I have no idea why this story about illegal fence-scaling at the Spanish border made it into All The News That Fits The Narrative.
At a Spanish Border, a Coordinated Scramble
By CARLOTTA GALL JULY 23, 2014
MELILLA, Spain — More than 1,000 African migrants rushed toward the high fences topped with razor wire. They were met by the Moroccan police, who, with the support of the Spanish military police and a Spanish helicopter, thwarted their plan to scale the fences and enter Europe through this tiny Spanish enclave that clings to northern Morocco.
...
Worried about a surge in migration, the European Union authorities this year granted Spain 10 million euros, about $13.5 million, to reinforce the fences at Melilla and Ceuta, another Spanish enclave. Spanish officials have now covered them with wire mesh to make them harder to scale, creating an ever more elaborate obstacle course.
They attach hooks to their wrists and screws to their shoes for a better grip. Others climb barefoot. And so the game continues.
Once at the fence — actually three fences, two 20-feet high and a middle one that is slightly lower — it is speed that counts, those who have conquered it say. Some jump from one fence to the next, but often make crashing falls. Most of those interviewed said they climbed up and down each to make it over.
That is an interesting data point to set against the classic "Why bother?" argument against tighter border security, as articulated by. e.g., Bill Richardson:
If we have a 10-foot wall, there’ll be 11-foot ladders going over that wall.
There is a bit more background here, including this:
Spain has demanded more EU money to strengthen its borders as thousands of Africans try to enter Ceuta and Melilla, two fenced-off Spanish cities on Morocco's northern tip which have the European Union's only land borders with Africa.
Last year 4,235 undocumented migrants crossed into the two territories, up 49 percent from 2,841 in 2012, although the figure was 15 percent down on 2001 figures, the interior ministry said in a statement.
The flow of desperate Africans heading to Ceuta and Melilla has surged over the past year, with migrants regularly storming the six-metre-high (20-foot) border fences.
Others try to smuggle themselves past checkpoints hidden in the undercarriages of cars or sail across the strait of Gibraltar to mainland Spain in flimsy inflatable dinghies.
The government said on Tuesday however that the number of undocumented migrants reaching Spanish shores by boat eased by 15 percent overall to 3,237 in 2013.
The number was also down 90.7 percent on 2006 figures when 39,180 reached Spain by boat, the ministry added for context.
Their figures for the year read like a week at the Texas border.
We all grew up reading Anne Frank. I thought we were to "never forget."
Blame the schools. They've substituted lying crap like Rigoberta Menchu and substituted hazy concepts of right and wrong for clear cut ones.

Too true, Captain Hate. I was shocked to find out what is NOT covered in my grandson's lit classes, as well as what is.
I used to go to the elementary school book fair with my grandchildren every year. Scholastic is big on featuring books on Obama, environmental sob stories, and fiction which is questionable in that it promotes vulgarity and ignorance.
I would always steer the grandkids to books that I knew were acceptable, usually hidden in a back corner.
High school students of today have a world view shaped by this indoctrination. I spend a lot of time explaining history that my grandkids (all A students) have never been taught.

Hatred for the Jews really confounds me, and I'm constantly asking people how it came about
It's satanic. Almighty God called out Abram to be the "founding father" of HIS chosen people. Genesis 12:1-3, 4
12 Now the Lord said to Abram,
“Go forth from your country,
And from your relatives
And from your father’s house,
To the land which I will show you;
2 And I will make you a great nation,
And I will bless you,
And make your name great;
And so you shall be a blessing;
3 And I will bless those who bless you,
And the one who curses you I will curse.
And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
4 So Abram went forth as the Lord had spoken to him ..."
The Bible - God's Word - came through the Jews...and the Messiah (Christ in Greek) - the Savior of the world - would come through the Jews.
Truth vs lies.
Good vs evil.

Just to emphasize what a lying sack of _____ Gruber is, here is a tidbit of his remarks from Chrissy's show from three days ago;
If MIT had any principles a very public lie on a very public issue like that would be a firing offense.

Implement the words that Gruber wrote and intended. This is an issue for the states to decide for themselves.

They are using strategies crafted before the internet and phone-cameras were invented.
Seems like we should make better use of this failing on their part.

