NK, functional software programming (credentials have no meaning here) with experience in specific technical areas. Unfortunately, the technical areas I need are in high demand and many "experts" are really clueless when tested.

Old Lurker

We were semi joking here the other day about the government going after credit card balances.

Now that the Progs have floated the notion of using the Post Office as a bank for those who want to use it, I guess that is step #1. I can see it now "If OL can borrow money at 3% from his bank, why should the less fortunate have to pay 18% to their greedy banks?"

The scariest thing is that the headlines regarding this note only that banks are opposed. Should not every good citizen be aghast at this idea?

Patriot4Fredom

Catherine Engelbrecht - Chairwoman of True the Vote, a nonprofit election integrity organization; Founder of King Street Patriots

"After all the tyranny, all the things that have been done to my organizations, to my family and to me; many people would have quit. ... Many Americans have quit. I have heard ... that people are afraid to tell their stories because of what has or might happen to them and their families at the hands of our own government.

But know this, my experiences at the hands of this government in these last five years have made me more determined than ever to stand before you and America and say I will not retreat.

I will not surrender. I refuse to be intimidated. I will not ask for permission to exercise my constitutional rights.

I come before you today Mr. Chairman, on behalf of Americans just like me, asking for a solution to end this ugly chapter of political intimidation."

God bless you, Mrs. Engelbrecht.

Words for all of us to remember as we consider how we must reply to this lawless Obama administration.

NK(withnewsoftware)

OL-- I wasn't semi joking about that. What I said was there are two big pools of 'money' which the Feds haven't tapped yet, 401k/IRA accounts and credit card debt. With OPM running out rapidly, it's logical to anticipate that when the next financial 'crisis' hits, the Socialists will try to grab more OPM (Emmanuel's no crisis goes to waste), and those are the only big pools left. MyRA is clearly meant to be a platform to nationalize 401k/IRA accounts-- it makes no sense for anything else. Credit card balances? obviously far more remote, but these socialists have the will to try.

Jane

We need to find out how we can help Catherine Engelbrecht.

The one thing that came through to me from Jay's last show is that he hasn't changed at all from 1968. He was always a nice friendly, funny guy and still is. Not bad for a star.

Old Lurker

NK, while 401K assets are actually you know, assets, credit card balances are debts of individuals but assets to the lenders yielding double digit returns. So your thought is that the Feds will force the banks to "sell" those receivables at some to-be-determined transfer price, payable in IOU's of course, then the USPS can collect the payments on them, right? And the additional benefit to Progs is they can then offer breaks to the politically advantaged. Sorta like student loans and mortgages.

You are not crazy to be worried about that.

Janet - the districts lie fallow, while the Capitol gorges itself

We need to find out how we can help Catherine Engelbrecht.

Yes!

NK(withnewsoftware)

OL-- don't give them any ideas ;).

But seriously, the scenario you posit shows why it is vital to get a repub Senate and House to pass budgets that explicitly bar this kind of grab. Those budget resolutions will be vital in court to enjoin monstrosities like this.

Miss Marple

Old Lurker,

One of the most pernicious things about this administration is their connections to the smarty-pants money guys and the devious layers, the ones who make money by moving it, selling instruments under a re-branded name, hide the money, etc. They write the rules to suit themselves and by the time the avrage citizen finds out what's going on, their bank accounts are much smaller and they are guilty of some unknown infraction.

It's sort of like Myer Lansky's relationship to the mob.

Threadkiller

"Repeal and Replace the Budget" sounds catchy.

Old Lurker

MM do you recall that cartoon a year or two ago showing a young man talking to his father about his career plans? The kid described his desire to work for an entity that could have total control over people, their income and their assets. His father asked if he planned to work for the Mob or the Government.

NK(withnewsoftware)

It does sound catchy with persuadables. The FY '14 budget is $500M+ in the RED, even with the rich paying their 'fair share' based on the 2013 income tax and Cap Gain rate hikes. 'Repeal and replace the budget' -- I like it.

Captain Hate

Is there an actual budget? When did that happen?

Miss Marple

OL, No, but it is a spot on comment in that cartoon.

Years ago when I used to post at Free Republic, therre was a guy who had made up a marquee sign which he put at the end of every post.

It said, "The Democrat Party is a criminal enterprise."

