How about some "strict liability" standards for law enforcement (and other government officials)?
If something bad happens on your watch, you take the fall, end of story. Unfair? Maybe.
But as citizens, we are all subject to a whole range of laws that are strict liability and which carry not just civil but criminal penalties. You don't have to intend any wrongdoing, or even know that you're violating a law, or you can even be trying to comply - but with a lot of laws, none of that matters.
So, in other news, I learned this morning that the gentleman who lives directly across the hall from me is a member of the House of Represntatives (I will not name him, because Zuckerberg/Schmidt/NSA).
He was very friendly, and I wished him a safe trip home to his district.
I then told my wife, and she went to his website. When she saw his photo, she informed me that the Distinguished Gentleman is the same person who argued with my mother-in-law because he couldn't grasp that the cash-card machine in the laundry room does not take $1 bills despite her repeated attempts to explain it to him.
I can't help but think that this explains a lot about the way Congress works...

On the drive home I caught part of an interview this morning on Local Talk with Meade Treadwell, one of our Repub's up here running for Senate against Dem Mark Begich.
The local host sez that the current polls have moved the Alaska Senate Election from "leans Democrat" to "Toss Up." Treadwell did a very good job of discussing the actions of the Russians up here in the Arctic and Polar regions and contrasting that with what the Obama Administration is failing to do up here. It strikes me that all our eyes are focused on what Russia is doing in Ukraine and Lativa, but paying zero attention to their strong moves up in the Arctic. Treadwell sez they are definitely going after control of the Arctic, particularly regarding shipping and resource exploitation, while we dither about Polar Bears.
Treadwell, at least in regards to what is going on geopolitically in the Arctic, comes across very well informed. He brought that into the discussion of "Why Begich needs to be replaced" quite effectively. Whether that will find any purchase with voters I can't say, but it was nice to hear a serious discussion of Russia's moves up here while our State Dept and Defense Dept dither.
I believe Treadwell is for the LOST Treaty but that did not come up in what I heard today.
It will also be interesting to see what the new ownership of the ADN produces regarding Electioneering. The Alaska Dispatch Blog is on the Left, and hates Palin ferociously, but it's reporters are much better at digging into stories than the cut and paste ADN, and even tho' they are Left they have often gone after Begich for things he has or has not done, whereas the ADN never runs anything but puff pieces on Begich.
My guess at the moment on ousting Begich waffles between pessimistic and "Too Close To Call", but Treadwell was encouraging. He handled himself well and was an adult.
The faketivist event you were trying to remember might have been the kerfuffle a few years ago when the Mayor of Mt Vernon was going to give the key to the city to home town boy, Glenn Beck.
I remember that KOMO (?) sent a chopper up there to document the massive protest. The photog had the lie in the gutter and shoot a tight shot up to get all TWO protesters and their signs full frame and not disclose the vast emptiness around them.
Yeah cc, I loved the "we'll have to wait for her book to come out". Nothing says incredibly awesome current event like having to read about it in an autobiographical account.
About the Nevada rancher and the turtles. One thing that is not being said is that the Fish and Wildlife Bureau has been relocating the turtles from the south and west Mojave because of the big solar plants have been killing them.
Not only is the plants, making the area much hotter, it is also killing the plants and utilizing the little water available to the turtles.
This area where the ranchers use to graze the cattle is isolated and on the east side of the Mojave, away from the Solar plants with the city of Las Vegas between them. But, the cattle would feed on the sparse grass in the area that is necessary for the turtles relocation.
So to protect the Solar Plants and the Dem cronies that own them from the backlash that the killing of the turtles is causing, they need to evict the rancher and his cattle. That way they can continue to relocate the turtles to that area.
I have a hard time putting together killing turtles and solar plants. PV plants are basically massive carports. The tortoises of which I used to own one when a lad, would love the shade.
The only danger would be those evil green technicians cleaning and repairing the solar farms.

