Danube of Thought

there was a palpable political nervousness about appearing too indiscriminate in seeking manual recounts

Why?

Clarice

Why, indeed, it didn't bother the Fla Supreme Ct and probably only bothered the SCOTUS when it was clear vote manufacturing, not counting, was going on.

Anyway Al Gore now has $200 million extracted from dummies and seems to have spent it on limos, large houses, private planes and giant ice cream sundaes.

glasater

The votes eventually were counted - every last one of them - and Bush won.

Rick Ballard

Clarice,

He is a SCAMster of great skill, Bairstow is no slouch in that department, I first became aware of him, in a Arch Puddington piece, where he pointed how in order to rubbish Guiliani's NYPD
anticrime campaign, he portrayed a number of hoods as victims. Then he went international, with that witchhunt against military experts who dare not declare 'We're toast' in Iraq.

NK

Come on really? the selective recount was a David Boies litigation special-- Wednesday morning the Dems knew that they'd lose any statewide recount, so they went to THE BRAIN for a strategy for a selective recount they could win on in court. If my recollection is correct, every effin' court, State and Federal ruled correctly on these issues except for the Fla State S Ct-- TWICE. There was NO constitutional or statutory dilemma, the whole thing spun out of control because of 2 idiotic Fla S Ct decisions to first ignore clear Fla state election laws, and then deny equal protection rights to millions of Fla voters. Jeez.

jimmyk

I had to doublecheck to make sure I hadn't accidentally clicked on JOM archives from 10 years ago. Why is Megan talking about this now?

NK

The Miami Herald article was interesting-- it was a reasoned piece (the gratuitous redneck crack and the missleading KSM waterboard count aside)-- and it ends with the correct issue: "And it surely is not good for either the soul of the person doing the torturing or those in whose name he does it. But these are moral questions. As long as we pretend that the question of torture is a utilitarian one — that it doesn’t work — we will never confront its morality." Waterboarding, and lesser enhanced interrogation are NOT torture because of their explicit purpose -- intel gathering under exigent circumstances in order to protect the innocent who are are at risk. Waterboarding and lesser methods would be torture if they are used to gratuitously punish or torment the subjects.
AbuG is a perfect example of mindless gratuitous torment-- that was 'torture'. National morality and honor were preserved by Bush-Cheney's carefully defined and very limited use of EI methods-- especially waterboarding-- because of their proper and just purpose. There was no scandal there. Now... as to the faux moralists who to this day libelous scream 'torture', they are preening phonies.

Thomas Collins

Quite an after the fact rationalization by TeamGore. Exhaustion? Pressure? BS. TeamGore thought its best chance to win was in the Dem counties. A later analysis by major media outlets showed that Gore's best chance would have been in a statewide recount. Al will just have to console his chakras with the money he has made from the global warming scam.

Dana Gilber Ward

Looks like his Chakras have been consoled with Chocolate cake to me.

NK

'Best chance'-- Gore came closest in a Statewide recount... but he was a loser nonetheless.

narciso

Yes, he's still too squishy, but this is the paper with Carol Rosenberg gitmo bar defender extraordinaire, Lasseter who came up with another whitewash of released detainees.

NK

OT-- the Debt Bomb-- article in Bloomie by a big time Dem cheerleader Journo; Ryan is handling things right-- no budget deal-- the House has passed its Budget, the Senate theirs-- no 'grand compromise'-- the debt limit runs out again in August-- time for another sequester or other cuts of $100M or so then-- let the Dems come hat in hand then for higher debt limit-- until then do nothing-- Impossible to explain this too the LIVs---when the Debt Bomb goes off-- they'll know it, then the law of arithmatic takes over.

Screw Bill Gates and Warren Buffet both.

There. I said it.

NK

OL-- the 2 of them are worth what $80B between them, say if they had to liquidate, it's down to $65B-- they can gift that $65B to the treasury to payoff US national Debt ANYTIME THEY CHOOSE. Until they do that.. as you put it... screw 'em.

Rob Crawford
The goal of all these leftist programs is to destroy the USA financially.

I don't think they care how they do it.

