--I like Scott Hamilton and Peggy Fleming's commentary on the skating.--

I probably would too...if I could force myself to watch ice skating.
Toss a puck in there, then maybe.

rich@gmu

...more options for obtaining affordable health insurance outside the workplace...easier for people to take a risk and start a business, take time out of the labor force to raise a family, or retire when they are ready...

Miss Marple

LOL! I like all forms of skating. Will be watching the hockey as well.

Since I am a terrible ice skater who wobbles around and falls down, I am always amazed at the people who can do figure skating or hockey at high speed with all sorts of moves, whether artistic or athletic.

Eh, you don't have to like it. I don't like basketball very much.

And many thanks for your contributions as JOM's "resident civil engineering expert" and go-to guy for all things related to large construction projects.

Beasts of England

Saw some of those, rich. Of course, those aren't sufficient reasons to muck up the whole industry...

Captain Hate

Thanks for mentioning Reagan's birthday, DoT; Levin just mentioned it.

--Eh, you don't have to like it.--

I know. Just messin with ya, MM.
I actually do enjoy watching a failed triple salchow or kowtow or whatever it is splayed all over the ice and I take a back seat to no one in my appreciation of a well executed quadruple camel toe....well, in the women's division anyway.

rich@gmu

Beasts-

printed the whole glossy from the WH blog.

item 1#...these provisions...will increase the demand for goods and services throughout the economy at a time when the unemloyment rate is still elevated...

still reading it. YIKES!!! it is worse than we thought.

narciso

Yes, they are just extending the Bialystok scam,

narciso

Well if needs must, you mute the sound,

daddy

I've got Lou Dobb's in front of his chalkboard on pause.

Under the headline ObamaCare Trainwreck, on the right he has some numbers provided from the Duke Study.

Under the Subhead Subsidy Cliff:

$62, 040-------$211
$62,041-------S1,342
--------------------
$13,000.00

He explains the numbers above as follows:

If a Wisconsin family makes no more than $62,040, they can purchase the cheapest ObamaCare plan for $211 per month.

If a Wisconsin family makes $62,041, (only 1 single dollar more) they must pay $1,342 per month for that same cheapest ObamaCare plan.

Doing the math then, the cost to that family of making that 1 extra dollar per year would cost that family $13,000 more per year for ObamaCare Health Insurance than if they made 1 dollar less.

Lou's bottom math by my calculations is a bit off: I get $11,462 dollars that that 1 extra dollar in earnings would cost, but Lou may be dealing with some other subsidy factors I am aware of. Regardless, the overall point stands---Why work for that 1 extra dollar if it's going to cost you an extra $11, 462 bucks?

In a way it's like the Producers in "SpringTime For Hitler."

We gotta' lose money---what are we gonna' do.

Beasts of England

It's gonna increase the demand for goods and services? Oh. Well, I'm all for it then...

Ignatz

The Dems are getting so whacky and preposterous I believe by 2016 they may have painted themselves into a very tiny corner with everyone but the true believers.
I can't see most independents being anything but repulsed by the increasing zaniness and lawlessness of them.

Crazies can only keep it together until the craziness starts becoming so overt it has to be explained away with more craziness.

Jim Rhoads f/k/a vnjagvet

JIB;

Happy Birthday. What an honor share a birthday with Ronaldus Maximus. Hope you are very mellow now.

Patriot4Freedom

rich and Beasts - Their definition of "affordable" seems a bit different from ours, methinks . . . Perhaps another case of an "I do not think it means what you think it means" moment.

We see affordable as the result of cost savings from market efficiencies, greater access, competition and greater consumer choices, with fewer regulatory impositions/restrictions.

They see affordable as expanding the number of recipients of government-provided benefits and services, and the provision of greater subsidies from higher taxes levied on those who actually do the work.

Miss Marple

daddy, I wonder if employers will be paying overtime with discount cards at Wal-Mart or wherever, drawings for prizes, extra vacation time, etc.

Much like employer health insurance came to be during wage and price controls during WWII, I wonder if these things will start to appear.

Also, I am certain that a black market economy is already well under way. I have had too many people knock on my door looking to do work for cash.

