Michelle has nice arms.

NK

Of course Bush was right in 2007. And thanks to some particularly fine military and political leadership from Petraeus, the Surge worked, and Iraq had a chance to be a successful nation state. Of course the Shia pols who wanted revenge against the sunni more than national success and Obummer screwed that pooch. So here we are. Where we go from here is not so clear... the pooch is that badly screwed. I accept Sandy's expert opinion is correct that 'Iraq' as a unified nation is over, so it seems to me the USA national interest is to slaughter as many ISIS savages as possible, and minimize Mullah influence to Basra and the south.

narciso

you see how well the 'narrative' had circulated, of course, Petraeus did go after the lead Syrian operator, and I'm sure Yglesias wasn't impressed then,

Jane

I have mixed emotions - and that is just so wrong of me. I want our nation to succeed, and I want Obama to be utterly humiliated.

I'm a very bad person.

Well I don't have any confidence in the policy makers, and I'm not sanguine on the partners on the ground, except for the Kurds, I hope it succeeds but I don't see how it can,

I'm failing to see the "mixed emotions" part.

The clip was taken from a 2007 press conference and features Bush warn[ing] that if the U.S. withdrew too early from Iraq, troops would eventually have to return to face a stronger enemy.

“To begin withdrawing before our commanders tell us we are ready … would mean surrendering the future of Iraq to al Qaeda,” Bush said. “It would mean that we’d be risking mass killings on a horrific scale. It would mean we’d allow the terrorists to establish a safe haven in Iraq to replace the one they lost in Afghanistan.”

“It would mean increasing the probability that American troops would have to return…”

“It would mean increasing the probability that American troops would have to return at some later date to confront an enemy that is even more dangerous,” he concluded.

Jane,

President Merde Touch will continue to humiliate himself regardless of our wishes. It's truly the only thing for which he has shown any talent whatsoever. "Success" against the plague of islam is rather doubtful while the oil lasts. The abject failure of the Clinton/Obama Arab Spring initiative seems to have sparked a series of conflicts which are removing Mahometan savages at a relatively brisk clip. If we can aid either or all sides to step up the pace through a random application of air power, it should at least keep the headchoppers focused on existential local concerns rather than extending the range of their depredation.

well we saw the Strigoi infestation back then, the proper amount of uv light, seem to hold them at bay:

Good Morning!

This morning about 05:30 was awoken by that beautiful sound of a Choo Choo Train's Whistle, as its still warm enough to have the windows open and the atmospheric conditions were perfect for magnifying that mournful blast and the soothing rhythm of the rails.

Which of you guys are lucky enough to still hear that soulful sound while lying in bed?

Jeff Dobbs

What Obama said about launching a kinetic military action in Libya:

"To brush aside America's responsibility as a leader and—more profoundly—our responsibilities to our fellow human beings under such circumstances would have been a betrayal of who we are," Obama said. "Some nations may be able to turn a blind eye to atrocities in other countries. The United States of America is different. And as president, I refused to wait for the images of slaughter and mass graves before taking action."

Of course, the images of slaughter and mass graves did nothing to get Obama to live up to his red lines in Syria. Libya-Obama says Syria-Obama's inaction was a betrayal of who we are as a nation.

Anyhoo, now we have ISIS-Obama having waited for the images of American journalists being slaughtered before being forced into action by American outrage and poll results.

Up until that point, he was just planning on turning a blind eye to ISIS atrocities.

Not that that's a betrayal of who he is. It is exactly who he is.

GMax

NK thanks

I suggest we start talking to the progs like they always talk to us.

For example from the NK link this is a direct quote:

Let's bring it down to your level Mr. President so you can understand the concept.

I will take the floor with the assertion that if anyone needs remedial education, it would be Barack Obama and nearly every prog. These teach to the world to sing in perfect harmony types don't even understand human nature.

daddy:

No trains audible here - but we do have a daily 05:30 flight that passes directly overhead that we can hear when the windows are open. The plane sports a logo with which I believe you are very familiar.

Of course, to be literal, the wind direction can alter the plane's approach, so it's not daily that it passes directly overhead. Just predominantly.

So they say they are modeling this campaign, after the one against Al Shahaab, how well lets consider that worked, I was glancing through Morten Storm's memoir (the Danish jihadist who served as a mole in AQAP for PET (Danish intelligence)then MI-6 and ultimately CIA, he reminds us that one of the first strikes was against Ali Nabhan in 2009 by drone, about four years later came the Westgate mall attack, yes Godane, the fellow who went 'Norwegian blue' this week is briefly mentioned, but that was also in that period, back in 2009, it wasn't the drones so much as Storm's reporting that got Awlaki, and his organization is miniscule compared to ISIS, also on page 306, he does mention the Saudi/UK agent, but mostly to show that it was the latter's burning, that forced him out of the organization,

Goodell stipulated that Rice “would have to make sure that we are fully confident he is addressing this issue, clearly he has paid a price for the actions he has already taken,” in order to return to professional football. Goodell spoke to CBS News in an interview that aired Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. He also said the league is giving Rice and his wife the “resources” needed to “help them work through” the issue.

Ted Cruz: ‘Saturday Night Live’ Skits Illegal Under New Campaign Finance Proposal (Video)

“Lorne Michaels could be put in jail under this amendment for making fun of any politician. That is extremely dangerous,” Cruz argued yesterday afternoon — tossing in a Dana Carvey impression to drive home his point. That’s because, Cruz insisted, the bill would give congress the “constitutional authority to prohibit” corporations “from engaging in political speech” and, “NBC, which airs Saturday Night Live, is a corporation.”

