Per this NY Times account, John Kerry's suggestion that Syria could spare tha world a lot of aggro by unilaterally turning over its chemical weapons (a proposal Kerry promptly and premptively poo-poohed as improbable) has picked up Russian support:
[Russian foreign minister] Lavrov appeared at a previously unscheduled briefing only hours after Mr. Kerry made his statement in London, seizing on it as a possible compromise.
“We don’t know whether Syria will agree with this, but if the establishment of international control over chemical weapons in the country will prevent attacks, then we will immediately begin work with Damascus,” Mr. Lavrov said at the Foreign Ministry. “And we call on the Syrian leadership to not only agree to setting the chemical weapons storage sites under international control, but also to their subsequent destruction.”
Mr. Moallem said later in a statement that his government welcomed the Russian proposal, Russia’s Interfax News Agency reported, in what appeared to be the first acknowledgment by the Syrian government that it even possesses chemical weapons. The Syrian government historically has neither confirmed nor denied possessing such weapons.
I don't think Kerry is outsmarting anyone (what's unbelievably small is his common sense), so this might just be an alternative way for Syria to run out the clock as they haggle over terms.
On the other hand, Russia might be looking for a face-saving way to bring Syria a bit closer to international norms, or at least to gracefully distance themselves from them.
And it certainly gives Obama a face-saving excuse to do nothing for a few weeks. Win-win-win!
NOBODY'S FOOL: The Times is all over the four-corner ploy:
Obama administration officials have discussed the idea of presenting Mr. Assad with an ultimatum. But officials are wary of giving the Syrian leader an opportunity to play for time, and carrying out inspections to make sure the Syrian government has not retained hidden stocks of poison gas as fighting rages appeared to be a near impossibility.
LIVE IMPROV WITH J KERRY: From CNN:
But as Russia and Syria later suggested that it could be done, the State Department later sought to clarify Kerry's comment as a "rhetorical argument."
One U.S. official called Kerry's remarks a "major goof," adding that America's top diplomat "clearly went off script."
"There is no one in the administration who is taking this Syria proposal seriously," the official said.
GIVE PEACE A CHANCE! Team Obama will study the Russian proposal, Harry Reid will delay the Senate vote, and the diplomats win. Stephen Hayes explains that Team Obama will insist that it was Obama's forceful resolve that led to this happy talkfest. Uh huh - the threat of an "unbelievably small" attack focused Syrian minds.
Groan. Will it be days, weeks or months before Obama and his press lackeys are telling the world that only Obama's calm patience and steely resolve held off the warmongering Republicans? I think "days".
The Russians certainly had more of a role, developing the weaponizing capacity, of course, the notion they were the lesser evil, fostered by Labour as well as Tories didn't help;

Let us all agree that Obama will suffer humiliation akin to that spread on Jimmy Carter. What, then, will happen? The end of Obamacare? Debt restructuring? The truth of Benghazi? IRS? NSA? EIEIO?
The infrastructure is so massively corrupt that not even this sort of blow can affect it. Were Nixon President now would he walk away unscathed?
Nothing matters. Nothing.

History will remember that a monster who used chemical weapons on women and children pissed his panties when threatened by the Obama administration and moved quickly relinquished control of them.
President Obama forced a tyrant to give up his weapons of- sorry.... his actual weapons of mass destruction. Not one shot fired, not one American soldier dead. And we didn't plunge America into debt.
They say it's the waiting that gets to you and Obama arguing with Congress to bring down the sword of Damocles on top of Assad's regime was just too much for the scumbag to take.
Three dimensional chess.
Meanwhile, back in Congress,Republicans are gearing up for a very important session in which three-you heard me-three post offices will be officially re-named.

I fully agree with you DoT, and in fact, removed the "NoSyria" sign from the front of my home, around 1900 today.
John & Barry's Most Excellent mis-adventure in Syria has ended before it really started. Thank God.
This also pretty much stops the civil war in some manner, I do not see Assad going anywhere. Sure, fighting will continue, at a low level, and perhaps will not end for the next decade or longer. But, with Russian troops on the ground, verifying and transshipping chem weapons--well at least that is what will be reported--there will be ample opportunity on the margins for extra-curricular activities.
In such an environment, Assad's security will be guaranteed.
At the end of the day, this is about the best result that could be hoped for. No bombing, no military engagement, no embarrassment for 44 from a down vote in Congress, no Constitutional crisis in the making, the opportunity for Congress to refocus on, oh,
BENGHAZI
IRS
NSA
F&F
etcetera
You know, I'd almost call it a miracle. Except for this being the most inept cabinet evah, one does pause to wonder if a Divine hand was not at work...? Afterall, Pope Francis did call for Catholics and all persons opposed to the 44 Regime's idiocy, to pray and fast last Saturday against a 'kinetic response.'
You be the judge of your own conscience.
But something wonderful happened, and I for one, am mighty glad it did.

"Let us all agree"...... so justoneminute is the political version of Dungeons and Dragons?
Let us all agree that GOP scandal mongering hasn't gone to plan because looking for evidence to support a pre-determined outcome is the basis of psychosis (a subject I'm slightly familiar with).
Just deal with the facts in an objective manner and you won't have our heart broken and/or be prescribed heavy doses of pharmaceuticals to help you cope with the reality you find yourself in (eg; Obama Presidency is successful, Conservatism is a failed ideology, there will be a third party pushing out all the right-wing radical elements).

