Cross post:

DC looks like a little global warming has shown up:)

So far, good competitve game for two C+ or B- teams.

62F, blustery, overcast, some sqaulls from time to time on the First Coast of Florida.

Advanced warning to naricso and South Florida: Tomorrow our friends who are respositioning their boat to Key Largo are driving down and bringing Frederick to his friend in Key Biscayne. He will be there 5 days. Hide your pre-teen daughters and key lime pie:)

Apparently, the judge says that the NSA system "works" and it "only" works because the NSA gathers everything.

Just how would the Judge know that?

Re: The Russian ship trapped in ice in Antarctic ice this South Pole summer.

Has anyone seen or heard any mention of Global Warming in the news reports about that icebound ship? I haven't, but obviously I haven't heard them all. This recent one for instance, from the Chicago Trib, completely neglects any mention of the weather: Help on horizon for 74 on icebound Russian ship off Antarctica

It follows right on the heels of Prince Harry canceling his trek across Antarctica 2 weeks back: A race to the South Pole featuring Prince Harry has been abandoned due to harsh conditions.

daddy

If you scroll down a bit at the Watts Up With That? home page, you'll find an update on the icebound Russian Ship, organized by an Aussie "Climate Scientist", but in scrolling down you'll pass by a story talking about freakish cold temps in interior Alaska.

Yesterday local news said that Circle, Alaska was -58 F.

And once again Fairbanks is in trouble with the Fed's for burning wood in their stoves. Current Fairbanks temp---minus 38F

JIB

daddy,

Its only 5F going down to -14F tonight at my old billet at Thule AFB. When has the temps at both poles ever equalized. But I am sure some of the IPCC scientists (like the guy from Bangladesh with a degree in barber science) will have an answer. But it will depend on how much you can bargain the amount of money he will accept to say what you want him to say.

The source for TK's 3:48 is - wait for it - the website of one Orly Taitz, Esq. Although Ms. Taitz does not say why or how there is any wrongdoing with the event she describes, she does appear to suggest that Judge David Carter improperly took flights to Afghanistan that were funded by the Executive Branch.

A bit about Judge Carter (USMC 1st. Lt. Vietnam 1967; Bronze Star, Purple Heart):

"As part of his extensive work in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Judge Carter is a co-founder of a Public-Private Partnership for Justice Reform that is dedicated to improving human rights, and in particular women’s rights, along the Afghan-Pakistan border. One of the flagship programs of the PPP brings female lawyers and law students from Afghanistan to study at United States law school LLM programs."

OK y'all. One more chance. We only had three of us for all the bowl games, so I am tracking those, but let's see if we can get something going for the BCS games and maybe a few others.

Picks for the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange and Championship games....

Rose - Michigan State v Stanford
Fiesta - UCF v Baylor
Sugar - Oklahoma v Alabama
Orange - Ohio State v Clemson
Championship - FSU v Auburn

Picks for 'a few others'...

Music City - Ga Teck v Ole Miss
Chick fil a - Duke v Texas A&M
Gator - Georgia v Nebraska
Outback - LSU v Iowa
Capital One - Wisconsin v SCarolina
Cotton - Missouri v Okla State

Your choice - pick winners in the BCS games or pick winners in the BCS and 'a few others.'

Let's get something going so that we have some fun going on New Years Eve and New Years.... you know you're gonna be watching.

Get some skin in the game!

If you want another game added, no problemo, I just took the 'traditional' oldies and some that are of interest to those here to make the 'a few others' list.

The Marines Corps quietly puts off the requirement that female Marines perform 3 pullups.

Ext's link from the previous thread reminds me of all those Military Radio ads I hear on the headsets every day during the dog walk. You may recall them; a group of different voices each saying the line, "I'll never forget that day, I'll never forget that day, I'll never forget that day", then launching into some reenactment of some exercise of rescuing somebody as a member of the Guard etc, with intermitant yells from the Drill Instructor and their in unison response "Sir, Yes Sir", and finishing again with "I'll never forget that day".