“Who can forget, in 2008, Saturday Night Live’s wickedly funny characterization of the Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin?” Cruz reminisced. “Wickedly funny — and also had a profound effect of people’s assessment of Sarah Palin — who is a friend of mine.”

GMax

Network media is just the propaganda division of the Liar Party. Via Newsbuster we learn the count:

It’s no secret that television news has long been addicted to public opinion polls; decades ago, all three broadcast networks decided to partner with an influential newspaper (ABC News with the Washington Post; CBS News with the New York Times; and NBC News with the Wall Street Journal) to sponsor their own regular surveys for use in their political coverage. That’s why it’s so extraordinary that polling news has practically vanished from the Big Three evening newscasts in 2014 as President Obama’s approval ratings have tumbled and the public opposes defining administration policies like ObamaCare. Just last Thursday, for example, Gallup found Obama’s approval rating at a record low of 38 percent, yet none of the three broadcast networks bothered to mention this on their evening or morning newscasts. Such coverage is in stunning contrast to how those same newscasts relentlessly emphasized polls showing bad news for George W. Bush during the same phase of his presidency. Media Research Center analysts reviewed every reference on the ABC, CBS and NBC evening newscasts to public opinion polls from January 1 through August 31, 2014, and from the same time period in 2006. Eight years ago, the networks aired 124 evening news reports which cited public opinion polls about either President Bush’s overall approval rating or his handling of specific policies. In 2014, those same broadcasts produced only nine reports which mentioned public opinion surveys related to President Obama.

One of the few things Amtrak did right 40 yrs ago was listen to a guy who insisted they not install the typical 'horn' like the freight locos that sounds like a sick calf. So Amtrak has Nathan M-5 'whistles' that are actually pleasant to hear.

IDK - it appears Mr. and Mrs. Rice had worked through this just fine.

It's the rest of the world that didn't find 'closure'.

Miss Marple

What I expect tonight: a lot of generalities written so as to sound tough, along with a lot of "plans" which really are much ado about nothing (like the sanctions on Russia).

The MSM will gaze in rapture at this and then tell us how wonderful it is. They will suddenly discover the overwhelming support for hitting ISIS hard and attribute it to a switch in public attitude due to Obama's wonderful speechifying.

And over the next 2 weeks we will find out that he has done NOTHING. We will find out that the weapons for the Kurds are delayed, he's insulted the Poles and the Danes, the Brits will be distracted by him making a pro-Scottish Independence comment, he will snub Tony Abbott, and the Iranians will be swooping in to take land in the guise of fighting ISIS.

Old Lurker

Bob Kraft? Is he the guy that had Aaron Hernandez on his team? Didn't Hernandez have some incidents in college as well? He failed a drug test or something caused him to drop quite low in the draft, 3rd or 4th round. I vaguely remember the Pats did some kind of earn out on his initial bonus too, so they kinda knew he had issues, but of course he could catch the football and was hard to tackle, so they went for it.

NK

Jane/Man Tran-- the one thing Amtrak gets wrong is running a passenger railroad. I implored my wife to train it to Boston, but according to her, Stamford-Boston Back Bay Acela costs more than airfare PLUS all day airport parking AND TOLLS to LaG, and Regular Service takes 6 HOURS, that's about 38MPH. "Bob Kraft? Is he the guy that had Aaron Hernandez on his team?"

Sure. There was no public outcry against Hernandez until the murder allegations, at which point Kraft cut his kite string in a heartbeat. Kraft isn't taking a principled moral stand (he publicly embraced convicted wife-beater Floyd Mayweather in his VIP box). He's anticipating what. PR disaster will confront any team that picks him up. And of course before anyone has the chance, Goodell will have to lift the ban, and his decision will be based entirely on what sort of wind his moist finger detects.

Noemie Emery:

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing,” they saying (often attributed to Edmund Burke) goes, and life has been proving it right. Barack Obama isn’t a bad man, but he is the kind of good man whom every real brute hopes to have drawn as his counter, the one Hitler wanted to face instead of Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt, whom Stalin wanted to face instead of Harry S. Truman, and the one whom the Islamic State and Putin are thrilled to be facing, as he unwinds not only the gains made against Islamist fanatics by both of the Bushes, but those made by Truman and Reagan as well. Can he learn that the failure to act can also be “stupid”? Can he ever begin to be wise?

"Obama isn't a bad man"? Hmmm...

Jack is Back!

jimmyk,

Amtrak owns the track DC to NYC it is still shared and not a dedicated HS track or design. Trackage NYC to Boston is Amtrak, ConnDoT and MBTA (IIRC). Also shared and not designed as HS.

Acela is not even close to what true high speed is like in Europe and Asia. Most HSR in Europe and Asia are on dedicated and designed HS trackage, power and signalling. No sharing. Some sections of TGV Atlantique, for example, use standard SNCF designed ttrack but the rolling stock is TG

My observed problems DC to NY on Acela are threefold.

Increasingly it is not much more reliable than the regional offering so the old "you can always count on every hour on the hour" is less likely to be true;

And lately they are using the airline-type dynamic pricing so that it can now cost a lot more than it used to;

And as my girls tell me, at best it is only 15-20 minutes faster (than regular Amtrak) but for double the money...
