Commander in Chief of the United States Armed Forces.

Rob Crawford

Never been military, so take this for what it's worth: A salute represents the two directions of respect and obligation -- the lower-ranks to obey the orders of the higher ranks, the higher ranks to not abuse or waste the lives of the lower ranks.

In that light, Obama shouldn't return salutes, since he's thrown lives away for the "sin" of being inconvenient to his ambition.

TexasIsHeaven

Finally - my chance to be first and say Good Morning to everybody!

If I were a Marine I would not give a fat rat's ass if that jug-earred, know nothing cretin saluted me or not.

I must say I am absolutely thrilled with the turn of events here as of late. Never let a good crisis go to waste - or so I have been told.

As the Good Book says - "Be sure, your sins will find you out."

I love old sayings. The chickens have come home to roost. His goose is cooked. If Barry is smart he will stay out on the golf course for the next three years and Mooshell will extend her vacation for an extended period of time.

Rob Crawford
maybe we are seeing an attempt by Obama to de-militarize the Presidency

Sure, while he militarizes the IRS and the DHS. Against the citizens.

TexasIsHeaven

well, I was almost first - getting closer.

Seriously this Garry Wills;

http://www.nybooks.com/blogs/nyrblog/2012/jun/18/curse-political-purity/

Meanwhile, there are actually chants to Obama in elementary schools.

NK

It's rather simple -- (although a good and decent man such as TomM can't see it)-- Reagan admired and respected the military, so he showed that admiration and respect with a salute. same with GHWB and GWB-- SlickWillie/HillaryMacBeth/Obama loathe and detest the military-- and for Obama the military is a threat to his power plans, so they have to be marginalized like Chavez did in Ven. and Erdogen in Turkey. There is and will be a lot more hostility towards the military shown by Obama than than 'salutes'-- we've already seen firing senior officers, gays, leaked stories about 'rape'-- Obama is looking to shut down the military as a social institution for obvious political/fascistic reasons.

dbp

What I remember from my Marine Corps days is that a member of the military may not salute unless in uniform.

Civilians can do whatever they please.

One benefit of returning the salute is that once the salute is returned, the original salute can be ended. So if the president does not salute, the Marine must hold the salute until he has passed-by.

Whether he gets it right or wrong, like a stopped clock, the motivation is always narcissism, as TK's pic above exemplifies.

Considering his parents, no surprise. This is funny and NSFW from People's Cube.

It should be clear now, that wherever he was born, he's not a real American.

Anyone in the military should just be satisfied he doesn't get the one finger salute in return when this commander in chief walks by.

The NYT has an odd headline over at Memorandum;
"The End of the Perpetual War"

What is it about these morons that they think if they decide to beat their swords into timeshares in Aruba that the war is then over?
Was WWII over when Hitler bombed Pearl Harbor? According to these fools it would have been had we just not fought back.

This war with Islam was actively fought for a thousand years in its first iteration and only went on a low simmer with the defeat of the Ottoman's at Vienna which completed the inoculation of Europe from Islam, which began with the virus's expulsion from Iberia.

With the West now hesitant and in decline and Islam feeling its oily oats it was inevitable the war would heat up again and will remain hot even if it means the Caliphate has to shoot the asses off of a bunch of New York, DC and European ostriches with their heads buried in the sands of Saladin.

Surrender is the end of perpetual war...

Jeff Dobbs

Quin Hillyer for Congress. Good on him, and good luck!

jimmyk

Yeah, as I said on the other thread, contrary to the JEFs assertions about what "history advises," the only way wars end are with decisive victories or explicit truce agreements (the latter frequently not being so effective). I can't think of any examples where one side said, "War's over!" and magically all went well thereafter.

Oh for Pete's sake, there are print and bound WH protocol booklets, and protocol officers.

Obama just did not out of laziness, narcissism and an unconscious contempt for the Marines.
Clinton did the same thing.

Other Presidents had some sort of basic understanding of the nation and the respect due to institutions to at least salute servicemen properly. Goodness, what an absolute tiny amount of thought this takes. you can bet that he is more than respectful to the average "worker" in any liberal NGO, and would not think about showing them disrespect.