Old Lurker

NK the Gates comment that pushed my button was “to get a little bit more from them proportionately than you get from people as a whole,”

So the top cohort paying 80% of all income tax already is not???

sbwaters

No one said Bill Gates was smart.

Old Lurker

And NK if they did as you suggest and threw their entire holdings into the pot, do you think when they realize that their generosity did not cover the deficit long enough for their checks to clear the bank, do you think that the guy who gave us Windows 8 might conclude we have a spending problem, not a taxing one?

Janet

even Meeka was slattering Harpootlian's dumbass not-thinly-veiled bigoted remarks on Nikki Haley.

THat's not good enough for me. If he was a Republican every single Republican would have to be answering questions. There's be Sikh immigrants interviewed all over TV. The entire Republican party would be tarnished with his racism & women hatred. There'd be screaming headlines for months.

NK

Bill Gates knows what he's doing and saying-- it's to stay in the 'big philo game' with the other foundations and UN. Buffett is just being a good crony, and paying back the DC machine.

Free State Paul

The 2000 Election radicalized me.

Up until that point, I tended to take the high road with Democrats. I didn't agree with them, but assumed they were mostly honest and honorable people. When the Florida vote looked too close to call, I thought, "Let's do the right thing and recount all the votes and see who wins."

But then I saw on the news that Gore had sent an army of lawyers to Florida armed with a 6-page memo on how to disqualify military absentee ballots. Suddenly, I realized for the first time that this was war, not politics. That nothing was beneath our opponents, and we needed to be equally ruthless to survive.

I've been a changed man ever since.

I have actually corresponded with Wu numerous times. He is a wonderful mathematician.

BUT the critical aspect of that post is that there is a distinction between the standards and the testing. Um, the testing drives what goes on in the classroom so what they are writing about has virtually nothing to do with the classroom mandate. Plus Brad Findell and NCTM one their point that the assessments be driven by applications not math as an abstraction.

Plus the math practice standards were incorporated by reference and the teacher evals are based on those practices in the classroom.

It is not wrong so much as irrelevant to the actual classroom mandate.

I have seen the math curricula. Gates' foundation funded it and had the Shell Centre in the UK prepare it and I screen grabbed and hard copied that as well as all the math progressions just as soon as anyone saw them.

I have to run out with Red but can answer more later.

Extraneus

THat's not good enough for me. If he was a Republican every single Republican would have to be answering questions.

Exactly. Dems work as a team. They all feel it, and they know what to do when opportunity knocks. Republicans don't seem to have it in them. They're more independent of each other.

Janet

narciso's 3:56 link is something. Colbert Busch sounds just like Phony Cherokee Warren! Oh my goodness. Her answers are vague & she just repeats the same stuff over & over even if it doesn't answer the question.

NK

Drudge links to Graham saying Benghazi dam to burst, as bad as watergate... true..true.. yet Graham wants to give these same crooks the power to open the Immigration floodgates. Is Graham that stupid he can't make the connection?

narciso

That was rhetorical, NK, Graham and McCain allowed what began as an uprising at Ali Salim

Two shrill, screechers of CNN/HLN tv news - Ashleigh Banfield and Nancy Grace make utter fools asses of themselves on live tv.

Pay special attention to the vehicles passing by behind each of them in their live, on location spots.

lmao. They could have just done their live shot standing together!

anonamom

That interview with Colbert Busch is pathetic.
It was A-OK for her to bring up Sanford's affair during their debate, but his supporters are not supposed to bring up the time she was arrested for losing it in a custody hearing?

She's an awful actress too--comes across as completely insincere as she simply repeats the same soundbites.

narciso

LOL, central, but their egos need to be atleast 100 ft apart at all times.

At the time many of us thought Hillary looked terrified as she got up and lied in front of the coffins. We assumed because she knew that this major eff-up would end her career.

I think she was indeed terrified at the time, but later was able to sit back and laugh at how the pliant press didn't even make a peep.

Muslim terrorists should not have been killed? There really were no Muslim terrorists, or at least not in Iraq? Iraq was a great place when Saddam and his sons were in charge, killing and raping innocent Iraqis, having their tongues cut out by government surgeons, hanging them up on meat-hooks at Abu Ghraib?

Relax, Magwa. Make your point.
