Neither Assad nor Imam Khameini take Sun Tzu Obama's comments on red lines (whether applicable to Syrian gas attacks or Iran's nuclear program) seriously. That's the price of electing to POTUS a man sublimely incapable of understanding how the international system works.

I take no comfort from Obama's lines (whether cocaine lines or red lines or otherwise). The only comfort I take in world affairs these days is the following remark attributed to Otto von Bismarck: "There is a providence that protects idiots, drunkards, children, and the United States of America.”

This is interesting:

Leader of Al-Qaeda In The Arabian Peninsula Told Zawahiri He Would Carry Out An Attack That Would “Change The Face of History”…

WMD?

(Reuters) – A vow made in a phone call by the leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) to carry out an attack that would “change the face of history” lay behind this month’s closures of many Western embassies, Yemen’s president said.

In the first public disclosure by a government leader of details of the intercepted call that prompted the U.S. alert, President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi said AQAP head Nasser al-Wuhayshi made the pledge to al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri on July 29.

Many U.S. and other Western diplomatic missions in the Middle East, Africa and Asia closed temporarily as a precaution.

Wuhayshi spoke by phone with Zawahri, who is believed to be based in Pakistan, while attending a meeting of 20 al Qaeda leaders in Yemen’s Maarib province, Hadi said.

“When I was in Washington, the Americans told us that they had intercepted a call between Ayman al-Zawahri and Wuhayshi, in which Wuhayshi told Zawahri that they would carry out an attack that would change the face of history,” the president told police cadets in remarks which state television aired on Friday.

Good. I don't suppose WA has the death penalty, but maybe that is too kind a punishment.

I was wondering why the death penalty isn't in play for the Oklahoma killers. I can't think of a more deserving bunch.

Also, while we're on the general subject, that taxi driver who cost the British tourist her leg may well be charged criminally, contrary to early reports. He wasn't charged immediately because they are investigating--interviewing witnesses, looking for security footage, etc.

Press secretary Josh Earnest was asked by Fox News’ correspondent, Ed Henry, if President Barack Obama has a “red line” beyond which he would act against Muslim attacks on Egyptian Christians.

“Well, I didn’t bring my red pen out with me today,” Earnest joked.

Could someone chalk out the equation which would have caused Assad to use chemical weapons in a Damascus suburb? Be sure to demonstrate why armor, artillery, air power and infantry would be insufficient to achieve the results obtained at Grozny.

NK

JimmyK-- the indespensible NYPost also reported that the 40yo bike messenger the cabbie hit is a piece of work, 10 arrests including an assault in April this year. So what those 2 idiots did before the cab slammed into the poor girl may be a bit confused and will have to be sorted out.

Captain Hate on an iPhone

Yes, NK; it appears he's guided by his first name to the exclusion of his last.

If it does, that even mean 'jihad' means something beyond 'peaceful inner journey'.

So what those 2 idiots did before the cab slammed into the poor girl may be a bit confused and will have to be sorted out.

My guess is they got into a bit of road rage (bicyclists are second only to people pushing babies in strollers in their sense of entitlement), and that ended up with the cabbie losing his cool. But the cabbie has a record of accidents and other infractions.

Ignatz

Could someone chalk out the equation which would have caused Assad to use chemical weapons in a Damascus suburb?

What makes you think Assad made the decision?

Before 2001, US policy was that a WMD was a WMD was a WMD -- a chemical or biological attack was no different than a nuclear attack, and would be met in kind.

Then the feds let the jihadis get away with the anthrax attack, playing the ridiculous "disgruntled US scientist" card while ignoring all the evidence to the contrary.

Now the JEF declared a "red line" and a year later has it thrown in his face.

The JEF's determination to do nothing "upsetting" to his beloved Muslim Brotherhood will end with a US city being attacked by nerve gas or a bio weapon. The "go for it; we're toothless!" signal couldn't be clearer if the JEF stood in front of the White House, dropped trou', spread cheeks, and started screaming "OPEN FOR BUSINESS!!!"

matt

Do they pick WH press jackholes by their names these days? Jay Carney? Josh Earnest? What next? Billy Liar?

Nerve gas is a funny weapon but the Arabs seem to be pretty good at it these days. Saddam and his WW I re-enactments on the Iranian front and against the Kurds.

The UN said they would send envoys. What they need is a NEST team.I have to believe the military has these ready to go in an instant. The conclusions would be incontrovertible. Except that The Euros and Obama really don't want to go down that path. There be dragons.

In Lebanon, it looks like Hezbollah carried out their promise to retaliate against the Beirut bombers by blowing up 2 mosques and killing even more civilians.

Wuhayshi scares the dickens out of the West's intelligence services with a phone call.

Our UN Ambassador is not reporting for duty just yet in the middle of a crisis.

I don't want to say "how could it get more f'ed up?" because I know how it can.

POTUS tells CNN that some in GOP tell him privately they agree with him but are fearful of Tea Party & Rush Limbaugh if they declare it.

Very late and just a quick one. Caught a bit of this on Rush this morning.

My question: After Obama said that he had Repub's coming up and saying that they secretly agree with him but can't do anything due to election pressure, did the questioner then use that to bring up "Tell Vlad that I'll be more flexible after the election."

Well of course not, but why not? That would have been the perfect moment to ask if it was exactly similar Mr President, and BTW what exactly did you mean by being more flexible when you said it, and can you tell us how you have followed through on your "More Flexible promise to Putin" as perhaps it might give us insight into what you are saying about these unnamed Republicans.

Library run!!! Later.

James D, I'll see if Dream Student has hit Alaska yet. Tomorrow night we've got Bill Maher and Bill Cosby in town for a show, so why not one of your books. Rob Crawford

Fake or not, a weak response will be used against us.

We should either FORCIBLY expose it as a fake, or FORCIBLY react by bombing every site we have intel indicating it's a WMD depot, regardless of which side holds it at the moment.

Interesting article in today's WSJ on Cardinal Francis George, who has become the most vocal Catholic opponent of the administration. He is quoted as saying to several Catholic politicians who were opposed to the Church's stance on an organization supporting same sex marriage:

Jesus is merciful. But he is not stupid."

he recently said "this tendency for the government to claim for itself authority over all areas of human experience flows from the secularization of our culture. If God cannot be part of public life, then the state itself plays God."

Michael Jones, the driver of the vehicle carrying the two other teenagers one of whom shot Australian baseball player Christopher Lan last week in Duncan, Okla., has been connected to other crimes in the area, according to one of the detectives on the case. The Daily Mail reports that the Ford Focus of 17-year-old Jones was repeatedly seen in connection to three separate robberies in March of this year.

daddy - This morning, I watched more of the local news than I usually do, and was not surprised by the way King 5 handled the murder of Delbert "Shorty" Belton.

They did not treat it as a lead story.

When Joyce Taylor came on, she described the suspects as "teens" and did not show the pictures from the surveillance cameras. (She has a better natural tan than I do, in case you are wondering.) They did show a long clip of some of Belton's friends telling us what a great guy he is.

It isn't hard to work out the motivation for their editorial choices.

Nor is it hard to understand why many of us have come to absolutely distrust our "mainstream" journalists on some subjects.

(Note: I saw the segment on Kong, which is where the King 5 news program goes, after the national news program starts.)

Two of the local talk show hosts, John Carlson, went too far in the opposite direction, in my opinion. Carlson discussed it in at last three hours of his four hour show, and Boze in at least two hours of his three hour show.

I think that is excessive, until we know more about the attackers.

Jim Miller

That's David Boze, if you are wondering.
