The NY Times blurbs their latest attempt to resuscitate the Obama agenda:
By THE EDITORIAL BOARD
Paying workers more can help companies lower turnover and improve productivity.
We hope the Times publishers take this advice to heart as we contemplate these headlines at the Huffington Post:
NYT Editor Speaks Out About 'Painful' Layoffs
NYT Lays Off 'Far Fewer People' Than It Expected
Top New York Times Editor Stepping Down
Layoffs Approaching At NY Times
Major NYT Layoffs
New York Times Layoffs Begin
New York Times Panic: Staffers Told To Rein In Spending While They Await The Bloodbath
Clearly the Times could improve morale and workplace stability by giving their employees a 40% raise. Or does the advice they are so happy to dole out to others only work for real businesses?
Wonder why those dumbass businessmen have never realized paying workers more than they produce is good for business.
Posted by: Ignatz | February 28, 2014 at 12:54 AM
Offering higher than normal wages or benefits can lower your turnover and increase your productivity as long as it is an incentive.
But across the board increases work opposite to that as the incentive to be more productive is no longer attached. I contend that it would actually increase turnover in some cases as the incentive to stay is no longer there.

They would probably have to get Carlos Slim's permission to do that, and I doubt it would be forthcoming.
Without his money, the NYT would have had to have been sold off for its assets years ago.

Posted by: Robin, baking with butter | February 28, 2014 at 07:25 AM
Robin, Just like Bill Clinton, we will never be rid of him.
Even if my prediction doesn't come true, Obama will set up shop in DC and constantly critique whoever is in office, because, basically, it's not him.
He will go around the country making inflammatory speeches for exorbitant sums of money. He will do his best to set neighbor against neighbor, women against men, blacks vs whites, Christiains vs Jews, supporting Muslim causes and making insulting comments in every interview and appearance.
He will demand MORE money for his library (which I think he will attempt to set up in DC) and insist that his pension and expense money aren't enough and he is being penalized because he is black.
He will probably get a talk show on cable and push his community organizing idea of Marxism.
I suppose I have a pessimistic view of things because I am sick of winter and another storm is coming.

hit and run jr had his golf tryout yesterday. It was a good time and he did great. 15 players competing for 10 spots on the team.
They all play from the white tees -- boys and girls. Challenging. Way challenging. Too much for many of the kids -- it's a small school, and many of them are first time golfers. hit and run jr has hit balls on the range a number of times, but this was honestly only his third time on a course, and the first time on a non par-3 course.
The scores are limited to double-par on any hole. You reach double-par and you pick up. Just about every kid reached double-par on every hole.
We get to the last hole. A straight forward par 3. hit and run jr took out his driver and cranked one. But it went right, bounced off some shells around another tee box . . . and we never found it. Took a drop (they don't have to play stroke and distance and lost balls are scored like a lateral hazard). hit and run jr pures a hybrid, pin high just off the green. Took his putter, ran the ball through a ditch, up a slope, onto the green and it rolled to 8 feet. Stepped up to the putt, lined it up . . . drained it.
For a 5. I didn't see all the scores, but I bet it was one of maybe 5 scores where anyone came in under double par.
I started writing this comment . . . and got a text from mrs hit and run.
He made the team! Woot!

Mind you Pinch Sultzberger will become a staple Harvard B-School case study (does Maguire have a Harvard MBA?-- I digress) a study of how to destroy the value of an iconic multi-generational family business, first in product quality, then in economic value-- and then be murdered by his grand nieces/nephews who lose their trust funds. The NYT minimum wage advice is akin to Herr Doktor Krugman giving $1500/hr advice on how to run a virtual energy company... wait!

Speaking of the "My Brother's Keeper" (named for a blame-shifting excuse by a murderer) I am still puzzled on why the half-brother George, living in a slum, hasn't been sent a couple of thousand (less than one of Michelle's outfits) to get him out of that hovel.
A normal person would have sent some cash with the "Oh, no, I didn't know" excuse, garnering some feel-good publicity and making himself look good.
So why not help the guy? Mystery. I wondered about that this morning while reading about this My Brother's Keeper thing (irony being lost on the White House PR people). The only explanation I could come up with is that George is a Christian.

