A clean canvas. Shall we ruminate on the total lack of troll infestation in the last 48+ hours? My guess is the funding source is pissed at the betrayal, he thought Zero actually meant what he said as candidate for election and reelection. Sucker.

Seems weird to have a divisional race coexisting with a race for sudden-death wild card playoff advantage.

As a New Englander, let me be the first to say...how about those Red Sox!

Gmax

In other cheery news, Gallup so the flounderer to be down to 42% approval with Adults, and that I believe ties the lowest ever in Gallup. Somehow I doubt him overexposing himself on a very unpopular war is going to change that, for the good.

Gmax-I just wanted you to know I have been thinking of your family and son frequently. Such fine young people deserve a better CIC who bothers to ascertain relevant facts. In a timely manner.

Funny Bill in az brought up soros on the previous thread. He shows up in today's post as a pusher of this vision. According to the 2011 document so is bill clinton, quoting a speech he gave at davos just after he left office. So nice to know he is into ken wilber's integral crap.

Apparently there must have been something to the unlawful command influence charges as the Marines suddenly dropped the charges when it appeared likely the Commandant was going to be forced to testify and it would be revealed to the world he inserted himself into the prosecution. Zero spoke out on this and I will bet he was behind the unlawful command influence as much as you want to bet:

But the criminal case ended Friday when Lt. Gen. Kenneth J. Glueck, who heads Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico, Va., and was overseeing the prosecution, filed a brief court paper withdrawing the charges.

John Dowd, Capt. Clement’s principal defense counsel, had accused the commandant of engineering the largest case of unlawful command influence in the Corps‘ history.

“The withdrawal of the charges was another act of cowardice by the the commandant, his counsel and the the Judge Advocate Division of [Marine Corps headquarters] to cover up the worst case of unlawful command influence in the history of the Marine Corps, which was beginning next Wednesday to be uncovered in a hearing before the Chief Judge … on several motions to compel discovery,” Mr. Dowd said Saturday

DrJ

Well, sodium fluoride appears to be used in the reaction to make Sarin, but it is simply the fluorine analog of table salt. I'd be much more interested in the delivery of the organophosphate -- that would be much more dispositive.

Gmax

The case at hand, they were going after the Captain, who would be at least one officer away from direct supervision of the Marines who urinated on the Taliban corpses. I doubt seriously if he was even in the field and if he was, its is extremely likely that he was many clicks away when the grunts decided to provide a golden shower salute to the Taliban.

A taste: Obama's red line leadership marries incompetence and malice. The left's big idea of dismantling American power leaves it with few ways of using American power. Thank goodness someone brought up the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention to which Syria is *not* a signatory and that the present situation is not a war *between* nations. The WH fella today on FX kept acting as if the "over 100 year old" agreement" between warring nations applied here.

daddy

Good Morning!

On the Global Warming front, local rag is reporting that 2 Climate Scientists from Univ Alaska, Fairbanks have completed a big study proving that Global Warming is destroying the Arctic food chain, thus harming Polar Bears, plankton, women and children, etc.

Declining sea ice and warming temperatures are resulting in changes to vegetation in arctic coastal areas, according to research results published by two University of Alaska Fairbanks scientists in a recent edition of Science magazine.

Their study of 10 years of data on Arctic Coastal areas has shown them that sea ice loss is changing marine and terrestrial food chains. Sea ice loss means a loss of sea ice algae, the underpinning of the marine food web...

Fair enough, but that raises a couple questions. Anyone paying attention knows there has been no overall warming at all since 1997, so what, in the real world, have they actually been studying? Beats me. And then in the last paragraph of the story we get this from one of the Scientists:

Despite a general warming and greening of Arctic lands in North America, some areas in northern Russia and along the Bering Sea coast of Alaska are showing recent cooling trends and declines in vegetation productivity. "We don't know why," Bhatt said.

So there has been no rise in temp in 16 years, and the Arctic Coastal area they have been studying is actually getting colder, yet they conclude that Arctic Coastal Warming is destroying the food chain. That's a bit of a head scratcher.

It's funny what you find in those very last paragraphs sometimes, ain't it.