I'm ready for the updated version:

Fred: "I'll never forget that day"
Jamal: "I'll never forget that day"
Betty: "I'll never forget that day"

Fred: "The Drill Instructor called us to formation"
(sounds of DI hollering and commotion)
Jamal: "He told us this was the day when we had to prove ourselves"
(more sounds of DI hollering and commotion)
Betty: "But then he told us girls we didn't have to do 3 pullups anymore, so we could just quit trying and still graduate with the boys"

(In unison) "Sir, Yes Sir!"

Fred: "I'll never forget that day"
Jamal: "I'll never forget that day"
Betty: "I'll never forget that day."

Patriotic music, followed by a 1-800 number.

It'd probably work better over the radio.

Stephanie looking forward to the bowl games

Remember the old presidents physical fitness requirements in elementary school? Girls had to do FIVE pull ups for 100% and even the nerds could do 2 or 3.

What is this military coming to when a 10 yo girl can do better than an 18-20 yo?

Stephanie looking forward to the BCS games

JIB

daddy,

The fact that the ladies got 48% was more impressive to me than the guys getting 99%. I think everyone is missing the most significant point here. Nearly half the women recruits can do 3 pull ups. Now, I know they are problem of less weight but the pullup is a demonstration of pure upper body strength which you never assume for women.

I still say in a hand-to-hand door by door combat clearing situation it would be tough duty for the ladies but its getting closer to reality. Ask the IDF how they feel about that:)

Noted this little nugget in a CNN poll with a very large lead for Republicans over Democrats at the moment:

“A year before the 2010 midterms, for example, the Democrats held a 6-point lead on the generic ballot but the GOP wound up regaining control of the House in that election cycle, thanks to an historic 63-seat pickup,” he added.

[T]he 2014 midterm elections are shaping up to be a low-turnout event, with only three in 10 registered voters extremely or very enthusiastic about voting next year. …

Democratic voters seem particularly unenthusiastic about voting, and that is likely to benefit the GOP. Thirty-six percent of Republicans say they’re extremely or very enthusiastic about voting. That number drops to 22% among Democrats.

Very large @ss whippin in the making. It will be delicious to watch.

Kubrick's Gunny Hartmann (R. Lee Ermey) was a former USMC DI. I once read an article where one of the producers (I think) talked about how R. Lee would regale them with sea stories, always of course laced with profanities and obscenities. They decided he was such a natural that for the scenes where he was interacting with the Boots, they would just tell him what was supposed to happen in the scene and let him come up with his own dialogue. He didn't disappoint.

I just saw an ad on ESPN saying that my Tarheels get to play in a Football Bowl game this year. Seriously, are they kidding me?

We stink, we're 6 and 6, and we frickin' lost to Dook at home.

Plus we cheated like dogs to get half our players eligible by giving them non-existant Afro American history courses.

We're playing Cincinnati in something called the Belk's Bowl. (Should have spelled it "Bilks" if you ask me.)

So, anyone know what Cincy did to deserve getting stuck in this Bowl Game with us? Robbery by the wide receivers?; Rape charges 'gainst the Defensive secondary?; grand theft auto by the Quarterback? Or maybe their History Dept didn't use Howard Zinn's text in their curriculum?

Whatever, it's a mystery to me.

BTW, Have Captain Hate's Terps lost yet?

Force-fed Duck and his liver fat

As a global media content company, A+E Networks' core values are centered around creativity, inclusion and mutual respect. We believe it is a privilege for our brands to be invited into people’s home and we operate with a strong sense of integrity and deep commitment to these principals.

That is why we reacted so quickly and strongly to a recent interview with Phil Robertson. While Phil’s comments made in the interview reflect his personal views based on his own beliefs, and his own personal journey, he and his family have publicly stated they regret the “coarse language” he used and the mis-interpretation of his core beliefs based only on the article. He also made it clear he would “never incite or encourage hate.” We at A+E Networks expressed our disappointment with his statements in the article, and reiterate that they are not views we hold.