You can bet that the USMC "notices". It is not the point whether or not Obama has the respect, it is whether or not the POTUS as a prime symbolic representative of the Nation does.

We are in deep, deep trouble. Our leaders detest everything about this nation. They have contempt for it and are gleefully going about destroying it.

Think not? Spend a semester on any major college campus and try to speak your mind.

We are running headlong into ruin.

narciso

centralcal

Jane - I just updated to Firefox 21 and still have the text formatting toolbar.

You can go to Add-Ons and search for it to reinstall it, I think.

The Infamous Ignatz

I'm curious why it has not been standard for the president to return salutes.
While he is a civilian, unlike every other civilian he is, as TK points out, the commander of the armed forces.

The proffered salute is a recognition by one of lesser rank that one of greater rank is present. The return is an acknowledgment of that offer of obeisance and duty.
Can't think of any good reason why it shouldn't be returned. Can anyone?

Jane -

I have a new computer so it's a completely new application. I searched on it, downloaded it and it said it was "incompatible". I'm such an idiot about this stuff.

Let's get over the fact that Military personnel are "something special"...they're not-they're chumps. Oh sure there's a certain political correctness in thanking them for serving their country (unless they raped, murdered etc.) but really, they're just cannon fodder to advance the national interest and the only reason they chose to be cannon fodder is because they weren't smart enough to go to college......CHUMPS!!!!

In that light, the President of the United states can ask one to hold his umbrella in the rain if so wishes because he's the most powerful man in the world. That may suck for some, but he is and if you're a chump then that's your job. And if the President doesn't want to salute a chump then he doesn't have to because he is the most powerful man in the world.

The Skagit River bridge collapse is something of a miracle, in that no one died. As with the I-35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis, the problem was a design flaw. The overhead clearance posted was only in the very center of an arched overhead beam system, and I'm amazed that a tall load didn't snag a beam on one side or the other long ago. Both of those bridges were familiar to me. I crossed each of them many times. I used to fish upstream of the Skagit bridge, and hunt ducks in the Skagit delta downstream.

I was taught that in the Navy and Marine Corps you did not salute unless you were in uniform AND were wearing a cap or hat. Unless both those conditions were met you acknowledged the salut eof another with a polite, perceptible nod. Unlike the Army, we did not salute while uncovered. The latter protocol may have changed; I don't know.

Dave (in MA)

It remains a Known Fact™ by the left that the Minneapolis bridge collapse happened because of Bush-era "cuts" in infrastructure spending, despite the fact that it's been shown that it was mainly due to a design flaw (in a bridge built as part of a large federal project during Johnson), with a contributing factor being the fact that the bridge was--courtesy of infrastructure spending--under repair at the time of the collapse and was burdened with an extraordinary load of construction vehicles and equipment.

I can't figure out why the first Brit Policemen arriving at the murder scene in London without weapons, didn't just use the unarmed women, who were talking to the murdering Jihadists, as Human Shields. Sure the Bobbies didn't have any weapons on themselves, but by hiding behind the women, surely they could have gone up to the body and removed it from the middle of the street instead of waiting 20 extra minutes for super special police with weapons to show up.

Obviously I'm being sarcastic, but just listening to Dennis Miller laying out the facts of this is insanity.

That particularly lawsuit will be incredibly powerful. I've seen the plaintiff on TV several times. She is attractive, well spoken, not the least bit hysterical, successful in a family business, and she will say she started "True the vote" so her young kids could see democracy at work. Good luck demonizing her. Hell she's not even in the Tea Party and was attacked not only by the IRS, but also the ATF, OSHA and the FBI. Her only goal was to prevent voter fraud.

Mostly gynmnastics. A little baseball. And they are pretty damn good too.

This week they had 5 eggs turn into chickens in their living room. (The hatchery was a b-day present) The youngest is into bugs and animals and is the type of kid that 5 geckos come over to and beg to be petted while running away from everyone else.

My grandfather had an egg farm, but I never knew as much about chickens as I learned this week from an 8 year old. They are named: peepers, chipmunk, penquin, Fred and something I forget.
