Just kidding... maybe. ;)

Stephanie, my older half-sister had breast cancer at eighty and lived to die of another ailment some years later. She had been an absolute beauty in her youth and accepted the breast removal with lighthearted good humor. Best wishes for your mother who obviously raised one heck of a daughter.

90% of the vets experience the VA as a place of endless waits and chaos, while 80% of the staff experience their jobs as a lot of sitting around with nothing to do.

Yes and the Soviet Union ended up with the equivalent of too many left shoes and extreme shortages of nearly everything else. A command economy sends resources to the wrong places and never reacts to the misallocation. Why would the VA being any different?

Captain Hate on the iPad

Ah, I get it, Jane. My experiences growing up were to be called "hon" by women at least a generation older than me. When the younger barmaid called me that I was pleasantly amused, as I was when the cute waitress called me "dude" while making small talk (with Mrs H present lest you get the wrong idea); it didn't hurt the gratuity left.

Captain Hate on the iPad

Losing Ibaka is fatal to OKC; without him in the middle to swat away shots the Spurs can just scurry around the paint at will. Plus having him allows Westbrook to overplay on defense with his quickness to produce easy baskets. Add in Brooks' inability to adjust things for his role players and you have a major disaster.

I have it on the authority of a friend that in Baltimore, at least, the appelation "hon" is a dimin utive of "honorable" and not "honey".

DrJ

Trevor, I get called "hon" out here a lot. None of those who call me that have any idea what "honorable" means. I've not asked, but trust me on this one.

Trevor Saccucci

Point taken, DrJ. Even if the Baltimore interpretation is corrrect, it may only be correct for Baltimore... For my own part, while I seem to remember, perhaps imperfectly, being called hon in Baltimore, I'm usually called Trevor wherever I go.

Captain Hate

Trevor, I was brought into this world in Wimmenz Hospital in Balmer and that part of "honorable" is news to me. I'm far from the ultimate authority, though, but I'll certainly agree that either way no disrespect on the part of the user is intended.

How much does a typical pork belly weigh and what do they cost?

GMax

35 points at the end. Double Whew. Bet OKC is happy to get on the plane and get the hell out of SA. Worst slaughter since the Alamo...

Stephanie

A side of pork belly (1/2 of a total belly) is about 11 lbs average. A sow belly is more poundage, but those are harder to get. The asian farmer's market wanted $100 for a side of belly.

I have a friend that retired from Hormel and he was there the other day to pick up some bacon n stuff (he gets a major discount) and to visit friends and he got me one there and they wouldn't charge him for it (I think they want to see if I can do it) so... he's gonna get a few pounds of the finished product as a thanks. He also got another friend one, too. Also free.

I cut it in half and put each half in it's own cure mix and baggie. You definitely don't want to double em up in a bag as surface curing is what counts.

I've got friends in high/low places. ;)

Skoot

I guess it's late enough for guitar talk:)

I recently bought a cheap Alvarez folk guitar to set here next to the desk because the dog and kids have knocked over my Yamaha so many times I can hardly keep it playable. I just checked the Alvarez website to ogle the Yairi's, and I see that he (Master Luthier Kazou Yairi) has passed away (LUN).

The first time I heard a Yairi, it was resting on Denny Zager's lap (I was fortunate enough to take lessons from him while I was a teen). Incredible tone and beauty. Something to behold in the hands of a player like Denny.

35 points ...

Stephanie Lucky and Good no really dont laugh.

Sorry, the farmers market wanted $100 for a full belly. I've seen a few places on the net to order them and they were quite exorbitant. Need to find a local butcher shop or charcuterie and if possible request it without the skin unless you want to make pork rinds (YUCK). Also, need to make sure you order it uncured as few butchers anticipate their customers to want to do the whole process.

Much as I appreciate O'Keefe's efforts, is it not illegal to record people (or at least to publish such recordings) without their permission? Or is that only for telephone conversations? Not that there were any legal problems for the Carter grandson, but I guess that's different because shut up.

rich@gmu

think there are ways around it. since it was in the Polo Lounge, if the restaurant has signs that people are being recorded, it may suffice for CA law (a ruling from DoT).

