Vanity Fair publishes a piece pushing back against some of the Woody Allen support that has passed by this week.
10 Undeniable Facts About the Woody Allen Sexual-Abuse Allegation
By Maureen Orth
7. The Yale-New Haven Hospital Child Sex Abuse Clinic’s finding that Dylan had not been sexually molested, cited repeatedly by Allen’s attorneys, was not accepted as reliable by Judge Wilk, or by the Connecticut state prosecutor who originally commissioned them. The state prosecutor, Frank Maco, engaged the Yale-New Haven team to determine whether Dylan would be able to perceive facts correctly and be able to repeat her story on the witness stand. The panel consisted of two social workers and a pediatrician, Dr. John Leventhal, who signed off on the report but who never saw Dylan or Mia Farrow. No psychologists or psychiatrists were on the panel. The social workers never testified; the hospital team only presented a sworn deposition by Dr. Leventhal, who did not examine Dylan.
All the notes from the report were destroyed. Her confidentiality was then violated, and Allen held a news conference on the steps of Yale University to announce the results of the case. The report concluded Dylan had trouble distinguishing fantasy from reality. (For example, she had told them there were “dead heads” in the attic and called sunset “the magic hour.” In fact, Mia kept wigs from her movies on styrofoam blocks in a trunk in the attic.) The doctor subsequently backed down from his contention.
The Connecticut state police, the state attorney, and Judge Wilk all had serious reservations about the report’s reliability.
And this just in: The NY Times runs Woody Allen's response to Dylan Farrow's open letter. Let me cherry pick this:
The police began their investigation; a possible indictment hung in the balance. I very willingly took a lie-detector test and of course passed because I had nothing to hide. I asked Mia to take one and she wouldn’t.
And back to 10 Undeniable Facts:
3. Allen refused to take a polygraph administered by the Connecticut state police. Instead, he took one from someone hired by his legal team. The Connecticut state police refused to accept the test as evidence. The state attorney, Frank Maco, says that Mia was never asked to take a lie-detector test during the investigation.
Allen leans heavily on the Child Sex Abuser Clinic report to establish his innocence.
And I like this line of reasoning:
Even the venue where the fabricated molestation was supposed to have taken place was poorly chosen but interesting. Mia chose the attic of her country house, a place she should have realized I’d never go to because it is a tiny, cramped, enclosed spot where one can hardly stand up and I’m a major claustrophobe. The one or two times she asked me to come in there to look at something, I did, but quickly had to run out.
One of the 10 Facts is this:
8. Allen changed his story about the attic where the abuse allegedly took place. First, Allen told investigators he had never been in the attic where the alleged abuse took place. After his hair was found on a painting in the attic, he admitted that he might have stuck his head in once or twice. A top investigator concluded that his account was not credible.
To which I will add that an alternative hypothesis is that Allen chose a molestation venue where no one would be likely to look for him.
MORE; Anti-Allen skepticism in Slate, but this is credibility-crushing:
In that segment, Allen tells Kroft that it would have been “illogical” to molest Dylan “at the height of a very bitter, acrimonious custody fight.”
The problem with this line of reasoning is that Dylan Farrow’s allegations did not emerge in the midst of a custody battle. According to Phoebe Hoban’s 1992 New York magazine story, as of early August 1992—eight months after Mia Farrow had discovered Allen’s sexual relationship with her daughter Soon-Yi Previn—Allen had been “prepared to sign a 30-page document that virtually precluded his seeing the children he doted on without a chaperone.” Then, on Aug. 4, 1992, Dylan told her mother that Woody Allen had sexually assaulted her in Mia’s Connecticut home. At that point, Mia and Dylan went to Dylan’s pediatrician, who reported the allegations to authorities.Allen did not sue for custody of Dylan and her two brothers, Moses and Ronan, until Aug. 13, 1992, a week after he was informed of Dylan’s accusations.
Does Slate have editors? If they followed the link provided to the 1992 New York magazine story they will learn that the papers about to be signed in early August were the culmination of many months of negotiation described in the story as including "histrionics worth of a grade-B movie". The subsequent filing of a custody suit was simply the next move in the legal chess match; it hardly indicates that the two sides had been getting along swimmingly beforehand. (bonus laugher, or head-scratcher - part of the negotiation was about whether Mia would appear in Woody's next movie; nice to know she was furious but not that furious.)
That said, the story also includes one of the dumber rhetorical questions I have seen: in commenting on the timing of the alleged incident, an Allen supporter asks "Why would someone on their right mind select the day when they are minutes away from signing papers?". Hmm, so now Woody and Mia are exemplars of mental health and good judgment?
Allen's op-ed from tomorrow's NYT.
(Yes, I've mastered time travel!)
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/02/09/opinion/sunday/woody-allen-speaks-out.html?smid=tw-share&_r=0&referrer=
Deserves a read.
I remember reading a ?NYT Sunday mag account of all this way back in the day, and I thought Mia trumped it all up then.
I'm definitely in the Moses Farrell camp now. And I have always thought Allen's relationship with his current wife when she was the teenaged daughter of his then lover is completely inappropriate.
And with no offense intended to anybody who has a large family, who fosters 60 + kids, that sort of amazing thing---but let's just say that kind of behavior by a single parent is at least six deviations out from the mean.

