“Clearly, someone out there thinks that it’s just too risky to put a woman behind that desk, that we’re not ready yet,” wrote Ophira Eisenberg Friday in The Guardian. “I'm not sure who that someone is, because I think the audience is there, so it must be someone powerful – an old-school executive, a nervous sponsor, a lazy senior makeup artist. Or maybe that someone just doesn't want to pay to remodel the host’s bathroom.”
Not everyone is mourning. Writing in Slate last week, Amanda Hess said that late-night television talk shows are “stuck in the past” and that hosting jobs are often thankless, one-dimensional roles.
“Late night talk shows are celebrity self-promotion vehicles packaged with broad, sanitized humor that is highly topical but rarely actually relevant. They’re designed to be funny to everyone, and hilarious to no one. Letterman was the notable exception to this rule,” Ms. Hess writes.
At least she's honest. It has nothing to do with skin color or gender for the whiners. They want a vulgar left wing creep to offend anyone who isn't a vulgar left wing creep and they're afraid Colbert won't be quite enough of either.
Will Paul Schaffer stay on as the musical director? Not that I care but he was a fairly talented musician who I believe was responsible for getting decent talent on the show, overcoming the gap toothed perv's nonexistent interviewing skills and unwillingness to spend any time to become familiar with the music which was being played.
I was pointing on the Horde's Book thread, keying off a Ambrose bio of Nixon, how there are few objective tomes on the subject, Watergate has to be 'eleventy', so everything that came before they have to poison the well,
some recommended Aitken's bio of him, I referred to a lesser known work, the Contender by Irwin Gellman,
Announcer: "Ladies and Gentleman, Welcome to the Late Show with Steven Colbert!"
Announcer: Here's Stephen!
Colbert: "Sarah Palin"
Colbert: "George Bush"
Colbert: "Rush Limbaugh"
Colbert: "President Obama"
Colbert: "Thank you, you've been a great audience this opening night. Please come back everyday weekday Night for the next 20 to 30 years to read the same signs all over again. Good night!"
Yes, I saw that. He wasn't an easy person to write about especially because after offending all the usual suspects, he decides to pick off the remainders with wage and price controls and forming the EPA. I thought at the time making overtures to China was politically brilliant and strategically sound as a tactic during the Cold War. Since we can't go back in time and undo that, I don't think anything has happened subsequently to make me feel otherwise although I'm open to any discouraging words.
A member of the Horde was defending him as a fighter, which we seem to be lacking these days. The Watergate snafu showed that Repubs would cave if the heat became too hot, unlike the donks even though the MFM will never turn the burner to anything exceeding "Low".
I haven't seen a late night show in 30 years. I think the last one was a Johnny Carson one which was his last night. Even when the kerfuffle over Sarah by Letterman, I had to watch the YouTube account to see what the issue was all about. This guy Letterman should have been fired or Sarah's husban should have tracked him down and slapped the shit out of him for his comments.
BTW, I am off to bed. Big day tomorrow. Frederick starts Tennis Camp at Future Stars. Then on Wednesday its meet up with tonto and Harry in East Hampton. All Long Islanders or New Yorkers who want to make the trip from hell can join us. Its going to be around 10am.

You'd think being local that Rodriguez would have given him a Louisville slugger in the junk, but apparently A-Roid doesn't mind the suggestion that he statutorially raped 14-year olds.
I used to watch Letterperv by recording him with a videorecorder and watching it the next day. It was funny for a while but his humor, what there was of it, didn't have much staying power with me. Like I said before, he's just a terrible interviewer and after a while, why care? I used to enjoy how Sandra Bernhard would make him nervous back when there were a few unbent cards in her deck, which was a long time ago; and once Crispin Glover had a meltdown that's still not been adequately explained. But he just wasn't funny imo.
When the weekend field is cut to an odd number of players, a playing 'marker' is added to the last group to keep their score and pace the play. ANGC member Jeff Knox, age 51, is the designated marker and on Saturday, beat his playing partner Rory McIlroy 70 to 71. Knox, an Augusta native, holds the course record from the Member's Tees with a sporty 61.
That was probably back around the time, Hudson Hawk came out, which all agree was a consensual hallucination that scarred everyone involved, including Danny Aiello,
It seems Crispin seems to have taken the same tack with that film, he's more then a touch eccentric, I don't recall when that particular Elmore Leonard tale, was made into a film, although this season of justified, had touches of that particular book,

