I remember Woodhead lighting it up in the final pre-season game the year the Jets released him. I just shook my head when I read about NE picking him up, but I've been shaking my head at the Jets for over 40 years now.

Tebow is no QB. His throwing motion is embarassing and the accuracy not much better.

Good job on the shifter, CH!

I will save my B&M Ratchet Shifter story for when we manage to meet.

I'll be anxious to hear that, TK; those things always intrigued me but my buds hated automatics almost as much as they hated Frequent Oxidation Rapid Depreciations.

Clarice

That's the difference with emails now, CH. We lost touch with lots of our old friends somewhere in our 20's when everyone was mving around so much. Today no matter where you are and no matter how often you move old friends can keep in touch.

Jim Plunkett had an awkward throwing motion and ran like he had his grandma's shoes on and won two Super Bowls.
Dan Marino had perhaps the purist release ever and never even got to one.

Cecil Turner

Okay, now I feel bad about that. Admittedly poor taste. I apologize to anyone offended.

matt

Tebow got the Broncos to the playoffs and then was shut down harder than anyone I've ever seen. The man has game and will do whatever is needed to meet the team's goals.

The Jets didn't even try to use him and stuck with Sanchez even though he was a train wreck.

I just like to see the experts eat crow once in a while. I don't think Tebow got a fair shot.

I don't think so either, Matt,

And see Billy Kilmer vs Sonny Jurgensen. Billy was slow, had a rag arm and got the ball to the receiver by hook or by crook. But he didn't do it until he got the Redskins. Sonny OTOH was as pure a passer as a the NFL has ever seen. He also got the ball to the receivers, but in a far more direct route. Both were instrumental in turning the 'skins from perennial losers to winners. Kilmer got the Redskins to the Super Bowl (remember Garo Ypremian). Sonny made the HOF. And to this day, there are fans that preferred Kilmer to Jurgensen.

And incidentally, both were hellraisers.

Captain Hate

I want Tebow in Cleveland. We need new blood or we ar in for another lousy season.

The Browns are truly cursed. I hate to say this because he seems to be a nice guy who is in a terrible situation, but Brandon Weeden is as dumb as a plank. And it's not "dumb" like Bradshaw or Favre; it's deer in the headlights dumb. He probably never should have been drafted by a team with an ok line (I won't badmouth Joe Thomas and company) but garbage receivers and idiots in the front office and on the sidelines. I *really* hated Holmgren and his take the money and run performance and now we might have a possible crook running the show. I heard on the local news a blurb that we might end up having a judge run the team; better than having the league running it with Goodell being, per Derw Brees, the most hated person by the players.

What a disaster. Maybe Tebow could cause an attitude change. Nothing else has worked. Maybe Chudzinski can arrest the decline. They have to start somewhere.

Jane on Ipad

They found female DNA on the bomb material recovered in Boston. I suspect it was the wife, which is very sad. Her brother is Avery prominent Boston doc.

Captain Hate

Jim, the funny thing is that Sonny and Billy were great friends even though they were competing for the same job. I was a big Sonny fan; we snookered the Iggles by trading Norman Snead for him. He also came on board as the George Preston Marshall ban on blacks was ending and we got first Bobby Mitchell and then Charlie Taylor before George Allen came. Actually we got Larry Brown during Vince Lombardi's brief spell of head coaching before he died from cancer (Sonny even lost his gut for that season), after the team had suffered under the likes of Otto Graham and Bill McPeak. The best thing was Sonny could carve up defenses like a surgeon; I don't think he called a play in the huddle but would go up to the line, check the matchups, call an audible and it was off to the races.

To Kilmer's credit, the players played well for him and he understood the importance of beating the Pukes. I didn't dislike him but #9 was the schizz.

Sonny got a DWI leaving a party at a girl I knew's house. She and her Cadillac were in our carpool to Alexandria Junior Assembly. They had a big antebellum house in the middle of a new development that had stripped the hillside. A Civil War fort had been next door. Somewhere I have some old glass bottles and broken china from the site.

I can remember Sonny being sent out to save the day--and immediately throwing an interception. But his spiral really made Kilmer's look awful.

Jim Rhoads f/k/a vnjagvet

I too was a Sonny guy, CH. I lived in Philly from June 1961-June 1968 (with time off in the Army at Ft. Knox and RVN. But I followed the Iggles, even though I was a die hard Browns fan until Jim Brown and Bobby Mitchell left. Sonny was a regular at the Venture Inn, now a gay bar at 255 Camac Street, right across the street from my wife's apartment at 248.

He held court there most nights during the week. Whadda guy. Funny, jovial and unpretentious. Much like he has been as a Skin broadcaster.

Mercedes-Benz USA confirmed to Automotive News that “it was contacted April 19 during the hunt for Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Mercedes was asked to help find the vehicle using the Stolen Vehicle Location Assistance function on the crossover’s mbrace telematics system.“

Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Steve Cannon could tweet: “Just found out that our mbrace2 technology in the stolen Mercedes helped locate the Boston terrorists! Thanks to our amazing law enforcement.”

The Mercedes is owned by a 26-year-old Chinese entrepreneur, who told the harrowing story of his abduction and escape to the Boston Globe.

FTA: "OUSLEY: The attack began on September 11th, 2012 at a diplomatic compound in Benghazi and culminated roughly seven hours later at a second location, a CIA annex about one mile away.

While the official responses from Washington have been that the assets could not have made it from benghazi in time that killed Woods and Doherty, there were at least two military units that could have made it in time including the one training in Croatia.