But Duck Dynasty is not a show about one man's views. It resonates with a large audience because it is a show about family… a family that America has come to love. As you might have seen in many episodes, they come together to reflect and pray for unity, tolerance and forgiveness. These are three values that we at A+E Networks also feel strongly about.

So after discussions with the Robertson family, as well as consulting with numerous advocacy groups, A&E has decided to resume filming Duck Dynasty later this spring with the entire Robertson family.

We will also use this moment to launch a national public service campaign (PSA) promoting unity, tolerance and acceptance among all people, a message that supports our core values as a company, and the values found in Duck Dynasty. These PSAs will air across our entire portfolio.

In addition, an A&E source says the family and the network are going to work together to promote tolerance moving forward.
Robertson's comments in GQ magazine, which included the 67-year-old likening homosexuality to "bestiality," prompted an almost immediate announcement from A&E.=======

IOW, we've seen the Beast, and it is US.

Stephanie looking forward to the BCS games

We can add the tarholes game. I didn't include it cause I figured you had enough public humiliation football wise already. ;)

Stephanie: --Remember the old presidents physical fitness requirements in elementary school? Girls had to do FIVE pull ups for 100% --

I remember girls had to do the flexed arm hang for some number of seconds - 30? 45? I forget - I could do it forever and they made me stop after a full minute.

I do remember in gym we were encouraged to do chin ups (knuckles away) vs. pull ups (knuckles facing) because they are easier. I also remember being told the reason for the difference was something to do with center of gravity, but that was (almost certainly) hogwash.

JIB

A&E smell of complete desperation but then if you are a liberal then that is your usual smell with a touch of feather.

TexasIsHeaven

I hope everyone had a blessed and Merry Christmas.

I am in mourning for the Texans. We do have some great players on defense, how could JJ Watt be better? We have a couple of great WR - but something is missing. Maybe the draft will help us. We have the best defensive coach in the league with Wade Phillips. I guess we just need a head coach now.

Maybe Santa has one for us...

Happy New Year to everyone.

Wonder if Jesse jackson is going to be able to extort anything out of A&E or Cracker Barrel? He must be running low on money.

I'm beginning to feel mid term elections will be a source of happiness for us this year. I'm looking forward to enjoining the battle again - feeling more optimistic than I have in a while.

Stephanie/AliceH-- i do believe the 1960s Fitness test included Chin Ups not Pull Ups. I could do 20+ chinups, but I don't believe I could EVAH do double digit pullups. Always harder for my low center of gravity.

Henry; your politics belong in Amana Country. Outside that influence, you fade fast.

Stephanie looking forward to the BCS games

I remember the flex arm hang, too.

We did both and like you I could hang there forever. Of course, I was in ballet and doing gymnastics including bars so I kinda had an edge.

Warm ups for ballet and gymnastics would probably make football players cry. It's not the weight training but core fitness and flexibility that would kill them.

I'd pit Barishnikov in his prime over any football, baseball, soccer player for sheer strength in action.

Ed Morrissey:

"A proper reform of the health-insurance sector would eliminate (or at least greatly reduce) the footprint of third-party payers in most routine care, as well as transform health insurance into what it should be — a protection against catastrophe, not a club for medical care. That would introduce price transparency to the consumer, relieve most providers of a ridiculous amount of overhead, and reduce premiums to a realistic level for catastrophic coverage."

So you'd pit Barishnikov against, say, Bo Jackson, or lets take some one from today, Calvin Johnson or even Larry Fitzgerald, Adrian Peterson or Clay Mathews? Really? Have you ever been inside a NFL fitness facility to see what these guys do for half a day?

I am really LOL and they aren't even as fit as the NBA guys. Ballet may be athletic but it is not complete strength and stamina fitness like a professional athlete must maintain. Hate to disagree with you but I will. I'd put every wide receiver, tight end, running back and defensive back up against old Baryishnakov any day.

We haven't even discussed Olympic level swimmers, biatholan skiiers and freestyle wrestlers.

