Dave (in MA)

I guess we now know what it takes for the Boston Globe to get around to reporting welfare fraud.

The offender has to nearly kill one of your employees.

henry

Dave, I didn't know Jeantel had a twin.

NK

Henry-- don't know about that. The I-93 driver is far more coherent sounding than Jeantel, even when drunk. 3 Welfare cards? God am I a sap for paying taxes for POS like this.

Jack is Back!

Dave,

She's damn lucky the guy didn't die from that crash. Wonder when he'll get his phone call from Zero.

Ignatz

Having watched none of the Zimmermen trial I have to ask how "Jeantel" is pronounced.

All froggy; Zhon-tel'?

Amuricun; Jeen'-tel?

Or is there some alternate ebonic pronunciation I'll never guess?

centralcal

Froggy, Iggy.

henry

NK, they tried to require photo ID on EBT cards here, but HHS nixed it. The Journal Sentinal reported that EBT cards were used as cash for drug buys, and the takers reporting " lost" EBT cards got unlimited replacements no questions asked.

Rob Crawford

henry -- isn't it odd how often the government which claims to be fighting a war on drugs takes actions to maintain and enable to drug trade?

Or is there some alternate ebonic pronunciation I'll never guess?

"Is smart assery a crime?"

No, and he hasn't been charge with a crime as far as I know. Cal Trans has a rule that forbids most overpass displays for safety reason. It sounded to me like he was arrested - or threatened with arrest - for intefering with a state officer in the performance of his duties.

Some Guy

I think the smartass at the 4:44 link got exactly what he had coming.

Uhmmm, no. He is a bonehead, but the CHP guy is the bigger bonehead. He shoved him nearly simultaneously with telling him to move back.

I doubt seriously he’d have done the same thing on camera if a “Justice for Trayvon” sign was the issue, and if he had, it would be the lead on the network news.

Captain Hate

Can you imagine if Gaylord went full Rupert Pupkin and had a talk show? It would make Magic Johnson and Chevy Chase look like Carson and Leno.

narciso

Ah, that reminds me, the Wurlitzer is still going on through Ebony Magazine, with Dwayne Wade, banging that drum, because 28 year neighborhood watchman are the real threat to African American youth.

centralcal

I agree with Some Guy that the CHP officer was completely out of line when he shoved the demonstrator. That was not the professional way to handle the situation and I am hoping he gets called on it by his higher ups, should the youtube video get their attention.

Living, as I do, in Fresno and knowing the overpass in question - it is a dangerous place for any kind of demonstration. I am sympathetic to what they are doing - waving impeach Obama signs - but not sure that is the best or most effective place to do it.

Another brilliant move by Weiner:

I never liked anyone who used the term, "Grandpa" in a pejorative sense. How could it be a pejorative term in a civil society?

Disagreeable, uncomfortable, embarrassing, hurtful, political speech will be met with armed resistance.

Obama hates the First Amendment and chills speech whenever he can. It started immediately with Fox News and has continued unabated.

Last Friday, restoration artists revealed that they are about halfway though the project.

The murals have brought people to the park since the 1970s, when locals first decided to take over “a small piece of barren land under the bridge” in order to defeat a plan to build a California Highway Patrol office there, according to U-T San Diego. “They negotiated with the city and state to create a park.

If you are wondering, "Has Pryor lost his damn mind?" you would be within your rights to ask the question. The answer is, in a state that Zero lost by 24% in 12 with turnout always lower in non presidential elections, in the following fact:

“There are many African-Americans who are quite bothered by some of the votes that Sen. Pryor has taken,” said Joyce Elliott, vice chairwoman of the Arkansas Democratic Party and the former state Senate majority leader. “I’ve had lots of conversations with African-Americans who just don’t want to even talk about it, who say, ‘Maybe I just won’t vote.’”

OT, there's a lot of hype about a new book,

Speaking of new books, my local Anchorage Library just instituted a revamped website, where you now enter your Library card number and PIN and 4 categories pop up: Personal Info, Checkouts, On Holds, and Fines.

I clicked on Fines and discovered that it is a record of every fine I've accumulated since 29 Jan 2007. Guess how much?

$214.69.

I'm proud of that number, darn proud!

My biggest fine was on 15 June, 2008. $35 bucks for some book I lost but have no memory of. Next biggest was $25.00, for a History of Fibonacci. This one I recall as it was in my brainbag in the cockpit and I had spilled a cup of coffee on my left console, thinking it had only fallen on the floor board but not into my brainbag, so I mopped it up off the floor with paper towels, and then a day or so later when I pulled out Fibonacci it was all moldy and the pages were stuck together, and wrinkled up like a Ruffles Potato-chip. Library refused to take it back--Rascals@#$

Anyhow, all the rest were nickel-dime late fees, never more than 4 bucks a shot, so that $214.69 was earned the hard way!

So I'm throwing the gauntlet down to you JOM Bibiliophiles:

Narciso, Porch, Captain Hate, Frau, JiB, Central, Matt, etc. Any of you guys able to top $214.69 in Library late fees?

I think you'd have to really be a Dewey Decimal scofflaw to bring Library staff down on you more than that:

jimmyk

I think everyone knows Reagan ain't walking through the door. But some of us think there are important lessons to be learned from his success vs. the failures of the likes of Dole, McCain, and Romney. And the lesson is not to be embarrassed to be conservative and move to the center to stand for nothing.

