"Just when I thought I couldn't think any less of this imbecile:"

After Texas beat USC in that title game, Bayless twice declared that Vince Young would win "multiple Super Bowls" for whatever team drafted him. Several times in the intervening years I have inquired of him by e-mail, "in what year will Vince Young winnthe first of those multiple Super Bowls?" No answers.

And yes, I do indeed have a lot of time on my hands.

The ratio of reward to disappointment watching sports, especially for someone prone to supporting underdogs, is prohibitive.
Why do I do it?
Think I won't.

Just for the record, Romney got almost a million more votes than McCain.

Beasts! I did play corner back, and I was less than stellar. I was corner and half back in Highschool, and not first string. Honestly. I was first string at Punter and Kicker, and that's where I played in College. But truth be told..., like my friend Henry, I was a Soccer achiever at University. I only got to play/letter in Football, because I was gifted at Soccer.

Stephanie lots of surprises in the BCS bowls

Never met a punter/kicker who didn't have a screw loose. Nor a goalie. ;)

Stephanie lots of surprises in the BCS bowls

I'm not disparaging kickers/punters and goalies. Some of my fave people. But anyone who sets the JUGS machine on high then gets someone to aim balls at them in goal to practice saves is loopy on my book...

Gus

My Dad's nose was quite CROOKED.

Gus

Stephanie, it might seem odd, but,in H.S and College, during a game, I NEVER had a kick blocked. Ever. I did have many late hits or sort of late hits, but in my H.S. and College football careers, I never had a punt nor kick blocked. On the other hand, I was a CENTER FORWARD on the H.S. and Collegiate Soccer teams. I was a poacher and I scored a lot of goals. 21 at Unversity in 2 years. I did kick many a Goalie square in the MUG.

Somebody shoot this bastard:

"Sleazy Eliot Spitzer turned a resort hot tub into a steamy love cauldron over the weekend — kissing and sucking the toes of his topless mistress, Lis Smith, in front of families with children, mortified witnesses told The Post.

"The still-married former Love Gov and Smith, Mayor de Blasio’s ex-mouthpiece, were spied frolicking near the family pool at around 4 p.m. Sunday at the Half Moon family resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
'It was gross,' said a hotel witness, who was vacationing with her family. 'She had her top off.'"

This morning, at 0705, it is 14F.

Good Morning, Jayyyy OoooooH Emmmmmmmm! ! !

Just landed at Newark Airport. Wind was from 300 degrees, blowing at 30 knots, and just turned on the TV at the Airport Hotel and I see they are calling a windchill at the airport of -17. I believe it. Brrrrrrrr.

About half way across the pond we hit the Jet Stream that I think is whats clobbering all you guys on the east coast, and it was about 150 knots for a few hours.

27F this morning driving to school.

Woke up to a message on the iPhone that FSU won 34-31. Just watched the highlights on ESPN. Some game. Winston in the clutch.

Will not get out of the 30's today.

daddy

My work Weather website sez that in Miss Marple's Indianapolis the current temp is (-13) with winds of 10 knots. Brrrrrrr indeed. That popped up on my radar screen because yesterday we issued another of those operational emergency deals which means the weather is carp and everything's going to be delayed that goes thru Indy. At least it's reporting clear skies for the moment so hopefully her lousy weather has passed.

Button up warm Miss M!

My weather screen also tells me that current Temp in Memphis is (+9), in Ft Worth is (+21) while up in cheery Anchorage Alaska it's a pleasant (+26). Ha!

Sandy Tuzdaze

On the Florida West Coast, in Bradenton, I saw snow flakes come down sometime in the early to mid-70s. Thus, I do not see this cold snap as being the

MAJOR CLIMATIC EVENT
as some of the TV talking heads suggest.

Are the citrus growers still using smudge pots, or the irrigation sprayers in the groves to keep the fruit from freezing, JiB?

Sandy Tuzdaze

Older daughter headed back to college in South East Michigan this morning at 0520.

The warmest part of her journey was here, as previously mentioned, 14F--and it hasn't gotten any warmer in the last three hours.

