Try as they might the NY Times knows which side they are rooting for in the Zimmerman trial. Here is a sadly typical bit of reporting:
At Zimmerman Trial, a Tale of Pursuit and Attack
SANFORD, Fla. — One of the prosecution’s star witnesses, the young woman who spoke on the phone with Trayvon Martin moments before he was killed, told the jury in the George Zimmerman trial on Wednesday that Mr. Martin was being followed and tried to get away from the man pursuing him.
As spectators and jurors looked on rapt, the witness, Rachel Jeantel, 19, a high school senior from Miami and a friend of Mr. Martin’s, told her story quietly, sometimes haltingly, sometimes with irritation, at times dabbing her eyes with a tissue. Asked by a prosecutor to talk about her final conversation with Mr. Martin, Ms. Jeantel drove home the state’s contention: as Mr. Martin was trying to avoid Mr. Zimmerman, he was accosted and wound up dead.
"He was accosted"? Wait a second - I thought Martin initated the verbal exchange. Wouldn't that be Martin "accosting" Zimmerman?
Ms. Alvarez, ignoring her own lead, confirms that:
“He say, ‘Why are you following me for?’ ” Ms. Jeantel recounted, quoting Mr. Martin. “I heard him, a hard-breathing man, saying, ‘What you doing around here?’ ”
Is that really unclear?
Next, a bit of what may be unexplained urban slang:
Then she said she heard a bump — the headset — and “the sound of wet grass.” “I calling, ‘Trayvon, Trayvon,’ ” Ms. Jeantel said. “I kind of heard Trayvon saying, ‘Get off, get off.’ Suddenly the phone hung up, shut off.”
Boring middle-aged white guys like me (or the defense attorneys) might think "Get off" meant that Zimmerman was on top of Martin. Keep up, and celebrate diversity! From the dictionary of Street Gang Slang:
Get off the gate - Get it on: to start fighting
Who knew? More to the point, did Martin or Ms. Jeantel employ this sort of slang? Maybe the defense could lighten her mood by giving her a chance to talk about a subject she can address with authority. Of course, that is tricky (asking an unfriendly witness questions to which the answer is not known is hardly viewed as Best Practice) but I do wonder how the defense might constructively explore this possibility.
Jeralyn Merritt has lots of detail on how attorney Benjamin Crump prepped Ms. Jeantel and then misled the court about it. Her thoughts on yesterday's performance is here. A snippet:
She's now impeached on several areas, especially GZ's response to TM after TM confronted GZ and asked him, "What are you following me for?" I'm so glad West brought this out, see my post here. Her first answer to Crump was that GZ responded with "What are you talking about" not "What are you doing around here." (Audio clip here.)Crump, immediately realizing that this was different than what she had told Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, stopped her and told her she had said something different to the Martins, and asked her to start over. She began again, and told it the Crump and Martin way.
Apparently there is a similar trial happening somewhere that MSNBC is covering, however, the witness there is credible.
I just caught a few minutes of the lawyer commentary during a break and couldn't believe their take on this.

OL-I think DD is Exhibit A that the idea of moving away from print literacy to make using technology and relying on visuals "just as good" is going to work as poorly as I have been screaming.
Most of the FL ed schools I have looked at expressly require reading be taught via whole words or syllables.
I was off writing and am stepping up the descriptions of the intl efforts these ed reforms are a part of. http://www.invisibleserfscollar.com/descending-to-a-connected-kleptocracy-via-the-digital-learning-and-climate-change-ruses/
With specimens like DD to show for OBE style state and urban ed reforms, it really will be the eclipse of the UK and US Michael Barber's report predicted.
By the way, talk about being on a foreign server. That report was the only thing in English or using our alphabet at all.
Posted by: rse | June 27, 2013 at 11:47 AM
Tape played, she either said "I couldn't hear Trayvon," or "I coulda hear Trayvon." The syntax would suggest the first, but given this witness, I wouldn't rely on that. Interesting that the interchange begins with her saying she could only hear a little, but after some leading by BDLR, she could hear it clear.

