Wait. I'm confused. The blah blah was me. I hate King James. And his sniveling side kick Dwayne Wade.

Jim Rhoads f/k/a vnjagvet

The clip from face the nation linked above was an eye opener for me. Keeping in mind that CBS's Sheryl Atkinson has kept Benghazi in the MSM target zone, watching Schieffer demeanor and the way he reported the story leads me to believe that there may be a there there. Schieffer seemed genuinely disturbed about the testimony of Greg Hicks, and also seemed to credit the Steve Hayes timeline and conclusions.

Issa also handled himself well by not overhyping the story.

All in all, I am temporarily encouraged.

Ignatz

--Both the general (and common) argument and the illustration-by-extreme divide the world into two categories. What I have been trying to point out is there is a huge third category that is excluded here - and it is a very important category, I think - childless adults who nonetheless feel a bond to other people's children. This group of people are not "exceptions". I think the non-parents who do not have a bond or reason to care about the future are the exceptions.--

Here is what I said:

Which world would care more about the future consequences of ones actions as opposed to the here and now; one in which no one could reproduce and there were no children or one where every man was married to a woman and they had 2.1 kids and eventually grandchildren?
The seemingly obvious answer confirms my generality, if not the many exceptions to it, of which you apparently are one.

The generality I was proving was that parents naturally have more invested in their children's future and care more about what happens to them. Nowhere in discussing the real world did I mention this vast mythical group of people who do not care at all that you keep referring to and assigning to my argument.

I agree that people who don't care about the future at all are a small group. Where have I said otherwise?
I said you must be the exception as one of those people who cares as much or even more for others kids than their own parents do. If you are, I'm sorry but that is fairly exceptional.
And with that I've pretty much exhausted what I have to say on the subject.

Sue

TC,

I think I'll just talk trash. I hate bets.

narciso - One of things that fascinated me about Frank Rich when I was reading him in the NYT is the way he abused metaphors.

It is a common kind of mistake -- I put up a post earlier today mentioning a mistake in the Seattle Times (and recycling a classic political joke) -- but Rich's mistakes were so common that I began to think they were deliberate.

There is no reason to think that a theater critic has anything especially useful to say about politcs -- but you would think the critic would know how to write.

His abuse of metaphors was so bad that, after a while, I stopped writing posts about his columns, because I always added long parenthetical sections correcting some of his writing errors.)

Trash talk is fine too, Sue. Let's just hope we have some trash to talk in September and October. I'm still not convinced the Red Sox are for real, but I'll be happy to be wrong.

I guess I don't understand this citizenship stuff. If Cruz is eligible by being born in Canada to an American mother then why is Obama not qualified, if in fact, he was born in Kenya to an American mother?

Neo

Harper Lee, the reclusive author of To Kill A Mockingbird, has sued a literary agent, claiming that he tricked the ageing writer into assigning him copyright on the classic book.

The move marks a rare step into the spotlight for Lee, who is known for keeping a low profile for such a household name, living quietly in a tiny town in the deep south of America and eschewing almost all media requests.

However, in a shock move, 87-year-old Lee has now filed a lawsuit in a Manhattan court alleging that Samuel Pinkus, the son-in-law of Lee's long-time agent, Eugene Winick, tricked Lee into signing over the copyright on the book.

LUN

Porchlight

If Cruz is eligible by being born in Canada to an American mother then why is Obama not qualified, if in fact, he was born in Kenya to an American mother?

JiB,

Can't answer for its veracity, but regarding the citizenship of a child in such circumstances what I've read is summarized here:

Obama’s American citizen parent, Ann Dunham, had to have been a resident of the United States for 10 years, at least five of which were over the age of 14. Dunham did not meet that requirement (of the Nationality Act of 1940, revised June, 1952) until her 19th birthday in late November of 1961, almost four months after Obama was born.
Neo

We have never been a people who place all of our faith in government to solve our problems; we shouldn't want to. But we don't think the government is the source of all our problems, either.

... lost me here ...

