The Times recounts Congressional skepticism about Team Obama's latest Iranian deal, and includes this smile:
Asked whether he could assure Congress that the more than $2 million in assets held outside the United States that Iran will have access to under the extension agreement would not be used to aid Hamas, David S. Cohen, the under secretary of the Treasury for terrorism and financial intelligence, said he could not “give you that guarantee.”
Geez, we are unfreezing two million dollars. Where is the evil chortle?

NK,
Since tonto and Harry are traveling west I have no reason at all to drive to Easthampton especially with the traffic on 27. I may make a run over to Greenport just to take the ferries and lunch on Shelter Island.
Strange vibe out here this year. Its busy but rentals are down 43%. My buddy who has a restaurant says there are no more "beautiful" people but there never were those types in Southampton. We were always "old money" but maybe that is what the change is - old money's kids aren't as smart and successful.
My index is this:
Is there a waiting list at Shinnecock, National, Meadow Club and Bathing Corporation? If so, how has it changed?
If no waiting list and they are actively recruiting then we have a problem.

Jimmyk and Rick Santelli come to the same conclusions re GDP. He was just on the tube describing so clearly how he arrived at his number.
He feels the FED will take a look their calculations which will be similar to Jimmyk's and his assessment of FED actions will take that into account on how they proceed forward.

Don't worry DD, when the ObummerCare employer mandate goes into effect, and the BigGov Insurer bailouts are zeroed out in the next Budget by Repub reconciliation so group health insurance rates will really skyrocket, the economy will slide right into recession, all because of glorious ObummerCare. From J. Rubin at the Wapo;
Republicans should prepare a game plan, not merely rule out impeachment (which is the president’s fondest desire). For starters, they and the GOP candidates for 2016 should make clear that any executive order will disappear at the end of Obama’s term and any who step forward for exemptions now may be subject to deportation in 2 1 /2 years. Harsh? No; it’s a sensible deterrent to prevent widespread lawlessness.

The following is an English translation of the Hebrew account of the talk given in the report:
Barack Obama: I demand that Israel agrees to an immediate, unilateral ceasefire and halt all offensive activities, in particular airstrikes.
Benjamin Netanyahu: And what will Israel receive in exchange for a ceasefire?
BO: I believe that Hamas will cease its rocket fire — silence will be met with silence.
BN: Hamas broke all five previous ceasefires. It’s a terrorist organization dedicated to the destruction of Israel.
BO: I repeat and expect Israel to stop all its military activities unilaterally. The pictures of destruction in Gaza distance the world from Israel’s position.
BN: Kerry’s proposal was completely unrealistic and gives Hamas military and diplomatic advantages.
BO: Within a week of the end of Israel’s military activities, Qatar and Turkey will begin negotiations with Hamas based on the 2012 understandings, including Israel’s commitment to removing the siege and restrictions on Gaza.
BN: Qatar and Turkey are the biggest supporters of Hamas. It’s impossible to rely on them to be fair mediators.
BO: I trust Qatar and Turkey. Israel is not in the position that it can choose its mediators.
BN: I protest because Hamas can continue to launch rockets and use tunnels for terror attacks –
BO: (interrupting Netanyahu) The ball’s in Israel’s court, and it must end all its military activities.”

weedavey has to engage in fantasy ala Obama because reality is just too grim.
Take a look at the 10 year market which Santelli always comments upon.
Also fed false propping up of this economy signals a death nell. If these faux numbers bring about a fed removal from the economic scene than hope will spring eternal. Just don't let Obama anywhere near the economy. He provides the death knell for whatever he touches. That exchange is exactly what I would imagine Netanyahu would say to Bammy and the only part missing is the stamping of Obama's feet prior to the full blown temper tantrum.

As a counterfactual, if the US were truly busting a 4% annualized GDP, the Treasury market would be in a free fall and equities would not be far behind. The former would be anticipating higher interest rates and the latter would be repricing due to the coming end of QE. The 10TSY today is all of 2.54%; up from 2.49% yesterday. lyle @ 12:44
The problem is that it's an empty threat. It's basically unenforceable, for a start.
Any attempt to actually carry it out would require depending on data from the Obama/Holder DoJ to identify who would be on the potential deportation list, and if anybody thinks that data will bear any resemblance to reality, I've got some bridges you might like to buy, too.
And even if it was tried, I find it hard to imagine the most conservative administration holding firm in the face of the MSM sob stories that will be broadcast 24/7 - and the churches and other local organizations and individuals that will offer sanctuary to the deportees (who, we will endlessly hear, will have been "part of the fabric of this country, paying taxes and trying to become Americans for years now!").
I don't know what the answer is, but if Zero does an amnesty now, there is no way in hell it's going to be reversed 2.5 years from now.

"any executive order will disappear at the end of Obama’s term"
Only if somebody beats Hillary.
I like Byron York's idea: if the GOP takes the senate, then congress should pass a series of bills vacating a number of them, forcing Obama to veto them. Sets up a nice issue for 2016.
Posted by: Danube on iPad | July 30, 2014 at 01:14 PM
Perhaps Santelli said the economy is *in* traction.
The 4% will be revised, to be sure, but I have no idea how much or in what direction. 1.6% of the 4% was an inventory "correction," but inventories is one of the numbers they more or less make up in this first estimate. They will get more hard data next month. But the real point is that the economy is only about 0.9% above where it was six months ago.
Posted by: jimmyk | July 30, 2014 at 01:15 PM
A better threat than deporting people 2.5 years from now, might be the threat of investigation and prosecution against any federal employees who carry out what are clearly illegal orders by Zero.
Make it clear that the first order of business, should an R be elected President, will be hiring a couple of hundred new U.S. Attorneys who will start work at 8 AM on January 21, 2017, and who will be tasked with one job: prosecuting anyone in the federal government who had any involvement in Obama's illegal amnesty scheme.
Oh, who am I kidding - that won't ever happen, either, although it clearly should.

jimmyk: So true. We all know in their desoeration to put lipstick on a pig they had to quote 4% because a month from now they hope no one notices the revisions. 6 months ago or 6 years ago the scenario is the same. The economy is now not near what it used to be. Fewer people are working and those that are work less hours. No new hiring is happening because of Obamacare and all we have accomplished in the VA scandal is some bureacrat can pick and choose whose =ss he wants to fire for lying and cheating our veterans. The economy was in the crapper in the first quarter because of the weather. So I think it is natural that it has recovered and a lot of the economic activity that was delayed kick started the 2nd quarter. I believe that has now been absorbed.
A lot of big companies are laying off still and it seems that the street is on edge. RE is also very hazy right now. These are not good signs.
And today we will find out if Argentina defaults.
I think there was an improvement in the economy, but only because of the above stated factors. And of course it was overstated. The people who make the pronouncements are congenital liars.

Ummm. A large part of any GDP that is in any way moving the needle in an upward position is the refunds on income taxes that the feds paid during the second quarter and that people went out and quickly spent. Everything from fridges to decking to a/c upgrades to vacations. Any move in the durable goods numbers can be traced to tax refunds. Those have pretty much stopped, so they won't get that bump in Q3.
Watch what is on sale and what is being dangled as loss leaders and you will see the economy is still in the shitter. Also, watch your coupons. I suspect that duringthe exam an investigation would uncover unions overstepped their bounds encouraging staff to break the law. To me that would be sufficient grounds to limit federal unions and require its communications with members to be public.
After all, there is a newly proposed regulation requiring businesses to make their discussions with their attorneys public.
