Miss Marple

Going to bed. Night, all.

Dave (in MA)

Miss Marple | August 16, 2014 at 11:13 PM,

They probably have a squad heading here right now:

http://www.montereyherald.com/news/ci_26351584/girl-3-killed-shootout-between-man-police

hit and run

Everyone by now knows that the JOM style guide strongly discourages correction of typos.

That's why I'm not going to correct Miss Marple's "Night, all" to the JOM-approved "Nytol".

Gamom

Oh Lord MM - my house is full of stuff my 2 college kids decided not to take back with them plus - I now have 3 orphan kittens that I agreed to bottle-feed until they were old enough to re-home.....guess what? The rescue can't find them a home (yet) - so I fear I am headed down a path to end up like your neighbor!! I am going right now to throw away all of my old Bailey's and Amaretto bottles that have been lurking under my sink for .......well......too long :)

Captain Hate

Since rich decided to scorch us with some metal tonight, I don't feel bad about linking my girl Charlotte Hug:

Beaucoup thanks for two things, daddy:

--the name-that-party analysis of the network reports on Perry and Nixon (a tour de force--it should be sent on to some outlet with a louder trumpet); and

--the quotes from Beldar. I felt as though he were speaking directly for me on the principles of constitutional governance, but on the weirditudes of Texas constitutional and statute law I am ignorant, and will have to hope that he is correct.

clarice

Patterico does the best job on the Perry indictment..the press missed reporting a key part of Count One which in fact charges Perry with violating the law by vetoing the bill!! Don't miss it if you are interested in this.

Dave (in MA)

Captain, was that a C+P?

Thank you Kermit for the MRAP explanation.

I imagine that buggy isn't cheap to keep in running order altho we have some pretty good mechanics in the area.

In this county we are having quite a sheriff's contest. The guy who wanted the MRAP -and the worse events we've ever dealt with around hear is some minor gang shootings- is spending a ton of money for all the programs he wants to get going and is giving the county commissioners all kinds of grief 'needing' more money in his budget.
I've got my hand in this one just a little.

Late-night troublemakers shift from #Ferguson to curfew-free Dellwood; Store break-in reported

But of course. Have these guys never heard of a Road Trip?

Now that police have cracked down on curfew violators in Ferguson, Missouri, some troublemakers have reportedly congregated in nearby Dellwood, where no curfew restrictions are in place for most of the city.

Miss Marple

Hillary Clinton requires 'presidential suite,' stenographer for speaking engagements

The Las Vegas Review-Journal obtained Clinton's contract and related documents related to a scheduled October 13 speech at a University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Foundation fundraiser. The documents show that Clinton received $225,000 to speak at the fundraiser, a discount from her initial $300,000 asking price. But the fee was only the first of Clinton's many stipulations.

The former Secretary of State insists on staying in the ‘presidential suite’ of a luxury hotel of her staff's choice, with up to five other rooms reserved for her travel aides and advance staff. Clinton also reportedly requires that the Foundation provide a private plane. However, the jet can not be any private plane; only a $39 million, 16-passenger Gulfstream G450 "or larger" will do the job.

“It is agreed that Speaker will be the only person on the stage during her remarks,” reads the contract for the event, which also requires that Clinton have final approval of all moderators or introducers.

Also, according to her standard speaking contract, Clinton has to stay at the event no longer than 90 minutes and will pose for no more than 50 photos with no more than 100 people. There is no press coverage of video or audio taping of her speech allowed, with the only record allowed being made by a stenographer whose transcript is given to Clinton. The paper reports, however, that the stenographer's $1,250 bill will be paid by the UNLV Foundation.

Ignatz

If the contract stipulates she doesn't actually give a speech and there can't be any pictures taken the fee rises to a half million.

clarice

Thanks..MM your remark just fit the theme to a T.