Because we understand that this democracy is ours. And as citizens, we understand that it's not about what America can do for us; it's about what can be done by us, together, through the hard and frustrating but absolutely necessary work of self-government. (Applause.) And, Class of 2013, you have to be involved in that process. (Applause.)

The founders trusted us with this awesome authority. We should trust ourselves with it, too. Because when we don't, when we turn away and get discouraged and cynical, and abdicate that authority, we grant our silent consent to someone who will gladly claim it. That's how we end up with lobbyists who set the agenda; and policies detached from what middle-class families face every day; the well-connected who publicly demand that Washington stay out of their business -- and then whisper in government's ear for special treatment that you don't get.

That's how a small minority of lawmakers get cover to defeat something the vast majority of their constituents want. That's how our political system gets consumed by small things when we are a people called to do great things -- like rebuild a middle class, and reverse the rise of inequality, and repair the deteriorating climate that threatens everything we plan to leave for our kids and our grandkids.

US Code stole that requirement straight out of the sam ECL that the Founding Fathers were familiar with.

If secondhand smoke was as dangerous as people say it is, then, given that once upon a time many many more Americans smoked, and smoked a lot, and smoked everywhere - we would all know a non-smoker who dropped dead of lung cancer or emphysema at a young age.

But we don't.

One of my closest friends from grammar school has a dad who smoked like a chimney inside, and a wife and two daughters with serious asthma. The mom also drank enough to probably qualify as an alcoholic. When she was in her 50's she went in the hospital with trouble breathing. She was overweight, so they were just SURE that she had heart disease and congestive heart failure, but every test they did for heart stuff came up clear. Still, every time she laid down she couldn't breathe. Finally after a week of tests they figured out that she had lung cancer. She was dead within 24 hours of diagnosis.

She had never smoked at all except for 2nd hand smoke.

peter

Yes, I have heard of nightclub workers dying from lung cancer without ever having smoked themselves.

Jane on Ipad

Sue,

I know exactly how that feels!

Skoot

Lots of people who have never been smokers or exposed to 2nd hand smoke develop lung cancer. It's pretty common in women especially. I think something like 15-20% of cases.

From TK's link at 8:36 p.m.:

Q You’ve got two certified copies, according to this study. You have these physical --

MR. PFEIFFER: Yes. I showed you one. Just one.

Q You showed us a photocopy of one.

MR. PFEIFFER: No, I showed you --

Q Does that have a stamp?

MR. PFEIFFER: It has a seal on it.

Questions? If so, please let me refer you to the crack investigators of the corrupt Cold Case Posse, who in the two-plus years since that press gaggle have surely sought to identify and question all those who were present, and to determine whether, in fact, Mr. Pfeiffer was lying to them when he said he had showed them the sealed certified copy.

Danube of Thought

One mom passed a loyalty test and the other mom didn't.

It is not a "loyalty" test, it is a residence and age test applied to determine whether the child was a citizen at birth. And the mom who supposedly did not pass it was not required to do so, inasmuch as her child was born in the United States and was therefore, by ancient common law and modern statute, a natural born citizen of the United States.

Who cares at this point about Obama's Birth Certificate? It's done and over and has zero relevance. The man is guilty of a cover up, certainly, but that is true of his entire narrative. The press and the American people don't care. Let's move on.

Now indicting him as an accessory to murder or for the coverups in F&F and Benghazi is a horse of a different color entirely.

Forged? Flawed? We await the evaluation of the crack investigators at the corrupt Cold Case Posse, who in two years have had nothing to say about it. Why is that?

Captain Hate

During Watergate, did people on the right think it was a set-up?

I remember Father Hate, who used to call the WaPo the Downtown Daily Worker, was extremely disappointed that Nixon lied about things. I imagine that he thought a lot of people who supported Landslide Lyndon and were shocked by Watergate were raging hypocrites but that's cobbling a bunch of memories together rather than a direct quote.

Threadkiller

The press was shown a "hard copy" and yet they, in the course of a very short press gaggle, could not tell the difference between a stamp and a seal?

And Pfeiffer, at the point of the follow up question, could not show it again?

So much for verification.

