I do believe the members of the Gang believe, in general, that this legislation accomplishes this.

My concern - and I'm surprised you don't feel the same way - is that Democrats like to pass a measure they deem inadequate, in order to later amend it (often via some obscure bill) into something they like better.

Jack is Back!

What the hell is with deploying armed MP's at the MTBA station off Boylston? Does that line lead to UMass Dartmouth?

Col. West makes a good point;

Let me be very clear, the terrorist attack in Boston and evolving events indicate we have a domestic radical Islamic terror problem in America. We must no longer allow the disciples of political correctness and the acolytes of the Muslim Brotherhood (CAIR, ISNA, MPAC, MAS) to preach to us some misconceived definition of tolerance and subservience. When tolerance becomes a one way street it leads to cultural suicide. Carlos Bledsoe in Little Rock, MAJ Hasan in Ft Hood, the Ft Dix Six, Faisal Shahazad in NYC Times Square -- these are just the examples I can type now. When Rep Peter King attempted to have hearings on domestic terrorism he was attacked for being racist. No more excuses. No more apologies. We are in a war of ideological wills, and we shall prevail. Congratulations to all the law enforcement agencies.

Right on Col West! BTW a NYC Dem in my office said the same thing to me (OK a lot harsher) one hour ago. He's a tech guy so he's sane, but a NYC Dem harsher than Col West. Could be a sea change.

But, seriously, I am concerned that our immigration rules, as currently written, are not enforceable (even if, by some miracle, this administration tried real hard to enforce them.) I can't see how 12 million could be deported or self-deported, without causing ourselves a great deal of self-inflicted harm.

Appalled

Who is Brian and what on earth is he talking about?

Rob Crawford

Brian is a developmentally disabled adult who has accidentally wandered into the office of his supervised living facility and found the administrator's computer unlocked.

Brian, it's pudding time. You like pudding, right? Go get some!

Cecil Turner

I can't see how 12 million could be deported or self-deported . . .

And this argument fails to apply to the next 12 million because?

Seriously, the argument is nonsensical. If the contention is that it's impossible to deport illegals, there is no feature of the current bill that makes it any more enforceable than the last. There is no logical reason to repeat the amnesty and expect a different result.

Col.West is so right.

Cecil Turner

Who's this "Bob" guy?

Your uncle? Or do you have to be a Brit for that one to work?

James D.

Maybe I'm missing something, or misunderstanding, but the idea of military troops or MPs involved in this is a little alarming to me. Between the BPD, all the local PDs, state police, and the FBI, ATF, etc. isn't that enough manpower to find one person?

Obviously if there's more to this (as others here suggested), that's a different matter, but otherwise, using the Army seems like it's kind of a dangerous precedent to me. Just as locking down the entire city of Boston for one person.

I'll be happy to be corrected if I'm not understanding something here.

Jack is Back!

I think Sandy Daze's letter to Congress on Immigration posted above makes that point about the other American countries enforcing their immigration laws to meet ours. Good point.

I say this situation we are now watching puts the immigration bill on the back burner for now.

I am not big on thing that alienate a large group from civil society. In a democracy, that's just wrong. As a practical matter, you are building a pool of the disaffected and rebellious, and inviting them to take from society what is theirs by any means necessary.

Cecil, I understand your point, believe it or not. I simply dissent.

I'm 200 comments behind, but during catchup with all the links in the thread, I wonder how many people who knew these guys and said they recognized the guys from the released photos neglected to call the police to identify them after they recognized them.

Saw a tiny bit more of CNN 30 minutes back, interviewing some friend of the guy on the lam, and he said the guy was wonderful, terrific, great friend, etc, and when he saw the suspects photo he couldn't believe that it was him, and then I sensed the CNN reporter doesn't even want to push the question of "When you recognized him in the photos did you call the police?"---so she didn't.

In comparison, today did a great walking tour in Paris with a British Expat guide, doing "Hemmingway's Paris", in the Mouftard area on the Left Bank. About 30 Americans in a gaggle. Suddenly, across the street a lady falls down and badly fractures her hand which is evident to everyone. The Brit could see the woman and her friends did not know what to do, where to go, who to call, so our guy dashes over, makes a quick analysis, then has us hold as he runs up the block to the Fire Station and arranges with those guys to immediately send somebody to give aid to the lady.

It was excellent, he got that done in about 5 minutes, we hardly noticed the delay, and I was proud as hell of the whole bunch who knew what he was doing and understood it happily, without worrying about any effect the delay would have on us.

Just thought I'd mention that. I was proud of him and of us.