centralcal, I watch all things classified as Big Public Events. Royal weddings? I am there at 5AM watching live. I have watched all Inaugurations since Kennedy, all political conventions ditto, moon launches, Olympic Ceremonies, The Investiture of Charles as Prince of Wales at Carnaervon Castle, Sir Winston Churchill's funeral (I was in high school), etc.
I have an odd fascination of spectacle when combined with history. So that is why I watch. I can therfore tell you that the Russians did less well than the Chinese, whose opening with a thousand drums was the most spectacular (and the most frightening in its implications) of all opening ceremonies within my memory.
The torchlighting was meh, since no one will ever be able to top that archer lighting the torch with a flaming arrow at Barcelona.
And NBC has ruined the Olympics. When ABC had them the emphasis was on sport, and human interest stories were only covered when it was pertinent to the coverage. NBC makes these sob stories a central focus, which is ridiculous, as they have turned off many viewers.
I miss Jim McKay and Roone Arledge and the 1960's coverage that was done so well. Every time I see Costas and Lauer my contempt increases. I wish I could get the IOC to rescind NBC's monopoly on coverage, but that's a lost cause since NBC probably bribed them all.

From the comment section with the Allen op-ed:
This story is a projection screen for every reader's own particular biases. What a reader sees in this story has little if anything to do with with what "actually" happened in the Allen-Farrow family. My own bias: my mother falsely accused my father of molesting my sister in the midst of a brutal divorce and custody battle. Decades later my sister remains tortured by the uncertainty of whether something happened to her, although she has no concrete memory of anything happening, and the story that something happened always originated with my mother and not with herself. These accusations destroyed my family and my father's life in particular, who was devastated by the suspicion that would be cast his direction (he died an early death and attributed his illness to the extreme emotional stress of his divorce). I am thus familiar with the witch-hunt mentality that accusations of sexual abuse can engender. When the accusations are false, lives are destroyed. And how terrible for those who actually suffered abuse: are their true needs even being met through these public rituals of sacrifice? When will a coherent story emerge about (1) the true scope of actual sexual abuse of children, and (2) the scapegoating fantasies that devastate so many others yet get much less press? If publishing the Farrow and Allen letters leads to a drive to raise awareness about both problems, then perhaps it will have served a constructive purpose. Otherwise it's hard to see one.

Jane - Here is a shorter, easier? version of the code needed to post a picture within a JOM comment:
< img src="" >
[ with NO space after the < , and NO space before the > ]
All you need, in addition to the code, is the URL of the picture you want to post.
Copy the URL into the code between the pair of quotation marks, and voilá, your picture will be posted.
Your full code will read like this:
< img src="http://WWW.JOM.typhus-pad.com/URL-of-your-picture.jpg" >
[ with the < and > placed without spaces following and preceding them ]
. . . and you will be able to post pics like this:

Another Jane, but not as attractive as JOM Jane !
Next up, a "how-to" on using www.picresize.com to shrink pictures to fit within the width of the JOM columns. It's easy-peasy, too . . .
Hope that this helps you to post pics!

