The next round of IPCC reports on climate change will take an even less equivocal position on anthropogenic global warming:
Climate Panel Cites Near Certainty on Warming
An international panel of scientists has found with near certainty that human activity is the cause of most of the temperature increases of recent decades, and warns that sea levels could conceivably rise by more than three feet by the end of the century if emissions continue at a runaway pace.
The scientists, whose findings are reported in a draft summary of the next big United Nations climate report, largely dismiss a recent slowdown in the pace of warming, which is often cited by climate change doubters, attributing it most likely to short-term factors.
The report emphasizes that the basic facts about future climate change are more established than ever, justifying the rise in global concern. It also reiterates that the consequences of escalating emissions are likely to be profound.
“It is extremely likely that human influence on climate caused more than half of the observed increase in global average surface temperature from 1951 to 2010,” the draft report says. “There is high confidence that this has warmed the ocean, melted snow and ice, raised global mean sea level and changed some climate extremes in the second half of the 20th century.”
...
The 2007 report found “unequivocal” evidence of warming, but hedged a little on responsibility, saying the chances were at least 90 percent that human activities were the cause. The language in the new draft is stronger, saying the odds are at least 95 percent that humans are the principal cause.
I wonder whether this will change anyone's mind about the underlying reality or the appropriate response. The Times provides this incomplete taxonomy:
Some climate doubters challenge the idea that the earth is warming at all; others concede that it is, but deny human responsibility; still others acknowledge a human role, but assert that the warming is likely to be limited and the impacts manageable. Every major scientific academy in the world has warned that global warming is a serious problem.
Hmm, what do the Times consider those of us who think that, whether the climate impact is manageable or not, the proposed remediations are too expensive, insufficient, and, since China and India have not been on board, incomplete? On the question of China, this report is interesting - higher sea levels will hit China hard.
When greens back nuclear (esp. thorium) and the substitution of fracked natural gas for coal I will believe that they believe we have a global warming crisis.
test.

Surely you have some sympathy for those who yearn for the days of yore when Gaia could be only propitiated by a noble savage raising the still beating heart of an enslaved captive above an altar blackened with the dried blood of ten thousand such sacrifices? Paying barely sacrificial air taxes to build totems to the SkyDragon is a pretty pathetic substitute for traditional methods.

Beasts,
Sorry to hear about your friend. I have a 24 yo niece who is in heroin's hand and has been fighting it for 5 years. Unfortunate as she comes from a good old Atlanta family and she just can't break it.
I may be at a mutual friend's house down in Mobile at the end of Sept for a long weekend. Any chance you are going to be down that way any time soon? Also heading to Biloxi or Pearl River in the weekend of Oct 24-27. Awesome tournament if you want to join us and play. The mutual friend usually goes to the tournament, too. Lots of gambling and some seriously major money changes hands (not mine). Email me at stephaniegaatl@yahoo . com for more info if you are interested or if you want to know who our mutual friend is... ;)

Thanks, all. She's a kid who's had a rough life in so many areas. The trauma that's wrapped her up the most is her former husband was deployed to Afghanistan, saw some real atrocities and couldn't deal with it when he returned. She went to the store one day and returned home to see him hanging from the staircase. His family blamed her. Not making excuses at all, but I'm not sure how I'd ever process that myself.
As I mentioned, I won't take her back, but I'll love her and pray for her; and help in some way at a distance. Damn it, it's so sad.

