On the NYCity Taxi driver taking off that tourist girls leg. I don't understand.

A link to a website called the Gothamist that NK linked earlier has this story: No Charges For Cab Driver Who Cost Tourist Her Foot

The cab driver who jumped the curb in Midtown yesterday causing a crash that severely injured a pedestrian, has not been charged with any crime. Mohammed Himon was issued an administrative summons for unauthorized operation of his vehicle, which carries a possible fine [PDF] of $100 to $350.

How the hell about Reckless Driving?

From another story across the pond on the same incident (UK Mail):

Rob Crawford
“I feel really, really bad . . . It was a very bad accident,’’ Himon told the tabloid. “Actually, I can’t even remember it. It happened really quick. I was very upset. I am praying to Allah for her that she is getting better. Please pray for her and me.’’

Protected class.

Wanna bet he's illegal?

Danube of Thought

How about reckless endangerment?

Danube of Thought

New York statutes:

§ 120.25 Reckless endangerment in the first degree. A person is guilty of reckless endangerment in the first degree when, under circumstances evincing a depraved indifference to human life, he recklessly engages in conduct which creates a grave risk of death to another person. Reckless endangerment in the first degree is a class D felony.
NK

I have no idea why the NYPD didn't charge the cabbie on the spot.

From another story across the pond on the same incident (UK Mail): British fashion graduate, 23, whose foot was severed after New York City taxi crash faces having MORE of her leg amputated as it's revealed cab driver had 7 traffic violations in the last 3 years

...the cab driver, 24-year-old Faysal Kabir Mohammad Himon of Queens, New York, has been charged with seven traffic violations in the last three years...

'I am in shock,' said Himon, a Bangladeshi immigrant who has been a taxi driver for three years.
'Nothing like this has happened to me before.' His record shows he had three moving violations in 2011 for running a red light and speeding.
Himon's brother said that Himon had got into a fight with the cyclist just before the accident and that 'He went to hit the brake and stepped on the accelerator instead.'
But the cyclist, 40-year-old Kenneth Olivo, said Himon had cut him off moments before the crash and started honking, then struck him.
'I told him to stop because I’m trying to go forward and people are crossing,' the cyclist said. 'He loses his patience. He gets angry. He accelerates. Hits me.

I ask again, How the hell is that not worth a Reckless Driving charge?

Rob Crawford
The first comment is quite disturbing.

You mean the Chunk Whigger kneepad party? Is "disturbing" a strong enough word?

I think it was Taranto who first quipped that every Obama promise came with an expiration date.

To me, the takeaway isn't what UPS and others are doing (as this was all foreseen), but rather the total lack of any guilt, remorse or shame from Obamacare supporters. The law isn't turning out like they hoped/promised, yet all they do is continue to lie.

As I think it was TM who said, who we going to believe, what Obama tells us is happening or what we see with our own two eyes?

marymary

I thought that Norton call sounded familiar. It's from 2010.

Makes me wonder 1) why Cenk wasn't outraged 3 years ago and 2) why he brings it up now.

NK

The NYPD had a witness to the cabbie's wreckless driving, possibly even an intentional assault on the cyclist* and they don't cuff the guy and take him to the MTN Precinct? Astonishing to me.

* If the cyclist was one of those Citibank share a bikes, they really ARE a protected class in NYC, why didn't the NYPD protect the cyclist?

narciso

So I hear 'Norma Desmond' the fantasist, or knave has piped up, her yap.

He thinks the surgeon who amputated Sian Green's leg stands to pocket $50K.

Speaking of Delivering a Message, has the JEF said anything to the parents of the murdered Australian about how if he had three sons they'd look just like his killers.

daddy

Well 1 more maybe.

I notice that in China and Taiwan for the last few years, Taxi drivers who appear to be new to driving do that bit where they constantly stand on the accelerator, then on the brake, then the accelerator, then the brake, so that you get nauseous since they haven't learned how to be smooooth at all driving the vehicle. We joke that they are like A-7 pilots, because having only 1 engine, (and that engine slow to spool up), when coming on the boat they were always back and forth with the throttle like Chinese Taxi-drivers, in order to have it available for thrust if they get low.

Anyhow, I note that mainland Chinese Taxi drivers are getting better and better---less of the vroom/screech/vroom screech action.

Taiwan however still has plenty of sucky A-7 style Taxi drivers. I wonder if it is because they have less wide open highways to go whizzing down and learn how to be smooth---It's always bumper to bumper traffic and millions of little motor cycle scooters with the whole family perched on top, whizzing between cars? Who knows.