1) An Oil Slick has just been discovered in the current general search area. They collected a large enough sample of that oil slick to send it to have it analyzed to see if it matches the sort of oil that would have been on the airplane. Considering that oil still leaks from the USS Arizona Battleship, sunk in Pearl harbor in 1941, it is not out of the question that oil might be slowly bubbling up from this missing airliner's engines 38 days after the supposed crash. I'm guessing each engine had approximately 25-40 quarts per engine.
2) No more pings have been received in the last 6 days, so they have decided the Pinger's batteries are probably dead. They are now halting that listening bit of the search and are now going thru the process of lowering the remote BlueFin submersible to start the very slow process of using it's equipment to continue the search. I didn't get a decent idea of what exactly its search equipment entails, simply that they think it is going to be very slow going from here on out.
The other day, after reading the night/early morning posts by "the band," it struck me that this is like Bar San Calisto near John Carrol University (somebody mentioned it the other day) in the Trastevere neighborhood in Rome, which starts the day with the workmen getting their coffee and breakfast, followed by the office workers, then mothers who have dropped their children at school chatting over coffee, then the college students, then lunch by the various groups in rotation, then the beverage choice switches to alcohol, and the clientele again changes as the hours pass.
The hour determines the function.
Time go get ready to do the data entry work for the state.
Such a shame that Letterman became a sour and unfunny man. I remember him when he was the weather guy here on one of the local channels, and I always enjoyed his descriptions ("Hailstones the size of canned hams.").
For a long time he kept that irreverent Midwestern humor, but some time after he moved to New York he began to take his opinion seriously, and became the grumpy old geezer he made fun of.
This is what happens to liberals who go far left. They become unhappy people and cannot understand why people don't want to hang around with them. I think Letterman will end up a recluse.
Good morning JOM from the south fork of the east end of Long Island where the sun is up but kids are still in bed.
Looks like the Hamptons meet up is on for this Wednesday at Pierre's in Bridgehampton at 1000hrs. If that changes will let you know. I know it's a haul for the City crowd and I don't know if Peter can make it but all are welcome. So far, it's tonto, Harry and the JiB family.
I don't know if it's been reported elsewhere but Levin on Friday said that the JEF, during his visit to Fort Hood, refused to meet with the victims of the Nadal Hassan shooting, specifically a black soldier who wanted to discuss how he and his fellow victims had been treated. Again, a real opposition party would be shouting this from the rooftops. He bugged out later to meet with swells at a fundraiser and Al Sharpton's shakedown clowns but doesn't have time to meet with soldiers wounded in this act of "workplace violence".
Shocking that Kansas shooter was influenced by anti-Israel writings published by The Nation, Is Katranny vanden Trustfund still on the panel on that ABC gab show that Steffy moderates? Will she be grilled about this?

Watched the last hour of the Khadafy docu last night. It was professional and polished, accuracy? I couldn't say, they relied on Khadafy's political victim's for the most gruesome details (victims plus a german rocket maker and his wife who provided rocket technology in the 80s) so who knows. The filmmaker seemed standard issue leftwing, anti-USA/Western pols and anti-'corporate greed' -- interviewing Valerie Plame? What a useless piece of goods she is. Interestingly, they seemed ambivalent about GWB, begrudingly acknowledging that GWB convinced Khadafy that he was next to go over his nuke/Chem-bio weapons, and Khadafy gave up those programs and paid Pan Am 103 victims. Then they criticised Blair for pushing the Shell deal in Libya as part of Khadafy's 'rehabilitation' to end sanctions. Well, that was the point of sanctions wasn't it, to end the programs and pay the victims. I wish GWB had been around in 2009 to do the same thing the the Mullahs when the Persian people tried to overthrow them. The most interesting interview was the NYC photog who took that portrait of Khadafy at the UN in Oct 2009. His observations of Khadafy the man at the end seemed insightful.
If pagar hadn't linked it here I'd still be blissfully unaware of it. Shocking that Pat Buchanan gets mentioned also; the sooner the Republican party gets him outside the "big tent", the better. No wonder MSPMS trots him out at every opportunity when they aren't swooning over Huntsman on the other side.
Speaking of that Khadafy docu: my overal impression was that there is no difference between the Khadafy and Obummer personalities. The only difference in their conduct is that Obummer doesn't have the absolute power Khadafy had over an ambivalent Bedouin people. Let's never become the USA equivalent of the ambivalent migartory bedouin and let this corrupt wannabe tyrant and his cronies increase their power and corruptions.
So a question? This isn't the first time the regime has Photoshopped their propaganda photos. Then why is it so inconceivable that Obama's birth certificate is fake. There's Photoshopped evidence of that too. And how un-Presidential is it for Obama to keep bringing the topic up? The only reason he does so is to employ the Alinsky tactic to call anyone "crazy" who mentions his Kenyan birth (even though Obama himself mentioned it many times). In the below video clip, mentioning the birth certificate topic doesn't even make sense in the context of making the point against photo voter ID. So is Obama admitting that there are other forms of ID than a passport? And he is also admitting that no one knows where his birth certificate is...
Good. Let CBS get maximum grief over this.