Here is the concern that brought us the follow up question :

Q And this is going to sound -- I mean, you can just anticipate what people are going to -- remain unconvinced. They’re going to say that this is just a photocopy of a piece of paper, you could have typed anything in there. Will the actual certificate be on display or viewable at any -- (laughter.)

These reporters have no idea what they were looking at, hence the questions. They have no record thanks to the rules:

"MR. CARNEY: Good morning, everybody. You can read the paperwork we just handed out in a minute. Let me just get started. Thank you for coming this morning. I have with me today Dan Pfeiffer, the President’s Director of Communications, as well as Bob Bauer, the President’s White House Counsel, who will have a few things to say about the documents we handed to you today. And then we'll take your questions. I remind you this is off camera and only pen and pad, not for audio. And I give you Dan Pfeiffer."

"The AP image means what?"

It means that, unless it has been contrived in some fashion, it is an exact replication of the document that it purports to represent. Not even the nutballs have claimed that it is not precisely that.

In my day, I got into bars with phony ID's that probably even the looniest Birther could rightly identify as bogus. But a bar patron is charged only with satisfying a single barkeep. The White House undertook to satisfy an entire group of press people and, through the miracles of photography, the photocopier and the internet, untold millions of citizens. Is it any wonder that additional mediums were employed, over and above the mere flashing of a 2" x 3" card to a bartender?

But one can always be sure that the crazies will latch on to nonsensical irrelevancies, while assiduously ignoring and refusing to answer the many questions put to them about their nonsense.

Does Professor Tribe, an avowed partisan Democrat, explain the true constitutional meaning of natural born citizen in a manner flatly contrary to his own partisan interest re McCain? Not to worry--he's untrustworthy. Does Obama produce for inspection his entirely sufficient "short-form" certificate in 2008? Oh, piddle--the people at factcheck.org who examined and photographed it were not sufficiently expert. Does the White House produce a certified copy of the long form to the press, and distribute photocopies of it to those assembled? Well, never mind: the photocopies wouldn't get you into a bar, and anyway one of the reporters didn't know the diffelrence between a stamp and a seal.

This is the kind of thing that keeps them going. What do they accomplish? Well, to the extent that they are associated with Republicans, they make Republicans look damn stupid. And at all times, their principal arm--the corrupt Cold Case Posse--declines to pursue any inquiry, or interview any witness, who might tend to expose their crazy shit for what it is.

That was a wretched little hit, Brian De Palma carried out on my paisans, Janet, with Pacino doing the worst accent until Rod Steiger did a worse one in the Specialist, Pfieffer was only slightly less aggravating then him.

Gus

Bob Schieffer like almost every libtard alive, purposely ignored all the OBVIOUS evidence of the Benghazi cover up. Now Obama is joyously proclaiming Jason Collins a Gay hero.

Christopher Stevens was our Ambassador. He was gay. He was murdered. Obama and Rodham lied and covered up his death.

DoT on iPad

"Residency and age test??? Hahahaha! Why do they need a test for that? They don't for fresh off the fence anchor-babies."

Perhaps you should ask yourself who "they" are. The residency and age tests are imposed by acts of congress, who managed to impose them without using the word "loyalty." The "anchor babies" are citizens by reason of the 14th Amendment to the constitution, which also contains no such word.

But when a Birther is at full gallop, reason is a detour.

Captain Hate

Good to hear about Hayes, Gus. I've always liked his writing and his sporadic appearances on FNS. The JEF and Rodham were banging that video garbage well after the intelligence reports put an end to that nonsense. Rodham was probably worried they'd deport Huma if they suspected her of forwarding the intelligence briefings to her mooooslim brotherhood relatives and she'd have to dry out to attract a new lesbian girlfriend interview a new aide.

Speaking of Janet's post on that immigration abomination, there was a thread @ AoS yesterday about Mark the Rube possibly being snookered about the contents of the bill that I was late to getting to. A couple fellow morons posted that anybody that thinks the Rube didn't know what was in it is just fooling him/herself. I'd like to think that Rubio is a good guy who just got taken advantage of by Schoooooomer and McRINO but that might be naive on my part. I assume the bill is huge and has been developed by the staffers of the Senators. Is it possible that Rubio has some really really underhanded operatives working for him that misled him of what was in it?

