Why does Obama's speaking have the same (or less) sophistication as my blog comments?

Guess I'm as worldly and sophisticated as him.

We’re relying on old stuff. I don’t think we should have this old stuff;

Just because the Obamacare Exchange uses 20+ year old technology doesn't mean we need 100 year old a shiny new streetcar / light rail / trolley / monorail in every town.

New stuff? What about getting some 'New Things'? Stuff is just stuff, but things have a ring to them. :)

rse,
Just pointing out all the new "stuff" Barry is always yapping about is grounded in a very bad, very dead philosopher's distillation of "stuff" God had to hand down the tablets to counteract several thousand years ago.

I doubt that his poll numbers will rise during the remainder of his term

He was willing to dismantle the finest health care in the world, all to benefit a small minority, half of whom didn't, and still don't, want that benefit. And he has been incapable of speaking truthfully about it right from the start.

Rich,

Keep your eye on the state approved intergenerational subsidy aspect of BOzocare. Don't you dare start looking at gender premium parity and comparing it to gender splits in total health care costs. That would be double doubleplusungood, so just shut up, fork it over and keep resenting grandpa.

I had figured that the employer mandate was going to sock us this year and was planning for it, but with the disaster of the individual roll out, I'm thinking the employer mandate is going to get pushed off until Obama is out of office. Not sure though, but it is nice to have plan b in the back pocket-think a lot of people in group plans at work will really be blindsided if and when the employer mandate kicks in.

Henry,

You know, the greater Los Angeles area had a very good light rail system many years ago. There were the regular street cars (yellow and green lines) and the red cars that went all the way from the San Gabriel foothills to Venice Beach. What did L.A. do? They tore them all up and paved over the tracks, then sold the right of ways.

Years later, they put in the Blue Line at an astronomical cost in an attempt to recreate what they demolished in the 1960s or thereabouts. Now, Governor Moonbeam wants a high speed rail line for California.

I guess it just depends on whose pockets are getting lined at the time.

Jane,

I don't know what happened that day, but I have severe reservations about the Warren Commission and the accepted version.

I think I've told this story before, but I was fully secure that it was only Oswald after I stood in the window there about 20 years ago. Then, a last summer, my friend, Brian Doyle-Murray (Bill's brother and the writer of "Caddyshack") told me that when he was cast in the role of Jack Ruby for "JFK" he learned that a front shot, not from the knoll but from the sewers, was easy and undiscoverable. He said after the shot, someone could merely walk out unseen. He told me he was certain it was the mob because of the Ruby connection.

Anyway, I don't know much more about it than anyone, but I realize there are facts that could lead to a different conclusion and that the loose ends will always give us a chance to argue about it. What could be better?

I've never known enough about it to have an opinion - when it happened, I believed what Walter Cronkite told me. I also hate conspiracy theories in general - but I am fascinated by the mob motive to get Robert Kennedy out of a job, and a few other things. Smarter people will have to convince me. It sure is an interesting anniversary - if only because it reminds me how old I am, and how young I was.

Cats and cars are a bad combination. I had a cat when I was in high school that liked to sleep under the hood and mom cranked the car one day and backed out of the driveway and the cat got caught in the fan belt and ran off. Came back in the middle of the night and my parents had to take him to the emergency vet as he had a laceration on his chest and you could see all the way into his diaphragm. He recovered (I had to feed him finely ground meat paste by the fingerful as he also bit the fan belt and lost several teeth). That was one expensive vet Bill.

He's got a crisp creased pants too folks!

Windansea,

Apologies for having to correct you on this, but since TM's post is on proper jargon, I must.

David Brooks, the effete New York intellectual snob, did not say creased "pants", because he needed to separate himself from us Hoi Polloi and maintain his sophisticated aloofness over us yokels. He used the word "pant."

Here is the proper phrasing from David Brooks:

“I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging,” Brooks recently told me, “but usually when I talk to senators, while they may know a policy area better than me, they generally don’t know political philosophy better than me. I got the sense he knew both better than me.”

That first encounter is still vivid in Brooks’s mind. “I remember distinctly an image of–we were sitting on his couches, and I was looking at his pant leg and his perfectly creased pant,” Brooks says, “and I’m thinking, a) he’s going to be president and b) he’ll be a very good president.” In the fall of 2006, two days after Obama’s The Audacity of Hope hit bookstores, Brooks published a glowing Times column. The headline was “Run, Barack, Run.”…

So Windansea, and any other JOMer's who may have been "myzled" about this, "pants is not the operative word here, it's "pant", as in "Hi, I'm David Brooks. I do want to sound like I'm bragging, so I just took a shit in my pant."

Another grand opportunistic moborator:

Mussolini denounced the PSI (Italian Socialist Party), and later founded the fascist movement. Following the March on Rome in October 1922 he became the youngest Prime Minister in Italian history. After destroying all political opposition through his secret police and outlawing labor strikes, Mussolini and his fascist followers consolidated their power through a series of laws that transformed the nation into a one-party dictatorship. Within five years he had established dictatorial authority by both legal and extraordinary means, aspiring to create a totalitarian state.