Helen,
I don't know if it is "normal" but if a Judge thought a lawyer was playing for time, or asking for a ruling on an issue she had already ruled on, she might do it. I wasn't watching, but I'm not shocked by it.

rse, In my experience, long before the modern excresences, public education in Fla has been awful. The state has no income tax; it spends a great deal on the elderly and there's little money left for education even assuming they knew how to educate.

She was coached last night. We just don't know who did it. Maybe someone on the phone with Crump.
I found this at Talk Left. As you read it, ask yourself if this is the sort of thing that would be done by someone planning on killing an innocent boy.
here is the transcript from shortly before Sean says we don't need you to do that.
1:54:26 - Okay, it's on the left-hand side from the clubhouse?
1:57:62 - No, you go in straight through the entrance and then you make a left. Uh, yeah, you go straight in, don't turn and make a left - [2:06:89] sh*t, he's running. [in real time this is at 7:11:41 PM].
2:08:82 - He's running? Which way is he running? [truck door opens, door open chime/alarm]
2:10:24 - Uh [grunts while exiting truck] down towards the other entrance of the neighborhood [door closes].
2:14:33 - Okay and which entrance is that he's heading towards?
2:17:17 - The back entrance [splashes through puddled water in gutter/wind noise]. F*cking punks! [or 'pud'ls'].
2:22:79 - Are you following him?
2:24:98 - Yeah.
2:25:20 - Okay, we don't need you to do that.
2:27:75 - Okay. [wind noise continues / there is no heavy breathing / he is walking, not running]. [faint
(distant?) tap at 2:33:01].
2:33:88 - All right, sir, and what is your name?
2:36:22 - George - he ran.
2:39:93 - All right, George, what's your last name?
2:41:98 - [two sharp metallic taps] Zimmerman. [wind noise disappears for remainder of call]
2:44:10 - And George, what's the phone number you're calling from?
2:45:92 - [three quick taps] Four-oh-seven, four-three-five, two-four-zero-zero [one tap].
2:52:63 - Okay, George, we do have em on the way. Do you want to meet with the officer when they get out there?
2:56:43 - Yeah.
2:57:16 - All right, where are you going to meet with them at?
2:59:35 - [one tap] Um, if they come in through the, uh, gate [four light taps] tell them to go straight past the clubhouse [four loud taps] and, uh, [sign or post being jostled by breeze] straight past the clubhouse and make a left. And then they go past the mailboxes, n' they'll see my truck.
3:18:39 - [crosstalk: unintelligible] Okay, what-what address are you parked in front of?
3:21:60 - [mild tap] Um, I don't know. It's a cut-through so I don't know the address.
3:26:13 - Okay, do you live in the area?
3:28:31 - Yeah, yeah, [cross talk: I've lived here--]
3:29:34 - What's your apartment number?
3:31:53 - It's a home. It's one-nine-five-zero, [two taps] aw crap, I don't want to give it all out, I don't know where this kid is.
3:38:75 - Okay, do you want to just meet with them right by the mailboxes then?
3:42:62 - Yeah, that's fine [tap or?]
3:45:61 - All right, George, I'll let them know to meet you when they're out there.
3:47:36 - Actually could you have him - could you have him call me and I'll tell him where I'm at?
3:50:93 - Okay, yeah, that's no problem.
3:53:48 - You need my number or you got it?
3:54:73 - Yeah, I - I got it. It's four-oh-seven, four-three-five, two-four-zero-zero?
3:58:74 - Yeah, you got it.
3:59:47 - Okay, no problem. I'll let them know to call you when they're in the area.
4:02:76 - Thanks.
4:03:12 - You're welcome.

MSNBC experts are saying the all-woman jury will understand the "cultural differences" between Dee Dee and the defense council and take that into consideration.
"Just because she lied outside the coutroom doesn't mean she's lying inside the courtroom".
Apparently, they believe Dee Dee is winning over the jury with her charm and wit.

I'm thinking West may not want to go too far with the conflict between DD's testimony and the deposition transcript. She is saying that the transcript has it wrong. There were two court reporters, one of which (the defense's) could not transcribe the answer in question. Makes it seem more credible for the witness to say the other court reporter got it wrong.
Of course, it doesn't help her that she also said she can't remember what she said.
I don't know what I said, but it wasn't that!

The Judge's version, according to the defense, has asterisks where text is missing.

