We’ve always had a private notion of children, your kid is yours and totally your responsibility.

We have to break through our kind of private idea that Hannah and Haylee Smith belong to their father Jeff, or that they belong to their family, and recognize they belong to all of us.

I'm proud of our daughters Hannah and Haylee.

Captain Hate

Somebody sic those girls on Pat Toomey.

Good morning. http://www.invisibleserfscollar.com/placing-a-global-bet-that-psychology-infused-via-education-can-change-human-beings-and-their-institutions/

Zuckerberg data mining plays right into what you can do with all the data being generated that is actually affective and curricula that is designed to get at emotions and values.

ch-you will have to tell me if you remember the "Green City on a Blue Lake" summit.

Thomas Collins

See LUN for what lies behind the Green Book.

I can get on FB, Clarice.

Whoops! I linked last year's Obama budget book. I'll try to find this year's one.

OK. The LUN now has a link to the Federal Government's fiscal year 2014 green book (plus to prior green books for the masochists among us).

Extraneus

Cloture passed with 68 votes.

Captain Hate

No, Robin, that's not ringing a bell.

1st Amendment down.
2nd Amendment on the way down.
What next.....

Captain Hate

I still can't get over how Toomey was so malleable once Nanny Bloomie's ads targeted him. Shocking that in Ahia Rob Portman's etch a sketch principles are the focus.

But don't forget that it's the eeeeevil Koch brothers who are undermining the country.

Janet,

The 22nd will be gamed out of existence -- how can we exist without the great Zeo?

henry

carp, that should be Zero.

jimmyk

To be fair, Dr. Carson's issue isn't really 1st Amendment, but that doesn't dispute the fact that once the 2nd is gone, the 1st will not be far behind.

So 16 Republicans voted for cloture on a bill restricting the Constitutional rights of their constituents, which they couldn'thave read because the actual final text of the bill isn't actually available to read yet.

That sounds to me like 16 Republicans who should be primary-ed, and who should never see another penny or a millisecond of volunteer time from any citizen who actually believes in the Constitution.

Just so we're all clear, right?

Rob Crawford
which they couldn'thave read because the actual final text of the bill isn't actually available to read yet.

This is one of the particularly egregious points.

WTF is up with textless bills, emergency bills, all these efforts to bypass any actual feedback? They did this with Obamacare, too.

Are they trying to start an insurrection?

Magnificent gun DoT, but that price!
I could buy a best Holland and Holland, a Purdey, A Boss, a Bertuzzi and a couple of the best American built custom rifles, which are the best in the world, and still have money left over.
Is there anything those dopey A-rabs can't be sold for five times its value?

NK

Two threads of comments I find interesting here: the vast Data Mining by Zuckerberg-- (and the real kingpin Schmidt), and requiring Gunshow promoters and internet sellers to do and maintain a background check on buyers. I assure you, the gun show/internet sellers know a lot more about their buyers than any FFL background check will show them-- far more. data mIning their customers shows them what kind of weapons, ammo, accessories the customers buy, which clubs they belong to or visited, household income, credit etc etc. And if the buyer is a trafficer for the gangbangers, they probably know that too already. Background checks is a McGuffin, strawman, Kabuki Dance being used by all sides for narrative purposes IMO -- except manufacturers, they don't want to lose any sales, so they have a real interest.

Extraneus

They did it with the NY gun ban, too.

MelR-- didn't Obummer have a meeting today with Lloydie and Jamie?

matt

Most gun shows that I have been to in California are a joke these days. Not a huge number of firearms dealers and lots of t shirts, surplus, and tchotchke dealers.

half a dozen ammo dealers, most of whom are overpriced.

What was weird was that I spoke to a black gun dealer who had "law enforcement model" firearms for sale to the public. I couldn't figure that out at all.

matt

The engraving was pretty sweet on that rifle, iggy, but not $800K sweet.

And yes, there are some custom gunsmiths in this country who can build just about anything one could ever dream of at much lower prices. Remember, that Swede has to pay his fair share in taxes.

NK

Gun Shows: I assume are losing out to direct manufacturer internet sales. When did gun shows peak in terms of interest and sales? late 90s?

Melinda Romanoff

NK-

From ZH: "Did iBama get his evaluation from Lloyd and Jamie, yet?" Snort.

AliceH

Is there a list of who-voted-how? I'm not finding it for some reason -- just more summaries and other-peoples-extrapolations.

Here's the LoC page for S.649 with links to stuff but not to the cloture voting record (yet?).

Rob Crawford
What was weird was that I spoke to a black gun dealer who had "law enforcement model" firearms for sale to the public. I couldn't figure that out at all.