SO: Besides those guys who went in on their own, we had two more assets that could have been there. Two more assets that could have been on the ground. It's frustrating, upsetting especially being in the community. The hardest thing to deal with in any kind of, you know, dangerous scenario or gun fight, is, you know, we always look to each other to help each other and that's how we get through situations. It's not about the assets overhead. It's about the guys on the ground.

HOUSLEY: He also says as the attack began there were at least 15 Special Forces and highly skilled State Department security staff available in the capital Tripoli who were not dispatched even though they were trained as a quick response force.

Meantime, a group of American reinforcements also in Tripoli, which included the CIA's global response agent Glen Doherty and seven others took matters into their own hands. This is a little known fact which contradicts the State Department'se report. The team commandeered a small jet and flew to Benghazi while still under fire. Doherty would eventually be killed on the roof along with his friend Tyrone Woods."

Captain Hate

Yeah, Ralph, I remember sometimes Sonny coming into a game and not being able to pull the team's fat from the fire. The fact was the Skins were a good, fun and exciting team, but not a great one. It took HOF Joe Gibbs for that to happen.

Both Sonny and Joe Theisman had sons at my nephews' school in Alexandria (which both RalphL and I attended). Sonny would volunteer as an assistant coach, working particularly with the QB's. Marvin Bush's kids also went to SSSAS, as it now is. You can tell from the alumni mag that it's as PC as they come now. 1. If a guy goes back to outer Kajerkistan and gets training for several months and then returns here and kills some of us, how is he still a lone wolf?
2. How many lone wolves does it take to make a pack?

Captain Hate

My father didn't think Lefty had enough class to coach at Davidson, yet he never forgave him for leaving for Maryland

Well he graduated from Duke so there's no escaping that. Lefty made Maryland basketball a major deal while I was there. During his first season, you could just give your student ID to get in at game time. I remember going to a game over Christmas break where there were lots of empty seats against Duke; the Terps won on a buzzer beater by Will Hetzel that was part of a building buzz of excitement. By midway through his second season you had to get tix in advance. He was a better recruiter than he was a bench coach, but he was pretty good at that.

He left under really unfair circumstances considering there were lots of other people more responsible for Len Bias consuming a fatal amount of blow. Lefty wasn't responsible for the school receiving the NCAA death penalty; that happened under that idiot Bob Wade. Gary Williams worked really hard to bring Lefty back into the fold because you can't talk about Maryland basketball without Lefty.

I remember Lefty's Davidson team with Mike Malloy; they were an exciting team who just barely lost to Dean Smith's Carolina team with Charlie Scott. That team surely put him in the national spotlight.

"I don't remember ever seeing the original school site. In 63-5, my older brother went to K&1 at Mrs. Boyd's school, which was in big Victorian on a big lot with trees across Braddock Rd from the turn to St Agnes."

I went to Mrs. Boyd's for 1st grade in 1946-47, then to St. Agnes for 2nd grade (yes, I am one of very few who attended both schools). During those years my sister was at St. Agnes and my brother at St. Stephen's. My teacher at Mrs. Boyd's was the lovely Marguerite Moss Martin, who became terribly upset with me one day when I leaned way over so that I could look up her skirt. I didn't mean any harm; she was just so beautiful that I wanted to see more of her. Who wouldn't?

I played with John McCain every day in the swimming pool at the Army-Navy Country Club in the summers of those years. He was very enamored of my sister, and I think he was especially kind to me (five years his junior) for mildly ulterior reasons.

While at St. Stephen's I learned Latin, American history and football. Sleepy Thompson taught me baseball. For those things I have been grateful to the school from that day to this.

Had an interesting conversation yesterday. The person told me he was a liberal - then sat back and said, "well not on fiscal issues". So I said "So you are really a libertarian" and he agreed.

A libertarian is really a conservative and should be courted as such. I could tell he thought it was more appropriate to say he was a liberal. He confided in me that his wife always says to him: "YOu are such a conservative". I asked him if he had heard of the Gosnell trial - his look turned to horror even while he said he knew little about it.

I think we can court libertarians and should. I think we should encourage people to admit to being libertarian. Liberals try to shame people who don't say they are liberals, but libertarians escape some of the wrath because it is all aimed at social issues.

LIV voters don't want to be known as conservatives, but they may be quite content regarding themselves as libertarians.

OldTimer

Polls declare over 85% of the American people "believe in God".

If this were true, JiB, wouldn't our own 'evil empire' be run out of DC on a rail by now? It shocks and saddens me that Obama & Crew are able to flagrantly ignore the rule of law, time-tested moral absolutes and common decency.

I hope and pray there is still a silent majority waiting in the wings for the 2014 Congressional elections...

Jane-not just LIV. The female Big Firm lawyer brigade can deal with classifying me as libertarian but not Conservative.

I would actually classify myself as a Burkean/Revel classical Liberal but then history does not seem to be a stong suit for even the best of the credentialled these days.

It's why I found that Kegan comment about Yale so interesting yesterday. Our best and brightest already think ideologically instead of from facts. And it's now so entrenched they know no other way.

You have to be careful there, Jane; i.e., trust, but verify.

Of all people, a liberal's liberal, Geraldo Rivera, claims disingenuously to be a libertarian. John Stossel would have people believe that he is a libertarian (wink, wink), too. Back in the 90's, it was chic in some northeast circles to claim to be a libertarian.

The only irreconcilable difference between conservative Republicans and libertarians, I suspect, is due to libertarians' insistence on isolationism in foreign affairs. I think that's a naive extension of the notion of self-reliance to countries, one that disregards the idea that it can be in our self-interest to exert our influence and power abroad. Libertarians seem to think we can be like Switzerland in foreign affairs.
