We are intrigued by this progression of the NY Times coverage of a warehousing "scandal" supposedly orchestrated by Goldman Sachs to fleece the world's users of aluminum. From July 20:
MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. — Hundreds of millions of times a day, thirsty Americans open a can of soda, beer or juice. And every time they do it, they pay a fraction of a penny more because of a shrewd maneuver by Goldman Sachs and other financial players that ultimately costs consumers billions of dollars.
...
...the efforts by Goldman and other financial players has cost American consumers more than $5 billion over the last three years, say former industry executives, analysts and consultants.
$5 billion? BS. - the US market for aluminum in the last three years was about $26 billion, and no one is alleging that his scheme has driven prices up by 20%.
But now the Times has backed up quite a bit; this is from July 31:
Goldman Sachs has offered to speed up delivery of aluminum stored in warehouses that it controls as federal authorities examine how delays at the facilities have driven up the price of the metal.
Under scrutiny for the long waits that have cost manufacturers — and ultimately consumers — many millions of dollars, Goldman said on Wednesday that its warehouse unit, Metro International Trade Services, would give customers who store aluminum at the warehouses immediate access to their metal.

Happy Birthday and enjoy your Nantucket sojourn. Much like Southampton but without the bluffs.
Frederick has to do 10 science/current events journal entries for summer work plus a book report and 15 pages of math. So, today its about Bronchial Asthma since Mrs. JiB experienced that this summer. Is all in who, what, where, when, why journalistic style which no one in the MSM practices anymore.

Left to their own devices, producers and purchasers of a commodity will freely devolve into an arrangement whereby sales will take place in both a spot and a futures market. Every party on each side of every transaction is better off after the transaction is completed; otherwise the transaction would not have occurred.
It is inconceivable to the New York Times that there is not something wicked going on in all of this - after all, people are making money, and that's never a good thing in their eyes.

"Think of it as a jobs program inspired by low interest rates."
Not even. Alcoa chopped another 800 jobs in '12. That's a lot better than the 6-7,000 reported in '10 but the '12 report acknowledges the '10 losses to be permanent.
On the bright side, the Saudi partnership venture is doing well and should contribute to the Alcoa bottom line very soon.

My mother was an industrial nurse at a Reynolds aluminum can plant in the 70's. I loved walking the line there as a child. All those cans spinning around. Automation machinery, baby.
Posted by: Skoot | August 03, 2013 at 06:55 PM
The NYT overvalued* aluminum warehousing by a factor of 1000! That makes their Boston Globe investment a steal, only overvalued by 100.
Posted by: henry | August 03, 2013 at 07:22 PM
Oops, I forgot to explain the *
*this assumes no further adjustments in the estimate. It is likely the warehousing is a net benefit rather than a cost, provided efficient logistics on the warehousing side. GS promises to do better on that (and has development opportunities in Detroit for believers).
Posted by: henry | August 03, 2013 at 07:28 PM
Automation won't keep the commie scum from running a shakedown, Skoot. We talk about St. Jane's but Alcoa teams up with a monarchy and shutters plants in the US, Italy and Spain to compensate for the political risk in the US and Eutopia having risen to the point where further investment or risk taking (Shell, Chukchi) appears imprudent.
The NYT, as the propaganda organ of the Democrat Party, is shaking down the Vampire Squid for the '14 campaign. The propagandists acknowledge that absolutely nothing illegal has occurred but the Vampire Squid is still going to amend practices, damaging clients and partners in the process. Then they will make the necessary "contributions" to stay out of the spotlight.
I'd pay to watch the Vampire Squid choke to death on its own vomit but there is a need to clearly identify the extortion being committed by the Democrat Party because there are no barriers to it being extended dramatically.
It's not as if we have a legal system.

Speaking of chickenshit reporting...
The other day we got notified that as of immediately our catering out of China would not include any poultry items due to some mass contamination in China of poultry. Instead it advised us to make another selection---beef, pork etc.
So last night we came in from Tokyo to Shanghai and what was our cargo?
Thousands and thousands of baby chickens. Peep, peep, peep!
That tells me that the contamination story was true.
I had not been doing much China recently so this may have been going on for a few months---this Japanese Newspaper story from May tells us that the Chinese Poultry contamination was widespread and that it even affected Japan McDonalds:
a Japanese news outfit, allegedly carried out a supporting investigation and discovered that some of the chicken used by McDonald’s in Japan comes from the same food manufacturer in Hanan, China. At the very least, there is a possibility that some of the diseased chicken meat might have found its way into the Japanese fast food market
Bet that cost McDonald's 17%, even without raising their minimum wages!
JOMer's will recall the 16,000 dead pigs floating in the Shanghai River from a few months back. Now we have massive Chicken culls going on. I liked the old days when you could go to a Chinese Restaurant and order "1 from column A, 1 from Column B", etc.
Pretty much nowadays it's down to "1 from Column C."
Good Morning.