Ignatz

Steyn makes a few good points but I can't say this is one of them;

*NOTE: Several readers have queried my use of the term "shoplifter", insisting that this was a "strongarm robbery", the phrase du jour. It's not clear whether, legally speaking, this was any kind of robbery, in the sense of a prosecutable crime: The store owner did not report any theft and did not volunteer the video as evidence. Instead, the Ferguson PD went to a judge to get a court order to make the store owner cough it up on the grounds that it might contain something useful to them.

You think the smashed and smoldering remains of other businesses might give us a clue why the store guy was a little reluctant to say anything?

I don't like the militarization of the police either but also don't think the methods by which foreign countries manage crime is applicable.
Those countries he cites have foregone their civil liberties in exchange for a seemingly more comfortable life and in fact do have much smaller inner city problems and vastly lower crime rates than we do.

Jeff Dobbs

The Las Vegas Review-Journal obtained Clinton's contract and related documents related to a scheduled October 13 speech at a University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Foundation fundraiser.

That's the same week as the salesforce.com conference I mentioned yesterday.

When Bill spoke at the conference a few years ago, after his prepared remarks, he and CEO Benioff sat down on a couple of comfy chairs for a "fireside chat". Imma gonna guess Hillary doesn't do that.

Oh, and Bill was at least 45 minutes late. His flight was delayed or somesuch. But he did get a police escort from SFO to downtown San Fran, so there's that. I never can find it, but I recounted those 45 excrutiating minutes on JOM before. To fill the time, Benioff had entertainer of the week Stevie Wonder come up on stage and chat. Whatever it was Wonder said could have been better summarized by just speaking the lyrics to We Are the World.

Ignatz

I have a dream, for a first law passed by a GOP congress and pres;
any time some creep celebrity says, whether oral or written, they're leaving the US unless it stops being so (fill in the blank), it is considered a binding contract enforceable by compulsory expulsion if the threat isn't carried out. Repatriation will be considered on a case by case basis, contingent on getting a real job and telling their wives to try slimming that giant ass down a little.

AliceH

The store owner did not report any theft

Not sure what he could mean by that that isn't just wrong.

The police report appears to show the manager called at 11:51pm what was recorded as a "stealing in progress". It also affirms he's "willing to prosecute".

Extraneus

Ext, DuDa only cares when they are shot by a non-black non-thug.

I don't know, Henry. He claims to hang out at truck stops to pick up extra cash and always comes out strongly for these young brutes. I mean he really seems to care.

Just kidding (I think). DublinDave knows politics, and stirring up blacks is just good politics.

Think about it. We may wonder why they do it, but every news outfit is instinctively on board with the strategy. All the civil servants in the DoJ. All the lefty bloggers. And DublinDave.

Whenever an opportunity arises to stir up blacks, regardless of the facts or how many people die in the process, they jump on it. Always.

Clarice,

Wonderful Pieces, as usual. There is a problem in MM's block quote as it displays on my phone. They placed an ad near the bottom of it and the block quote doesn't carry on below it.

AliceH

--Instead, the Ferguson PD went to a judge to get a court order to make the store owner cough it up--

This doesn't ring true either. The manager isn't necessarily the owner; the owner - or the franchise - may as a matter of policy require an official warrant prior to allowing a non-owner/employee to hand over evidence. That sounds... normal. Having the police get a warrant isn't exactly obstruction or uncooperative or even much of a delay - it's crossing T's/dotting I's.

Fox News:

Seven arrested, 1 shot as police use tear gas on protesters defying Ferguson curfew

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that St. Louis Alderman Antonio French, who has taken part in demonstrations all week, told reporters that the police's tactics "were a lot better" than they could have been. French also said that he had attempted to convince people to honor the curfew, but some "didn't want to be told to leave."

French later tweeted, "I can tell you firsthand that some of the people that remained tonight were armed. Were ready for a fight. And wanted to injure police."

Still no mention of Nixon's party affiliation.

