I doubt I will be working through Ta-Nehisi Coates 15,000 word essay making the case for slavery reparations, or a conversation about reparations, or something.
However, I can take a few quick hits and cheap shots. From an excerpt at Legal Insurrection let me pick up on this:
The popular mocking of reparations as a harebrained scheme authored by wild-eyed lefties and intellectually unserious black nationalists is fear masquerading as laughter. Black nationalists have always perceived something unmentionable about America that integrationists dare not acknowledge—that white supremacy is not merely the work of hotheaded demagogues, or a matter of false consciousness, but a force so fundamental to America that it is difficult to imagine the country without it….
"Fear masquerading as laughter"? Substitute "hope" for fear and BINGO! Ten years ago I was hoping Al Sharpton would shatter the Democratic Party with his reparations message, so now I am Keeping Hope Alive - no time like the present for Mr. Coates and the Dem Dream-On Team.
And as to the notion that "white supremacy is... a force so fundamental to America that it is difficult to imagine the country without it", we need to alert the NY Times editors, who let this piece run just a few months ago:
What Drives Success?
A SEEMINGLY un-American fact about America today is that for some groups, much more than others, upward mobility and the American dream are alive and well. It may be taboo to say it, but certain ethnic, religious and national-origin groups are doing strikingly better than Americans overall.
Indian-Americans earn almost double the national figure (roughly $90,000 per year in median household income versus $50,000). Iranian-, Lebanese- and Chinese-Americans are also top-earners. In the last 30 years, Mormons have become leaders of corporate America, holding top positions in many of America’s most recognizable companies. These facts don’t make some groups “better” than others, and material success cannot be equated with a well-lived life. But willful blindness to facts is never a good policy.
Jewish success is the most historically fraught and the most broad-based. Although Jews make up only about 2 percent of the United States’ adult population, they account for a third of the current Supreme Court; over two-thirds of Tony Award-winning lyricists and composers; and about a third of American Nobel laureates.
The most comforting explanation of these facts is that they are mere artifacts of class — rich parents passing on advantages to their children — or of immigrants arriving in this country with high skill and education levels. Important as these factors are, they explain only a small part of the picture.
Today’s wealthy Mormon businessmen often started from humble origins. Although India and China send the most immigrants to the United States through employment-based channels, almost half of all Indian immigrants and over half of Chinese immigrants do not enter the country under those criteria. Many are poor and poorly educated. Comprehensive data published by the Russell Sage Foundation in 2013 showed that the children of Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese immigrants experienced exceptional upward mobility regardless of their parents’ socioeconomic or educational background.
Take New York City’s selective public high schools like Stuyvesant and Bronx Science, which are major Ivy League feeders. For the 2013 school year, Stuyvesant High School offered admission, based solely on a standardized entrance exam, to nine black students, 24 Hispanics, 177 whites and 620 Asians. Among the Asians of Chinese origin, many are the children of restaurant workers and other working-class immigrants.
Merely stating the fact that certain groups do better than others — as measured by income, test scores and so on — is enough to provoke a firestorm in America today, and even charges of racism. The irony is that the facts actually debunk racial stereotypes.
There are some black and Hispanic groups in America that far outperform some white and Asian groups. Immigrants from many West Indian and African countries, such as Jamaica, Ghana, and Haiti, are climbing America’s higher education ladder, but perhaps the most prominent are Nigerians. Nigerians make up less than 1 percent of the black population in the United States, yet in 2013 nearly one-quarter of the black students at Harvard Business School were of Nigerian ancestry; over a fourth of Nigerian-Americans have a graduate or professional degree, as compared with only about 11 percent of whites.
I guess those we devil whites can distinguish Nigerians from natives, or something, and don't object to yellow skin despite our nuking of Japan and our unpopular wars in Korea and Vietnam. Baffling.
Well, I would say that. Half my family tree came from Ireland in the early 1900 and were closer to being slaves than owning them. The other half of the family tree had quite a few limbs pruned fighting for the North in the Civil War, but whatever - I can't wait to find out what size check I should write to some recent immigrant from Jamaica.
I believe in reparations for us white early American descentdents that had to put up with the hardship fo establishising this great country. At least so far.

Obama can executive order all he wants. Immigrants who have done the process correctly or those holding green cards will not be pleased. I expect this type of over-reach on his part will only end badly for him and his leftist party.

The Brown case was for injuctive relief. No damages. Irreparable injury.
The calculation of such damages, proof of individual injury and a legal basis on which to assess today's taxpayers would seem impossible.
So, Congress can ladle out more. But, if that were the end of it, perhaps it would be worth the effort.
I would want signed releases.

God Bless the West for having saved so much of human antiquity from such imbecilic barbarians, yet "When I became the NASA Administrator...he (President Obama) charged me with three things: One was that he wanted me to re-inspire children to want to get into science and math, that he wanted me to expand our international relationships, and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with predominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math, and engineering.