Brrr.

~~~
daddy, where did you fly out of enr Newark?
henry
Sandy, it was -16 on the drive in but will reach 0 today then get over 30 by the weekend. MI should warm up about a day after we do.
daddy
Sandy,
Charles DeGaulle Airport outside Paris. Last week when we went over eastbound the tailwinds knocked an hour off our historic scheduled time, and today westbound they added on about an hour to the historic scheduled due to headwinds.
Miss Marple
Good morning!
Daddy, that jet stream was going gangbusters when I flew to Rome. We made it to Heathrow from JFK in under 4 1/2 hours, which was pretty amazing. Sure beat the 81/2 hours to Chicago on the return trip!
We are to warm up to 6 degrees today. Whay's making the clearing so hard is that the snow was a wet snow, which then froze in place in sub-zero temps. My driveway was like a giant snow cone. The snow plow guy came and they had a heck of a time clearing it, even had to get a heavy-duty snow blower to chop some of it up.
We will continue to warm through the weekend, at which point we are to get rain, so the next challenge will be flooding. I suppose after that we will have locusts or something.
JIB
Sandy,
Growers mostly spray with water and let the ice insulate the fruit trees. But our groves are mostly in the southern part of the state and they only spray if its 28F and lower for more than 4 hours. However, in the central part of the state the fern growers use their overhead irrigation to cover the plants with ice similar to what the citrus growers would do.
No more smudge pots since its easier to turn on the water.
NK(withnewsoftware)
Daddy-- glad to see you landed safely. We will have Anchorage type weather here today and tomorrow. Then a thaw for everybody, a thaw that should last for atleast 5-7 days.
It was +5F in coastal Ct today, but wind chill was -15. My train was cancelled and for about the 4-5th time in 23 years I was driven into the heated newstand hut; brutal.
NK(withnewsoftware)
Heard Schumer yesterday. He says that the Debt isn't a big deal any more due to tax increases and that ObummerCare is running like a Tag Heuer watch so no reason to talk about that either. So, Schumer says that in 2014 the Congress needs to ignore those issues and raise the minimum wage and add more government jobs. Obviously, we should push and talk about nothing but ObummerCare and the Debt. Schumer shows us the issues that he knows will take the Senate away from the Dems in 2014. Unless that is done, all the RINO, Fnork and primary talk, is just a bunch of nonsense, that concerns only the job prospects of individual career politicians. The only thing I care about politically right now is a Repub Senate; so then we can assess what that does and doesn't do. My bet is that it makes a huge difference for avoiding national bankruptcy and improving jobs for millions. But we'll never know unless the Repubs win the Senate in '14.
It's +4 here in NYC even though current forecast says a low of 10 and high of 13. I think the daily high/low must be based on a noon-to-noon day, so the +4 gets applied to Monday. Anyway, with 17 MPH winds the WCF is well into negative territory. But tomorrow it will be back up in the 20s.
Perhaps DeBlasio will demand that wealthy and warmer Manhattan transfer some of its heat to the chillier and poorer outer boroughs.
Get some ObummerCare 'success stories' out there in January, then their teammates in the Legacy Media will declare victory for ObummerCare, then offer a 'grand bargain' of Immigration amnesty for 'Middle Class tax Cuts' which they know the Repubs will reject, unless there are spending cuts. Hope for the best in November. What the Repubs should do is what Schumer told them, talk about nothing but ObummerCare bailout/waiver repeal and no new debt without those repeals.Pass E-Verify and border security as the first steps to immigration reform. The fnork vision of "conservative," if you can stand it: We can make big government work better than they can. And notice how none of this distinguishes between federal, state, and local government.
http://www.nationalaffairs.com/publications/detail/a-conservative-vision-of-government
The real problem in much of American government is not simply that it is too big but rather that it is antiquated, ineffective, and ill-equipped to handle the most basic functions appropriate for a great and modern country....While there is plenty of evidence that Americans are disillusioned with modern government, there is no evidence that Americans have turned against the aims of modern government.
Conservatives are more likely to be trusted to run the affairs of the nation if they show the public that they grasp the purposes of government, that they fully appreciate it is in desperate need of renovation, and that they know what needs to be done. The American people are deeply practical; they are interested in what works. And they want their government to work. Conservatives know how institutions can and should work in our free society, and they can apply that knowledge to government.
They even cite this as postive: "Governor John Kasich has spurred job creation through innovative investment incentives and balanced Ohio's budget without raising taxes." Great, just what we want is government using the tax system to influence investment decisions. No danger in that process being corrupted.
AllahPundit gets the 'big picture' correct here about Scott Walker's pitch to the TP to focus on weak Dems. But then AllahPundit fails to explain why Repub Senate control os so important for 15-16, yes it will cause Obummer to Veto Bills, yes it will reject his left-most appointments, but he fails to discuss the Budget Reconciliation process that will kill the Dems in '16 when Obummer Vetoes rayional budgets that persuadable voters LIKE. Walker is right, but AllahPundit misses the main point IMO: http://hotair.com/archives/2014/01/06/scott-walker-to-tea-partiers-lets-focus-on-taking-out-democrats-not-our-fellow-republicans/