Captain Hate

Per Levin, Patrick Leahy, a truly loathsome POS, refused to let Daniel Faulkner's widow address the Senate committee who approved the lawyer for her husband's murderer as heading up the DoJ's civil rights division who, in his defense of his client, referred to her husband in every cartoonish and demeaning manner that the race baiting left engages. Prominent donks who approved this included Diane "Gun Grabber" Feinstein, Schmucky Schooooooomer, Dick "Drooling Retard" Durbin and the terminally unfunny Stuart Smiley.

Beasts of England

Without a doubt, P4F.

There's a significant cash economy, Miss Marple. Having been involved in the bar industry on several occasions, I see a slew of people who have never had a real paycheck (or ever filed taxes). I wonder - but haven't asked - if the new healthcare laws / taxes will capture some of this economy. It could be one of the very few benefits of this fiasco.

Danube on iPad

I am more prepared to listen to Trey Gowdy right now than to any other politician. That young man has the fire in him.

daddy

I wonder if employers will be paying overtime with discount cards at Wal-Mart or wherever, drawings for prizes, extra vacation time, etc.

Makes sense to me Miss Marple,

If there is a benefit to getting around something, (and there definitely is per Lou Dobb's example from the Duke study), then people are going to find it.

Eric in Boise up above asked how can these folks believe such stuff?

Eric, I think when Harry Reid told us that Paying our Income Tax was Voluntary is as good a point as any in recent times to show where the Left's Logic insanity began.

narciso

So, the entire Star Wars bar scene, Levin is well aware how all the Top Men of their day, left his boss Ed Meese, for dead, when the
independent counsel sharks circles not once but twice,

rich@gmu

Beasts and P4F-

it is a headscratcher...maybe a keysanian analysis of the "saving" and multipler effects of the ACA.

Iggy-

wake me up when they start talking alien invasion-like Klingon aliens.

Captain Hate

I'm surprised he's never brought that up that I've heard, narc; because that's the way I vaguely remember it.

rich@gmu

>>>I wonder if employers will be paying overtime with discount cards at Wal-Mart or wherever, drawings for prizes, extra vacation time<<<

I think most of that would be illegal under state and federal law.

daddy

And Miss M,

On the other side of the spectrum, if someone happens to have a personal enemy at work, and they have the ability to make your W-2 reflect more money than you thought you were going to make, then that could lead to massive expenditures on your part, and who knows how much you'd have to spend tap-dancing with the IRS, (an organization which we all know is always very understanding when dealing with average citizens).

narciso

Yes, this was what caused the fainting couches and the vapors back then;

Miss Marple

Rich, When I used to sell furniture, we got prizes like dinner certificates, days off, etc. They were never reflected on our W-2.

How are they going to tax you on a 30% off coupon? Do they tax you on the money you don't spend at the grocery because you used those coupons in the Sunday paper? No.

Also, employers can put in fitness centers. (Many already have) which saves employees from having to spend money at a gym.

You are not devious enough. I grew up around those people who moved up here from Appalachia. They are the ones who will make it by trimming trees, plowing snow, etc. for cash.

I have learned a lot watching how businesses operate and how individuals avoid the tax man. We once hired a painter who not only wanted cash (not even a check) but he wouldn't register to vote, because he wanted to keep a low profile. LOL!

Miss Marple

Good night, all!

Centralcal on iPad

DoT at 11:00 pm - xoxo - agree completely with you on Trey Gowdy!

narciso

She's part of the reason, why some might be reluctant to dialog with the IRS

Captain Hate

The items in that article wouldn't even make the cut for the McAuliffe top ten.

clarice

Good night, MM.

Eric in Boise

Good catch, Daddy. I'd forgotten about that little tidbit.

So, in keeping with my earlier point, is he a deluded fool (who actually believes this drivel), or a conniving liar, who never has?

I'm leaning with the former, a la the doddering old fool, the perfect Senate counterpart to Pelosi's rictus of cluelessness.

But wait a minute..we're talking about the leader of the US Senate, and the most powerful member of the House minority party. How would childish, naive fools possibly advance that far?

I'm getting a headache. I believe I'll take an Aleve and turn in.

Nytol.

narciso

the latter, EiB, think of him, as the modern Senator Geary

Captain Hate

In Levin's third hour, he takes on Lurch and Flathead; much hilarity ensues.

narciso

True, although Mark 'Tiger Beat' Landler, has to have honorable mention,

daddy

Costas is already flogging the socials issues. Wouldn't it be nice just to see the damned athletic competitions? Ugh.