Truer words were never posted.

NK(withnewsoftware)

Yes a Budget Resolution was passed by the House and Senate in January. It restored non-Entitlemsnt spending to 1.1T.

NK(withnewsoftware)

MissM-- I completely agree with with that. The Dem Party is a gangster organization, like the Mafia.... only without any honor.

Captain Hate

That's the first budget passed since Gaylord Focker's been President, no?

Ig, McClintock states that the wood looses much of its value in the first year and becomes worthless by the second year.

IIRC you were concerned about exactly that during the drafting of the bill.

McClintock must be reading JOM.

I need Rick Ballard to advise me on my current line of thinking: Is it possible that Boehner has rolled the Chamber of Crony Capitalists Commerce into giving them money by playing a bait and switch on immigration reform; complete with making a high profile announcement, including Super Bowl ads, only to walk it back as impossible while swimming in that sweet sweet cash? Maybe I've been too rough on him because if there's the slightest amount of truth to what I wrote, very well played.

I think that's right, CH.Now who paid off CNN to come out with the phony poll results on the day of the vote?(You really cannot be cynical enough.)

Miss Marple

narciso,

Why after the midterms? Obama won't be any more trustworthy then than he is right now. In fact, less as he will feel he has nothing to lose and must cement his legacy.

narciso

the problem, for their point of view, is they can't get the members to drink the koolaid, grape orange or whatever, of course, otoh, there is the example from Schweitzer's book, where they used the threat of a proposed tax on bank interest or somesuch as a fundraising tool, so it depends how cynical you want to be.

Jack is Back!

Test.

NK(withnewsoftware)

Budgets: I'm confident that my recollection is correct that in 2009, the Dems passed a reconciled budget resolution that included the Stimulus, PLUS the stepped up 'base line' spending. That stepped up base line spending made the dem cronies fat and happy so the Dems could avoid passing budgets in 2010, 2011, 2012 and delay 2013 to January 2014. In 2011 the sequestration was passed that reduced baseline spending to pre-2009 levels and then some, by disproportionately cutting military spending. Spending is now back at the pre-2009 baseline, by restoring most military spending, and a bit of nonmilitary, with PROMISES to cut future entitlement spending. But we all know the Red Ink doesn't come from the $1.1 TRILLION discretionary spending-- it comes from ObummerCare Medicaid expansion, Medicare, Soc Sec, farm Bill (food stamps bigAG swag), disability, interest on the Debt. Those total about $2.5T.

Captain Hate

If the objective of the last four years is to send my cynicism to eleven, Mission Accomplished.

Then he ought to know there's no place for the wood to go.
Because of the drought logging has continued non stop on private land, but the local mills are full and so it either gets shipped many miles north or, as ours was, exported.
Unfortunately federal wood can't be exported which leaves pretty much nowhere for it to go.
Most of what burnt was pine which has already blue stained which means even if they could get it to a mill they would get less for the wood than it cost to log it.
Sometimes 'let it rot' is the only real alternative.

What part of that is Elijah Cummings against?

NK(withnewsoftware)

CaptH-- Boehner's not that clever. I will fight my genetic programming to say I told you so. Weeks ago I said the immigration thing was DC Kabuki. The House leadership was telling the CoC what they paid for their members to hear about visas in reform (see henry above), but Ryan/Boehner knew they didn't have the votes in the House, or in the electorate, so it would die. Rubio came up with the 'it's Obummer's fault meme' because Obummer can't be trusted to enforce enforcement. Ryan then Boehner used that meme, so it dies-- for now. The CoC knew they were being played-- for now. They'll be back in 2015. Useless DC Kabuki.*

* I told you so.

Captain Hate

And TK hits me with a Thatcheresque "don't go wobbly". Now I've really got to think about this.

NK(withnewsoftware)

CaptH-- :)

Captain Hate

NK, in your rush to say "I told you so" aren't you really saying that Boehner is clever?

narciso

that Joplin line, about 'freedom being nothing left to lose' seems on point.

narciso

'the lady's not for turning' to quote another line, from the Iron Lady.

