Gleen Greenwald gets a monster scoop that once upon a time would have gone to the Times:
NSA collecting phone records of millions of Verizon customers daily
Exclusive: Top secret court order requiring Verizon to hand over all call data shows scale of domestic surveillance under Obama
Hot Air has the "obligatory" video of Obama denouncing such broad sweeps back when it was politically expedicent for our Civil Libereties President to do so.
And Orin Kerr notes that this is "potentially a huge story" but offers a yellow flag:
2) One caveat is that The Guardian has the FISC order [link] but was unable to get anyone to say anything about its context. I don’t think we yet know if this 3-page order is what it appears to be, or if there is some other document that may reveal limitations not clear from the 3-page order. Note that the order is titled “Secondary Order,” which presumably means that there is a primary one that it follows; we don’t know what that order said. So while this is potentially a huge story, we don’t yet have substantial certainty that the facts are what they have been reported to be.
I think "huge" will understate it.
Drudge having a gay old time with the pic he posted of our Pres on a cell phone.

Pretty soon this will be like the old USSR where more people were listening in and spying on their fellow citizens than were doing any productive work. How did that work out?
Posted by: Clarice | June 06, 2013 at 10:23 AM
It's not restricted to Verizon.
On the other hand, it's apparently restricted to the origin/destination information, not the content of the calls. That's equivalent to reading the address on an envelope, and as I understand it courts have held it's not "eavesdropping".
And on the gripping hand, I have no doubt this administration wants to use this to fight its "real" enemies -- domestic political opponents.
Posted by: Rob Crawford | June 06, 2013 at 10:24 AM
I can understand this, unfortunately. If the words "pressure cooker bomb were used in English or Chechen or Arabic" in a conversation, it would be channeled into a queue for an NSA analyst to analyze.
Some of that was allowed under the Patriot Act as I recall. How this has morphed is the question.
The other part of the problem is the revelation of means and methods. What happens at NSA is supposed to stay at NSA until it becomes actionable intelligence.
But with the pattern of criminality and complete mistrust of this administration it becomes a major scandal.
These are stupid, foolish and arrogant people.

Not much surprise here. If the goal is to track incoming communications from foreign intelligence (or terrorist) sources, and to highlight the related domestic cells, this information is required. And a second order would be required to glean any information from the calls themselves, as this one does not allow any monitoring of content.
Still, the problem is that we're trusting them with data on all domestic phone calls. And that trust is strained when applied to a guy who, when he says, "punish our enemies," is referring to conservatives, not islamists.

Since his election, President Barack Obama has taken an expansive view of legal authorities in the name of national security, asserting that he can order the deaths of U.S. citizens abroad who are suspected of terrorism without involvement by courts, investigate reporters as criminals and — in this case — read and copy the contents of computers carried by U.S. travelers without a good reason to suspect wrongdoing.

Expert who assisted law firm which DEFENDED Obama's birth credentials now says Birth Certificate is a FRAUD!
That is a false statement. The man says not a single word about Obama's birth certificate. His remarks are directed exclusively at the pdf disseminated on April 27. 2011.
He says not a word about the hard-copy certified, sealed copy of the certificate that was publicly displayed and photographed on that same day. The photograph is here.
What has never been addressed by any of these loons is why, if one had in hand that nice, clean high-resolution document shown in the photograph, why would one go through the elaborate technical gymnastics necessary to "forge" a pdf showing the exact same information? (One wouldn't. One would disseminate a pdf of the document shown in the photograph. This simple question will never be addressed by the loons.)

FURTHER DEBUNK
Note the willfully deceitful use of language. The phrase "now says" subtly suggests that Mr. Hayes formerly defended the authenticity of the pdf, but has changed his mind. Untrue.
The wording might also be construed as suggesting that Mr. Hayes had done work for Perkins Coie on this very matter. Again untrue. In fact, all we know is that at some point someone at Perkins Coie retained Mr. Hayes for some purpose. Since his primary expertise is in handwriting analysis, that seems likely. There is no indication that he ever gave any testimony of the firm's behalf.
Always keep your eye closely on the ball when dealing with these snake-oil salesmen. It's a game of three-card monte, irresistible to the yokels.