Jeff Dobbs

It's not clear whether, legally speaking, this was any kind of robbery, in the sense of a prosecutable crime

In Iraq, captured Yazidi women fear the Islamic State will force them to wed

DAHUK, IRAQ — Hundreds of Yazidi women who were captured by Islamic extremists during their sweep through the town of Sinjar are being incarcerated at scattered locations across northern Iraq in what increasingly looks like a deliberate attempt to co-opt them into service as the wives of fighters.

As the militants with the al-Qaeda-inspired Islamic State surged into the area from surrounding Arab villages two weeks ago, snaring those who had not managed to flee, they showed a marked interest in detaining women, notably the youngest and prettiest, according to witnesses, relatives and in some instances the women themselves.

Women were separated from men, then younger women were separated from older ones and most were shunted off in buses or trucks.

Gee. It's almost as if the Washington Post has never read the Qu'''ran.

There are fourteen thousand blacks in Ferguson. It appears thirteen thousand nine hundred of them obeyed the curfew rather than Field Marshal Shabazz.

It also appears to me the general black population is pretty much in synch with whites in declining the race card described in today's Pieces. The hulking thug Brown is too familiar a figure in too many neighborhoods to elicit much more than a shrug by his death from stupidity.

Hm. Police incident reports says video reviewed (implied night of) and digital copy obtained next day. No mention of warrant required. The story Steyn links also makes no mention of a warrant for the video, or reluctance of owners to hand it over. You think the smashed and smoldering remains of other businesses might give us a clue why the store guy was a little reluctant to say anything?

Doesn't matter whether he says anything or not . . . apparently it was called in by a bystander, and a crime doesn't stop being a crime just because the victim doesn't complain. (If it did, a murder would be darn hard to prosecute). Going to the applicable statute:

569.030. 1. A person commits the crime of robbery in the second degree when he forcibly steals property.

2. Robbery in the second degree is a class B felony.

I'd suggest it hits it dead-on. I'd also observe an misdemeanor assault, and I strongly suspect an assault against a police officer happened fairly soon afterward.

Amy Walter, from the Cook Political Report of which I know nothing, made some pretty good points on the FNS panel about Ukraine. She pointed out that at least 20% don't care about it and suggested that number would be smaller if the domestic situation was better. I think it also points out, perhaps inadvertently, of what a poor job the MFM has done in informing people about it which imo is shamefully bad and misleading.

Rick B

Cecil,

If we knew what the accomplice's priors were, we could guess as to his motive in generating a fantasy in order to avoid sentencing as a prior or persistent offender. The same would apply to the supersized thug's decision to assault the officer in question prior to attempting to flee.

AG My People's attempt to suppress information probably encompasses prior offenses by the suicide and his accomplice as well as the video of his attempt to make a step towards economic equality.

Rich posted a NYT piece yesterday. This bit has been bugging me ever since:

Ferguson’s economic shortcomings reflect the struggles of much of the region. Its median household income of about $37,000 is less than the statewide number, and its poverty level of 22 percent outpaces the state’s by seven percentage points.

I'm skeptical of that poverty rate (NYT doesn't ID which source they used), given the 2010 Census rate was 12.7%.

I'm not adept at these census dataset searches, but I believe part of the difference is due to:
1) likely use of ACS, which isn't the same thing as the decadal census. ACS does lots more data massaging and gets completely different results based on which subset (one yr, 3yr, 5yr) is input into which algorithm and
2) one current ACS output result of 22% appears to have a margin of error of +/- 5%. (That seems pretty big).

Threadkiller

BTW, CH, please note when Bream is hosting ASAP.

It would be much appreciated.

The Ferguson police department wanted to release the video on Thursday; Justice Department asked it not to, believing the video would roil the tense community further fearful that a white lynch mob would summarily execute more angelic honor students in retaliation, and successfully prevented the video's release at that time.

How about that, though. They knew full well that evidence showing that Brown was a thug would let the air out of the situation, so they fought to withhold that evidence in order to stoke the fires. Our own mf'n DoJ.