Anyhow, just thought 'd mention that.

Off the top I can't think of any other generally terible Taxi drivers in the system, tho' India is taking your life in your hands because you're in a tiny flimsy car and there are zero road rules and terrible potholes everywhere.

Oh, and the Korean's stink of Kimchi, but they drive fine.

The Somaoli guy in Newark who tried to kill us a few months back and got stranded on the median in the rainstorm got fired. This Bangladeshi cabbie sounds like another gross incompetent.

the best cab ride story I have is from several years ago. We were on one of the grades between Sonoma and Napa counties and late for an engagement. Anyone who knows Sonoma knows just how bad the roads are, unlike Napa.

It was late December, the light fading fast. A guy in a BMW passed us doing maybe 50 on a 2 lane narrow mountain road. I figured he knew what he was doing so I accelerated a little to keep his tail lights in view, the theory being that he knew where the potholes were.

Well, he didn't tell me about the 18" wide and 12" deep pothole I nailed with both left side tires, causing a double blowout. I pulled the car over and there we were in a little flyby and the middle of nowhere.

No cell service. So I begin walking down the road hoping no one clips me in the fog and see a man on a dirt bike on a rise behind a sign that says No trespassing - We are not a winery". I gesture towards the man and he rides up.

I explain what happened and he invites me back to the house, a very nice house. We collect Querida and all go back to the house, where we call AAA and ask for them to send a taxi.

This being way out in the middle of nowhere our hosts invite us to imbibe some wine from one of their friends vineyards up the hill, which we of course do.

I then trek back to the car and wait for the AAA truck, which duly shows up and he gets the car up on the flatbed and the taxi shows.

Well, in rural areas such as Sonoma County one just doesn't know what one might find behind the wheel of a taxi, nor know what kind of individual might be driving it.

We got a 1984 minivan that literally had duct tape holding it together with Quasimodo as the driver. Further, Quasimodo was obsessed with the Golden State Warriors and had the game on full blast.

And so we drove down the mountain at I would guess 70 or so, me expecting to be flung into the trees or a creek at any moment and Querida an especially pale shade of white.

The funny thing was that we were raptly listening to Kiki Vanderweghe doing the play by play as if it was a radio preacher and these might be out last minutes on earth. In the meantime Quas was muttering to himself something dark and scary every few minutes. "mmmfeffm gibber narlash" and who knows what.

We finally hit the flats and then he accelerated. He never looked back and all we had to hold onto was Kiki's play by play. That's about as taut a rope as it gets.

We got to the hotel and I threw money at him and we ran like hell to the bar. It could have been 20 minutes or 45. Time stood still and we measured it by the game clock, I guess. I will always remember Kiki Vanderweghe and Quasimodo.

Richard Aubrey

I believe the report said that the spouses were dropped because they were eligible for coverage elsewhere.
Frequently, that's their own employer's group coverage.
You can't have two plans, so you pick one. Now they can pick their employer's plan. That will add to the employer's expenses.
Probably UPS' plan was better than the plan available to the spouses--it's a big company and can do that--but it would necessarily be expensive. Might save $400-$600 per month per person. Buy a few tires with that.
So what happens if the spouse's employer drops his coverage altogether? Usually, group plans require coverage for spouses if not otherwise covered, so the spouses would probably be picked up again.

NK

I am getting more furious with the Okla murder. The shooters really did hunt down and murder an innocent for no reason. They did what the Racialist Grievance Committee falsely accused GZ of doing. Where are the demos in Okla? where is the racialists' outrage? Where is Holder? where is JEF? their silence damns them all.

UPS used to get tires for free so they did not care about paying for spouses insurance, even though it would have saved them money. Especially since the spouses all worked for companies that offered health care.

Then Bush destroyed the economy and made Obama inherit the new tire pricing range of $400x12x15000 to $600x12x15000.

It took implementation of Obamacare for UPS to realize what Bush had done to them.

Centralcal, I think Marlene reported that a couple of days ago. My question is where does one go to make a difference when one leaves the Republican party?

'While both Fisher [sic][25] and [Hasan Family Foundation Chairwoman Seeme] Hasan provided contradictory accounts to the press at the time this issue was raised by the Denver Post, a more thorough review of their archived materials demonstrates that both had forgotten several specific communications with McInnis that had occurred several years before,' states Gleason."[23]
