NPR on the Duck Dynasty debacle. The minstrel got uppity:
A&E, here, is dealing with one of the fundamentals of reality shows that aren't at the documentary end of the spectrum but are at the comedy end of the spectrum. On the one hand, it loves to sell the Robertsons as real, genuine, cinema beardite stars who simply can't stop keeee-razy things from coming out of their mouths. On the other, it would like to be in the position of a sitcom in saying, "Hey, we are as appalled by this actor as you are, but it doesn't have to have anything to do with the show, right?" (That, though, will offend an entirely different group of folks who would really rather see Real Phil and certainly think there's no reason to find him appalling.)
Camille Paglia has more.
IN A BEAUTIFUL WORLD... Now that there is an opening on Duck Dynasty I see a role for PajamaBoy. Why can't we all just get along?

A White House review panel report into the activities of the NSA suggested that the government was using the spy agency to launch cyber attacks against financial institutions and change the amounts held in bank accounts.

The 300 page report prepared for President Barack Obama by the Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technology called for the NSA to be stripped of its power to obtain bulk collections of telephone records.
Page 221 of the panel’s report states;
(1) Governments should not use surveillance to steal industry secrets to advantage their domestic industry;
(2) Governments should not use their offensive cyber capabilities to change the amounts held in financial accounts or otherwise manipulate the financial systems.
Trevor Timm from the Electronic Frontier Foundation responded to the report by suggesting that the NSA was targeting major financial institutions."

Paglia nails it. It's every bit as intolerant of the gay activists to condemn Robertson's statements as it is of him to condemn homosexual behavior. And if the stats are to be believed, there're quite a few more devout Christians in the US than LGBT types, so . . .
Besides, the message is borderline incoherent. Here's the Advocate's man of the year, the most enlightened Pope ever:
But wait, there's more: I'm trying to parse the difference between what the Pope "considers a sin" and "who am I to judge" to Phil's "start with homosexuality" and "we never ever judge" . . . and I see precious little daylight . . . Francis is just a lot more polished with the delivery. So which is it? Man of the year material? Or hate speech?

"House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan admitted on Wednesday evening that cutting the pensions of disabled and injured U.S. military veterans as part of the deal he forged with Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) was a mistake.
Apparently, Ryan knew the mistake was in the legislation for at least two full days before the House vote. He has not, however, provided any explanation for why he did nothing to fix it."

TC,
The Bloomberg piece accepts without question the government guess of 500K previously insured who are now uninsured. That's pure propaganda derived from slapping a 90% reinsurance rate to those whose policy has been cancelled.
Why wouldn't someone with a canceled plan take advantage of the 90 day risk free window and skip the first three months of BOzocare, even if they intend to buy a policy? It's a 25% no pain discount.
We won't know for a few months but I would wager the number deciding to not purchase to be closer to 2 million than to 500k. We'll see when the 10Ks and 10 Qs are filed.

The law requires Reid to sign up for an Obamacare plan starting Jan 1. Is this a plan on the Nevada exchange or the DC exchange? Reid is a resident of Nevada, after all. Does that mean that Reid has no insurance coverage for doctors/hospitals outside of his home county in Nevada starting Jan 1?

-- It's every bit as intolerant of the gay activists to condemn Robertson's statements as it is of him to condemn homosexual behavior. --
I'd say it was rather more so. Robertson simply said what they do is wrong (based on the belief system which undergirds Western Civilzation, BTW) but in fact he does not condemn them; that's between them and God. He goes on to say he loves them and hopes they find the truth, or the Truth if you prefer.
Nor did he call for their behavior to be outlawed or banned.
Haven't seen an equally tolerant statement from the many who are actually condemning him yet, but I have heard many calls for his outright firing and that his speech should be at least the basis for shunning and intolerance or should actually be banned as hate speech.

The theft of years of a 40 year old with it adds so much pain to an already difficult situation its pretty hard to deal with.

Cap'n, that Ryan thing indicates a tone deafness comparable to A&E's, missed an opportunity for him to paper over the Boehner gratuitous slam on the TP, and that makes me ask "why?". Immigration? "We will fix it later" no longer makes any sense at all to anyone with an IQ>75.

Posted by: Jeff Dobbs | December 20, 2013 at 10:18 AM
Yeah, I know that Reid gets a hefty and tax free subsidy for his insurance in flagrant violation of the law which explicitly limits subsidies to poor people, but I'm asking a different question. In many of the exchanges there is no plan available at any price which allows out-of-network coverage. This particularly affects people who are legal residents in one place but spend lots of time in a different place. Which pretty much defines any member of Congress not from VA or MA...

Robertson 'never saw a black person mistreated...'
He is clueless as to why.
"That is because governance in Phil Robertson's Louisiana was premised on terrorism. As late as 1890, the majority of people in Louisiana were black. As late as 1902, they still lived under threat of slavery through debt peonage and the convict-lease system. Virtually all of them were pilfered of their vote and their tax dollars. Plunder and second slavery were enforced by violence, as when the besiegers of Colfax massacred 50 black freedmen with rifles and cannon and tossed their bodies into a river. Even today the Colfax Massacre is honored in Louisiana as the rightful "end of carpetbag misrule."
The black people who Phil Robertson knew were warred upon. If they valued their lives, and the lives of their families, the last thing they would have done was voiced a complaint about "white people" to a man like Robertson. Ignorance is no great sin and one can forgive the good-natured white person for not knowing how all that cannibal sausage was truly made. But having been presented with a set of facts, Robertson's response is to cite "welfare" and "entitlement" as the true culprits."

OL-- am I to take it that you do not favor constitutional nuance, such as striking down a statute as unconstitutionally applied, rather than 'on its face'. The Federalist Society (for 3 decades) has made a strong case that the Courts should be more amenable to the former rather than the latter, as Marbury is judicial Doctrine rather than explicitly set forth in the Const.

Don't know what I'd do without Orly:
"Dr. Orly Taitz, an attorney who has filed numerous lawsuits related to the birth certificate issue, is behind an effort to obtain a copy of Fuddy’s autopsy. In an exclusive interview with the Western Center for Journalism, she cited several pieces of anecdotal evidence she believes refute official reports.
“'I have a file with all of the media reports on this accident,” she said, “and there are contradictions.'
"Taitz is not alone in speculating that there might be more to Fuddy’s death than has been reported; however, she alleges several eyewitness accounts cast aspersion on official accounts of the crash. For instance, she said there is some debate regarding whether the plane’s pilot made a mayday call prior to the incident. Initial reports, she explained, indicate that no such call was sent."

NK, the unpardonable sin I attribute to Roberts was how hard he had to work to pretend the ACA was constitutional. (tax vs penalty etc)
To me that showed either an undue deference to the wishes of half of Congress over the demands of the Constitution, or in the alternative it showed his personal desire to achieve a political goal again regardless of the requirements of the Constitution.
Both sins in my book.
I do not for a second think he allowed a hidden bomb to get through so that upon its explosion the evils of statism would be revealed for all to see. That would rise to having destroyed the village to save it.