"Paying workers more can help companies lower turnover and improve productivity."
More than what?
That's the thing about these ridiculous arguments, there's no baseline. We need less inequality. Less than what? Than whatever it happens to be.
If anything, the workers getting the minimum are already getting "more."
Congrats, hit!
Can I take the occasion to brag about Miss K making the jr high basketball team? One of only 4 7th graders along with 10 8th graders. And she even gets 10-15 minutes of playing time off the bench, unless it's a close game :). The most remarkable thing about the games is the huge number of jump balls--seemingly about 50% of the possessions.

Oh here we go:
The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), a U.S. Muslim Brotherhood entity, is proudly announcing that the U.S. military is again using their chaplains for active-duty service after a 15-year lull.
ISNA has a well-documented extremist history. In 1991, the Muslim Brotherhood listed ISNA as one of its main fronts. Declassified FBI memos said ISNA is a component of the Muslim Brotherhood, who sees its “work in America as a kind of grand jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within.”
In 2007, the U.S. government labeled ISNA a U.S. Muslim Brotherhood entity and an unindicted co-conspirator in a terrorism-financing trial involving the Holy Land Foundation funneling money to Hamas. The label was upheld in 2009 because of “ample” evidence linking ISNA to Hamas. Last year, ISNA’s Canadian affiliate lost its status as a charity because of its accounting discrepancies and links to Pakistani terrorists.
The two chaplains endorsed by ISNA are Sgt. Mustapha Rahouchen, who will be used by the U.S. Army, and Captain Rafael Lantiqua, who was chosen by the U.S. Air Force.
In April 2013, the Clarion Project broke the story that the U.S. Air Force Chaplain Corps had paid ISNA almost $5,000 for two advertisements in its magazine. When we contacted the Air Force about ISNA’s ties to the Brotherhood, we received the following response:
“The Islamic Society of North America is one of many religious organizations recognized by the Department of Defense that satisfy the ecclesiastical requirements to endorse qualified religious ministry professionals to serve as chaplains within the Military Departments.”

Curious, prosecutor behind John Doe I & II hires private law firm. Civil Rights lawsuits are a good thing, but taxpayers get shafted on both sides. Also, the judge is appealing the quashing of her subpoenae, the prosecutors are counter suing because they want search w/o probable cause, and Walker's campaign is mentioned in another "secret" decision related to prosecutors doing something wrong. It's tough to name the players when everything is under seal.

Of the triple digit items that I loathe Clenis for, number one was how his dog Buddy, named for one of his white trash kin, was hit by a car and killed outside his New York overpriced shanty. With all the taxpayer jack that the predator gets after staining the White House, he could've spent something to have somebody watch the poor animal. Or give it to somebody like Betty Currie, who got Socks the cat when Rodham and the special needs daughter were too irresponsible to take care of him and he led a happy life away from the grifters.

--For 5+ years JEF's pathological narcissism has been a demonstrated fact. This treatment of the brother, starts to look like something worse. Sociopath? Misanthrope?--
The distinction between a real Narcissist and a psychopath is unclear.
They both have no, as in zero, empathy toward other people. Others are merely props to be moved about and manipulated.
Both also are pathological liars.
The only difference, if there is any, seems to be psychopaths are bigger risk takers, are more reckless and are less concerned about their own safety or fate.
More likely, Narcissists are just cautious psychopaths more concerned with preserving themselves than overt psychos.
Clinically otherwise I suspect there is no difference.

This is one of those programs that everyone including the GOP will accept just to keep from being called a racist.
From CH's link @9:22am,
"President Obama on Thursday will establish a new interagency task force charged with promoting opportunities for young men of color through an examination of government policies and programs."
Naive question: The government can spend money on one group based explicitly on race? I realize that's the practical effect of some programs aimed at "inner city yutes" or "underserved minorities." As objectionable as those are, this seems to cross a line with an explicit racial test. But I guess that makes me the racist.