NK(withnewsoftware)

Not at all-- politician taking money from friendly lobbyists, with both knowing that the lobbyists' members are wasting the money is an ancient DC tradition. Nothing clever about that. In truth, the CoC is telling its members that 'we'll get this done next year' when repubs control House and senate and Obummer is desperate to make ANY deal. The lobbyists got their fees now, they'll worry about next year next year. What WOULD be clever, is if Boehner used this 'shelving' immigration to get TP votes to repeal the Insurer bailouts, as a condition for Debt extension. THAT would be clever.

Account Deleted

CH,

It wasn't about picking the Bathhouse Billionaire's pockets. Boehner advanced the immigration memo just prior to the SOTU, perhaps taking one attack paragraph out of the BOzo gargle. He has now, very regretfully (snicker), killed the idea due to further reflection upon BOzo's character, given the fact HE LIES.

It's not bad theater but it wasn't meant to assuage the Northeastern money dedicated to Goldilocks solutions involving keeping vultures in the state of obesity to which they have become accustomed.

NK(withnewsoftware)

What RickB said... wait?... what?

Captain Hate

Welp I agree that would be clever.

NK, I don't want H1B visas... they are a suckers bet if you are not CronyCorp. (From what I see, the sucker pays to get the visa if any are left, then CronyCorp hires the person anyway).

"What part of that is Elijah Cummings against?"
It is my belief that he is not against any of it.

Ignatz

Boehner, IMO is pretty effective with the pwer he has.
One reason is because he is a DC veteran insider and knows how to play the games they play there. Unfortunately those games require cynical feints and ploys and when you play on that field you will look principless and sometimes incompetent as you turn on a dime and refuse to do something you were never going to do in the first place.
The fact is Barry and the Dems have gotten almost nothing they have wanted. Why do you think Barry is running around waving his pen and phone?
He's certainly no genius and you are left wondering what principles he does have but seems to me we could do a lot worse; Denny Hastert for example.

clarice

The NAACP did not start that way, it preached assimilation into the American Society, Dubois left the organization because of it in the 1930's. The NAACP was a mostly Jewish organization, just 7 of its original 60 members were black with Dubois being the only member of the board.

It was not until 1975 when the first black CEO was elected for the NAACP. The Civil Rights movement transformed the organization into what it is today.

NK(withnewsoftware)

Henry-- there are alot of businesses (especially BIGCRONYCORP) who do want a cheap and easy fix through expanded H1 visas. That's the reason CoC pushes reform, it's what those members want and pay for.

NK(withnewsoftware)

Ignatz-- I think that's a fair and accurate take on Boehner. He's no genius, but hey he understands that, a rare bit of politician self-awareness. The best thing I can say about Boehner is he kept his 2010 election bottomline promise-- no more bad things. he's been quite true to that for over 3 years. Now can he get something positive done with using the debt Limit to pass bailout repeal?

NK(withnewsoftware)

'pass baailout repeal'-- in the House, it never gets through the Senate.

NK,

I don't believe there will be a push for a risk corridor bailout. Humana has 4% of the individual market and made a high end projection of $450 million (receivable in '15) due from the risk corridor. The implication is $12-$15 billion would be disbursed and the CBO is already projecting a net positive offset to BOzo's last minute fiddle with existing plans (page 112,CBO report).

The insurers sold themselves for access to management of Medicare/Medicaid disbursements. They aren't going to risk their place at the new, brimming, trough by rattling their begging cups too loudly.

bori-what I did not understand until last 8 months or so was that my understanding of civil rights involving legal equality were in fact not the common definition being preached.

The dominant view now is that civil rights will not be met until economic justice has been imposed by governments and we have a full fledged welfare state with a planned economy.

The civil rights come from government being in charge and able, as Van Jones put it, to dictate who gets the jobs, where, and with how much compensation. The part about it being impossible long term gets omitted.

rse,

I think that has been an evolution within the Civil Rights movement. Legal equality was thought to equal economic equality, but it requires a change of attitudes and effort. After years of proclaiming and adopting a victim status to promulgate change, it has become difficult to switch tracks and preach an uplifting message. Especially as the government step in to "equalize" things; the
War on Poverty, Affirmative action, etc. the actions meant to fix the past grievances and achieve the economic equality sought.

Maintaining the victimology helped to maintain the government faucet open, but also meant that a segment of the community will always be dependant on government. The earlier message of economic equality through legal equality was replaced to one of equality through government intervertion.