Beasts,

That is the great benefit of getting to watch the Olympics on channels in Asia or in Europe---no mindless American Talking Head blather, and simply continual broadcasts of the competition, most without commercials. I am so spoiled now that I would rather watch Baseball in Japan, NBA in China, NFL in Paris, and the Soccer World Cup and Golf's Ryder Cup overseas, rather than in America. I caught much of the last Summer Olympics in Singapore and that was great.

I think if there was a way to market the overseas sports feeds to homes here in America, somebody could make a killing.

rich@gmu

Miss Marple

>>>You are not devious enough.<<<

speechless...I'm speechless.

boricuafudd

Olympics another item that Putin delivered for Russia that Obama failed at.

Daddy

Totally agree, I watch as many sports as I can on the Net to avoid the mindless chatter, Costas is without a doubt one of the worst.

Eric in Boise

I hear "Downton Abbey" in Vietnamese is enough to spoil anybody.

Beasts of England

@daddy: You're comment reminds me of what Peter Alliss said about golf commentary. (paraphrasing) Television is a visual medium and doesn't require much commentary. A fine observation.

Danube on iPad

Generally I look in on the Winter O's because the NFL season has just ended and I feel a yearning for some sports to watch.

This year, the prospect of being assaulted by the pomposities of the grotesque homunculus Costas makes me think I just don't have that much interest in the whole thing.

May he trip and do a face-plant into the toilet paper bin.

daddy

Katherine Englebrecht has filed an Ethics Complaint against Congressman John Lewis. I'm hearing this on the Megyn Kelly replay.

Has this been posted yet?

matt

Competing for Finland in the long range Red Army biathlon, Simo Häyhä!!!! Look him up. Iron sights. 505 comrades met Lenin in hell.

In '88 I had the pleasure of being involved with the Jamaican Bobsleigh Team. Yes, that one. I was the guy who learned how frickin racist the IBF was and how the IOC wanted to keep the Jamaicans out.We won that one. I take great pride that Samaranch hated my guts. Fascist bastard.

The Winter Olympics are more of a sham than the Summer Games. Back then it was on the cusp of irrelevance, but now it's a joke. Half pipe bong pong. Silly skiing. And the ice skating events are like watching mongoose und cobra.

My first reaction the day Nancy Kerrigan got whacked in the knee was that it was another skater.Psychotic gay ice dancers for $300, Alex.

I do love the curling and the biathlon and the downhill and the hockey. But not enough to actually watch the douches at NBC screw it all up. Would that we got the CBC feed down here. Don Cherry would be awesome.

daddy

a well executed quadruple camel toe...

LOL,

Catch-up is funL)

daddy

Well we're lucky that the Olympics aren't in Anchorage this year since after the last 2 weeks of you guys down south stealing our Polar Vortex we are virtually snowless. But never fear, on Talk Radio the Alaskan Olympics Commission said they were still stupid enough to try to put together a proposal to get the Olympics up here for the 2026 Olympics.

Ignatz

--the prospect of being assaulted by the pomposities of the grotesque homunculus Costas --

ROFL

Ignatz

Costas wasn't such an arse when he came up; when did he decide he was in the running for the Strange New Respect award?
I know it's been awhile, but I do remember kind of liking the guy at first.

Ignatz

And, good night.

daddy

Sizemore now claims he was lying about Liz Hurley having sex with Bill Clinton

So which President was she banging?

Danube on iPad

Sizemore says his charges were those of a drug-addled lunatic long ago. Except it now develops that they were made less than a year ago.

I believe Sizemore was married to Heidi Fleiss for a time, but that (as with Sid Blumenthal) there was something of a wife-beating issue in there somewhere.

Trashy people in love....

rich@gmu

didn't he flame out while working on SyFy made for cable movie projects...

...yikes and double yikes.

daddy

Speaking of Sports, who's going to be on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition for 2014?

Only one I know is Kate Upton, so that's my guess.