On the "Hate The Jews" topic, WaPo has a story up now about a CNN Reportette who just got pulled from the Mid East and sent to the Moscow CNN Desk because last week she twittered that Israeli's were "Scum".
The latest casualty: CNN correspondent Diana Magnay, who last week stirred criticism for a tweet about a group of Israelis who were cheering a missile attack on Gaza. Magnay said in her tweet that members of the group had threatened her. “Scum,” she concluded. Amid an outraged reaction, the network apologized, saying Magnay was referring only to the group’s alleged harassment of her, not to its support of the military action. She was quickly reassigned to Moscow.
If you read the WaPo story you find out that the enemy isn't what she said, it is instead Twitter that is to blame, because Twitter (and Social Media) is too easy to use to express one's thoughts: CNN’s Diana Magnay is latest reminder that Twitter can be a journalist’s worst enemy

One question for our attorneys.
If Gruber participated in drafting Barrycare and the defendants [Barry] had knowledge of and/or possession of documents or tapes admitting or expressing Gruber's [and others] position on the ACA they surely would have had to disclose it in discovery, correct?
This Mother Jones article from January 2013, just a few months after the OK AG first filed suit alleging subsidies didn't cover fed exchanges quotes Gruber thusly;
That quote is calling "nutty, etc" the very position he himself was describing in 2012 before the OK suit.
The article also describes this fraud
He apparently did participate in writing it so not only should he be fired but charged with obstruction of justice [I know, I know],
Unless someone can prove he was quoted out of context on that video, which seems pretty tough to do.

Because Twitter reveals what the person is really thinking behind the misleading pretense of objectivity. It also shows what sort of thoughts led to him or her being hired and put in a high exposure position.
Posted by: Captain Hate | July 25, 2014 at 09:08 AM
Ignatz-- Gruber's 2012 and current rantings are probably not part of the case 'Record' of the Halwig and other Exchange Subsidy cases. Meaning, that documentation was not atached to Affidavits in the Summary Judgmant motions, and made subject to rebuttal. But appellate courts can take 'judicial notice' of facts established in the 'public record' like a You Tube video. Gruber's 2012 bragging demolishes the Obamaniacs 'typo' and 'absurd result'arguments. So the only argument the Obamaniacs have is that the black and white words are 'ambiguous' (Orwell would be so proud) and the SCOTUS must resolve that ambuity by looking at the totality of the ACA 'intent'. Well Gruber explains what the intent was, coerce the States to adopt Exchanges. I assume Roberts will be anxious to stick it to the liars.

I find it...not surprising at all that the WaPo feels the pain of these poor beleaguered journalists who are facing repercussions for their loathsome public statements.
I don't recall the WaPo or NYT or anybody else in the MSM feeling bad when a conservative (or even just a non-liberal private citizen who expresses badthink) gets shredded over a tweet or a comment caught on a hot mic, or a comment deliberately recorded without the subject's consent, or a comment deliberately edited to twist its meaning, or a comment the subject didn't even make at all but which "sounded like something she would have said."
In fact, the WaPo and NYT and the rest of the MSM pile on in those situations.
It's almost as if there's a double standard or something...

Ig, I don't mean it doesn't matter--it all matters, and that decision pleased me greatly.
I meant that as far as it quickly changing course of the effects of the ACA, this fall's election could do that (theoretically/hopefully) more quickly than this working its way through the courts. And the poll showing how few people see the ACA as a good to anyone they know--that gives me great hope re:elections.
But yes, it's far more than just "another arrow in the quiver."

A big offender in filling the brains(?) of LiVs is the local news. Bangor is a very small market,so the local stations are training grounds for breathless young reporters trying to make it to the big time. If there is a protest about anything, the usual old hippies and young stoners show up,usually in front the federal building and the cameras are there. Hubby looks down at the federal building from his office,so has a good view of the protest du jour. He will laugh and say,big protest today, three people showed up. Sure enough, the protest will be all over the local news.

My guess, NK, is Gruber will claim he only meant that if the Feds were late in setting up their exchange and the state hadn't set up its own then the taxpayers of that state wouldn't be eligible for a tax credit.
Why he would think that in January 2012 of course is a mystery, but he does mention how the feds were slow in bringing their exchange forward partly to pressure the states.
But of course that pressure would only work if they truly had no intention of setting up a fed exchange.

