If you look at the study, the aerobic only had better waist circumference difference. Assuming it is true that abdominal fat is the really bad fat, maybe the results aren't so bad for cardio compared to iron. who needs big muscles today anyway? they're usually just for show if you're not a football player

peter

anyone see that Economist cover with JEF's head photoshopped onto Bush's flight-suit body?

NKrebooting

Peter-- at 57yo, and limited fitness time, I concentrate on the one indispensible muscle, and if that leaves me with 1-2" more waist than I had at 21yo, so be it.
BTW-- a GNC Testosterone Advert came up with this Thread; I hope TomM isn't having a mid-life crisis. If I see a new red corvette around town, I'll let JOM know.

"Shouldn't marriage equality mean guys like this can marry themselves?" Ignatz

"Where were you on the night of the 5th?

"Objection your Honor, Mr Mason is badgering the witness.

Mister Mason, are you asking of the witness, who is married to himself, to testify as to where his married self was on the night of the 5th?

"I am your Honor. If we accept the witnesses position that he can be married to himself and therefore does not have to testify against himself as to his whereabouts on the night of the 5th, then the entire legal system of common sense upon which Western Civilization is based upon breaks down."

"Mister Burger, what is the State of California's position on marriages of an individual to themselves?"

Your Honor, (excuse me as I set my doobie down) the State of California recognizes the right of any citizen, illegals and even legal citizens, to be married to any creature upon the Earth that doesn't say "no", ergo the State of California completely backs the witnesses claim to not have to testify by virtue of being married to Lt Tragg, to a tree, or to himself."

"Uhhh..."

Your rebuttal Mister Mason?

"Again I maintain your Honor, that for the State to recognize the marriage of an individual to himself, with all the inherent commonly understood rights of marriage in both a Legal and a Civil sense, would be not simply idiotic, but a collapse of the common sense values and standards upon which Western Civilization and it's Legal foundation are based upon."

"Mister Burger?

The witness, your Honor, is a Democrat!

Mister Mason, Objection sustained!

peter

brilliant, daddy, just brilliant. Raymond Burr was just one of many gay actors whom you'd never suspect of being that way; Richard Deacon (Lumpy's father on Leave it to Beaver) Charles Laughton, John Mahoney (father on Frasier)

NK "one indispensible muscle, and if that leaves me with 1-2"

See, your mother warned you could wear them out.

Our 21 year old nephew had a physical before returning to college last month. My sister-in-law said he was insulted because the doctor told him he wasn't getting enough exercise, even though he does resistance training. He's an intense young man,so he promptly began cardio on the doctor's orders. He's graduating in December from Michigan (EE). He's going to invent something by the age of 25 and become a millionaire. :)

OL-- thank you the free diagnosis Dr. Freud.

Lumpy, I'm divorcing your mother and marrying myself!
----------------------------------

Ward, did you just hear what Fred Rutherford just did?!? He divorced Gwen Rutherford and he's marrying himself!?!

So Fred divorced the old bag and married himself. Brilliant! Good on him.

Excuse me June, did you say something?

FTL

For me (sample size of one), reducing and keeping bodyfat off is best served by resistance + cardio + diet, resistance + diet, diet only, or resistance only (in the listed order). When I say "diet," I mean low-carb.

I find that a cardio-only program plays hell on my appetite, eventually leads to stupid injuries, and makes me susceptible to every bug that goes around.

I discovered Sprint 8 this year, and I have been able to do it regularly since late January.

All that said, a few thoughts on the study:

1. The Times' writeup about the study appears inconsistent with the visible abstract as peter pointed out

2. A subject who was especially sedentary before starting would gain both cardio and resistance benefits from a cardio-only exercise program for most if not all of the twenty-two weeks

3. The diet leg of the study was described as a calories-in/calories-out deficit, and that is the overly simplistic thinking behind the fat-burning cardio myth

Obama Goes To War With Weapons He Scrapped

The military whose budgets he's slashed and weapons systems he opposed is suddenly quite useful.

As the Washington Post reported, the first strikes Monday night included a volley of 47 Tomahawk cruise missiles from two warships, the guided missile destroyer Arleigh Burke and the guided missile cruiser Philippine Sea. They are part of the George H.W. Bush carrier battle group led by the aircraft carrier of the same name.

The problem, as we reported back in March, is that the Tomahawk was slated by Obama to be phased out of the Navy's inventory, with no timely replacement ready. Under his budget proposals, the Navy, which as recently as last year had plans to buy 980 more Tomahawks, the primary cruise missile used throughout the fleet, would see purchases drop from 196 last year to just 100 in 2015. The number will then drop to zero in 2016.

Doing the math, we see that Obama has already consumed in one night of strikes 47% of next year's planned purchases.

Cue a bunch of lib stories about how it'll be ok to spend the money to replenish these weapons.

Dear JOM family:

Last Monday morning, I asked if my mother could be kept in your thoughts and prayers, following the stroke she suffered last Thursday evening.

My brother and I were touched by the outpouring of support from everyone who responded with their best wishes and sympathy. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all of those who responded, and who kept our mother in their thoughts and prayers. We wish we could say "Thank you" to each of you in person.

So, please accept our belated thanks on behalf of our mother, her caregivers, and our entire family. We feel truly blessed to have received such wonderful support.

Our mother has begun to show signs of a recovery, particularly since Tuesday morning. She is now able to open and focus both eyes, recognize loved ones, and squeeze her left-hand fingers to communicate.

However, she is still unable to speak discernibly, and has no movement on her right side below her neck.

I'm sorry to trouble anyone again, but we can still use any support that might assist in her recovery. So, if anyone here has a moment, any prayers for her recovery would be most appreciated. Knowing that she is still being kept in your thoughts and prayers will continue to be a great comfort to us.

We are still hopeful that the power of prayer, and some added JOM prayers, will give her the strength to continue her recovery.

Thanks to everyone, again, for all of your consideration. I am hopeful that we can report back with even better news.

Thank you for the update, Michael.

Keepin' on praying.....

I have a good friend who is still improving from a stroke he had two years ago, Michael, so it might seem slow but you never know how much better a stroke victim will get.

Prayers for Michael and his Mom. The rehab techniques for stroke sufferers had really improved.

Bless you Michael, and your Mom and your family.

Everybody here is praying and pulling for you and please forgive those of us who post stupid stuff without having caught up yet. Cheers, Pat4.

I agree that it would be impossible for Obama to replace Ginsburg with someone as contemptible as she.

‘We Only Whisper It’

Would be in poor form to wish her ill?

Miss Marple

Michael,

I will continue my prayers for your mother. Thanks for the update.

Old Lurker

Does MO have to approve the items to be sold at the bake sale, Peter? How many planes can you buy with sugar free, gluten free cupcakes?

James D.

I agree that it would be impossible for Obama to replace Ginsburg with someone as contemptible as she.

I'm not sure about that. As Elaine said on "Seinfeld", just when you think they can't get any shallower, they find a way to drain a little more water out of the pool.

As contemptible as RBG is, I'd bet there is even worse waiting in the wings should a vacancy open up in the next two years.

Best wishes, Michael.

My prayers for your mother Michael.

Micheal, I'm pretty sure no one will stop their thoughts and prayers anytime soon.

Hang tough. This has got to be hard.

I'm assuming someone has posted that Holder is stepping down.