"If the contention is that it's impossible to deport illegals, there is no feature of the current bill that makes it any more enforceable than the last"

BINGO!

A common INS tactic used to be to ask VISA holders the names of the people they live with. The VISA holders would turn over the illegals with little hesitation.

If we can use HIPAA to gather names and send letters demanding that citizens turn over their firearms, certainly we can re-interview some VISA holders.

If you are pointing out that the welfare, free medical care and discounted or free education illegals receive are not civil rights, I'm right there with you.

There is however a remedy for their lack of American Civil rights; they could go home and claim their Latin American ones.

I can tell you from first hand experience that it is the affluent left that resist any border security. In Southampton they (Illegals) line up by the hundreds on North Sea Road from the 7/11 down to the LIRR trestle bridge looking for work. When the blue collar working men of down island tried to protest they were called racists and hate mongers by our blue bloods and Manhattanite lefties. Why? Well because it was easier to pay them $20 all day to work the weeds and clean the house then to pay the blue collar guy from Bayshore or Islip to drive out and do the job.

As i tried to point out once at a Village Board meeting hiring these illegals puts you in terrible personal financial liability if they get hurt and decide to sue you negligence or unsafe workplace. No one there even understood the that liability but would rather create a "hiring space" near the 7/11 to make it safer to stop and hook up with your illegal-for-the-day.

It was then that I demanded that everyone who works in our home produced a US Passport or green card. If you don't have a passport then go get one and come back and see me. Also, proof of insurance and bond if you want the pool job or the lawn job or the paint job. I am willing to pay the extra just to keep my potential cost down.

Most of these elitist lefties from Manhattan could care less and that is why, IMO, you have illegal immigration without enforcement. At least one little example.

Yes and that has changed the number somewhat.I believe immigrants should be able to support themselves or have a family sponsor them They should acknowledge they have entered illegally and tell their children what they did was not the proper way to become an American citizen. Accept responsibility and don't ask for free handouts.

Rick Ballard

cathyf,

12 million is an extrapolation of the PEWke/Census Mythical Mexican surveys. I believe Mexico counts around 2 million as having repatriated. My best SWAG is 6-8 million remaining.

Deporting a majority of illegals would be no more difficult than granting them an official place at the head of the line if the will existed to do so.

maryrose

JIB:
I agree with you. Enforcement is the key. As to those who enter illegally-to the back of the line. You have 1 year to prove you can support yourself and in some cases your family. If not you have nothing to gain by staying here.

Appalled, thanks for answering. Although I disagree, I get your points.

I can't get past the fact that, even if I agreed with the your view and with the general idea of the bill, there's still no way I can believe that an 800 page bill drafted by Chuck Schumer's staff is going to do what it says on the label.

And (as you agreed), there's less than zero reason to have any faith in Holder, Napolitano et al when it comes time for them to write the rules and regs that will implement the law.

Basically, I'm opposed to any new legislation, of any kind, on any subject, until the Executive shows some interest (and competence) in executing and enforcing the laws already on the books, and until the Congress shows some (any!) degree of trustworthiness and competence.

I'm not holding my breath on any of that.

A couple of us were scratching heads over the terrorists' father claiming that his baby boy was a second-year medical student. Same here, and the Doogie Howser thought came to me, as well. But I think that it is a translation problem. The Dartmouth campus of UMass does NOT have the medical school, but it does have bio-science, nursing and medical technology. Of course, the one who spawned the evil-doers may have bought into lies told to him. Or he may have simply misunderstood. There's the old joke about the Southern geezer who bragged that his son was a trustee of a major institution, when, in fact, the son was a trusty incarcerated in a penal institution.

A Somerville mechanic who has been working on the suspects’ cars for more than a year tells Boston that Dzhokhar came into the shop Tuesday, one day after the bombings, to pick up his vehicle—not the Honda that police said they were searching for at one point Friday morning, but another one— and appeared visibly nervous.

“He was biting his nails the whole time. At first I didn’t even think about it, but looking back now—oh my gosh,” Gilberto Junior says. Junior owns an auto shop in Somerville, but asked that his business not be named. According to the mechanic, the Tsarnaev brothers seemed like “regular kids” in the past, but when Dzhokhar came in, he couldn’t sit still and demanded Junior give him his vehicle.

“He was going back and forth, and shaking his legs,” he says. “He told me when he dropped off the car it was his girlfriend’s. But later said it was his friends.” Junior says the car had no taillights, and was missing part of the bumper, and he hadn’t complete work on the vehicle when Tsanraev showed up and asked to take it. “He said ‘I don’t care, I need to pick it up right now.’