The guy was probably a cop. Law enforcement can buy at a discount, then resell at street prices. PROFIT!

NK

ZH = Heh!

AliceH

NK: I don't think gun show sales have peaked. What makes you think that?

Prices at FFL retailers and gun shows are almost always much much much (MUCH) lower than ordering direct-ish (they all seem to have contracted 3rd parties for it). Plus, the original manufacturers have most everything on backorder or aren't even accepting orders. You might not find exactly what you want at an FFL or gun show, but you can buy what you do find.

NK

I'm not gun show goer, so I rely on those who are for info about that marketplace. Interesting about the manufacturer/internet backlog. I'll say this for the gun grabbers, they've created an economic stimulus far better than the 2009 Obummer sham.

AliceH

Ah - here's the rollcall vote results.

Extraneus

How come Lautenberg didn't vote? Is he sick?

NK

Is Lautenberg still alive?

James D.

Thanks, Alice!

I've heard the tactical arguments about why it's better to let this go to a vote, but I'm sorry. I don't buy them. Every R who voted Yes ought to be dead to us.

I mean, there comes a point where you have to stop compromising and actually stand for something, even if the NY Times and Good Morning America will say bad things about you for doing so. Right?

If these guys can't even say "show us the final language before we'll agree to let it move forward", what the hell WILL they stand up for?

AliceH

From his statement in an article posted on 4/5:

“I regret that I will not be returning to Washington next week as I continue treatment for, and recuperate from, muscle weakness and fatigue. My physician continues to advise me to work from home and not travel at this time,” Lautenberg said in a statement issued by his office.

Muscle weakness. Fatigue. Work from home. Okey doke.

Speaking of inappropriate, that Tenn congressperv was at it again after the Velveeta concert at the White House.

So they had a Memphis concert light on Memphis musicians. Timberlake? Lauper? WTF?

from the WaPo: "Timberlake obviously didn’t have a hand in forging the Memphis sound, but he’s the 21st-century product of the singers who first exemplified
it" uh huh....

This is just another example of the liberal elite's ersatz, derivative culture. If you're going to rock it, rock it. If you're going to honor Memphis, how do you forget the origination of the sound from the delta and the touring bands that made it a Mecca for music?

Instead we get the white bread, Hyde Park oreo version. and Congressman Inappropriate does it again! Keep it real, baby!

There is one part of this bill that is clearly a Republican reaction to Fast and Furious. From the LoC summary:

Prohibits the Department of Justice (DOJ) and any of its law enforcement coordinate agencies from conducting any operation where a federal firearms licensee is directed or encouraged to sell firearms to an individual if DOJ or a coordinate agency knows or has reasonable cause to believe that such individual is purchasing such firearms on behalf of another for an illegal purpose, unless the Attorney General, the Deputy Attorney General, or the Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division approves the operation in writing and determines that the agency has prepared an operational plan to prevent firearms from being transferred to third parties without law enforcement taking reasonable steps to lawfully interdict those firearms.

Need one of those for the State Department, too, I think.

OH HENRY!!-- NY Mag profiles SWUGs at Old Yale (see link)--

OH TOMM-- one of the SWUGs profiled is a certain Chloe Drimal Yale '13 Hometown '09. She was an age cohort of my son. So this week the town's LAX Legacies made the news twice-- acquittal for assault in Mass. and now a SWUG-- we are so proud:

"An Oregon man says his teenage daughters saved his life last weekend after they somehow lifted a 3,000-pound tractor off him after his boot slipped off the tractor's clutch and flipped."

Great, but my main concern is whether they can get abortions or birth control on their health plans.

Captain Hate

Has NJ started rehabbing The Torch to return now that Yo Frankie is near flatline status?

SWUGs at Yale-- still gobsmacked by that. I guess the SWUG gals at the Ivys never looked up the word 'ennui' in the dictionary.

Back in the late 80s I went to Ken Eyster's shop to get MT Jr's M9 engraved for graduation. Ken primarily worked on shotguns that the Ohio old money boys would bring back from Europe for large 5-figure prices and then 'fix em up.' Jaw dropping work. Not only did he tune them up, but would engrave multiple barrel sets such that all had perfect scribing across parting lines, etc. I saw cases with two receivers and three bbls all perfectly fitted and matched.

AND, the owner might have to wait five years or more for the work to get done.

Speaking of Girl Power...

This photo at Drudge of North Korean Soldiers tells us

1) That 3 out of 4 Nork female warriors wear high heels, and that

2) Number 3 has had more than her fair share of grass to eat.