Well if it's warming, the tundra grasses will grow higher and longer, making for larger herds of caribou and reindeer and such.

In the seas, the plankton will grow for longer periods of time, making for more food for whales and fishies.

But the polar bears are getting more tired swimming from iceberg to iceberg, so that sucks. Of course the reindeer and caribou and elk and such may be getting stuck in the mud making them more easily eatable by wolves, polar bears and such.

It's all so confusing. This climate stuff is hard.

Via Instapundit today, an update on the OPM famine:

The Pension Crisis is Worse Than We Thought

http://blogs.the-american-interest.com/wrm/2013/09/07/the-pension-crisis-is-worse-than-we-thought/

The state-by-state breakdown looks even worse, with Illinois, Connecticut, Kentucky and Kansas holding plans that are less than 30 percent funded, and another 27 states below 40 percent.

It's a slow fuse bomb, but it will pack a devastating punch when it does go off.

DrJ,

"Goodies" work with Pelosi as Speaker. I don't believe Boehner will deliver any goodies for Dem votes. Can you imagine that bit of "the Dog ate my homework" being put out by a Repub Administration and the MSM not going berserk about it?

And as for when Kerry will produce that list of 34 countries, I think we'll see it about the time Kerry shows us his DD-214 Military Discharge papers.

Ranger,

If Mad Ben could begin the taper, it would bring interest rates back into line with reality, strengthening the pension fund ROIs while blowing up debt funded (mostly Blue) budgets. There's a little problem with the SSA beginning its draw down shortly. Even if the budget comes closer to balancing there will have to be steady issuance to replace retiring SS bonds. Toss in the IRA drawdown which is just beginning and the US may get to experience paying higher than market rates much sooner than anticipated.

I don't see it as better or worse, it's just a matter of sooner rather than later.

Good question.

I wonder if allowing Keystone might win over some of the members from the proposed pipeline states.

Up here I suppose if he promised to leave our Air Force Base in Fairbanks open, and to clear an Enviro hurdle or 2 for some proposed drilling, and to delay some Clean Air mandates clobbering Fairbanks and the light aviation industry, he might win our 2 holdouts. I don't think he'd have to do anything positive, simply eliminate the imposition of negatives, which would cost him nothing expenditure-wise except for some Eco-Leftist support, which he could always win back after the vote.

How about for the rest of you guys? Could he win your guys over just by removing intrusive, job strangling, Federal Government mandates, or would he have to actually offer something positive as bribes in your particular cases?

http://thehill.com/blogs/global-affairs/middle-east-north-africa/320813-benghazi-anniversary-haunting-obama-effort-to-win-support-for-syria-strike

But the story is still mostly misdirection. Not once does it mention the lies told after Benghazi to avoid calling it terrorism in a close presidential election. Not one mention of Rice going on 5 Sunday morning shows to spread the Youtube video lie.

This bit is very good though:

“Secretary Kerry, you spoke about how the use of this gas breached the norms of civilized behavior,” said Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.). “As I look at this, that same line of reasoning should have applied to Benghazi.

“The assassination of a diplomat breaches norms that were recognized probably far longer than norms against use of sarin gas. And yet the U.S. has not acted to avenge the death of the four Americans, including our ambassador, who were massacred in Benghazi.”

OT, but I finally got into our Yosemite property today.

The fire nibbled along the main road in for several miles and basically did a good job of cleaning things out but about four miles from the place it had gotten really hot and there was nothing left. Looked like a flea's eye view of a porcupine; just a bunch of black spikes.

Was like that up the drainage to our place until I was about a half mile away and it went back to nibbling.
Drove through the place and it was like a miracle; it looked better over most of the property. Opened it up, burnt the slash and the overgrown carpet of little trees and took almost no big ones. One hot spot of about fifteen acres.

As I kept driving all I could think was even if with perfect conditions I couldn't have done as good a job doing a controlled burn as this wildfire did.

Textbook case of thinning making a fire beneficial, even in a drought year in the middle of summer, while the areas that hadn't been thinned were nuked and will need total rehabilitation for decades. The thinned places will be back to normal in a year or two.