Once every couple of months she would send in illustrations to earn some money.

daddy--just got an email asking for money to support Sarah Palin for Senate in Alaska.
Anonamom,
I would save your money. From where I sit I believe it is impossible for Sarah Palin ever to win another elective office in Alaska. She has been successfully painted as an embarrassment, and people would be loathe to vote for her simply to prevent the rest of the country from looking at Alaskan's as ignorant rubes.
Currently there are 3 Republican candidates in the race against Begich.
1) Dan Sullivan has the backing of the RNC and has the best numbers currently against Begich, which is why the out of state Begich money is running continual smear ads against Sullivan on TV and radio. I don't see any Begich ads running against any of the other 2 Repub candidates, therefore they view Sullivan as their prime opponent.
2) Mead Treadwell is the current Lt Governor and is somewhat of a local favorite (single dad raising 3 kids) and for a while he had slightly better polling numbers than Sullivan, but he stumbled a bit in a debate a few months back by accusing Begich of supporting a Carbon Tax (which he roundabout does) but since it wasn't as clear as Treadwell made it sound and has plausible deniability, the ADN and Begich and all the state media went after Treadwell and slightly diminished him, and that may have been why the RNC put their support behind Sullivan.
3) Third guy is Joe Miller, Sarah's pick last time, and from what I see his numbers are falling thru the floor in regards to Begich, or to either of the other 2 Repub candidates. I think Miller's numbers are about what Sarah would get if she ran again up here---down in the low teens at best.
In my view Sarah seriously running would be handing the seat over to Begich. I cannot believe that the outfit trying to get funds to draft Sarah is an in-state outfit. If it is, IMHO they are seriously deluded.

The tortious act predates the hallucination known as shariah and the interest rate applicable at the time of the commission of the act should apply. The only matter left to determine is whether agricultural or commercial rates should be used as there was no maritime aspect involved. I believe commercial rates should apply due to the victims having been primarily engaged in construction and the manufacture of bricks. Let's just agree to 12% and run the spread sheets.

The merits of the Founders' intent regarding hyphenization remains unaddressed, as of course it will continue to be.
Perhaps some point was to be made in the original post, but it is certain that we will never know what that point was. We do know that there are loons who communicate with the Founders via Ouija board concerning every manner of arcane issue, but the Ouija Mystic can never share the basis of his insight with the disciples.

Maria Cantwell (Dimwit-Washington), leading the effort to drum up other dumbasses in the Senate to hector Dan Snyder, has a high school in her state, 90% Aboriginal American, with the nickname "Redskins" which has adamantly refused to change the name which they regard as a point of pride. Excellent knowledge of constituents imo.

At the very least I want equal rights. If atheists can be offended by crosses or if someone is offended by seeing a Bible or a “One nation under God, indivisible” pin...
then I'm offended by seeing a Muslim head scarf. I'm offended by seeing a totem pole or a ying/yang symbol. I'm offended by the term 'mother nature'.
Either outlaw everything, or, OR....let's go back to FREEDOM.

Capn, as a good and dutiful libtard, I must point out to my fellow LIBTARDS, that NO ONE is a NATIVE. We are all a result of the same BIG BANG.

Capn EXXXXXCELLENT point. So the peeps that Libs want to protect from offense, say that they are not offended and are proud to be called REDSKINS and it's on the floor of the Senate.
And on the other hand, blacks/rappers et al, are ALLOWED TO CALL THEMSELVES....NIGGER, NIGGA etc.
Discuss.

@JiB: Really? It's a pretty nice place, and they have a lot of 'Swampers' memorabilia in their lounge, but not sure why they would be advertising down your way in Florida. Odd. You are, of course, welcome to come on up and give 'er a whirl!

I think reparations are a great idea! However, the Native Americans have to be first in line and are due a check at least of factor of ten greater than any slave descendent. And as a 1/16th, or maybe a 1/32nd, Comanche, I want my check now!
I also promise to never say another disparaging word about you evil honkies! Hey you palefaces, get off my
lawnland!Be right back, gotta go download the 458 Italia Spyder configurator...

I absolutely believe blacks are owed reparations.
Every black kid who had to grow up in a home broken by the left wing welfare plantation or in a neighborhood full of left wing promoted drugs and left wing tolerated crime and violence, living in left wing created tenements deserves some smug white lefty's house, job, car and wife.
Then the lefty can go live in the utopia he loves to build for others far, far out of his sight and mind.

We could just give them San Francisco, Ig. I'd call that a win-win.
Posted by: Beasts of England | May 23, 2014 at 01:12 AM
Do the NATIVE AMERICANS who butchered other NATIVE AMERICANS owe reparations???
Just wondering?

Give em Berkshire Hathaway and Quantum Fund.

You're not reading something correctly, Gus. Didn't you know that all NA's were peaceful hunter/gatherers, living in harmony with the land and with one another? I don't even think
theywe owned weapons...Posted by: Beasts of England | May 23, 2014 at 01:29 AM
You can have my BRK.A when you pry my cold dead hands off of it, Steph!

LOL. I just picked some companies that are primarily controlled by libs. Add in all the solar companies, too. And that wacky enviro lib's company. Surely those champions of wealth redistribution, Buffett and Soros would have no problems with my choices would they?
We could give the academic endowments a 20% haircut and give that to them, too. NO problems with that either, right?
Put their money where their mouths are.

If this is about slavery and reparations, where's Mochelle and the WhiteHouse's twitter tag:
#Reparations For Our Girls
On the other hand, if are we still excusing slavery by Boko Haram because of poverty, then why doesn't much of Southern slavery get the same excuse.

Yes, the NA's are just like the ILLEGALS, coming here for LOVE!!
Jeb Bush is DEAD to me. In fact, Jeb Bush was never alive to me. This stuff is simple. If you're logical, lucid, honest and not a pandering simp.