I'm not so sure about a certain portion of the military.
Remember the military couldn't response to Benghazi because it would take them to long to get there according to many of the reports;
" Fifty-six minutes after his call to the Pentagon, the image of the crusader, with its odious melding of the crusader flag with the American flag, had been removed from the dining hall,” it said."
http://cnsnews.com/news/article/church-state-separation-group-takes-credit-air-forces-removal-picture
------------------------------------------------------------
http://weaselzippers.us/2013/06/05/army-punishes-soldier-for-serving-chick-fil-a/
"Crews said the soldier decided to hold a party to celebrate his new position. The invitations read, “In honor of my promotion and in honor of the Defense of Marriage Act, I’m serving Chick-fil-A sandwiches at my promotion party.”
After the party, the solider received a letter of reprimand. Crews said at issue was the combination of the sandwiches and the soldier’s support of DOMA (which happens to be the law of the land).
“There was initially some talk of bringing judicial punishment against him,” Crews said. “He had a letter put in his file and an investigation was initiated to see if he had violated any policy.”
The solider reached out to the Chaplain Alliance for help and they put him in touch with an attorney. Crews said nearly one year later – the soldier is still embroiled in a legal battle."
The above is but one example cited in the article detailing the attacks on Christian solders.
Remember the highest ranks of the military wanted there to be no "loss of diversity" when an American Maj was killing America soldiers at Ft Hood. Now we have the insanity of that same Major being allowed to cross example the soldiers who didn't die.
I believe there are hundreds of examples of the Obama regime attacking each of the groups you mentioned.
IMO,It looks more and more like Squaredance was being overly optimistic in his posts.

Why don't you debunk the work of the actual expert instead of asking questions of motivations?
Because to do so would be to dignify the suggestion that this is a legitimate question that can be resolved by deciding between the claims of two competing teams of experts. That is the goal of the hucksters, who would love to create the impression that there is doubt about the authenticity of the certificate. There isn't. In any event, there are highly qualified experts who have indeed opined that the pdf contains no evidence of tampering or forgery. I will not load this site up with their technical analyses.
The question of motive here is unrelated to any such question in the case of a mass murderer. We know that such people act upon insane motives, or no motive at all. Here, the plain facts show that there was absolutely no reason whatsoever to create a forged pdf; the loons assert that nevertheless someone in the White House did so. They won't say why, because the question itself discloses how stupid their entire theory is.
This is kindergarten-level stuff. Only the yokels are deceived.

"Most of Planned Parenthood´s 750 health and abortion clinics around the nation will be covered under Obamacare, imposing a new demand on insurers who want to participate in the health care exchanges that will provide insurance coverage to millions of Americans. While insurers currently cover doctors and health facilities in their networks, Obamacare demands that they also cover at least 20 percent of "essential community providers" in their coverage area, including Planned Parenthood, AIDS clinics, pain management centers and even alternative medicine providers. A new bit of info on Stephanie Cutter's "There was nothing nefarious going on,” comment regarding head IRS guys being at the White House so often with her sometimes in attendance. From a study sited in a Washington Examiner story:
Curiously, WatchdogLabs.org also determined that between them, (IRS Head) Shulman and (IRS Witch) Ingram attended more than 300 White House meetings but never once attended the same meeting. A reasonable person could conclude from these facts that Obamacare wasn't the sole subject on the White House agendas of these two senior IRS executives.

Jean Claude Tremblay told WND that none of his comments would permit the conclusion that the Obama birth certificate is an authentic document.
This is an example of the willful deceit that is emblematic of the birther lunacy. TK knows very well that there is a vast difference between being able to say that a document is not a forgery--which is what Tremblay said--and saying that it is authentic. In order to say the latter, he would have to be familiar with the format of Hawaii birth documents, the Hawaii state seal, the signature of Mr. Anoki, etc. Obviously he cannot do that, nor was he asked to. He was asked if the document had been forged, and he said that it had not.
The birther deceit in this instance goes as follows: "The document is a forgery." The proof: "No it isn't." Response:"Well. OK, but you can't say it's authentic."
It's not a forgery. For now, that's the only issue presented by the Arapio nutballs.

I'm glad I don't live in New York State anymore...
The New York State Senate today passed a bill that creates the crime of aggravated harassment of a police or peace officer. The bill (S.2402), sponsored by Senator Joe Griffo (R-C-I, Rome) would make it a felony to harass, annoy, or threaten a police officer while on duty.
“Our system of laws is established to protect the foundations of our society,” Senator Griffo said. “Police officers who risk their lives every day in our cities and on our highways deserve every possible protection, and those who treat them with disrespect, harass them and create situations that can lead to injuries deserve to pay a price for their actions.”
The bill establishes this crime as a Class E Felony, punishable by up to four years in prison.
“At a time when shocking incidents of disrespect and outright confrontation are at an all-time high, the men and women who patrol the streets of our cities deserve every possible protection we can offer them,” Senator Griffo stated. “My bill would make it a crime to take any type of physical action to try to intimidate a police officer. This is a necessary action because we can see from the rise in incidents that too many people in our society have lost the respect they need to have for a police officer. We need to make it very clear that when a police officer is performing his duty, every citizen needs to comply and that refusal to comply carries a penalty.”
http://www.nysenate.gov/press-release/senate-passes-bill-making-harassment-police-officer-crime
Note that last paragraph. The respect people "need to have for a police officer" and "every citizen needs to comply."
What about police (not to mention elected officials!) needing to EARN the respect of the citizens who pay them and equip them? And what about police (and elected officials!) respecting the citizenry?
The mere fact of speaking those words ought to disqualify an elected official from office. It's appalling beyond words.