By tradition, the SI Swimsuit issue comes out on the second Tuesday in February so look to February 18, 2014 as the official publication date when the new issue hits newsstand nationwide.

daddy

For you guys shivering back on the east coast, I thought this post by Weatherman Joe Bastardi had a point worth posting: A Crisis of Cold

It's from down near the end, between 2 of the graphs:

Now here is what is scary to me. In talking to people in the energy industry, 89% of coal fired plants that are operating now by supplying electricity will be forced off line on Jan. 1, 2015 by EPA regulations. I want you to imagine what this winter's energy situation would be like without those plants operating. Two weeks ago, I said the pattern between Jan. 20-Feb. 5 would be a “crisis of cold.” While we see a brief break in the East this weekend, we believe a cold stormy February is on the way for the nation.

I sure hope he's wrong about those coal plant closings but I wouldn't bet on it.

rich@gmu

http://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.cfm?id=7290

that looks to be the case...Ohio looks like it has the most to retire.

morning.

rich@gmu

not sure where the 89% number comes from...eia The 27 GW of retiring capacity amounts to 8.5% of total 2011 coal-fired capacity.

but most of it is concentrated in Ohio

Captain Hate

Olympics another item that Putin delivered for Russia that Obama failed at.

The JEF's utter failure in even making the first cut on getting the Olympics was the first bit of evidence that at least some people were able to see through his garbage. Of course in dealing with the IOC, he was dealing with people at least as trashy and self serving as he is, so they were able to recognize what they were dealing with in describing how placing the games in Shitcargo was promoted only in self referential terms. I've never been so happy with a US "defeat". Rush was hilarious that day. It was like the world regained its sanity for one brief moment.

Captain Hate

I know it's been awhile, but I do remember kind of liking the guy at first.

Me too; he used to give a decent commentary on sports that wasn't top loaded with social issues. Hell, he used to broadcast for the American Basketball Association so he knows what it's like to not be in the limelight. Maybe being around Obermann ruined him.

Jane

Re: the ethics complaint on Cummings: Jim Jordan talked Englebrecht out of filing it before the hearing, saying she should give him a chance. After the hearing she filed it, as she should have given his disgusting behavior in the hearing, basically calling her a racist. He also sent her several harassing letters on official letterhead prior to the hearings.

Boy we damn well better take back the senate. These guys should all rot in hell.

Anyone else see Leno's last show?

Captain Hate

Slick looks like hot garbage in that picture with Hurley. People that call him "charismatic" are usually drug addicts like Sizemore.

Extraneus

Costas is without a doubt one of the worst.

My mother loved that man...

NK(withnewsoftware)

The Left/Media (same thing) Attacking Christie meme? Only two reasons: 1. A reflex Alinsky ting, personally attack enemies into silence; 2. Gotta change the subject. If you think about it, the Obummer Crew have eff'd up everything. Yeah sure their cronies have been paid off (lookin' at you Warren B.) and they deivered much swag to their union masters (not the union members, just the union masters), but the voters (even their own voters) are screwed. A now the Dems will pay the price; so they have to talk about anything but reality to try to save their miserable seats. So talk about traffic cones.

Marlene

We always watched the Olympics on CBC when we lived in northern Maine. CBC televises events in real time and actually shows the complete event, not edited or tape delayed. If you have are interested in biathlon,Russell Currier from Stockholm,Maine is a member of the US Olympic team.

Captain Hate

In Levin's third hour he teed off on Kerry's obsession with Israeli economic success and Susan Rice's threats against the country. He quoted extensively from this: http://www.frontpagemag.com/2014/caroline-glick/kerrys-israeli-supporters/

Marlene

Test. Morning. We always watched the Olympics on CBC when we lived in northern Maine. No tape delays or editing. If you are interested in biathlon,Russell Currier of Stockholm,Maine is on the Olympic team.

Marlene

Sorry.

narciso

I recall the cNN correspondent 'Chicago was out' that was for Rio, a sunny BladeRunneresque dystopia, but you know snorfle. you get a gist from the second to last Fast and Furious film.

Miss Marple

Good morning. Here late because I stayed up to see the last Leno show, which was good.

Oprah was even on and I managed to not turn the TV off as she only had one line in a song.

I was very touched when Leno said that after he lost his mother, then his dad, then his brother, the people at the show were his only family.

One wonders where Mavis fell in that ranking, but I took it for what was meant.

rse

Jane-given the official events I have attended in ATL over last year, I have learned that many blacks have been fed a vision that as long as capitalism exists and until equality of outcomes is achieved, the direct effects of slavery endure.

It is like a sickness. I wish people well whatever their ethnicity or the amount of melanin in their skin. People who keep telling me what I owe them are parasites and I don't like parasites regardless of their ethnicity and skin color.