Happy Birthday Stephanie!
Your recent vacation and plans for your day sound like fun and i would love to be there ,pushing a wheelbarrow and partaking of the brisket and beer. My husband's birthday is also today so we will be celebrating tonight. I will be attending a wedding next year at this time in Atlanta. Would love to meet some JOMers while there.
Holder is as sensitive to criticism as Baby Bammy. Both can dish it out but cannot take on the chin because they have none:holder} or they have their chin raised so high in arrogance that any insult misses it.
When Holder said to Goehlpert ,ver y disrespectfully, I might add"You don't want to go there BUDDY" he revealed all we need to know about his lack of respect for Congress and hisreal lack of character. This is a bad man. He needs to be cashierd yesterday.
I have CSpan on as background noise. Pat Toomey just introduced legislation requiring background checks on teachers, citing one school that help a molester/teacher find a new job, where he became the principal and raped and murdered a 12 year old kid. Then he cited the fact that since January teachers have molested 130 kids.
That was followed by Tom Harkin objecting to the legislation.
Not only is the issue one that we're on the right side of (although I'm not sure that federal legislation for local school districts is where we want to have this fight), but it's turnabout for the dems.
But this is also where we need a big media microphone to amplify the message: Republicans propose a law to stop pedophiles from raping and killing children, and Democrats oppose it. We need the media infrastructure to keep that message going, so that not just Harkin, but every Dem, has to answer why they're in favor of protecting child molesters.
Let them be the ones who have to fumble for a complex answer as to why the proposed bill isn't a good idea, or might have unintended consequences, while our side stands by and asks, over and over again, why the Democrats are engaged in a War on Children.
lyle:
I love that comment from PJMedia!
Obama and Holder are experts at sweeping everything under the rug and pretending it doesn't exist. They also are always uninformed or clueless as often as seems to be necessary. Dysfunction will always find and associate with dysfunction.
Man, how a little par 3 (the 12th at Augusta) can take the wind out the sails of the leaderboard. Unbelieveable. Then 13 has been a picnic today either and its the shortest par 5 in the majors.
Don't you love it when Iggy talks dirty like at 11:12 (on previous thread)?
So here is a question, speaking of Browsers. I use Chrome (out of the box, no options) on a PC. Works fine for me.
For the last two weeks and only at JOM, I can be reading merrily along with my cursor safely parked well away from any sidebar ads when out of the blue an audio advertisement starts blaring from my speakers and a little speaker symbol appears on the JOM tab. Usually I just quickly mute the speakers but it ticks me off.
Concur, TC.
Used to love her on Merv Griffin.
Talented guitarist and truly witty.
And she had a real spine. There was some minor actor on with her one time and he made some insulting comment about her sister and he very nearly needed a testicular transplant by the time she was done.
It wouldn't shock me in the least if CBS made the decision thinking that Colbert is actually his on-air persona, and they think they will attract moderates and conservatives to the network.
OL: I used to use Chrome only for live streaming Bret Baier news (it airs 3 PM west coast time) while at work. Then, out of the blue, they started showing ads during the breaks at full volume (they were not Fox News ads, either. So, I stopped using Chrome for that purpose and returned to Firefox where it never happened, ever. It is Chrome (Google) doing it I think.
James I doubt it will get any press at all. And another republican (I forget who) got up and made the same objection you did - Congress should not be setting the rules for schools.
Well, the tortoises might enjoy the shade below the solar farm in NV but the birds and bugs topside seem to be having a little less fun:
"Streamers" being the term employed for the combusting winged beasties unfortunate enough to take wing over the "mega trap" of flaming death it beams toward the collecting towers.
I agree that the US Senate should not be legislating school background checks (or anything else for local schools) That said, to renew my USSF Referee Badge, which includes youth games, my background check has to be kept up to date. I agree with that requirement, and local schools would be crazy to hire teachers or any school staff without background checks.
Ignatz-- so after they somehow miss the Wind Farm chopper blades, migrating birds now have to navigate beams of death. Have the 'Greens' no empathy for our feathered friends?
Those green dumbasses resemble their commie heroes who dumped nuclear waste willy-nilly in the Ural mountains until one of our infrared spy satellites noticed a huge hot spot. Oops.
Re my 2:33, what's the high/low on when Babs Boxer and Ed Markey write to the BLM expressing their intense concern for bats and other winged denizens nocturnal?
If you're a golf fan, I promise you there ain't nothing better than sitting on the grass at Augusta National with a couple of pimiento cheese sandwiches and an ice cold Heineken while watching those guys smash drives and finesse putts.
One of the rare things in life that can't be oversold. You can listen to all your buddies tell you how hilly the course is, how perfect the grass is, how tall the pines are, how loud the crowds are - doesn't matter. There's an energy and beauty there that beats it all. And it never gets old. It is magical.
Maryrose, we'd love to have you for our shindig! And happy birthday to Mr Maryrose.
My parents sent me a card (and cash- woot) that has a husband and wife fishing in a boat with the husband holding up a tiny fish - the caption is "that's got to be a good twelve inches" with the wife muttering "that explains a few things" inside it reads "it's your birthday? THAT's HUGE"
We've managed to make it to Thursday out west, TM. Thanks for being open.

Then he cited the fact that since January teachers have molested 130 kids.
That was followed by Tom Harkin objecting to the legislation.
Amazing.

Jane, that's perfect.

Adam Scott -4 and leading the masters 1st round (still early.) He loses the anchor next January, right? Time is now for these anchor putters.

Oh, maryrose, you're far too circumspect and polite. Your little apothegm might better be phrased:
Criminality will always find and associate with criminality.

Cross posted since I did not see the new thread:
Don't you love it when Iggy talks dirty like at 11:12 (on previous thread)?
So here is a question, speaking of Browsers. I use Chrome (out of the box, no options) on a PC. Works fine for me.
For the last two weeks and only at JOM, I can be reading merrily along with my cursor safely parked well away from any sidebar ads when out of the blue an audio advertisement starts blaring from my speakers and a little speaker symbol appears on the JOM tab. Usually I just quickly mute the speakers but it ticks me off.
Thoughts anyone?

Concur, TC.
Used to love her on Merv Griffin.
Talented guitarist and truly witty.
And she had a real spine. There was some minor actor on with her one time and he made some insulting comment about her sister and he very nearly needed a testicular transplant by the time she was done.

Re Colbert replacing the gap toothed perv...

The smidgens are coming home to roost.
Now that is just great!!

LOL.
