So the Times Dispatch goes splunge, not choosing to endorse any candidate,

(A) nuther Bub

I am going to go back and cruise the parking lot and record how many Obama stickers I can find. Bet there are plenty.

Bet not. Walmart shoppers are unlikely to be broadcasting their politics, would be my guess, and not very interested in politics at all. Walmart bumper stickers here are more likely to be: "Don't like my driving? Call 1-800-Eat-Sh*t."

For Obama bumper stickers, try Whole Foods. The customers there are likely to be pierced and tattooed too, only they're skinnier, have better teeth and their cars are foreign made. Whole Foods is the only place in Hawaii where I've seen Hillary 2016 stickers.

Maryrose, I not only proudly shop at Wal-Mart's, I also am a big fan of dollar stores. Visited one last week and got nice gift bags and wrapping confetti.

maryrose,

Luv ya, but classism wasn't my motive. People who can't take care of themselves or who believe their body is an artists canvas represent the "give me" culture. If you believe that we need to rein in entitlements then these people will never vote to give up their free-bee's.

lyle

OT but germaine: Attended a function at out local university last Fri. honoring "Distinguished" Alumni. (Mrs. lyle is a past recipient and former university foundation president.) At cocktail hour, a woman sidles up to our table who knows the wife and I get an introduction. Immediately the woman starts bitching about Ted Cruz and informs us that her son, recently relocated from Seattle to north of Dallas, has not had much interaction with conservatives so she helpfully sugggested maybe the son could "put out a hit job on Cruz." "So this is this 'new civility' I hear so much about these days?," I respond. She seems a little baffled about being challenged so I follow up with, "What if I had said something about putting a hit job on Hillary? That would be beyond the pale, right?" She sputtered a mealy apology and departed.

If I attend next year--a lesser likelihood, methinks--I'm going to ask the next dean or advancement officer about their scholarship fund that they started and fund every year. The utter blank stare will be revealing.

Janet

I agree with Joan about the confusion. Medicaid was already there.
The underlying premise that there were millions of Americans not getting medical care was the BIG lie. They maybe didn't buy insurance, but they got medical care.
The Dems would trot out single moms with 4 kids..'awwww..we need some medical care!'

How'd she have those 4 kids!?
You can bet she got medical care.

Beasts of England

It's certainly cheap entertainment, JiB!

TC,

You live in a much different demographic in the NE. I'll bet your Walmart even has valet parking and concierge shopping assistance. Down here the shopping carts have Denver boots on them the greeter has to open for you so no one steals them for the parts.

I didn't even know how bad it was until I showed up on Monday for early voting last year. It was a long line and I spent time on the iPhone. Then I heard a guy I know who said "Hey, Jack. I don't think this is a line thats going to bring Mitt home". I then looked around and paid attention. Boy was he right.

I use to give a s**t about those who are struggling and I still do by giving food, clothing and toys to our local churches Outreach. But now I say, you voted Obama in then let him take care of you. Its that bad for me.

The polling showed that persuadable voters wanted to be rid of ObummerCare by a plurality, but supported defunding in materially smaller numbers. The clear inference was that a significant number persuadable voters thought that using a Gov't shutdown as leverage through defunding was 'cheap politics' and they didn't like it even though they wanted ObummerCare ultimately repealed. The further inference was that they were insisting that Conservatives win elections and then repeal. Persuadables think differently than us, because we are strongly convinced. They have to be convinced that we are right.

Hey Tom, got a minor problem here:

Their "Gold" offering in Connecticut will cost (unsubsidized) roughly $1,9000 for similar deductibles and co-pays. That would have been a bit of a blow.

Would that be $1,900 / month (extra 0)? $19,000 / year? Or $19,000 / month? :-)

Porch-- the defund distraction took the attention off ObumerCare and the debt for 3 weeks. Fortunately ObummerCare implementation is a complete disaster and even the Legacy Media are calling Obummer on the lies he's telling about it. IMO, the opportunity cost of the defund distraction was marginal and small-- but still a cost (Cruz probably raised a shite load of money for his PAC though);

Nominating Cruz-- I bet Cruz isn't interested in th '16 nomination -- I think he's trying to build a Conservative Party-- he's a movement guy, rather than a typical politician IMO. TBD.

Threadkiller

"But who cares, among those here who have no interest in helping the GOP, or who have left it altogether?"

NK(tryin'2.0)

Delay ObummerCare? what does that mean? AllahPundit gets the facts right but I believe comes to the wrong conclusion. IMO, right after Thanksgiving, Obummer signs an Executive Order granting a 1 year waiver of the Individual mandate-- which measn the healthy Immortals don't have to buy Exchange Insurance or pay the tax. Obummer doesn't want to tax the Immortals or any moderate income person before '14 elections. OK, then what?, the rest of Obummercare stays in place... the MediCaid expansion, the subsidies, the MediCare taxes on the RICH, all stays in place. All give aways remain, but no pain for the persuadables. Then what?-- well the Private insurers in the Exchanges increase rates for prior insurereds or fold or both. That's fine with Obummer, next step to Singlepayer. http://hotair.com/archives/2013/10/21/uh-oh-carney-dodges-question-on-whether-individual-mandate-might-need-to-be-delayed/

MarkO

"Of course, there are other options not mentioned..."

What fun would that be?

