Few things more dangerous than a politically ambitious prosecutor.

NK(tryin' again)

Political Ambitious prosecutor is bad; a politically corrupt prosecutor such as the one at work in Texas 10 years ago is the danger.

Old Lurker test

What could be wrong about criminalizing political disagreement?

Threadkiller

Cspan has a new trick.

Dumb Broad (D) is getting Mullen to confirm that no stand down order was given the night of the Benghazi attacks. She then makes a gratuitous slam on Fruitcake (R) from Utah.

Cspan decides to leave a camera on Fruitcake just so we can see him sweat while Mullen answers Dumb Broad's question.

Jane

To quote MarkO: Doom!

NK(tryin' again)

I have seen no credible information that a 'standdown order' was given by the POTUS or JCS African Command, and I don't believe one was given to the US military. CIA security assets? they may have been stopped from getting to Benghazi, that's what Issa will determine. THAT issue was not in Mullen's jurisdiction to report on.

Porchlight

Posted this on the last thread. I always thought the DeLay prosecution was BS. They wanted DeLay removed from power because he was effective. They got what they wanted. I'm glad for him but it's so little, so late.

Ronnie Earle ought to be disbarred just like Nifong.

Frau Sommervoegli

DeLay had it coming; he was a killer. Even Ruth "Chuckles" Ginsberg saw fit to use her hatchet on the Hammer. /s
There's a special place in hay-ull reserved for Ronnie Earle.

henry

Plus Janet Reno and her carrer gets, the Amirault prosecutors, the guys that got Sen Stevens, Fitz, etc. There appears to be no penalty for egregious abuse by prosecutors... while forced colonization of Mars seems appropriate, the jail time they charged / achieved should be served by the tyrant prosecutors (or triple time as in civil torts).

4JIB2

Wonder if Delay will go back to the exterminating business?

OT: Today in 1796 George Washington published his Farewell Address which was damn prescient.

An exemple:

"Towards the preservation of your government, and the permanency of your present happy state, it is requisite, not only that you steadily discountenance irregular oppositions to its acknowledged authority, but also that you resist with care the spirit of innovation upon its principles, however specious the pretexts. One method of assault may be to effect, in the forms of the Constitution, alterations which will impair the energy of the system, and thus to undermine what cannot be directly overthrown. In all the changes to which you may be invited, remember that time and habit are at least as necessary to fix the true character of governments as of other human institutions; that experience is the surest standard by which to test the real tendency of the existing constitution of a country; that facility in changes, upon the credit of mere hypothesis and opinion, exposes to perpetual change, from the endless variety of hypothesis and opinion; and remember, especially, that for the efficient management of your common interests, in a country so extensive as ours, a government of as much vigor as is consistent with the perfect security of liberty is indispensable. Liberty itself will find in such a government, with powers properly distributed and adjusted, its surest guardian. It is, indeed, little else than a name, where the government is too feeble to withstand the enterprises of faction, to confine each member of the society within the limits prescribed by the laws, and to maintain all in the secure and tranquil enjoyment of the rights of person and property."

Then there is this:

"The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of public liberty.

Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight), the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.

It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which finds a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another."

As Insty says, read the whole thing.

Porchlight

Think of the enormous damage Congress has done since DeLay stepped down that he could have helped stop.

Ronnie Earle bears responsibility for ALL of that, the same as the Stevens prosecutors bear responsiblity for anything Stevens might have been able to help stop.

Extraneus

There's no sense whining about this. It's a shame we unfairly lost a great fighter, but Democrats play for keeps, and this is not a game to them; it's war. We're their most hated enemy, and no foreign enemy could come close. If they could, they'd exterminate us.

centralcal

Well, Delay is in DC today (according to Twitter reports) and having lunch with Texas congressional delegation.

Captain Hate on the iPhone

This won't stop until the GOP is willing to get those clean togas smudged and respond in kind.

Don't ever forget the Jim Wright angle either.
The Dems, being good mafiosi, don't stop until they've got a comparable scalp even if their guy really was a crook and ours was not.

Delay's persecution was the template for how they went after Stevens, one of the building blocks to their veto proof majority.

Bad day for purveyors of useless crap as that dipstick telemarketing huckster Kevin Trudeau goes to jail and Ty Warner the creator of the stupendously irritating Beany Babies pays $53 million in fines.

The only fun I ever derived from Beany Babies was when our daughter was just a squirt and we'd lay on our backs throwing the little creeps up into the ceiling fan blades.

In other news, the tax tribune Rangel failed to declare another quarter million in income,

Captain Hate on the iPhone

Exactly narc; those clowns play for keeps and don't dither around wondering if something is a smart fight or not. And it works.

MarkO

As Obama has shown in vivid detail, rules are for losers.