narciso's 10:31 link to Ed Driscoll is something.
In the post he links to this old post about JournoList...the "non-official campaign" - http://pjmedia.com/eddriscoll/2010/07/22/your-daily-caller-journolist-document-drop-du-jour/
a bit - "Daniel Levy of the Century Foundation noted that Obama’s “non-official campaign” would need to work hard to discredit Palin."
He then quotes Levy's JournoList email.
The Century Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization.
All this crap is going on while the IRS is targeting conservative groups & some Congressional Black Caucus Representatives are working with McClatchy News to slander Tea Party groups as racist.
Posted by: Janet --- -... .- -- .- ... ..- -.-. -.- ... | August 21, 2013 at 04:37 AM
We only saw some of the JournoList conversations...what was being talked about in 2010? I noticed that many of the members were from 501(c)3 & 4 organizations. Here is an incomplete list that I started from the JournoList membership list at - http://thevailspot.blogspot.com/2011/01/journolist-membership.html
501(c)3 organizations & two 501(c)4 organizations -
40. Matt Duss - Center for American Progress
21. Ben Brandzel - MoveOn.org
14. Jared Bernstein - Economic Policy Institute
5. Eric Alterman - Media Matters for America
7. Greg Anrig - The Century Foundation
29. Michael Cohen - New America Foundation
46. Jason Furman - Brookings Institution
50. Ilan Goldenberg - National Security Network (501(c)4)
73. Robert Kuttner - Economic Policy Institute
76. Daniel Levy - Century Foundation
81. Maggie Mahar - The Century Foundation
85. Sara Mead - New America Foundation
91. Suzanne Nossel - Human Rights Watch
99. Ari Rabin-Havt - Media Matters
102. Lamar Robertson - Partnership for Public Service
103. Sara Robinson - Campaign For America's Future (501(c)4)
etc.
JournoList was supposedly shut down June 25, 2010 (according to wiki)....so all this coordination is goin' on while "patriotic, constitutional, Christian or tea party groups are still waiting for their tax exemptions."
How JournoList wasn't a HUGE story is beyond me. The coordination between lib.advocacy organizations, "journalists" & government agencies is something.
Americans need to see the big picture of what all was/is going on.

Verbatim: UPS is telling its employees that their spouses may not get Health Insurance next year. In a memo to 15,000 white collar workers UPS writes "the costs associated with the Affordable Care Act, have made it increasingly difficult to continue providing the same level of health care benefits to our employees at an affordable cost". UPS expects the move to save about 60 Million dollars a year. Excluding working spouses is part of a growing trend..(.the rest was inaudible for transcribing.)

Hemingway gave morale speeches to groups of rag tag troops,he felt he had to represent the honor of the United States, but realized the absurdity. STOP STOP STOP!!!!! I can't take it anymore. For years I've listened to Conservatives rant on about the ramifications of Obamacare and how it must be repealed. I've watched the house pass 40 legislative measures to repeal it, I've listened to cries-nay screams from the right on how they're going to repeal it, Fox news devotes 16 hours of news per day on why we should repeal it and yet when an opportunity to actually defend it comes along every Republican run and hides under a rock shaking in their boots and peeing in their panties.
That's like going into a bar and telling everyone when you find the town brawler you're going to beat the crap out of him cause he tried to feel your wife up,then going into the local pool hall and telling everyone how you're going hospitalize the town bralwer when you run into him and what a dead man he is and then walking down the street telling everyone you pass how the town bralwer is history once you get a hold of him only to be told by one passer by that the town brawler just sat down at the local cafe next street over to have his breakfast.......then you say "well,I don't want to interupt his breakfast but when I get hold of him he's dead".
Let's talk about the ramifications of being a chicken shit political party.

We are all used to the left's fake attacks on our candidates, and fake bolstering of theirs. For example they are now saying that Ted Cruz' co-students at Princeton didn't like him or some such BS.
We need a name for this stuff - a name that everyone can yell out and laugh at. It needs to signify that the allegation is political and only aimed at undermining honest discussion. And it should also telegraph liberal fear.
And we need to make it so common that even the media adopts it.
Any ideas?

jimmyk, I agree 100%. The problem is that your view requires both the journalists and government personnel to be far more moral and decent human beings than they mostly seem to be.
If there was less gov't abuse of power (and all-encompassing secrecy so that even things that have no business being classified end up that way), there'd be less need for journalists to dig into secrets.
And if the journalists were, in general, more interested, as you say, in reporting the news than in becoming the next Woodward and Bernstein; and if they actually had the slightest understanding of the world and of history and even a smidgen of loyalty to their country and their fellow citizens...they'd both have enough judgment to know what should be public and what shouldn't, and to act correctly on that judgment.
But none of that's true, unfortunately.