Some Guy

the failures of the likes of Dole, McCain, and Romney

Let’s not get carried away. If it weren’t for an unprecedented (and quite likely illegal) use of new technologies, Romney would have won. Which would have been an extraordinary feat, given that no sitting president as ever been as shielded by the media as Zero.

I had no desire for Romney to be the nominee going in, but he outperformed the field (by a lot) to be nominated, and was a far better candidate than Dole or McCain.

jimmyk

I haven't watched the Obama-Leno gaffe-fest, but there was another whopper I hadn't heard discussed: Obama claiming that Putin "headed up the KGB." (Putin was an officer in the KGB, but never "headed" it.)

Danube on iPad

"but we get Louis, Dewey, and Huey, Rockefeller, Scranton, and a player to be named later."

Again: tell us whom you want, Narc?

Danube on iPad

"You knew as well as anybody that Romney wouldn't win."

That strikes me as extreme revisionist history. Someone here at JOM solicited all of our predictions on the eve of the election, and I don't recall a soul who predicted anything other than a Romney win. What was your forecast?

Have you forgotten all the stuff about all the corrupt polls oversampling Democrats?

jimmyk

DoT, this isn't about naming a particular name now, three years before the convention. It's about a strategy, goals, leadership. Learning from mistakes.

As an example, I don't think the lesson from Romney is that he would have won but for " unprecedented (and quite likely illegal) use of new technologies." Romney lost because he went into a prevent defense the last three weeks, completely bombed the last debate by essentially agreeing with Obama and not attacking him on Benghazi and other failures. I don't want to rehash all that, but the point is that you don't defeat Democrats by becoming more like them. You make a compelling case for an alternative.

Threadkiller

Tom McClintock.

Some Guy

That strikes me as extreme revisionist history.

Speaking of revisionist history, why does everyone suddenly have this strange view of the GOP?

There are no TOP MEN. There is no leadership. There has NEVER been any cohesive and consistent leadership, hierarchy, or structure to the GOP as long as I’ve been alive. It has always been thus, and will likely always be like that.

It’s in the nature of the beast, and I’m actually grateful for it. The power-mad machine politicians are on the other side and fully vested in making slaves of all of us. It’s physically impossible to be a small government, liberty loving individual dedicated to original American values and constitutional principals AND be a professional politician.

Ted Cruz is doing his best to address the core beliefs of the conservative/Reaganite wing of the Repub party.

Here is an interesting interview with him: http://rare.us/story/interview-with-sen-ted-cruz-republican-defeatism-surprises-me/

He is overtly sounding the themes of RR - notice his use of the famous "pale pastels" quote of Reagan's?

But I have a lot of reservations about the wisdom behind the "Let's de-fund Obamacare" movement . . .

"We should fund the entire government except Obamacare. This will lead to an impasse, with the president insisting that unless Obamacare is allowed to take effect, he will shut down the government. We should welcome this debate. Obamacare is unpopular, and the more people hear, the less they like it. We can win, but it will require a huge communications effort to make the case."

IMO, Repubs need to remember that this is a nation of too many LIV's, and that any government shutdown will *never* be portrayed by the MFM as the fault of *any* Dem. I don't see the upcoming debt limit deadline as an opportunity to "force" anything on Obama.

DublinDave

Everyone knows the Obama "Bar" story from his early Chicago days; he and Michelle were in a bar after some class and Barrack went to use the Mens room. Some guy came over and started chatting up Michelle and when Barrack came back the guy pulled a knife on him. Barrack looked at the guy, smiled, then head butted him sending him to the ground. Then Barrack broke the guys arm in two places and picked up the knife. Sensing he had some friends in the bar, Barrack looked around and said "Any of you bitches want a piece of Barrack step up now or go back to your drinks."The bar literally fell silent, everyone, including some of the hardened criminals who had done serious time were scared. Barrack handed Michelle her coat, barrack folded the knife and threw it at the guy on the ground and then he and Michelle casually walked out the door. Now I know President Obama gets embarrassed when that story is asked about this episode. Charlie rose asked the President if it actually happened and the President said it didn't.Rose followed up by asking the President why this situation embarrassed him. After a long pause the President said "Violence is a last resort for me and it's not something I'm proud of".

I'd like to see president Obama pick a fight with Putin next month and kick his ass in front of the Russian people.

Ignatz

The problem is not in the men, it's in the philosophy.
We don't need a personality to walk through a doorway, we need some guiding, fricking principles, not this insipid quest for "electability" which puts the cart before the horse and is DOOMed to failure even when it wins an occasional election.

Build and adhere to a systematic conservative/libertarian domestic policy of growth and stick to it and the supposed inevitable trends dooming the country to everlasting failure would reverse faster than you can say 'black people used to be Republicans'.

I didn't suggest that it was. I was addressing the retroactive contention that we all knew Romney would lose. We didn't know any such thing. But if one claims that we did, it is incumbent on him to identify the person who he thinks would have won. I am still waiting.

As for 2016, i am in agreement with the notion that there is no need to name a particular candidate now. I would just like to know who JOMers believe are potentially winning candidates. At this point I am prepared to rule out Rand Paul, Marco Rubio and Rick Santorum. Further the affiant sayeth naught.