Haven't used google in a long time but on Bing every picture has a "more sizes" link to the lower right. Most pictures have many sizes available including those of 400 and under width.
Occasionally you'll have to resize one but not that often.

Plus it does all the text formatting for you too (bold, italics, etc.) and you don't have to worry about missing tags that screw up the thread until someone comes along to fix it! A frequent occurrence here, alas. LOL.

There's a certain place in Hell for people who use children as pawns in divorce battles. And that earlier thing about all the 26 year olds living with their parents; I'd be borderline suicidal if my nest suddenly became unempty. We raised our children to be independent; the JEF's crummy economy deserves a certain amount of blame but after that it has more to do with how well of a job the parents did.

And NBC has ruined the Olympics.
NBC Sports has been a major clustereff for a long time. I think the downfall began when they fired Marv Albert for getting hinky with some dumpy skeezer who went screaming to the press probably because she was mentally ill. This was at the same time Slick was having his Monica problems so obviously I was very upset about the wrong person keeping his job. They dropped NBA basketball shortly after that and Marv went elsewhere and became known as the gold standard in play by play announcing. At that point they had zero presence in any of the major sports (sorry hockey fans). They then signed a whopper contract with Notre Dame to carry their football games right when that program went in the toilet. When they finally picked up the Sunday night NFL games they put Olbermann on the in studio desk where he irritated so many people they got rid of him and now the sanctimonious Costas has filled that void. I guess we should be glad that the Maddow feller and Special Ed haven't been added to the Olympic coverage.

Ol' Raymond Maxwell's poem might come in handy if Hillary gets the nomination -
The Queen’s Henchmen
request the pleasure of your company
at a Lynching – to be held
at 23rd and C Streets NW
on Tuesday, December 18, 2012
just past sunset.
Dress: Formal, Masks and Hoods -
the four being lynched
must never know the identities
of their executioners, or what/
whose sin required their sacrifice.
A blood sacrifice –
to divert the hounds -
to appease the gods -
to cleanse our filth and
satisfy our guilty consciences.
Arrive promptly at sunset –
injustice will be swift.
there will be no trial,
no review of evidence,
no due process, and no
accountability.
Dress warmly -
a chilling effect will instantly
envelop Foggy Bottom.
Extrajudicial.
Total impunity.
A kangaroo court in
a banana republic.
B.Y.O.B.
Refreshments will not be served
because of the continuing resolution.
And the ones being lynched?
Who cares? They are pawns in a game.
Our game. All suckers, all fools,
all knaves who volunteered to serve -
Us. And the truth? The truth?
What difference at this point does it make?
In the event of inclement weather,
or the Queen’s incapacitation,
her Henchmen will carry out this lynching -
as ordered, as planned.

Rick the huge mistake often made in reducing the national debt to the scary per capita amount that it is, is that the writer usually assumes that each person will repay his own share. Of course now that we are perfectly OK with most of the cost of government being paid by the top qunitile or decile of legal citizens, I can only assume that BL will have to pay his own share and those of a dozen others.
When the Cray reboots I will figure the decimal points.

Marlene, I personally think that he spends very little time doing anything but watching TV sports, being stoned on whatever substance, and partying with his buddies.
I think he golfs to have an excuse to meet unsavory characters for various unsavory activities and plotting.
Once in a while he reads a speech his handlers give him, and his lack of input it shown by how much he laughs at his own jokes, like they are a big surprise to him.
I am afraid it is Jarrett who is mostly calling the shots, and I think she is flat-out crazy.
It really has gotten beyond joking, I agree.

Jane,
Not fair. Scan DavidM's puerile drivel and failure to respond to DoT or MarkO for evidence of idiotic equivalency with any of the Lackwitz Sisters. RSE could use that bit of feather passing as a perfect example of peck and drool Commie Core indoctrination.