jimmyk
Great new Republican strategy: We've got the same goals as the Democrats, but we'll be good at it! Trust us! We know you don't want less government in your lives, you just want really competent people telling you what to do.
NK(withnewsoftware)
Ah... Kasich is making the case for his electorate. He's done all these 'good things' which Ohio Persuadables like and demand, and he did it without Tax Increases. That's a win -- a modest win-- for limited government in Ahia. If he wins re-election, he can make the case for smaller government and lower taxes, that still do the things persuables want, with lower taxes. That's the way to win not just elections, but convert the political culture to a more Reddish hue. Conservatives don't get to be dictators like statists, we have to persuade and convince and change political cultures. Stamping out ignorance is hard, but rewarding work.
Nearly 12,000 people visited the same casualty department more than 10 times between 2012 and 2013, while 150 people made more than 50 visits in that year, information obtained under a Freedom of Information (FOI) request showed. Today doctors warned that people making unnecessary trips to A&E were pushing already-overstretched emergency staff to breaking point and putting the lives of those who really need help in danger."
"Because there is no bitter partisanship where there is no discussion of the issues, and there is no divisiveness without debate. Obama is not seeking a dialogue in this campaign to bring about unity; rather, a monologue. Obama wants you silent - unless you agree with him, or until enough people do that your voice is no longer heard."
Henry,
Will the Saudis increase funding of anti-fracking propaganda, funding for AQ terrorists fomenting civil war in Iraq and Syria or both? I'll bet both. The protection of state oligopolies requires stern measures and BOzo's coddling of the Persians adds another disruptive factor to the practice of Saudi thievery.
jimmyk
One more quote from that piece, and then I'll shut up:
Arthur Brooks, president of the American Enterprise Institute, recently noted that the "government social safety net for the truly indigent is one of the greatest achievements of our society....We have to declare peace on the safety net." Providing such services and securing that safety net does not mean accepting the technocratic mindset of the liberal welfare state. It means replacing that mindset with a conservative approach that puts government on the side of civil society and private enterprise in order to achieve a more just and thriving society.
Yes, a "great" achievement that has virtually destroyed the family among those it has "helped." From Taranto yesterday:
In his landmark 1965 report, "The Negro Family: A Case for National Action," Daniel Patrick Moynihan observed that "both white and Negro illegitimacy rates have been increasing, although from dramatically different bases. The white rate was 2 percent in 1940; it was 3.07 percent in 1963. In that period, the Negro rate went from 16.8 percent to 23.6 percent."
The 2011 figures (which exclude Hispanics) were 29.1% for whites and 72.3% for blacks--a more than eightfold increase for whites and more than threefold for blacks.
"Another such victory and we shall be utterly undone."
Captain Hate
Yes, thank you, Steph.
According to Dan Patrick, Goodell must have given up all hopes of an 18 game schedule and will try to accomplish a back door way of increasing revenue by adding an additional wildcard team. This will further cheapen the regular season, not to mention allow increasingly crummy teams in the playoffs (although, arguably, let a 10-6 Cardinal team in). Here's what last weekend would've looked like under the proposed scheme:
AFC:
#1 Broncos - bye
#7 Steelers (8-8) @ #2 Patriots
#6 Chargers @ #3 Bengals
#5 Chiefs @ #4 Colts
NFC:
#1 Seahawks - bye
#7 Cardinals (10-6) @ #2 Panthers
#6 Saints @ #3 Eagles
Beasts of England
I just had a disturbing experience. Headed back to the lake from an errand in town and a car pulls up next to me. I look over, and this kid is just jawing away at me. No big deal - I haven't cut him off or anything. He pulls up next to me again and he's still at it. I, being me, shoot him a bird. He points a gun at me. With his finger on the trigger.
I hit the brakes and let him get ahead and I note the first four numbers of his tag. I called 911 and he's about fifty feet ahead of me and notices I'm on the phone. (I should have used Bluetooth, but I was a little frazzled) He pulls over and I don't even bother looking over, but blast past him. He pulls back on the road and is trying to catch up to me, but there's no way he's gonna catch me in my XJL, but there's a red light ahead. I'm still on the horn with 911, and I slam on the brakes and U-turn at a cut-through. He takes a right at the light and I lose sight.
911 informs me that they have a car in the area and I'm waiting on a call back. Stupid shit. Problem is, I have the only silver XJL in town and now I feel exposed. And I thought frozen pipes were my bad news for the day. Ugh.
That is happening this year and it happened for two consecutive years in 1975-76.
It happened less severely many times in between those two events.
jimmyk
Beasts, something like that happened to me in Detroit when I was a teenager. I entered a freeway and pulled in ahead of someone, appropriately, but he honked his horn as though I'd cut him off. Then he pulled past me and I gave him the finger. He displayed a gun. I slowed down so he would continue past me, then he slowed down so that I would catch up to him. I think in the end I got off at the next exit.