Via Iowahawk, a political "resignation" in Oregon follows the pattern: "Effectively immediately" means something a bit different from the common understanding of that term.

While the IRS was sending out questionnaires & holding up conservative groups because of supposed political concerns...the "green" world is allowed to do absolutely anything.

Janet - the districts lie fallow, while the Capitol gorges itself

but I guess that's different because shut up.

Hahahaaahaa! That is funny every time because it is SO true.

I would love our side to start throwing some examples back at the MFMers.

Jane

" is it not illegal to record people (or at least to publish such recordings) without their permission? "

According to O'Keefe it is not illegal if there is no expectation of privacy and since the recording was made in a hotel restaurant that should apply, particularly if Sterling had no expectation of privacy in his bedroom.

But as we all know, there are different standards for conservatives.

jimmyk

Ext, my impression (and limited experience) is that they ask permission if it's specifically of an identifiable individual. But maybe someone more knowledgeable like sbw can comment.

Cecil Turner

. . . is it not illegal to record people (or at least to publish such recordings) without their permission?

IANAL, but I think the main determinant is whether or not a communication is private. If not, then it isn't protected. If it is, consent is required (or it has to fall under some other acceptable aegis, like a court order).

Haven't listened to/watched these, so have no idea whether or not they're supposed to be private. But most of O'Keefe's previous work appeared to me to be clearly unprivileged communication.

Janet - the districts lie fallow, while the Capitol gorges itself

***I'll answer your questions as soon as you find out why Sen. Reid doesn't like Negro dialects***

rich@gmu

jimmyk-

since DoT thinks better when he is paid and I'm a broke college student gratitude probably won't get me far.

what I've found ::

>>>The statute applies to "confidential communications" -- i.e., conversations in which one of the parties has an objectively reasonable expectation that no one is listening in or overhearing the conversation. See Flanagan v. Flanagan, 41 P.3d 575, 576-77, 578-82 (Cal. 2002). A California appellate court has ruled that this statute applies to the use of hidden video cameras to record conversations as well. See California v. Gibbons, 215 Cal. App. 3d 1204 (Cal Ct. App. 1989).

If you are recording someone without their knowledge in a public or semi-public place like a street or restaurant, the person whom you're recording may or may not have "an objectively reasonable expectation that no one is listening in or overhearing the conversation," and the reasonableness of the expectation would depend on the particular factual circumstances. Therefore, you cannot necessarily assume that you are in the clear simply because you are in a public place.<<<

California summary starts on page 6 and the law provides for both criminal and civil penalties. Unless the parties were duped into consent, but I don't know whether that would work as a defense in a civil case. Pretty sure O'Keefe had lawyers look over the storyboards and script but I wouldn't want a civil case in front of a CA judge or jury.

A quote from one of the workers protesting at McDonald's headquarters today.

“I’m here fighting for $15 and a union, so that my path does not become my children’s future,” Melinda Topel, a 43-year-old McDonald’s store employee who makes $7.50 an hour, said in an interview.

Nothing wrong in that quote, right? Just another victim of capitalism trying to bring forth some social justice...

Melinda Topel continued, "Look, let's be honest. My kids are totally going to end up working at a McDonalds, not just as teens, but as their highest occupational achievement, just like me. That's why I am fighting for higher pay for these jobs. For the children. My children."

Best wishes, Steph.

Jane, I got distracted last night with things--here's my answer to your deposition question:
Jane, my recollection is that these committees have their own rules which they pass at the beginning of each session. (In the Reinecke case his Watergate perjury conviction was overruled because I showed the record never established that there was more than one Committee member in the room when he was questioned and, therefore, no proof that its own quorum rules were met.

I can't imagine the rules would allow everyone in to question a deponent.

As for Sarah Pallin--I expect her to say she can see death panels from her front porch. (I can, too.)

That was the underhanded point of my made up quote from mom. The future of her children are only tied to her efforts to get McD's to raise wages if she expects the future of her children includes being 43 and working at McD's.

Why isn't Melinda directing her children to school and the possibility of attending a two year college or a trade training program? Just because she screwed up her life is no reason to predict failure for theirs. There will be less service jobs in the future. Once again the LIV's have a vision that will surely disappoint them in the long run.