UN Weapons inspection didn't work well in the 1990s against a hostile regime. How will it work against hostile regime fighting a civil war?
but they had nothing to bluff with.

I have no illusions that the actual inspections will work, narc--but is not about actions per se, just the semblance of such.
Posted by: Sandy Daze | September 09, 2013 at 10:58 PM
I'm somewhat confused (as usual). Assuming this is over, which I think may be premature, wasn't the unacceptable red line the use of chemical weapons, not their possession?
So even if we subscribe to the fiction
CastroAssad is giving anything up as the Russians pull theIRBMsSarin out, we're accepting and rubber stamping war crimes and he stays in power?Did Santayana write this script using the Cuban missile crisis as the template?

Maybe God really does look out for America. The Syrian crisis has done the nation the incredible favor of exposing a potential system failure early, like having a mild heart attack and finding that your arteries are nearly 99% blocked and only a miracle saved you from the Big One. But warnings only work when they are heeded. The administration and its supporters are heedless.
Maybe.

In primetime address Obama expected to announce indictments
2013-09-10 (While New England Slept A.M.) Washington, D.C. — President Obama will reveal the existence of still sealed indictments against leading member of the Syrian regime, including President Assad, in tonight's Oval Office address, senior White House and Justice Department officials have confirmed to The Fabulist.
The charges stem from terms of use violations on online purchases made through Apple Inc.'s iTunes store by Assad and members of his inner circle. The purchases, first revealed publicly by the Guardian and New York Times newspapers last year, date as far back as 2010.
Senior Justice Department officials, speaking on background to the Fabulist, allayed concerns that evidence had come from US intelligence operations and thus might be inadmissible at trial. "Throughout this investigation we were conscious that the President would be satisfied with nothing less than a case we could take to federal court," assured one official. "Evidence collection procedures in this case would have made Jamie Gorelick proud."
White House officials, meanwhile, were keen to underline that the victim was a major US corporation. "In this day and age, rogue regimes don't act in isolation. They harm everyone. We cannot permit assaults on the foundations of modern trade to the detriment of pioneering American companies and that's why it's important to send such a strong message to the world that wanton acts like this will not be tolerated."
Officials also bristled at the suggestions the charges were symbolic. "The Capone example has become a bit of a cliché," reflected one. "So for a more contemporary perspective I suggest you ask some of those Tea Party groups how symbolic they think it is to have the US government breathing down their necks."

Hello, friends. Just got back from a week's vacation in southeastern Sicily, beachhopping with my family. No internet, no emails, no politics, just the Ionian sea and the African sea, and food. LOTS of food. And wine cantinas where they will sell you two liters of delicious Nero D'Avola wine for four bucks. Impossible for me to catch up here, but it looks like Obama's second term is slowly deteriorating.
One odd thing I noticed about the small corner of the world I was in: very few bumper stickers.

What are the odds that any reporter asks Zero (or Kerry, or anyone in the administration) the question posed earlier in this threat re: the possession vs the actual use of chem weapons being the international "red line" that was crossed?
Something like:
"So, now that the Russians have agreed to take control of Syria's chemical weapons, you're no longer concerned about the 1,500 civilians including 400 children that you insisted that Bashar Assad killed with Sarin gas, an act that you've repeatedly told us her personally ordered? So that's all just water under the bridge now, and Assad can go back to business as usual with no consequences? So when you called it a war crime and a violation of international norms that simply couldn't be allowed to stand, that was just so much hot air? Can you clarify that for us, Mr. President?"

I thought the fact, they warming up his replacement was the reason, probably the stop payment;

The Patrick Howley piece is fantastic -- not subtle-- but fantastic.
JamesD-- I'm sure the WaPo WH repoter will ask Obummer that very question-- word for word.
BTW-- thanks to the Egyptian Military and Vlad Putin the MB and AQ have suffered huge setbacks in two large Arab Nations. The stage could be set to pressure the Mullahs and support secular Iraq. Oh.. I'm sorry... the POTUS sees the events in Egypt and Syria as defeats, so he'll make sure to help out the Mullahs.

cc @ 8:42 - I loved that link. But I kind of think they were much too easy on Cutter...

OT,but interesting.Joshua Chamberlain's original Medal of Honor has been donated to the historical museum in Brunswick that holds his collection. His last living descendant left her estate to the First Parish Church in Duxbury,MA. The anonymous donor found the medal in the back of a book bought at a church sale several years ago.Army experts have authenticated the medal.

So, lets see. The Russians put a couple of airborne brigades into Syria to secure Assad's chemical weapons. You can't move them to any type of destruction facility while the fighting is on going, so that gets postponed until the war is over. But, Assad gets to free up some more troops for the front line, and if chem attacks happen again, they "must" be the rebels, as "all" of Assad's stuff is accounted for. Sounds like we have really taught Assad a lesson there.

Joshua Chamberlain-- Bowdoin man, hero of Little Round Top. I didn't know he won a Cong MoH, I didn't think it existed then.

NK, he won two IIRC. Though the second one was awarded (erroneously) posthumously. Congress thought he had been killed in action leading an attack at Cold Harbor when they awarded him the medal for that action, but he was only seriously wounded.