4JIB2

Watching the Benghazi hearing I am more convinced than ever that this is a huge coverup and I don't think Issa, even with subpoena power is going to get to the bottom of it. The ARB mission was so narrow that no one above a Deputy Assistant Secretary was even looked at for management culpability.

Finally, the GOP rep from Michigan, got the conversation turned toward risk assessment and management which goes to the indicators of extreme risk leading up to 9/11/12 and then sprung the question of who was captain of the ship then - Mr. Kiel had to admit the SoS. And who by name was the SoS on 9/11/12 - Mr. Kiel had to say the name - Hillary Clinton - while in the background you could see Sean Smith's mom perk up a little - small favor but maybe enough for one day.

This is all about saving Clinton and they found the perfect mush master in Pickering (a true partisan at State) and Mullen (known through-out his career as a brown nosing, risk adverse, yes man). But all the Dems could muster via Carolyn Maloney is how the GOP continues to perpetrate their war on women, this time that lovely lady from New York via Arkansas via Wellesly via Chicago - Mrs. Hillary Clinton, our beloved and completely blameless ex-SoS.

sbwaters

beloved and completely blameless ex-SoS

Help me with the acronym. Is ex-SoS ex-sack of . . .?

maryrose

Justice delayed{sorry for the pun} is justice denied. I knew at the time the charges were bogus against the honorable Tom DeLay. Pelosi and her ilk were behind the prosecution with Earle as her stooge. He should be disbarred as Porch has suggested. The Left never forgave DeLay for his role in winning the 2000 Florida electoral votes for President Bush. His call at the Miami-dade behind closed doors recount as "a Theft in Progress" forced them to stop manufacturing votes for Gore and led to young repubs demanding at the door for transparency. I remember Matthews at the time stating"this is the turning point in this recount debacle." The voted 2 to 1 to stop counting and the rest as they say is history. Daley {yes Bill} came out after to assure the progs that tghe recount in Palm Beach would continue but we all know they skipped counting on Thanksgiving and subsequently missed the deadline set by Katherine Harris. 8 years of President Bush can be attributed to DeLay's honest appraisal of misconduct in Florida.

maryrose

I've got at least 75 beanie babies in an upstairs bedroom for any interested buyers. One friend said he planned to sell some of the rarer ones on E-Bay to help pay for his daughter's college education.

maryrose

JIB:
With O'Malley going to New Hampshire and Scumer looking at NH and Iowa Hil's chances of getting the nomination grow dimmer. Benghazi will stick to her like fly paper and she willhave to account for her role in future committe hearings and when at long last a special prosecutor is named. Hopefully repubs will time it conveniently for 2014/2015 in the run-up to the 2016 election. I love thequopte from Gennifer Flowers. Who thiks Bill would have been much happier these past 20 years than with Hillary? Hil is just mean enough to have kept Chelsea from Bill in retaliation.

maryrose

Lots of spelling mistakes-Schumer,committee,quote,thinks,with Flowers,whew!

Porchlight

Great reminder, maryrose. It just steams me to think of what might have happened (and not happened) if we still had DeLay around.

NK(tryin' again)

The Dems are a gangster organization and seniority counts-- Hill will be the nominee, period. The only thing that could stop that is Obummer indicting the Clinton Foundation. I doubt Obummer has the guts for that, it would spark Dem civil war-- OFA against the Clinton Gang-- don't see that happening. Obummer is lazy and there's no hurry-- the Leftwing OFA types have already taken over the Calif Dems, are getting close in NYS and Daley dropping out in Ill may mean they are close to taking over there as well-- and the Clinton Dems ain't getting any younger. Chelsea? ha ha, nothing there, Andy Cuomo-- nah. I guess the Clintons see O'Malley as the next establishment Dem.

Marlene

OT,but it does involve a prosecutor. The Bangor Daily reports that the DA and police chief in Rockland will review a complaint filed by PETA that lobsters are being inhumanely treated at a processing plant owned by Linda Bean.(yes that Bean family) The DA is a veteran prosecutor and this the first time he's received an animal cruelty complaint involving lobsters. Maine's animal cruelty statue covers sentient animals. The lobstahs have feelings! Gawd.

Taranto has a good column up today on BoTW.

The Press and the IRS Scandal

Probably behind the paywall if not a subscriber, so here is a sample :

"The Washington Post is credited with exposing the Watergate conspiracy and helping to bring down a corrupt presidency. Forty years later, the Post played a role in the corruption of the Internal Revenue Service, to the benefit of an incumbent president in a bitter and close re-election.

A staff memo released earlier this week by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee provides an "interim update" on the investigation of the IRS scandal. A central finding: "Media attention caused the IRS to treat conservative-oriented tax-exempt applications differently" from liberal or progressive ones.