It's a study about flies, so you know, we should probably change all of human society now or something.
But look, I will concede this . . . falling in love with mrs hit and run made me all sorts of stupid. It goes all the way back to the first time I asked her on a date. Called her dorm room, all nervous and stuff. She answers the phone. I panic. Stammer, studder, "Um, ah, can I talk to Jenny?" (her roommate) "I um, yeah I need to borrow her notes from class today?"
Jenny gets on the phone and I'm like, "OMG! Don't say anything, please. I panicked. Help me out, think of a way to give her back the phone without making me look stupid."
Jenny was all, "Yeah, too late for that."
And . . . the rest is history (of me just getting stupider and stupider in love with her).

The Five didn't see the irony OR the twisted use of a scriptural quote in that program. And the program itself is going to end up being a way to channel money to cronies while pretending to help the unfortunate, who will get NO help just like how the use the schools for their union buddies and ignore the failure of the educational system and the students damaged by such; or how they PRETEND to care about women while making them prey to irresponsible men and abortion butchers.
Every single program they propose is a way to get money to their pals using fake compassion to cover their tracks.

Iggy, you cynic. Actually the Russian military is not very large at this point, they are still in Chechnya, suffering fromMoslem separatists, etc. To my untutored eye it looks like a split Ukraine is possible.

Either she is or someone is "clearing the field."

Yes, Mrs, Marple, you answered your own question, Captain, meanwhile the chocolate
ration delivery truck was held up, by the Polar Vortex, it seems,

Then we're screwed if nobody is willing to call something what it really is.
Tell me about it.

I am thinking that the Polar Vortex should look like that Mr. Freeze character from Batman back in the 60's.
narciso, another month or so and I will understand everything you post. You sure do give my brain a good workout!

it's >>>a new interagency task force<<<
awesome the my bother's keeper breakout session dedicated to spending mo' money, mo' money, mo' money on midnight basketball and gun buyback. it'll need a czar (hum I hear Ezra Klein isn't busy and really wants a $10 million/year budget and staff of 30-and he could get some street cred in the process).

Takes a special gall to have spent trillions during your presidency and through those malignant policies inordinately have harmed "young men of color" and then act all benevolent (speaking of dictators) and act like you give a s*** after destroying any real opportunities they might have had.

News from the Telegraph (again a UK paper) that the Ukrainians are pleading for help from the Brits and the US.

They won't get it. Obama is afraid of Putin and the Brits are afraid of losing the natural gas. This is going to be a tragedy, and I am ashamed of our government more than I can say.

Parent bad behavior is one of the ugliest aspects of youth and high school sports. The hoverers and screamers do serious damage to their children and their relationships. I was in athletic fundraising-it is the very rare and gifted student-athlete who can compete consistently at a collegiate level. Most parents don't understand that their child isn't going to get a scholarship and isn't going to be a pro. Stop screaming, let them play and let them shift to other activities when and if their interests take them in another direction.

Since they blame the weather, when it's not a
tsunami or some other source, I think it would look like the abominable snowman in the
the old Rudolf the Red nose special.

Sounds like Imre Nagy in '56, or Dubchek in '68, i'm afraid.

More rumors that Hillary is in bad health.
I would think it likely that she has some chronic STD from Bill, assuming they ever actually consummated their marriage.

Congrats , Hit and Jimmy. Jimmy, watch her knees--seriously, make sure she understands how to land and shift position properly--it's a problem for girls.

don't think it needs to be all that big to convince them they made a bad decision.

MM:
I hope the handlers spirit the dog away at the end of his term. I think Obama would have the dog euthanized out of spite.
Inser the obligatory concern that Obama will have the dogs butchered and prepared for dinner.

always in need of a morning eye opener... constant hangover.

The Brothers Keepers program is racist, and stupid. Put financial disincentives in place for single parenthood and you will solve the problem.
So has Hillary got a brain tumor? A bad sinus or is she putting it out there in case the document dump today doesn't work out?
No worries Hill, Obama will protect you - for the right price.