Dub's probably right that nothing will come of these scandals, at least until we elect a president who'll instruct the AG to investigate and prosecute crimes committed by government officials. Under Obama, Democrats are enjoying a lawless environment. They can do anything they want, as long as it's in the service of the hive, and they know they won't be prosecuted or even fired. They can intimidate citizens, break laws, lie to Congress, take the fifth, ignore subpoenas, and who's going to do anything about it? No one.

Perhaps Obama & Clinton had no idea what was going on. Obama's just the front man while radical leftists are doing whatever they want....& Clinton...what?...what has she ever done? She's just incompetent too.

Personally, I think the fact that the organizers of this attack, were connected to the original arms pipeline into Libya, makes more sense, from Bel Hadj who was Qatar's man, to bin Qumu, they put Khattalah out there, but he's a minnow in the big scheme of things.

I agree with Powerline guy - there are still so many questions. Let's say we conclude that CIA was indeed assisting with running arms to Syria. How does it help explain what happened in Benghazi? If anything you would think the presence of greater numbers of CIA on the ground would have meant better protection for Stevens, not worse. No wonder they're being muzzled.
If only we had reporters, someone might ask someone a question or two.

Not just for the specific story...but to point out what has been going on for decades.
I wrote this on FB with a link to the article -
"This has been going on for decades. Bible-believing Christian books are almost never highlighted in "news"papers or on TV....even if they are hugely popular. When "The Purpose Driven Life" was at the center of a news story some years ago (captured woman spoke to her captor about the book & he released her)...all of a sudden the public heard of this book that had already sold millions of copies. Only books bashing Biblical Christianity are peddled in the WaPo, NYT,...or on the Today show & other old media outlets.
Same thing happens in education. A teacher is not allowed to promote Christianity (understandable), but they ARE allowed to bash Christianity & our Judeo-Christian heritage. So it really doesn't end up being about keeping religion out of the classroom as much as keeping anything POSITIVE about certain religions out of the classroom."

Interesting review of Aslan's book and another revisionist history of the early Church in yesterday's WSJ.
I believe the desire to portray the Lord as a zealot is a part of the Leftist propaganda machine's campaign to paint conservatives as the evil Romans.
By casting Jesus as a zealot they achieve a twofer; Jesus was a radical just like the OWS'ers and Jesus was a crazy if they want him to have been so in order to discredit organized religion. And Jesus is on the side of the redistributionists.
This is particularly funny when one looks at our oligarchy today who are secular heathen for the most part.
The authors seem to ignore the heresy of Jesus that was at the core of the Sanhedrin's hatred and abomination of Jesus. He was the ultimate outsider and yet the ultimate expositor of the Jewish faith according to Christian doctrine and history.
Revisionism has been all the rage and it would seem that, while trying to be provocative and sell books these are just two more example of trying to fit a 33AD narrative into a 2013AD box.

Stacy Lewis just won the Ladies British Open at St. Andrews as a young Korean lady bogeyed her way out of the lead. But Lewis won it by birdying 17 (the road hole) and 18.
First American win in a major in the last 10!

Leading from behind closed doors.
What makes them think the threat expires on Monday morning? If I am the bad guys, I just decide to postpone the action until, say, some innocuous Wednesday in the not too distant future?

Jesus was both reactionary and revolutionary, but in the spiritual realm. When anyone attempts to use Him for their temporal political purposes it's best to remember what He said;

Watching "Top Gun" - on Telemundo. Everything from Tom Cruise's slicked down hair and big sunglasses to the overly emotive soundtrack makes a lot more sense in Spanish.

JIB, I asked the same question of my husband this morning, thinking I'd missed some key day-specific element of this threat.

"How does it help explain what happened in Benghazi?"
Porchlight,
Perhaps Benghazi and the President's current depression can best be understood by looking at the intersection of Progressive Underpants Gnome (PUG) policies with reality. Keep the picture of the President lecturing on Marxist drivel which Narciso posts occasionally in mind and consider the PUG Arab Spring as a logical consequence of applying the level of ignorance required to believe the drivel to tweeting Hope and Change across a region with an average IQ of 70. The French and the Brits went along for the ride for an oil payoff and the al Sissi interview in the WaPo makes it crystal clear the Egyptian military went along with the tweetfest on the basis of promises Obama had no ability (or intention) of keeping.
Putin has tired of watching the collisions of PUG policy with reality and decided an intervention is in order before the President hurts himself. The other aspect to the President's depression may be related to Jack Lew mentioning we're really broke plus the anecdotal evidence that training 10,000 Ms Jeantel's to man the Obamacare call centers is proving somewhat more difficult than envisioned when that particular PUG policy was established.