The memo presents no evidence that the White House directly ordered the IRS to crack down on political opponents. Instead, it is consistent with the theory, described here in May, that IRS personnel responded to "dog whistles" (in Peggy Noonan metaphor) in public statements from the president and his supporters.

In a passage we've annotated with links, the memo describes the media "drumbeat" in early 2010, when the IRS first began turning its attention to the Tea Party:

Washington Post columnists accused Tea Party groups of "smolder[ing] with anger" [Colbert King] and practicing a brand of patriotism reminiscent of the Ku Klux Klan [Courtland Milloy]. Another Post columnist opined in late March 2010 that Tea Party rhetoric "is calibrated not to inform but to incite" [Eugene Robinson]. In April 2010, Reuters tied the Tea Party movement to "America's season of rage and fear."

narciso

It doesn't matter if you're aggressive or soft spoken, they try the same games.

DrJ

Taranto is never behind a paywall.

4JIB2

Also, from Taranto's "Home Nods":

[Contrary to an assertion in yesterday's column, the policy that forbids most U.S. military servicemen from carrying firearms on base did not originate in the Clinton administration. Rather, according to TheBlaze.com, it was the Bush administration--the first one--in a February 1992 Defense Department directive.]

Another brilliant patrician move and point of light.

maryrose

Rangel received no punishment for his CRIME of not properly disclosing information on his tax returns. Being censured by Congress is nothing. Holder is still thriving. Of course Charlie thought he could get away with it again. Kick these parasites out of office!

maryrose

I want the House to vote against funding Bammycare. The fact that Harry Reid was out today whining about it only furthers my belief that taking a principled stand is the only way to victory. Rove at this point is irrelevant. He should go back to his strength-raising money for candidates. His architect days are over. Otherwise we would control the Senate.Repubs get blamed either way. Obama will pay for every veto he produces. Dem party is on the way down. If Hil is the best they can do, I say for them, DOOM!

I am trying to think about Republican strategies on Obamacare,,esp now that it appears the WH is working behind the scenes to add Big Labor to the list of exemptions. What about refusing to sign on to a CR that includes Obamacre unless every exemption is stripped from the law?

Clarice

Remember the republicans played says in this and Stevens, passing and enforcing a party rule that made its people resign their positions if they were indicted. Didn't they? Given this double farce, the rule ought to be scrapped. Call it the DeLay-Stevens amendment.

Porchlight

I didn't realize that was actually a party rule, Clarice. Thought it was just the way things were done (as opposed to criminal Dems who don't step down even if convicted). It's not a bad tradition as these things go, just that it makes the party more vulnerable to predatory prosecutors, of which there more on the left than the right.

Clarice

Exactly, porch. Yes, it was just a party rule IIRC.
(Meant SAPS not says..)

rse

Pagar,

The permissable religions to be highlighted either push a pantheistic view that fits with the contemplation focus or puts the emphasis on the collective, not the individual.

The state wants to dictate what compels moral judgments and morality. It cannot tolerate religions that are competitors in that sphere. This is actually graphically laid out in books and docs I have. Especially ones marked 'withdrawn.' But they are always consistent with what goes on now. Just not subtle.

Danube on iPad

"...don't dither around wondering if something is a smart fight or not"

And they don't pick fights that are stupid going in.

Captain Hate on the iPhone

narc has probably posted about this and maybe others have discussed it but Tammy Bruce talked about how Egypt was prosecuting some mooooslim brotherhood member who used to be employed by the Clintoon Foundation for the Production of Multicultural Porn and Pork Rinds. Since so much funding of the red nosed predator comes fr Saudi and other sketchy sources, nothing surprises me about those grifters.

Clarice

Capt--not only was this guy employed by the Clinton FOundation but he hel a high position in it. Andrew McCarthy at PJ Media has a nice tidy piece on the Clinton-Moslem Brotherhood connections. I think the donors list has not been revealed but I bet the Egyptians now have it.

Captain Hate on the iPhone

Really DoT? The donks pick stupid fights all the time that that DeMFM doesn't call them on. The Indonesian may have taken it too far with his attack on Repubs when they were still counting the bodies in the Navy Yard. Even some of his ardent defenders were disgusted by that. Likewise the commiecrats using Russ Feingold's funeral as a beat on Repubs orgy of bad taste.

Captain Hate on the iPhone

Thanks Clarice; I'll check it out.

Danube on iPad

"Any thoughts?"

My thoughts are that CR's and the debt ceiling are very clumsy and counterproductive intruments for seeking legislative concessions. The only leverage they give you depends on shutting down the government, which turns you into a loser.

These simpletons, if they get their way, are going to take all of the rapidly rising heat off Obamacare and redirect it to the GOP, when all they would have to do is let the thing implode on its own, which it is doing quite micely.