One of my daughters, a flight attendant when smoking was still permitted on airplanes, said something I thought was interesting. She said that the senior cabin crew always had a dilemma in choosing which part of the cabin they'd work, since that choice is based on seniority. She said that the air in the smoking section was terrible, and that was a disincentive, but that the passengers were so much more cheerful, pleasant and fun to be around than those in the non-smoking section, where one could breathe more easily but have to deal with sour puss grumps and complainers.

I realized when she said that that most of the people whose company I really enjoy are smokers or ex-smokers. If I ever go for a Ph.D., that's going to be my area of research and dissertation -- the character and attitude difference between smokers and non smokers. I'm an ex-smoker, but went kicking and screaming into the clean-air abyss. If I get to heaven I will expect smoking to be encouraged there.

Jusitia weeps: "Guilty as hell and free as a bird" Billy the Bomber continues to carp on the U.S.

The United States is the most violent country that has ever been created, Ayers said.

U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., committed daily war crimes in Vietnam “and I get asked about violence when what I did was some destruction of property to issue a scream and cry against an illegal war in which 6,000 people a week are being killed,” Ayers said. “Six thousand a week being killed and I destroyed some property. Show me the equivalence. You should ask John McCain that question … I’m against violence.”

“To conflate a group of fundamentalist people [in Boston] who are nihilistic in some way with a group of people who spent their lives trying to oppose the murder of 6,000 people a week … and still the killing went on. And still the killing went on. What would you have done?” Ayers said. “There’s no equivalence [with Boston]. Property damage. That’s what we did.”

The preezy is a tool but Ayers is pure evil.

This is from his statement in 2004, back when Amnesty was but a gleam in John McCain's eye;

Moreover, over the past 8 years, more than 2,000 men, women, and children have died attempting to cross into America and seek the opportunity to work and achieve a better life. The status quo is unacceptable and clinging to the status quo - or tougher versions of it - is neither conservative, nor principled. In reading the Telly this evening, their religion blogger noted that next Sunday, the Church will canonize 800 saints from Otranto.

In 1480, long before the Battle of Lepanto, Ottoman legions landed at Otranto.

From the middle of the 13th Century, the Ottomans, both with their fleets from the East and through their vassals in the Barbary States were the scourge of the Mediterranean. Murder, extermination, slavery and rape and pillage were national policy.

The goal was to conquer Rome itself and tear down Christianity.

The marauders would roam the Islands and coasts and look for weak points.

In Otranto the corsairs landed and the city resisted. When the city could hold out no longer, the citizens were given a choice; convert or die. The bishop was beheaded and the men were murdered. The women and children were cast into slavery and forcibly converted.

The new Pope is in a quandary. After Benedict's rather pointed comments on the nature of the Church vs Islam, it should be noted that we forgive but don't forget.

Janet-

Not going to happen. The 5th, "I don't recall", and spending time with the family are in her future. I'm probably too cynical but I'm not sure this is going to go anywhere especially with Issa on the case. His investigation with F&F got bogged down, why would this be different? Maybe this is a different kind of scandal that F&F but I'm doubtful. The Thompson Commission (investigating the lawlessness of Clinton-Gore fundraising in 1996) went no where and the Coleman Commission (investigating oil-for-food) went no where (granted those were Senate investigations though, but can't think of a House investigation that went anywhere either).

Janet

I agree, Rich.

It matters that we push though. If for nothing else...for history. Also, these scandals seem to add up over time, so maybe some future smaller scandal will be the one that explodes...but these scandals (Pigford, F&F, Benghazi,...) were the groundwork.

Marco Rubio, a "rookie"? I don't think so.

If 10 very successful years in the contentious Florida State Legislature, two of which as a dynamic Speaker Of The House only qualifies him as a rookie in your opinion, you need to read up on him, and you need to take a closer look at his record and especially his style. In fact, he is so popular in Florida that, in a 3-way race for U.S. Senator, he garnered 52% of the votes from Republicans, Democrats and Independents, alike. Don't let his laid back good ol' southern boy style fool you.

