Barry seems to be having limited success moving the public:
NBC poll: Nearly 80 percent want congressional approval on Syria
http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/08/30/20256971-nbc-poll-nearly-80-percent-want-congressional-approval-on-syria#comments
In this new NBC poll, 50 percent of respondents oppose the United States taking military action in response to Syria’s suspected use of chemical weapons, compared with 42 percent who support it.
That's a little bit better support for bombing than the beginning of the week, but not much better.
Not surprisingly, the public in not very impressed with Barry's handling of the situation:
He gets even lower marks on foreign policy: Just 41 percent approve of his handling of the issue – an all-time low.
And only 35 percent approve of his handling of the situation in Syria.

British press is all kerplumpf over losing that "special relationship" kind of feeling but not so much so since its a laugh a minute at the incompetence and naiveté of The One.
Kind on neat to be sitting in Europe long the butt-end of our own derision to see the mirror flipped toward the west. Even under Bush there was a certain respect for his leadership and determination even though he was a cowboy and dangerous in their estimation. Now the veneer has been stripped of the man-child and they are not impressed any longer.

Happy Birthday, Elliott!
Posted by: Ignatz | August 30, 2013 at 09:08 AM
Another day, another leak that makes Obama look bad. Yesterday it was the intel folk putting the kibosh on the "slam dunk". Today it is the pentagon voicing reservations:
U.S. military officers have deep doubts about impact, wisdom of a U.S. strike on Syria
http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/us-military-officers-have-deep-doubts-about-impact-wisdom-of-a-us-strike-on-syria/2013/08/29/825dd5d4-10ee-11e3-b4cb-fd7ce041d814_story.html
Some questioned the use of military force as a punitive measure and suggested that the White House lacks a coherent strategy. If the administration is ambivalent about the wisdom of defeating or crippling the Syrian leader, possibly setting the stage for Damascus to fall to fundamentalist rebels, they said, the military objective of strikes on Assad’s military targets is at best ambiguous.
I think that pretty much sums it up.

"We need really, really smart bombs."
Hit,
That's rank discrimination. Who is going to determine which bombs are really smart? Are you going to use some sort of testing where only right answers count or will the Lawrence Tribe standard of "special intelligence" be acceptable? What about bombs that just don't test well but have otherwise remarkable attributes?
Isn't it more important that our bombs reflect a rainbow of diversity as they seek the targets best suited to their self concept of their own ability?
Posted by: Account Deleted | August 30, 2013 at 09:17 AM
If the bomb is guided by a teleprompter, it will appear smart.

Happy Birthday Elliot,
11 years ago in the US Junior Amateur, Elliot's heroics in match play caught the eye of Golfweek and he was featured in an article by Graham Elliot (of course:).
Since its public information, there is no intent to embarrass Elliot but only to showcase his immense talent scholastically as well as in golf. He was only 17 at the time, so I guess its Happy 28th Birthday, Elliot.

Hot Air has a good post on how we got here:
The ad-libbed war?
http://hotair.com/archives/2013/08/30/the-ad-libbed-war/
And points out an important factor, this was all about Obama puffing his chest out to get himself re-elected.
Dwyer refers to Obama as a “tortured spirit,” who never wanted to find himself in this position. Even at the time, though, it was clear that Obama did want to put himself in this position — while hoping that Assad wouldn’t call his bluff. Obama was in the middle of a presidential campaign which had begun to position him as the experienced foreign-policy hand, and the administration had spent the last few months bragging about its intervention in Libya. Talking tough with Assad was designed to leverage his supposed success in Libya on the international stage as well as increase his standing at home, before the attack on our consulate in Benghazi exposed the disaster that Western intervention caused.
So just remind all the LIVs you know, that a vote for a democrat is a vote to bomb an Arab country.

IF WE WERE REALLY SERIOUS ABOUT ENDING THIS WHOLE DAMN THING THEN THE WEST/NATO WOULD ATTACK IRAN AND NOT SYRIA :WE'D NEUTRALIZE THEIR AIR FORCE, NAVY, THE IRG AND TAKE OUT ALL THEIR NUCLEAR ASSETS.
AND WE'D GET THE KURDS TO DECLARE AN INDEPENDENT KURDISH STATE WITH THEIR IRAQ, IRAN, SYRIAN, AND TURKISH OCCUPIED TERRITORIES.
THEY COULD CONTINUE SHARING OIL REVENUE WITH IRAQ FOR A DECADE OR SO. UNLESS THEY ARE ATTACKED BY ANY PREVIOUS OCCUPIER.
WITH ISRAEL AND KURDISTAN, THE WEST WOULD HAVE TWO STABLE ALLIES IN THE REGION.
WE COULD THEN HELP THE ARMY STABILIZE EGYPT AND HELP KING HUSSEIN STABILIZE JORDAN.
THIS WOULD SEND THE RIGHT MESSAGE.
DOMESTICALLY: WE NEED TO PASS A LAW MAKING IT ILLEGAL FOR MOSQUES AND MADRASSAS AND ISLAMIC SCHOOL, AND OTHER ISLAMIC INSTITUTIONS TO ACCEPT MONEY FROM OVERSEAS AND ANY FOREIGN NATION. PUNISHABLE BY SEIZURE OF ALL ASSETS AND PROSECUTION AS AN ILLEGAL AGENT OF A FOREIGN NATION AND/OR SEDITION/TREASON.
IF WE WERE SERIOUS ABOUT DEFENDING THE FREE WORLD THEN WE'D TAKE THESE STEPS SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.
ONCE IRAN GETS ONE NUKE, IT'S OVER FOR US ALL.