Plus they're a limber bunch:

henry

NK, ROFL! Pure market dynamics- more female than male undergrads, high percentage of males have non-traditional gender orientation and you get a meat market based on youth / novelty. Of course none of the SWUGs understand basic economics so the reasons elude them. (Note: we had to road trip to find similar markets and checked the numbers before deploying).

bgates

my main concern is whether they can get abortions or birth control on their health plans

My main concern is the weight involved. I don't think OSHA standards permit the lifting of more than 50 pounds by a girl that age. That's why I'm introducing legislation that will require all farm equipment - tractors, combo's, and...the like...to weigh not more than 85 pounds.

For the children.

Of course, I recognize the tenuous economic environment faced by today's farmer, so my bill will include waivers for any farm with a unionized workforce of more than 50. That will focus its protections on the small, independent family farms, the kind that is such a relic of America's past. And if any of those farms has difficulty for some unknown reason with all lightweight equipment, they will be eligible to employ any number of our newest twelve million citizens.

Listening to Megyn Kelly as the breaking revelation of who did the secret illegal taping of McConnell unfolds. I find it funny that FOX News has been trying for an hour now to get these 2 perps or their organization on the telephone but they are unable to contact them.

I am going to start flipping back and forth between CNN and MSNBC to see if there is any mention of the uncovering of these slimeballs on those networks.

NY Mag profiles SWUGs

It would be less sad if it stood for Senior WISED-Up Girls. But from the article it doesn't seem that they've learned anything. First, they seem almost proud of it; and, second, instead of saying, "This was a mistake," and warning younger women, we get

being part of this group is a license to drink too much and allows for ill-advised sexual flirtations, even if frat boys aren’t as dreamy-seeming as they once were. “This is liberating,” she tells the Cut.
Hooray!

NK

JimmyK-- SWUGs-- it's little rich girl ennui at age 21. Sad but true, but nothing more profound than that.

Rob Crawford
“This is liberating,” she tells the Cut.

They keep using that word. I don't think it means what they think it means.

henry

NK, part of thinking is avoiding jail bait. Road trips were the traditional Smith & Holyoke runs, or the train to Manhattan, (or in a pinch a walk uphill to Albertus Magnus).

hit and run

Daddy:
Listening to Megyn Kelly as the breaking revelation of who did the secret illegal taping of McConnell unfolds.

You're doing it wrong.

"I had been listening to Megyn Kelly as the revelation of who did the secret illegal taping of McConnell broke."

NK

Smith & Holyoke (head scratch??)-- what was the untraditional orientation percentages at those schools back in the day?

henry

NK, I have no idea on percentages. What I remember is that "available" numbers (at any percentage) always calculated as favorable. ;)

Porchlight

Forty years ago the biggest story in the world was that people had tried to break into the opposition party's campaign headquarters in order to illegally record conversations and that those people were connected to the President.

Now the other party's guy is in the WH and suddenly the illegality of the recordings in the opposition party's campaign office is not the story, the story is what was said in the conversations.

It must be nice to be a Dem and have the media do your work 99 44/100ths of the time.

Jack is Back (Again)!

I am wondering if there may be some internal polling numbers that are telling the Dem Senators and RINO Senators that they don't have as much to worry about as everyone is predicting?

Heh, JiB my college roomie went to Mt Herman.

It must be nice to be a Dem and have the media do your work 99 44/100ths of the time.

That's the key isn't it? The MSM are Barry's "plumbers."

And why isn't Corn facing prison charges for refusing to reveal the source, in contrast to Jana Winter, the Fox reporter.

Extraneus

Yes, the Miguel Estrada strategy memo story was "Who stole that private memo from the Democrats?"

Estrada's nomination for a federal judgeship set off alarm bells among Democrats. There is a group of left-leaning organizations -- People for the American Way, NARAL, the Alliance for Justice, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the NAACP, and others -- that work closely with Senate Democrats to promote Democratic judicial nominations and kill Republican ones. They were particularly concerned about Estrada.

In November, 2001, representatives of those groups met with Democratic Senate staff. One of those staffers then wrote a memo to Democratic Sen. Richard Durbin, informing Durbin that the groups wanted to stall Bush nominees, particularly three they had identified as good targets. "They also identified Miguel Estrada as especially dangerous," the staffer added, "because he has a minimal paper trail, he is Latino, and the White House seems to be grooming him for a Supreme Court appointment. They want to hold Estrada off as long as possible."

Not the bold part.

rse

That SWUG article is awful.

What a pathetic view of the world to supposedly be so bright.

On top of that Bowdoin report that is getting so much attention, I am wondering if this year will not be viewed later as when the bubble burst on recognizing what is really going on in so many of these schools.

And the view of dancing on banquettes nightclubbing come next year.