Unity, Tolerance and Acceptance were compromise words and the gays lost big. Accepting that there are gays is a far cry from approving or supporting.

I can accept that there are things I cannot change (that prayer comes to mind about acceptance and wisdom).

AliceH

Ooh, my. I'm going to have to go with Stephanie on this one. Baryshnikov for the athletic win. There's a reason some football players have been known to add ballet to their workouts.

Ignatz

Anderson Cooper and Andy Sullivan yucking it up about cunninlingus;
I guess it wasn't one of those "you had to be there" jokes.

Extraneus

I don't see anything wrong with using the word anus when talking about gay rights.

JIB

Please, both of you. The reason football players add ballet to their routines is to keep both feet inbounds on those quick down and out passes. No other reason. Give it a break. There is no ballet dancer in the world who can hold a professional football players strength and overall fitness including stamina, at least for the running backs, receivers and defensive back.

So, you think Michael Phelhps, for example, needs some advice from Barishnykov on fitness and stamina? Maybe athletic grace but nothing else. Ballet is an art not athletics for a reason.

Fois Gras

"I guess it wasn't one of those "you had to be there" jokes."

First, you need a genuine sense of humor, which you ain't got.

2nd; is cunnilingus in your lexicon of experience?

Stephanie looking forward to the BCS games

Yep I'd pit em against each other. When Bo tried ballet (and he did) he said it was the worse hurt he ever had from a workout. Try standing on one leg, other leg elevated, toes pointed and dead lifting a ballerina over your head while turning in a circle gracefully. And then slowly lower the ballerina changing positions while lowering her.

Sheer weightlifting goes to the footballers - pure core control the dancer.

Stephanie looking forward to the BCS games

Oh and do that AFTER dancing, turning and jumping around for 2 1/2 minutes. Those footballers would be looking for their oxygen tanks they keep on the sidelines after their exhausting 15 second runs.

henry

AliceH, flexibility and balance are a big part of the reason football players add ballet... I agree that ballet dancers are very fit & swimmers have incredible cardio fitness, contact sports are something else entirely. It is one thing to run 10-15 miles at varied paces, and something else entirely to do so pushing against a competitor occasionally getting clobbered. I ran distance & swan competitively but that was just a baseline for soccer.

JIB

Okay, forget football players lets just use professional test Rugby players. You say 21/2 minutes? How about 40 minutes of non-stop running at full speed and moving the pile?

Next thing I will be hearing is how figure skaters are such physical specimens compared to NFL players.

JIB

NFL = NHL players - Skaters versus Skaters. Take your pick. I know its ladies against gents.

AliceH

Somehow, JIB, I don't think you are open to argument on the subject. ;)

JIB

I am open to argument. I have given you my case. You can make yours.

I understand that ballet dancers, figure skaters, hell, even badminton players have athletic abitlities and use their physical attributes for perfecting their craft, there is no comparison to professional sports athletes, be they football players, basketball players, hockey players or even baseball players, If there was then every ballet dancer and figure skater would be invited to try out for those teams. But they aren't and that is where the money is - more than they are making dancing Giselle or Ice Capades.

Stephanie

And Henry, I'd pit Ronaldo against an American footballer for stamina, too. 80+ minutes with no break. Yep, they are fit.

I was talking about core strength and control. Totally different from 'dead weight' training and 'long distance' training.

Although, like I noted above, try running an 1/4 mile then stopping dead and doing yoga with a partner as the weights. Closest analogy I can get to what a dancer does.

Totally different than a female dancer I'll note, also. We were upper arm wimps.

JIB

AliceH,

I am open to any argument on the subjet. I have made my point and you are more than welcome to make your's for any rebuttal I may add.

But if these ballet dancers are such great athletes that can compete with professional fottball playes or even test rugby players or NHL skaters then come and try out for those team. They make a hellva lot more than dancing Giselle or skating in Ice Capades.

boris

Don't think there is much comparison between any contact sport like football or boxing or fencing and any kind of performance art. There is a whole different level of intensity.

JIB