I was shocked by that 1965 Bayard Ruskin essay I came across this year because it is supposedly finally happening and then now the push to communitarianism as the fulfillment of King's vision. So destructive and sad.

As an aside, it's not the white UMC parents who typically recognize something is wrong with the schools and Common Core. Most simply assume that their high property taxes in a nice neighborhood protect them. It's the black moms who are most likely to be telling me to go get 'em.

narciso

Ah yes, Lurch, Flathead and Rice, dumb, dumber and a third character to be named later.

narciso

That's a little surprising, rse, because I was alway told Levinson and company, were the ones that led King astray, but he was still of the left.

Sue

I have told Iggy to stop sharing my pictures and now Daddy has it.

I don't understand the all cal Christie post. What is it he was supposed to do?

Sue

Marlene,

I have become addicted to North Woods Law. Never wanted to visit Maine before and now I want to come up there.

Janet - the districts lie fallow, while the Capitol gorges itself

Engelbrecht said - "He went on a defamation national tour." Weaponizing government is exactly right too.

http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2014/02/dem-rep-sent-three-threatening-letters-to-conservative-activist-using-committee-letterhead-video/

This is like the March 20th Kill the Bill rally slander. Why wouldn't Rep. Cummings try it...it worked for Lewis, Cleaver, Clyburn, & Carson.
Set up a slander & then go make the rounds on TV where the worthless MFMers just give them a platform & question NOTHING.

God bless Engelbrecht.

narciso

Carlos Slim's had a piece about Deb Dubious, one of the many reasons I'm not cynical enough,
had pledged to make Stay Puft radioactive, snorfle.

Threadkiller

I sent it to daddy, Sue.

I am keeping the wardrobe malfunction video though.

rse

narciso-that's essentially what I understood too but King's later writings show a definite shift. Plus regardless of where he really stood, the perception being created is that his vision shifted fundamentally and will not be satisfied until the US has economic justice for all.

Which of course means impoverishing most of us, but that's not what gets recognized. Like all the people who wanted O'care because they believed then they too could go to the Mayo for care for free.

narciso

Well it's not terribly surprising, the SCLC didn't start on the left, but likely there was little resistance to doing so, not unlike the ANC/NAACP which Dubois was the leader.

Marlene

Sue,interesting characters live in the woods. :)

Sue

Marlene,

Indeed they do. No matter where those woods are.

Captain Hate

God bless Engelbrecht.

Oh no, Janet. We can't have people like this interfering with Repuke Central's grand election plans to take over the Senate with more gelded eunuchs who won't fight for the rights of citizens. They've been so successful in the past so people like Ms. Engelbrecht should just suck it up for the common good. Or something.

Extraneus

They're racist scum, Janet.

CBC dislikes Jarrett's message

Georgia Rep. David Scott (D), said he approached Jarrett about two nominees in particular: one who once supported a state bill to keep the Confederate battle emblem a part of Georgia’s flag, and another who led the defense of the state’s photo ID law, which Scott claims is a statute designed “to keep black folks, as much as possible, from voting.”

“I asked her specifically that they should be [withdrawn]. She just didn’t say anything,” said Scott, who did not attend the briefing on nominees but was present at a later meeting with Jarrett and the full CBC.

“Do you think George Bush would have been able to do this, or any white president would have been able to do this? No,” Scott said. “The president should have said, ‘There’s absolutely no way I want to go down in history as putting these kinds of people into federal court nominations against my own African-American [people]’ ... It’s a tragedy.”

NK(withnewsoftware)

113,000 new jobs created in January. Well below jobs needed to keep up with the census new entrants into the labor pool. Just crappy, and stocks will be clobbered. With QE ending (the Fed has no choice it can't buy anymore of this crap), stocks will be driven by corporate profits. No jobs, no profits, stocks take it in the neck. Hopefully, this lousy January number was affected by the BLS 'business birth/death' model, which detracts jobs in January, and the real payroll picture isn't this bad. But it's bad.

Btw, Reuters doesn't agree with the Top Men's progress report on digital media, why would they lie, unlike what McLuhan thought, the medium is not the message, maybe they used the same guy that Mcluhan was complaining about in Annie Hall

NK, funny thing about the jobs report... the only people answering our job ads are those who want us to get an H1B visa for them.