OT, I've got a research question for my next book. Has anyone here golfed at the Army-Navy Country club in Arlington?
If so, are there any interesting little details you can share about the club itself, or specifically the golf course? Is there a particularly nasty hole or a water hazard that a novice golfer could have an extremely bad time with?
My heroine has wrangled an invitation so her father can play a round there, which he's wanted to do since the family moved down to the DC area. And she has to come along and actually play as part of the foursoume, which will mean a VERY long and trying day for her.
I'd just like to include a couple of accurate details to give the scene a little more life, if possible.
Thanks!

Marlene, I was unaware of that and other related things because the review I read created an interest in the topic where only disinterest was previously. Again what fascinates me the most is how much FDR resembled the JEF in his ability to make everything about him including telling stories of his grifter relatives making large amounts of money in China while ignoring the dynamics of what was going on which he subsequently mismanaged.

Jane,
I don't see why someone would work on defending Cruz when they could be working on Senate seats. Alaska, Arkansas, Montana, South Dakota, Colorado, Lousiana, Virginia and West Virginia are all possible pickups.

James D,
Haven't played it in years. Played Fairfax more than Arlington but if memory serves me correctly, No. 4 is a devilish short par 5 - double dog leg that always gave me a problem. I think No. 9 is a short par 4 which used to be drivable for me but not any longer:) Wish I could add more. Not long and only par 70.

The always-entertaining, and sometimes right, Camille Paglia in Salon:
"As a registered Democrat, I am praying for a credible presidential candidate to emerge from the younger tier of politicians in their late 40s. A governor with executive experience would be ideal. It’s time to put my baby-boom generation out to pasture! We’ve had our day and managed to muck up a hell of a lot. It remains baffling how anyone would think that Hillary Clinton (born the same year as me) is our party’s best chance. She has more sooty baggage than a 90-car freight train. And what exactly has she ever accomplished — beyond bullishly covering for her philandering husband? She’s certainly busy, busy and ever on the move — with the tunnel-vision workaholism of someone trying to blot out uncomfortable private thoughts.
I for one think it was a very big deal that our ambassador was murdered in Benghazi. In saying “I take responsibility” for it as secretary of state, Hillary should have resigned immediately. The weak response by the Obama administration to that tragedy has given a huge opening to Republicans in the next presidential election. The impression has been amply given that Benghazi was treated as a public relations matter to massage rather than as the major and outrageous attack on the U.S. that it was.
Throughout history, ambassadors have always been symbolic incarnations of the sovereignty of their nations and the dignity of their leaders. It’s even a key motif in “King Lear.” As far as I’m concerned, Hillary disqualified herself for the presidency in that fist-pounding moment at a congressional hearing when she said, “What difference does it make what we knew and when we knew it, Senator?” Democrats have got to shake off the Clinton albatross and find new blood. The escalating instability not just in Egypt but throughout the Mideast is very ominous. There is a clash of cultures brewing in the world that may take a century or more to resolve — and there is no guarantee that the secular West will win."

Too many stories to link; AmSpec is particularly good today on a wide range of topics.

Jane: We need a name for this stuff - a name that everyone can yell out and laugh at. It needs to signify that the allegation is political and only aimed at undermining honest discussion. And it should also telegraph liberal fear.
It is not BS, where the person doesn't know or care about truth.
It really is "noise" injected into the discussion to derail that discussion.
But it is worse than noise, because it is intentional, vicious noise that shows no respect for politics and the citizens who participate in it.
The only question unanswered is whether the vicious noise perp was ignorant or anti-society.
Given the benefit of the doubt, I'll call the vicious noise perp ignorant. A failure of schools to teach what matters in civil society.

"Look! Squirrel!
"junior high mean girl crap"

Now can we make an acronym of one of these?
e.g Made up stuff to appeal to LIV's who are clueless.
MUSTATLIVWAC - really doesn't work all that well.
