So, is it Ebola, Ferguson, Mt. Sinjar, the Ukraine, Rick Perry or some new outrage? Just remember, there is little Obama can do - it's beyond his control.

Beaucoup thanks for two things, daddy:
--the name-that-party analysis of the network reports on Perry and Nixon (a tour de force--it should be sent on to some outlet with a louder trumpet); and
--the quotes from Beldar. I felt as though he were speaking directly for me on the principles of constitutional governance, but on the weirditudes of Texas constitutional and statute law I am ignorant, and will have to hope that he is correct.

In this county we are having quite a sheriff's contest. The guy who wanted the MRAP -and the worse events we've ever dealt with around hear is some minor gang shootings- is spending a ton of money for all the programs he wants to get going and is giving the county commissioners all kinds of grief 'needing' more money in his budget.

Steyn makes a few good points but I can't say this is one of them;
You think the smashed and smoldering remains of other businesses might give us a clue why the store guy was a little reluctant to say anything?
I don't like the militarization of the police either but also don't think the methods by which foreign countries manage crime is applicable.
Those countries he cites have foregone their civil liberties in exchange for a seemingly more comfortable life and in fact do have much smaller inner city problems and vastly lower crime rates than we do.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal obtained Clinton's contract and related documents related to a scheduled October 13 speech at a University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Foundation fundraiser.
That's the same week as the salesforce.com conference I mentioned yesterday.
When Bill spoke at the conference a few years ago, after his prepared remarks, he and CEO Benioff sat down on a couple of comfy chairs for a "fireside chat". Imma gonna guess Hillary doesn't do that.
Oh, and Bill was at least 45 minutes late. His flight was delayed or somesuch. But he did get a police escort from SFO to downtown San Fran, so there's that. I never can find it, but I recounted those 45 excrutiating minutes on JOM before. To fill the time, Benioff had entertainer of the week Stevie Wonder come up on stage and chat. Whatever it was Wonder said could have been better summarized by just speaking the lyrics to We Are the World.

--Instead, the Ferguson PD went to a judge to get a court order to make the store owner cough it up--
This doesn't ring true either. The manager isn't necessarily the owner; the owner - or the franchise - may as a matter of policy require an official warrant prior to allowing a non-owner/employee to hand over evidence. That sounds... normal. Having the police get a warrant isn't exactly obstruction or uncooperative or even much of a delay - it's crossing T's/dotting I's.

The story Steyn links also makes no mention of a warrant for the video, or reluctance of owners to hand it over. It does clarify that the original 911 call (while a crime was in progress) came from a customer - presumably the owner/manager/employees were busy what with being robbed.

Doesn't matter whether he says anything or not . . . apparently it was called in by a bystander, and a crime doesn't stop being a crime just because the victim doesn't complain. (If it did, a murder would be darn hard to prosecute). Going to the applicable statute:
I'd suggest it hits it dead-on. I'd also observe an misdemeanor assault, and I strongly suspect an assault against a police officer happened fairly soon afterward.Posted by: Cecil Turner | August 17, 2014 at 10:36 AM

Amy Walter, from the Cook Political Report of which I know nothing, made some pretty good points on the FNS panel about Ukraine. She pointed out that at least 20% don't care about it and suggested that number would be smaller if the domestic situation was better. I think it also points out, perhaps inadvertently, of what a poor job the MFM has done in informing people about it which imo is shamefully bad and misleading.

Cecil,
If we knew what the accomplice's priors were, we could guess as to his motive in generating a fantasy in order to avoid sentencing as a prior or persistent offender. The same would apply to the supersized thug's decision to assault the officer in question prior to attempting to flee.
AG My People's attempt to suppress information probably encompasses prior offenses by the suicide and his accomplice as well as the video of his attempt to make a step towards economic equality.

The police chief overrode Holder because FOIA requests made him respond (and I guess there was no way to erase the video.) Rich posted a NYT piece yesterday. This bit has been bugging me ever since:
I'm skeptical of that poverty rate (NYT doesn't ID which source they used), given the 2010 Census rate was 12.7%.
I'm not adept at these census dataset searches, but I believe part of the difference is due to:
1) likely use of ACS, which isn't the same thing as the decadal census. ACS does lots more data massaging and gets completely different results based on which subset (one yr, 3yr, 5yr) is input into which algorithm and
2) one current ACS output result of 22% appears to have a margin of error of +/- 5%. (That seems pretty big).
