An "Are you kidding me" correction in the Times finally catches up to an "Are you kidding me" mistake.
And it only took them two weeks to realize their error! It seems that the Paper of Record had no record of the broad coalition built by George W. Bush for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, including ground troops from more than a dozen nations, when it attempted to explain the difference between the approaches of Bush and Barack Obama on war in Iraq and now Syria. On September 11, the Mark Landler article included this curious sentence: “Unlike Mr. Bush in the Iraq war, Mr. Obama has sought to surround the United States with partners.” Two days later, the Gray Lady issued a correction on a photo credit, but it took the layers of fact-checkers and editors another ten days to issue this correction.
The reporter, Mark Landler, has been with the Times since 1995, was a foreign correspondent, and currently offers a weekly column on, yes, foreign policy. And has this fo-po savant heard the phrase "Coalition of the willing"? Well, yes (mercifully!) - this is from his lead a year ago when Obama was plucking daisy petals about bombing Syria:
By MARK LANDLER
WASHINGTON — A grim-faced secretary of state reading a bill of charges against a rogue Arab leader. The White House promising intelligence that will provide proof about weapons of mass destruction. Frenetic efforts to piece together a coalition of the willing. Breathless news reports about imminent bombing raids.
The days since the deadly chemical weapons attack last week in Syria carry an eerie echo of the tense days leading up to the American-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. Some veterans of that period are expressing qualms that this time, too, the war drums are beating too loudly.
Maybe the last year has been like dog-years for Obama supporters but Mr. Landler's memory seems to be sliding on the downhill side of Age Mountain.
I wasn't ready for Sunday to end.

Matt,
On the flip side, ISIS presented a big risk to Jordan as the likely next target on the caliphate list.
Which brings me to another point that seems to be ignored the name itself. Traditionally, the Caliph is the leader of the Arabs Muslims.
An established caliphate will therefore threaten the legitimacy of the governments of the Arab countries. All the other countries must pay fealty to the Caliph, or be deposed and replaced by someone who will.
I think this is why there is a big push to portray ISIS as non-Islamic as a way to delegitimize any claims on other Arab areas.

Posted by: Jane | September 23, 2014 at 02:29 PM
Community confinement is a condition of probation or supervised release. It involves residence in a halfway house, restitution center, community treatment center, mental health facility, alcohol or drug rehabilitation center, or other community facility. It also includes participation in gainful employment, employment search efforts, vocational training, treatment, community service, educational programs, or similar other facility approved programs during their nonresidential hours. Basically community confinement is imposed as a condition of pre release custody and programming, before serving the last ten percent of the prison sentence. Community confinement is given for a period not exceeding six months.

Usually gainfully employed individuals ( which I am assuming Dinesh is ) are required to pay for their halfway house lodging, room and board. Movements are confined by the judge, he may not cross state lines willy nilly and has to report his location to his probation officer. Might also be restriction on alcohol consumption.
It aint a picnic, but it beats the living hell out of prison.
So which of the two employees ratted Dinesh out? Who else would have known he reimbursed them? The very first guy convicted of this, made illegal donations to Senator Alan Cranston, so this law has been around a long time.
