In a hard-hitting chat with Jay Leno Obama exhorted the Russian hosts not to let their anti-gay laws upset the upcoming Olympics:
THE PRESIDENT: I think Putin and Russia have a big stake in making sure the Olympics work, and I think they understand that for most of the countries that participate in the Olympics, we wouldn’t tolerate gays and lesbians being treated differently. They’re athletes, they’re there to compete. And if Russia wants to uphold the Olympic spirit, then every judgment should be made on the track, or in the swimming pool, or on the balance beam, and people’s sexual orientation shouldn’t have anything to do with it. (Applause.)
What an embarrassment Barry is.

The dolt probably does not understand the difference between the Winter Games and the Summer Games. But that memorial face plant he did on landing the Games for Chicago was absolutely a 9 or a 10 ( if you throw out the Russian judge ).
Posted by: GMax | August 07, 2013 at 10:21 AM
The clocks used on the track or at the swimming pool (even when used in Russia in 1980) neither know nor care about sexual orientation. This clown's sports knowledge is stuck at losing in pick-up basketball and cheating at golf.

As for the substance of his comment, Putin isn't going to listen to Obama for the simple reason that Putin isn't afraid that Obama is going to do anything if Putin doesn't go along with Obama... at least not anything that Putin cares about*.
* which includes Obama deciding to not meet with Putin.

I've gotten way behind here, and I can't possibly try to catch up, so forgive me if someone mentioned this in yesterday's thread. I was amazed to see Leno's interview with the Moron in Chief last night, in which Ear Leader revealed that he thought the interstate highway system was built by FDR's Works Progress Administration. Was at the oncologist's yesterday and in the waiting room there was a geezer a couple of chairs away who looked about 80, maybe a tad older.
He then described the severe heart attack he had in 1998 at the age of 84, which explained his earlier comment that maybe he was going to make it to 100 after all, since the oncologist said his scans looked good.

More idiocy from Zero last night:
And I've been talking to Congress and civil libertarians and others about are there additional ways that we can make sure that people know nobody is listening to your phone call, but we do want to make sure that after a Boston bombing, for example, we've got the phone numbers of those two brothers — we want to be able to make sure did they call anybody else? Are there networks in New York, are there networks elsewhere that we have to roll up? And if we can make sure that there's confidence on the part of the American people that there's oversight, then I think we can make sure that we're properly balancing our liberty and our security.
The entire point of the NSA, of the TSA, of Homeland Security, of all of this, is to PREVENT things like the Boston bombing! We accept some measure of survaillance and increased law enforcement presence, etc so that, in theory, the people who would carry out terror attacks will be caught BEFORE they set off their bombs!
I didn't realize that the reason for the NSA listening to every electronic communication on the planet was to hopefully identify the associates of successful terrorists after their plots have been carried out.
Silly me.

The $15 per hour fast food wage story won't go away. It seems that McDonald's stores in Australia are faced with a $14.50 minimum with a 15% increase guaranteed over the next couple of years. So MSN tells us that Big Mac prices are only 6 to 70 cents higher than prices here in the states.
How could Tom Maguire possibly be so wrong? When the other shoe dropped waaaay down in the article, it seems that minimum wages for 16 year olds is $8 not $14.50. It also appears that Aussies are eliminating labor redundancies such as cashiers and are replacing them with touchscreens.
Apparently,"equal pay for equal work" is not the rule of law in the Aussie liberal mind.

Matt-- you bring up an important point about the trade deficit. IF (God only IF) we had a POTUS like Stephen Harper (Canada PM) the last 5 years, and we aggressively exploited oil/gas resources for domestic use and export, and we refused to add to the welfare state and CUT Taxes, the current account deficit would have been slashed on energy alone, and fuel/food prices would have been musch lower for USA consumers. That would have led to a virtuous cycle of more economic growth, more USA jobs, Lower Federal spending/deficit, and LESS QE with just as low interest rates. BUT NOOOOOOO... we are stuck with the geographer - in - chief who can't find his own buggered arse with 2 hands and a flashlight.

Incompetence and Socialists just go hand in hand, todays example via Der Spiegel:
Attempts by Germany’s main opposition party, the center-left Social Democrats, to close the gap with their competitors were once again hampered on Thursday when 8,000 supposedly eco-friendly campaign posters turned to pulp in the rain. The season’s first campaign posters, which SPD candidate Peer Steinbrück had proudly presented at a press conference just 48 hours earlier, became water-logged at the first sign of rainfall and promptly fell off walls across the country. Ironically, the posters had been touted as being eco-friendly, weather-resistant and free from damaging formaldehydes, part of a new recycling initiative by SPD headquarters. None of the campaign workers could have guessed, however, how quickly the environmentally friendly process of biodegradation would begin.

According to Nielsen, at the time it was held, the most watched Olympic opening ceremony evah was the Salt Lake City Winter Games in 2002 coming in at 45.6M viewers, or 25.5% of all American tv's tuned in.
It surpassed the Atlanta Summer Games opening ceremony in 1996 which had 39.8M viewers, or 23.6% of all American tv's tuned in. The Los Angeles Summer Games had far fewer total viewers at 20M, but 23.9% of all American tv's.
The number of viewers for an Olympic Ceremony for which Obama deserves any credit is somewhere approaching 45.6M fewer than Mitt Romney deserves.

If we don't deepen our ports all along the Gulf — places like Charleston, South Carolina, or Savannah, Georgia, or Jacksonville, Florida — if we don't do that, those ships are going to go someplace else.
I seem to recall that back during the 2010 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Obama did everything in his power to make sure that no ships could enter the Gulf to help with the spill.
Why would he now care about allowing ships into the Gulf, wherever his feeble mind thinks the Gulf is?
Posted by: daddy | August 07, 2013 at 03:06 PM
I think it's a little unfair to make like he thinks SC is in the Gulf of Mexico, but I'm tellin' ya, he's looking ahead when it comes to the port depth issue. When global warming is defeated in the war on fossil fuels, the oceans will recede, and if we don't start digging now the ships will go somewhere else, where they won't be beached.
And who knows? Maybe a new gulf will appear on the east coast besides.

With the widening and added locks of the Panama Canal you need to dredge out deeper and wider port channels for those shortest-route ports like Jacksonville, Savannah and Charleston. These are main container, bulk and roll-on/roll-off ports. And dredging, port clearance and safety is the role of the Corps and Coast Guard.
What he didn't understand is these are east coast ports and New Orleans for one is also in need but has a different design dynamic. What Jacksonville has for one is a very large trans-modal presence with rail and two major interstates - I10 and I95. Takes an hour from Charleston to I95 and Savannah has a smaller interface with the interstate.
Miami doesn't have any spare capacity because of the cruise terminal but it is investing in a new access tunnel system. Still dredging and building for the coming much larger capacity ships is a must.
Posted by: JIB | August 07, 2013 at 04:10 PM

"He seriously insisted, "One of the things I've been trying to get across here is that we don't need a huge government. " He added, "But we need government doing some basic things and we should all agree on a sensible mechanism to go ahead and pay for it. Make sure we don't waste money."

I learned on the earlier thread that sbw is having treatment for prostate cancer. I had similar symptoms in 2010 and had treatment in 2011. DOT was very supportive during that time. Monday, I had my 1 1/2 year exam and PSA, and all is well. My prayers are with you sbw for comfort and healing.