Gus

Ok Mike.

Gus

A really good post at Sultan Knish - The Muslims the Media Doesn't See

"Nadine talks about being beaten in the name of Islam, forced to memorize Koran verses and being taught to hate America. Most journalists on this side of the ocean want quotes on what nice boys the two Tsarnaevs were and how, in true liberal fashion, no one could have expected them to do something like this."

Maybe Nadine needed to take a hard look at "the roots" of why Tamerlan beat her. If she would just wear the damn hijab he might have been happy.

Death cometh soon or late.

And how can man die better
than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his Gods." ~ Horatius, Lays of Ancient Rome by Thomas Babington Macaulay

Richard ends with a quote from The Great Gatsby - "It was all very careless and confused. They were careless people … they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made."

Janet. You must hate black people, children, poor, autistic, gays, women or chipmunks.
You are part of a WAR on WOMEN, children, School teachers, black folks, or Islam.
Janet, you must be a TEA BAGGER, and you must support SEQESTER CUTS that kill gerbils, airline flights, and White House tours. You must hate 15 year old WOMEN who need HEALTH SERVICES (morning after pills) and must support people who cling bitterly to their GUNS and RELIGION.
Think about the OBAMA CRAP!! His entire existence has become DIVIDING and SLANDERING.

"Susan Rice was the idiot who willingly lied." Gus @ 1:55

Are you saying that Obama, Biden, Clinton, Panetta and Napolidumbo haven't lied about this ugly affair? In collusion with their slimy shills in the MSM, everybody in this slimy current administration is in it up to their necks.

Holly

Obama and Clinton should be charged
with Murder By Depraved Indifference.

No, Rice was the front person on the scam, this is what we face in Syria, just like Tamerlan's famous bantam imam, who died last year with the rebels;

Jane

I see my posts are not posting.

One more try:

DOT started this off above: Michael Walsh makes my heart sing as he predicts Obama is going down as a result of Benghazi.

Another taste: And hell is what is coming, one way or the other, because this time — unlike the Clinton impeachment — the big dogs are in play, in the form of hordes of very pissed-off special ops agents, patriotic spooks, forcibly retired generals and clandestine operatives who know where the bodies are buried. If the Obama administration turned its back on Chris Stevens and the three other brave Americans who died that day for crass political purposes — and, worse, if it let them die as collateral damage in its own gunrunning operation to Syria — the men and women who stand watch for this country all through the night are going to come out of the shadows, quickly.

Jane, people who take their oaths seriously will be a sharp contrast to those in power who do not. The MSM will crash and burn along with the administration.

I'll believe it when I see it.

From your lips Henry.

I really want to think positively Rich - because I think that is the karma we need.

"fortune varies but men go on regardless. When their approach suits the times they're successful, and when it doesn't their not."

I'm not unconvinced that the Obama Administration's approach of obfuscating and prevaricating is the wrong strategy. The only people that'll get pitched under the bus (or scalps of administration officials): Hillary, Panetta, and Rice-2 are out of the administration and Rice is a low enough ranking crony she is easily enough disposed of.

Well there was some actual journalism going on,

She had never smoked at all except for 2nd hand smoke.

Okay. Read what I said - we would *all* know such a person. In theory, we would all know multiple such people, since heavy smoking of filterless cigarettes was so prevalent for so long with so little restrictions in public spaces. But that isn't the case.

I also didn't say secondhand smoke wasn't dangerous at all. I said "if it were as dangerous as people say it is."

Lastly, yes, people who don't smoke get lung cancer. They also get all kinds of other cancers. Just as all smokers do not get lung cancer, we also don't know that every case of lung cancer in a nonsmoker is due to secondhand smoke.

Fiction, often is more willing to tell the tale, we've seen this with Silva and Brad Thor, this novel by Robert Wilson, ostensibly a typical cr tale of a kidnap and rescure that shows the connections between business, intelligence and terrorism, that thriees between the UK and it's former periphery, even has an uunintentional warning against electric cars
