what we forgot and how, surprisingly, there are many parallels from his time.
Brilliant. Local guy that read the part had the perfect Virginia soft drawl. And the (mostly) original sounding language was easy to follow. I think it will be ideal for students, as well as us geezers.

"A pastime of Barack Obama at Camp David." Five letters, and it's not "choom.""
Duh! It's obviously skeet.
This is funny.
TM, check your server, it's acting funky.

Rob,
I also agree with you.

I also predict I will double post today.

--Ironically, what gets them is loading 30 round magazines the max, because the mag springs routinely create feed jams when loaded max (which is why Marine infantry like me rarely load to 30, we prefer 22-25 and the lesser chance of a feed jam).--
That's also the reason I went from a high capacity double stack magazine back to a single stack 7 round mag in my primary self defense gun; too many feed problems, plus the gun is slimmer and more concealable.
So don't tell the grabbers but they may be making all those law abiding mass killers, who will readily turn in their 15 round mags for 10 or less, more efficient.

--And we sure as hell are not the UK or OZ or Canada.--
Poor little DumbassDave simply has no idea how strong the anti-state impulse is in this country among scores of millions of people and so he indulges in his sad little homo-erotic fantasies.
If the state ever attempts to actually confiscate the citizen's firearms there will be a revolution.

We need a revolution.

I predict only 124% turnout at the Cesar Chavez Center.
Only if the bus from Chicago doesn't crash.

So all of a sudden the media is talking about how "closed" this administration is - because of a golf game. Benghazi, Fast & Furious and a zillion other things don't matter to them in the least.
The media should be shipped off to China on a very slow boat owned by Carnival Cruise Line.

Yes. And the closer they get to that, the more stress they put on the restraints preventing it.
Which is what has me worried -- they seem intent on pushing EVERY group they can imagine, on EVERY issue they can.