Affirmative action for the truth?
I'm just starting to comprehend what MSNBC is getting at. Originally, when they mentioned the "cultural differences", I assumed they were in regards to Dee Dee not being able to read or speak english.
Now, after listening a bit more closely to their anchors and experts, I believe they are saying there is a "cultural difference" in the truth. That certain cultures don't define the truth as rigidly as others.
So, when Dee Dee makes minor changes in what her testimony is, this is to be expected and not demonized as Don West is doing. To harp on such inconsistencies would be akin to racist.

I expect they're laying groundwork for the "shocking aftermath" within the truth impaired black community following Zimmerman's acquittal. After all, they ginned up the indictment with their reporting, why shouldn't they gin up some riots when Zimmerman is acquitted?

Jury wasn't there. My mistake. Would've been good though.

I am starting to think he should have run for it.I am sick to my stomach for him.I blame the people responsible for indicting him. Fear prompted their actions and Zimmerman is paying the price for their cowardice.
I agree completely. This case is just another example (as if we need more, after 4.5 years of Zero's administration) that the rule of law in this country is, at best, a shell of its former self...if it isn't dead entirely.
The ONLY reason to obey the law at this point, or to honor any contracts or promises made to government or its employees, at any level, is fear of discovery and consequences, and even that doesn't mean much when, as in GZ's case, they can just make stuff up out of whole cloth anyway.
There is no legitimacy; our "leaders" and "Public servants" do not honor their oaths or promises or contracts with us; they don't regard us as citizens but (at best) as serfs. They are owed nothing, except fear of their power. They've forfeited any respect they might ever have deserved.

So whatever happened to reasonable doubt in those anchors' minds?
Speaking only for ABC, I think the massive amount of alcohol flushed it, along with everything else, from Diane Sawyer's mind.

-- To harp on such inconsistencies would be akin to racist.--
Persactly; in lefty la la land the racists are the ones who think black people are just as capable of recognizing an objective truth and telling it as whites.
Non racists are those who think they aren't.

Does it seem like football is becoming like Rollerball, except off the field, or put it another way, what do T-Dawg and Hernandez have in common, prior bad acts.

Great Scott. From what little I've seen, DD is a disaster for the prosecution.

(I think) Cecil -
I have long suspected that Martin indeed had been casing the area. He apparently had possession earlier of stolen jewelry, which suggests that he may have been involved in burglary in the past. Of course, we will never know, since he is dead. Nevertheless, his behavior that night does seem suspicious.

DoT,
I found Miss Tawana Mangum to be a credit to both the prosecution and her community. Only a crazy ass cracker would think otherwise.

Leftist "Truth"-- I'll repeat myself, to the Left/Dem/Media culture, there is no truth, no facts only THE NARRATIVE.
Of course, when one of the 'Community' is a defendant in court, the community member is entitled to hold THE MAN to a standard of absolute perfect factual truth. Does anyone remember the mind numbing cross of the LAPD forensic lab techs by OJ's lawyers?Dozens of minimal factual inconsistencies were question over and over again.Judge Ito just sat there and let it go on for days.

In my limited experience, no matter what they say, profoundly stupid or otherwise incoherent and irritable witnesses are either completely disregarded by judges and juries or they are actively harmful to the side they testify for.
The only way they can hurt the other side is if they're bullied or humiliated.

Careful, DoT -
We've gone down the rabbit hole and are now living in Obama World.

"Great Scott. From what little I've seen, DD is a disaster for the prosecution."
The MSNBC experts have determined that even though she was caught in a number of lies, her "core story" never changed.
They believe the jury will ignore all the inconsistencies that were exposed and retain only that Zimmerman chased Trayvon and the words "Get off, get off".

NK, the left doesn't have truth. They have IDEOLOGY.

I have a question for the legal folks here.
This morning as West continued his questioning of Dee Dee, and as he started to become a little more aggressive (for him), BDLR repeatedly objected. After a morning break of 15 minutes, when the jury was brought back in, the Judge indicated there was a question from the jury about Objections and read them what appeared to be a standard definition.
Anyway, I thought it was interesting that the juror(s) were questioning that. Is that usual or were they picking up on something?