No kidding. I saw the image and then scrolled down to find the one with Harry and Nancy until I realized I'd already seen it. :)

Iggy-
i have this vague recollection of a thread, going on into the small hours of the morning, among you, dot, and weedave and it seemed like one of you admitted to being the perp.
my comment is withdrawn. sorry meant no offense.
Posted by: rich@gmu | April 13, 2014 at 11:43 PM
my apologies again TK.

what do think that GT 500 going under the hammer in PA is going to fetch? I'm thinking 200K
they also have a 71 Ranchero GT (351, a pity) under the hammer too.
(a 2012 Escape is under the hammer, just 90 miles)

DD,
Coming to JOM must be torture for you. I wonder which one hurts you the most?
That JOMers have and enjoy their lives? Or, that the only time you are having fun is when you are drinking with hookers?
Perhaps your pecker fell-off and now you can just enjoy yourself?
Posted by: bori | April 14, 2014 at 12:04 AM
As I said a very long time ago, I recognize DD's posts within a very few words, and immediately stop reading and do not respond to them. I have no idea what he has been saying, and don't care. I am not DD.

I would blow my f****g brains out after 2 beers with you chumps.
Since no one has offered yet, may I be the first to ask you to join me for drinks. I will bring the 2 beers that you referenced . . .
Posted by: I don't often have drinks with drunken, foul-mouthed leftists, but when I do, I bring the beer they asked for | April 14, 2014 at 01:32 AM
Pointing out my idiocy as some kind of flaw is itself slightly moronic because my low IQ is actually a testament to the greatness of Democracy. The notion that even the lowliest person has a say in their own quality of life through the ballot is a truly awesome thing to behold
Who is DD??????Who gives a fuck? I'm not as important as the millions of people I represent- a growing racial minority on the cusp of becoming a political Superbase that is intent on crushing you in ways you can barely imagine.
We are going to do things to you and your families.......things that would make a Billy goat puke. We will dismantle your right to own a weapon and once you relinquish your firearm we will outlaw your religion. 'Defense' and 'faith' are the corner stones of any resistance, once they topple the rest is gravy.
We'll have the pick of your women, your wealth, your homes, your cars, your jewelry........and your males will serve us in the fields, wherever they're needed....even in the bedroom.

Malaysian Airline Search Update:

Rich--I'm with you. But who is it???

Captain Hate, I have just about given up on having anyone who will speak up for us.
The ones who do are marginalized and ignored. The rest are cowards.
I have almost gotten past even being upset. It is now what I expect.
Sad days.

Hope you will be able to post more pix of your visit.

Are the pix on your computer too large to fit?
Are you having a problem with the URL's for the pix ?
I'd be glad to offer some help if I could get a sense of what isn't working for you . . .

Larry Kudlow goes back to the basics that made me respect him starting in the 80s when he was a guest on Louis Rukheyer's show, and says something sensible. The Yellen-LeGrande duo will be remembered as a disaster a few years from now: http://www.moneynews.com/newswidget/janet-yellen-federal-reserve-economy-inflation/2014/04/11/id/565167/?promo_code=12390-1&utm_source=12390PJ_Media&utm_medium=nmwidget&utm_campaign=widgetphase1