Aim of U.S. Attack: Restore a ‘Red Line’ That Became Blurred
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/30/world/middleeast/aim-of-a-us-attack-on-syria-sharpening-a-blurred-red-line.html
WASHINGTON — The goal of the cruise missile strikes the United States is planning to carry out in Syria is to restore the smudged “red line” that President Obama drew a year ago against the use of poison gas.
Note the use of the passive voice. I wonder how that line got so smudged?

"How long would Volodya keep resupplying, and the consequences of if he does"
Narciso,
The Russian mob appears to be playing a deeper game than the silliness of Slap BOzo Day (after day after day). I'd bet on a very strong resupply effort and I wouldn't be surprised to find out they had furnished Syria with armaments sufficient to give the US a real black eye. DoT mentioned a missile hit but the Russians also have mine/torpedoes that can "sleep" on the sea floor until needed. They are not easy to find at all. It would just be bad luck if one of our destroyers came within range but we are talking about a BOzo operation.
The short answer is that Russia has strategic objectives and I don't believe dumping Assad is in their plans.

And the press is starting to notice the little issue of international law:
Obama Striking Assad Risks International Law Conflict
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-08-29/obama-striking-assad-risks-international-law-conflict.html
It is also interesting to note, that Obama claimed he didn't need congressional approval for the Libya fandango, because there was a UNSC resolution authorizing it. Now he wants to claim he doesn't need the UN either.
This little bit is an interesting note:
Benjamin Wittes, a senior fellow focusing on national security legal issues at the Brookings Institution in Washington, said that the Obama administration is operating without a Senate-confirmed top legal adviser at the Departments of State or Defense, or permanent leadership in the Justice Department’s national-security division.
That just re-enforces how little respect ObamaCo has for the law in general I guess.
Posted by: Ranger | August 30, 2013 at 11:47 AM
In his conceit and arrogance, Obama believed that his power and prestige was based on himself.
He never considered that those qualities were dependent on his office as President of the United States, the leader of the last remaining superpower and the defender of the Free World.
He sought to "take America down a peg" and make us just another country like the UK, France, Germany, Spain, et al.
He undermined America's credibility with his apology tour and constant assertions that America was the major source of what was wrong with the world.
He undermined America's and the world's faith in America's intelligence gathering capabilities with his constant accusations of "Bush Lied!" due to Bush's reliance on faulty intelligence in Iraq.
He conducted a war in Libya without Congressional authorization, despite his and Biden's accusation that Bush was guilty of impeachable offenses because of the Iraq War, even though it WAS authorized by a Congressional AUMF.
And now he wonders why no one trusts him or the US regarding Syria?
I could enjoy the Schadenfreude if only it didn't also further destroy America's credibility and standing in the world.

John Yoo has the curse of intellectual consistency and honesty. Thus when AQ wantonly violates the requirements of Geneva's Conventions, he correctly concludes that AQ are not lawful combatants entitled to Geneva protections given to SOLDIERS. And when US treaty obligations have specific definitions of torture, which don't include 'well doing that is kinda icky' Yoo refuses to make up a new definition never ratified by the Senate. He is and intellectually gifted and honest man-- I wish we had men like him in government now.

Lyle, music at Yale is something special. Congrats to your wife! The people I know in New Haven are lefties, so I don't go there much anymore.

I accepted this a given. The recital is in honor of Madeleine Forte's 75th birthday. She is the wife of a Yale musicologist emeritus prof.
New Haven ain't Kansas, it ain't even the Bronx.
I understand the area around the campus is...a bit rough.

PS: ditto to Henry's comment: giving a piano recital at Yale is a big deal in my book... it takes talent and dedication to get there. Congrats to Mrs. Lyle.

lyle,
What a treat. I wish I could go. Of course, there would be a question of whether I'm worthy.

It appears that the Peanut Farmer will never die:
"A punitive military response without a U.N. Security Council mandate or broad support from NATO and the Arab League would be illegal under international law and unlikely to alter the course of the war," he wrote in a statement. "It will only harden existing positions and postpone a sorely needed political process to put an end to the catastrophic violence."

Thanks all for the congrats. Madeleine was Mrs. lyle's piano instructor at our humble alma mater, Boise State, for all of her undergrad and part of her graduate work. They are very close friends. It is not a solo recital for the missus and in fact she will be a relatively small contributor with a four hand Beethoven march. The other pianists are former students of Madeleine's and a few are top flight international soloists/stars.

Meltdown not in Syria cleared to go. Via Insty, San Bernadino bankruptcy is a go. Calpers & unions hardest hit, federal court ruling a pattern for all blue hells -- Detroit, IL that means you.

Take it easy on that Carter stuff, you two do share a Canoe U pedigree. But you are right, Carter's too full of piss, bile and himself to ever die... and the thing he's married to is meaner than a snake.

Reading over my comments, I neglected to mention Madeleine is a fabulously accomplished pianist herself and has played Carnegie Hall. She's something of a Chopin specialist.

Henry-- well ... we'll have to se what the 9th Circuit and SCOTUS say about San Bernadino. In the meantime, AFSCME will definitely be pressuring the Detroit unions to settle, before there are too many negative pension decisions out of bankruptcy courts and all the Blue Cities and Counties head into bankruptcy. It is all proceeding as anyone who thought about the muni finance debt bomb has foretold.

Hi all. My son is in his fifth week of boot camp. He's told me he's being told that WW3 is very near. Not in months, but in weeks.
I'm so frightened. Any words of encouragement for me?

Lyle - I don't have your email address on my list (but email lists float around in flavors that compete in number with Baskin Robbins).
You can send to jomhitandrun@gmail.com if you would prefer not to broadcast it here.