Imagine if they'd reported WWII that way.
"Yesterday on the Western front, allied forces inflicted 13,000 casualties on the enemy.
Allied losses only amounted to 2200.
Clearly Gen Eisenhower and allied command has lost the moral high ground with these disproportionate numbers and sympathy for the plight of the beleaguered Nazis, surviving in squalid conditions has never been higher. When is enough enough? They only wanted a homeland for themselves and their children from the Atlantic to the Pacific and to utterly annihilate the Jews of the world."

What's important to remember politically about this is if you're a state and you don't set up an exchange, that means your citizens don't get their tax credits -- but your citizens still pay the taxes that support this bill. So you're essentially saying [to] your citizens you're going to pay all the taxes to help all the other states in the country. I hope that that's a blatant enough political reality that states will get their act together and realize there are billions of dollars at stake here in setting up these exchanges. But, you know, once again the politics can get ugly around this.
It's a feature not a bug

He walked 35 miles as the crow flies. He used his Scout training and kept his wits until he was found. He is a charming old guy and has always responded to children who have read the book "Lost on a Mountain in Maine." He feels he owes Maine a debt of thanks and still spends vacations here. Next Wednesday the BEAwill release the first Q2 GDP estimate plus its benchmark revisions to prior years data.
Any guesses as to what type and scope of lies will be involved? I'm going with "it was much worse than previously thought" re the benchmark revisions but I'm having trouble figuring out what type of lies most benefit the maladministration wrt the GDP - shoot very low and revise upwards or pull the same crap they did in Q1?
New home sales plus the Amazon "we lose money on every sale but make it up on volume" earnings report plus the previous Walmart comments all make it clear that PCE still sucks and the postponement of medical visits due to the ACA deductibles is very likely to have continued as well.

Looking for things that annoy me...am I the only one bothered by the growing trend of websites to launch video & sound when we innocently click on a link to read something? Foxnews.com is the worst but the others seem to be following suit. Now they don't always tag the link with a little icon to warn you.
If I wanted to watch TV, I would watch TV.
There. I said it.

Narc,
A point I was trying to make, there are millions of dollars involved, for the countries and the agencies that deal with the "crisis".
BTW, the Anti-trafficking law which has been in effect since 2000 did not create a "crisis" in 2005/114,222 minors, 2006/101,778, 2007/77,778 or 2008/59,578.

Ezra Klein is a childish dope. How did America get to a point when little twit such as Ezra can make a small fortune being... a twit.

Agreed, OL. That plus a 30 second ad to watch a 10 second video that I didn't particularly want to watch anyway. Especially when there's no way to silence it easily other than just closing the page (which I'm happy to do, but it makes the whole thing an annoying waste of time).

New thread on Gruber, no one seems to have noticed.

I noticed but all I have are birther links.

Ditto that, Jimmy. Since I often listen to music through my system, when that video pops up uninvited it blows me away.
Yes, I too immediately exit the page hoping some techie somewhere is compiling stats on how fast links are dropped when they do that.

For those wondering about the resurgence of anti-semitism; resentment and jealousy of the Jews has boiled in Arabian blood for over 4000 years.
"Galatians 4 tells us that Ishmael had been "born according to the flesh" while Isaac had been "born according to the promise". Isaac replaced Ishmael as the favored son and heir. This, of course, made Ishmael jealous and bitter. As a result, he mocked and disdained his half-brother. Eventually the situation became so intolerable that Abraham's wife Sarah demanded that Ishmael and his Egyptian concubine mother, Hagar, be expelled permanently from Abraham's family."
This generational hatred will culminate in the Satanic war against God that will eventually end at Armageddon. Those who align with the haters are in for a rude awakening, to say the least. This has always been a spiritual war - good vs evil. For the Biblical explanation of Ishmael and Isaac down through the centuries to the present, read:

I have no idea what mid century modern is.
Posted by: Sue | July 25, 2014 at 12:25 PM
Lazybusy, that sounds terrific! Thanks!
Sue, midcentury modern is basically 40s-50s-60s modern design including architecture, lighting, decorative arts and furniture.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-century_modern
It is distinguished from "midcentury" decor/design in that some other styles if the period (like Early American/Colonial Revival) are considered "midcentury" but not "midcentury modern."
This is one of the ultimate midcentury modern houses - the Kaufmann House by Richard Neutra in Palm Springs:

And "Danish modern" design (which includes all the Scandinavian countries), is considered classic MCM as well:

No, OL. I almost posted a comment the other day about it. It's especially irritating if you find a link-rich story and open several tabs at once and can't figure out which one the offending racket is coming from.