Extraneus

Anyone think a Dem as powerful as DeLay would resign because of some party rule? Or that they would encourage abiding by such a rule? Or that they would even have such a rule?

Jim Rhoads f/k/a vnjagvet

What has moved the political and educational elite to an avowedly pro-Muslim stance, rse? Is it rooted in an antipathy to the Judeo-Christian traditions extant as a major part of the origins of the Nation?

Pro-Muslimism eventually has to come to grips with one of that religion's major tenets, Shariaization(tm). This tenet is one of the least, if not the least, tolerant of the very social reforms (e.g. LGBT rights, LGBT marriage, women's rights, drug use) so trumpeted by the very same political and educational elite. It doesn't even try to reconcile those positions, and the MFM is yawningly uninterested.

Danube on iPad

It was Paul,Wellstone's funeral. Neither it nor Obama's tasteless remarks consituted picking fights; they were just stupid activities.

The GOP needs to face reality: it cannot defund Obamacare. It can do itself great harm in the attempt.

Captain Hate on the iPhone

Yeah it was Wellstone; I knew that was wrong when I typed it but couldn't figure out what was correct.

But you're wrong that they don't pick dumb fights. They openly rooted against the Surge. They compared the troops to Nazis. You don't think they were dumb fights because they paid no penalty yet you think ObamaCare will be repealed like the second coming of Prohibition once it's in place. I think once it's in place it will last as long as the federal income tax.

The Revolutionary war was fought with the support of one third of the colonists. Was that a dumb fight?

Janet

The Dems ignore passed laws all the time. They don't enforce abortion regulations or defend DOMA. They don't enforce our immigration laws.

Danube on iPad

"I think once it's in place it will last as long as the federal income tax."

And that's exactly what will happen unless the GOP wins both chambers and the WH in 2016. The chances of doing that will be diminished if there is a shutdown, and yet a shutdown will noy result in defunding. That seems to me to be weapons-grade stupid.

The revolution was not a dumb fight because we could win by killing them, but even so it would have been lost if France hadn't come to our aid. There will be no French intervention here.

Ignatz

I still have to say I lean somewhat toward DoT's analysis of picking the battle carefully, if only because it is the Stupid Party after all, but I must admit it is tempered by history.

As the Bush Tax cuts expiration approached and hardass Barry repeatedly warned he'd go down with the ship if necessary, he ended up extending all of them two years and got damn little in return.

And then in 2012 he balked again and in return for sequestration got a limit of $400k and $450K for making permanent Bush income tax rates and only mild increases on Cap gains and dividends.

Twice he's been to the brink and twice he has folded on what I believe were pretty unfavorable terms.

Is the third time a charm for Barry or is it the third time he's been dunked and he's staying under?
He would seem to be far weaker now than then.

Jim Rhoads f/k/a vnjagvet

OBOzo's past performances as described by Ig and his present walk from the Syrian Red Line should give his erstwhile Congressional allies some pause. If I were Harry, Schooomer, Pelosi or Hoyer I would be worried. If I were red state dems up for reelection in 2014, I would be shopping for Depends with special leak proof protection.

The way OBOzo plays poker, calling his bluff has much appeal.

pagar101

" It cannot tolerate religions that are competitors in that sphere. "

rse, IMO, the Obama regime is doing their best to eradicate the Christian religion and any mention of it in history.

Jane-Rebel Alliance1

If defunding is not possible, I think they should strip out all exemptions, making a big deal of the one that exempts Congress. If that isn't done, no deal.

Jane-Rebel Alliance1

We could certainly use a checkmate.

henry

I'm told by SpamMail that I need a Czech mate.

Captain Hate on the iPhone

So DoT's willing to throw all his cards in because we don't have the numbers. In those cards are a lot of aces and kings because this is a deeply unpopular issue for the donks' constituent groups. Also we're playing against a borderline retard who is in over his head playing slapjack. And every time he's opened his simple yap support for that monstrosity has gone down.

Remember the Reagan Democrats? They are out there ready to join up if the Repubs play their cards right.

Do you really think an organization headed up by a lightweight like Reince Priebus, who last seen was around fat boy Christie like remora fish around a whale shark at a Cowplops game, is capable of winning the Senate? And even if we did we'd still have to deal with turncoats like McCain and some Lugar in waiting to stab us in the back.

I am tired of losing without even putting up a fight. I've had to hold my nose and vote for well meaning doormats like Romney and McCain knowing full damn well they had no chance of winning. Enough of that. This is where to make a stand because this is the last chance.

Clarice

DoT, the trick is to put it into a posture where the R's say they'll vote for a CR even with funding for Obamacare BUT the exemptions have to go and no subsidies can be given out without identification and proof of income eligibility. Those are very defensible and popular objections.

Jane-Rebel Alliance1

I'm told by SpamMail that I need a Czech mate.