Beasts of England

The optics for JEF unilaterally delaying the individual mandate would be untenable. I can't see the First Narcissist even considering such a thing. I'd love it, of course, but the Emperor's bubble is impervious to reason or latitude.

Porchlight:

Tell me again how Repubs are hurting sooo bad after trying and failing to defund the monstrosity.

Sometimes, by picking the right fight, you do get lucky, even when you lose. Without the fight, I wonder if the Repubs would have managed to muddle the issue with Obamacare. If there is one no doubt item right now, it's tht the GOP opposes Obamacare.

Of course, had the GOP gone to the mat over delaying, rather thsn defunding, they'd be in an even better position. But I will Cruz credit over picking the right fight, even if the tactics are causing a lot of self-inflicted wounds.

The funny thing about Obamacare -- every LIV who does not have insurance will have to experience the crappy website. Which means not even the media can spin it away, which I think is much of the reason they are not trying to do so.

NK(tryin'2.0)

BOE-- I don't disagree about the First Narcissist, but think about it. What doesn't he want?-- a Repub Senate. Imposing taxes on Immortals risks that, so he'll be forced to delay the mandate, just like he delayed the employer mandate to reduce job cuts before the '14 elections.

Extraneus

But who cares, among those here who have no interest in helping the GOP, or who have left it altogether?

I'm all for helping the GOP.

What I'd like to see is a sub-party formed within the Republican Party. The name "Tea Party Caucus" suggests itself, but maybe there's a better one. (The "Constitutional Caucus"?) I don't contribute to the GOP, but I'd contribute to such a Caucus if they agreed to run candidates in all Republican primaries and, win or lose, commit to supporting the Republican nominees.

Of course the standard GOP candidate could win the endorsement of the Caucus and avoid a primary, but that would obviously involve a degree of ideological alignment.

I think this would help the Republican Party, and lead to a level of unity that's currently hard to imagine occurring otherwise.

This is not unprecedented, btw. There's a Right to Life Party, a Green Party, a Conservative Party and there have been others such as the Reform Party. These parties sometimes ran their own candidates, but often endorsed the major party candidates instead.

I'm not calling for a real third party, but a sub-party - a pseudo-party, within the Republican Party. Not something that would run candidates against the Republicans in any general elections.

They should have a logo, though.

I agree with you about how the website hits everyone, which is why the MSM can't ignore it.

I also agree with Kaus the other day that the MSM feels like this is "their" story because the GOP didn't "force" them to cover it by holding hearings (or at least they didn't hold hearings at first). So as lame as it is, MSM feels they "own" the story and are bird dogging it much more than they normally would because of that.

Lifelong Vikings fan here. I was at the NFC Championship in 2001 watching the Vikes lose to the Jints 40-0. We left at the half and gave our tix to the Jints-fan jerks behind us (who had abused us the whole time), so that they could bring their friends elsewhere in the stadium down to better seats. They looked at us like we were from Mars, but I think they felt pretty guilty. For a minute.

Anyway the Vikes are like the GOP - never underestimate their ability to find a way to lose. I hope I'm wrong.

Miss Marple

Question: How is the ACA able to promote black people seeing black doctors, Hispanics seeing Hispanic doctors, etc?

I have seen this provision detailed in a couple of places today, and it seems to me this is SEGREGATION.

And what if a black patient wants the best neurosurgeon, who happens to be white? Or vice versa, if Ben Carson was still practicing?

Beasts of England

Miss Marple@8:43 - It seems like only yesterday that a few of us were being called out for calling out JEF as a racist. It is his essence, and I hope that more people will soon see the light and react accordingly.

boatbuilder

For essentially all of my adult life I have believed that the only way to fight the liberal menace has been to elect and support Republicans, even those I felt were less than stalwart for the conservative cause. I no longer feel that way. I hope to hell that I am wrong, but I have very little expectation that when and if the predicted Republican takeover happens they will do much more than tinker around with it, with the same group who have been savaging Cruz and the Tea Party joining with their "moderate" democrat brethren and the msm to resist the "radicalism" of those newly elected and naive candidates who gain them a majority. Sure it will be better than the status quo, but I'm not buying the GOP brand with any great enthusiasm or expectation. And that, DoT and NK, is the big problem for the party. They lack credibility.

DrJ

How is the ACA able to promote black people seeing black doctors, Hispanics seeing Hispanic doctors, etc?

I've taken this line of reasoning to heart. It seems it is of critical importance to see a Doctor who shares your gender, race, language and culture. So I see a white male former Air Force Doc.

You know what? They may be right!

ACA segregation policy:

http://dailycaller.com/2013/10/20/obamacare-seeks-to-segregate-patients-doctors-by-race/

Sandy Daze

Fine. I've got no problem with seeing a doctor of your own race or gender; years of military docs have prepared me for whoever I might see on the other side of the door.

I'm good with this, as long as the gov doesn't start requiring that the patient see a particular doc because s/he is the proper gender/race analogue.

But, how do we square the circle of this with the attempt to create a color-blind society? doesn't this effort contradict the decades of social engineering we've been subjected to?

IOW, if true in medicine, then shouldn't this also be true in the classroom, i.e. being taught by someone of my own race puts me more at ease than being taught by someone of another race? Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this the doctor argument? why the prejudice in medicine and not in education???

Threadkiller

"But, how do we square she circle of this with the attempt to create a color-blind society? "

We don't have to. The circle will fall under its own weight until it looks like a square.

The GOP will then run a persuadable square in 2016.