Spelling correction: should be Chiesa not Ciesa

I love DoT and TK both.
But I swear if they don't stop on that we are going to have to rewrite Narciscolator to screen out any of their posts on this one subject!

You know how police can get the respect of the citizens? Well, it doesn't start with turning "dissing" them into a felony.
(I'd suggest they start by arresting corrupt politicians, but then when would the police have time to write tickets?)

DEBUNK JUNK
Tremblay did not say what you say he said.
Look pal, you presented the meerkat guy as an expert. Asking who the hell he is is a fair question.
You imagined that I mocked the only name he goes by.
Apparently you didn't read the classmate story.
Afterbirtherism at its finest.

Writing tickets is the path to sound pensions.
Tax collectors, they've become.

OL, as I have said, I'll never be the first to raise a birther issue on any thread. But the stuff is so vile and counterproductive that, whenever it is raised, I'll respond.

OL. I'm blushing!

There is a new thread. Perhaps TK and DoT can keep the norther dialogue on this thread and the new one can be a "birther" free zone. They have so many comments on the subject, that in scrolling past comments on other subjects are getting lost. I don't know what others think, but I am finding it frustrating.

BIRTHER
This ought to serve as a warning shot across the bow to the naysayers of our criminal investigation in the Obama fraud case. The impressive credentials of Mr. Hayes, and the fact that he has testified in court cases for Perkins-Coie coupled with the fact that Mr. Hayes is a registered Democrat, demonstrates the integrity of our investigation and our conviction that we possess incontrovertible evidence to back our case. It must be emphasized that we possess much more evidence similar to this revelation that we have not yet released for public information

Not so fast to disqualify all of this blogs readers from the ability to distinguish a pdf forgery!
When I first examined the PDF inside of Adobe Illustrator, I was indeed very puzzled at what I found. The various layers; the strange half-conversion of some images into text, etc. However, I was soon able to convince myself that it was legit, and I'll explain why.
I printed the original PDF on a high resolution color printer in my office, and then re-scanned it through an HP high-speed multi-page scanner. (The kind that cost $2,000+ and are commonly used by the government.) I had the scanning software automatically save the file as PDF with the OCR function enabled. Then I re-examined it in Illustrator. I found that very similar (but not identical) artifacts had been introduced to the new PDF!
It quickly became obvious to me that some stupid government secretary was responsible for the whole fiasco. The image should never have been scanned to PDF to begin with; it should have been released as PNG or TIFF. But if you were going to scan it to PDF, then you should at least make sure to turn off the OCR function.
Etc.

DEBUNK
Those who insist on the optimization argument either do not understand what attributes need to be present for this argument to hold water -- or they are hoping the general public does not understand. It's probably a little of both. The defenders certainly count on the ignorance of the average citizen when it comes to understanding the differences in layers produced from an automated process (such as optimization) compared to a manual choice to manipulate the file. One goal of the report is to offer a deeper understanding for recognizing the two patterns of layering (and to avoid being deceived or bamboozled). The report adds additional proof along the way that the optimization excuse fails miserably and can be completely ruled out as a justification for layers.

Thanks, iqvoice. Many others have replicated the same experiment.
Until the birthers explain why it was necessary to forge a pdf when a perfectly clean and clear copy of the certificate was at hand, they are left holding their own pathetically silly bag.
They won't explain it because they can't. These are dishonest people, with gullible zealots in their thrall.

DEBUNK
Motive does not need to be proved.
Posted by: Threadkiller | June 06, 2013 at 03:59 PM
OL - I love DoT and TK both, too.
But some people love TK more when he isn't going on
ad nauseam about his BC and NBC theories.
That's why an accommodation was suggested whereby they alert us to a birther post by using a BIRTHER or DEBUNK header at the top of those posts. Enables those who are not interested to skip over them.
So far, it seems to *mostly* be working.

NEW YORK TIMES EDITORIAL:
The [Obama] administration has now lost all credibility.
Posted by: centralcal | June 06, 2013 at 04:22 PM
Birds of a feather.
“Drone strikes. Wiretaps. Gitmo. Renditions. Military commissions. Obama is carrying out Bush’s fourth term, yet he attacked Bush for violating the Constitution,” said Ari Fleischer, George W. Bush’s press secretary.
“He’s helping keep the nation safe, vindicating President Bush, all while putting a bipartisan stamp on how to fight terror,” Fleischer added.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) defended the record-grab Thursday, publicly urging Attorney General Eric Holder to stay the course even if some corrections needed to be made.
“You keep up what you’re doing,” Graham said. “President Bush started it. President Obama’s continuing it. We need it, from my point of view.”
