I should think the people of Ukraine must be absolutely appalled.

A woman I am seeing is a hard core lefty. She hated Bush. She thinks the tea party are all racist birthers who only complain about government spending as a cover story. She believes that Palin really said she could see Russia from her house. She has Obama bumper stickers all over her SUV. She never disagrees with the NYT editorial page. You know the type.

In recent days, she has taken to telling everyone how INCOMPETENT Obama is. The "no strategy" comment and the endless golf games really tick her off. She is working hard to get her lefty friends to turn on Obama as someone who is not up for the job and checked out of it.

Does this matter? In many ways, no. She still believes that Republicans are evil who pay women less for the same work and shove their religion on people by not buying them birth control pills. She will vote Democratic in every election for every office.

But it is interesting how complete the rejection of him has become.

I'll bet right now the Ukraine wishes it had some serious oil reserves. Or, at least, some blacks...

I was 18 years old when I graduated from high school because my birthday is in January and the deadline was Sept.30th.
The smartest people in my high scholl class were the ones who were 17 when they graduated. My daughter was 17 when she graduated because her birthday is in July. Everyone said she was ready doe kindergarden. If I had to do it over I would have held her back. Socially-not ready.

The global perception of a Superpower President who fails to understand what is and isn't a threat is the Greatest Threat of all.

Practically told Putin that whatever he does is No Big Deal. Putin of course now gets to wonder what actions would become a big deal.

Porch-whenever you check in, it turns out the Dana Center in Austin manages all the Aspen Institute's ed agendas for public schools under a variety of names. That came out when I was researching a 2005 workshop that led to what would get renamed as the Common Core. It's also relevant to ATL hiring the Austin Super.

DrJ

Rats! At least according to the clock it was a tie. :)

I'm in Arlington after a very intense and interesting visit to NSF. The topic of this panel was to look for "transformative" methods to change graduate research and professional training.

At the moment graduate training still follows the apprenticeship model, and turning out clones of one's research advisor is not proving to be that useful these days, particularly when faculty positions are few and the research increasingly is multidisciplinary.

We evaluated about 20 proposals on how this might be changed while still granting a Ph.D. from a degree-granting department. And this had to be combined with cutting-edge research.

Most were not that creative or novel, but a few were really very interesting. They may not apply everywhere, but if they are funded they could lead to a very interesting graduate study course.

One interesting item about the panel members: all could speak and write really, really well, and were grammar snits as extreme as I am. The reviews we wrote were lucid, and should provide good feedback to the proposal submitters.

I had to work late each night, so there was no time to play with my friends here. Maybe next time! That's early November, FWIW.

My story is similar. I started college when I was 16 because of my birthday and some other odd events. It was not a good idea. I was not socially ready as you would say. It all turned out okay but if I had it to do over I would have waited b

Putin has achieved his strategic goal of maintaining Ukraine as a buffer state. He as taken Crimea and Donbas in retaliation for Lagarde's raid on Cyprus and left the EUtopian banks with exposure in Ukraine in a perilous position (Ukraine cannot repay the EUtopians without the Donbas steel). The EUtopians still have Putin's gentle fingers around their throat wrt gas and that won't change any time soon. Germany and the UK have both issued "include me out" statements regarding bombing Syria as part of the President's coalition.

I believe the President should only make remarks in public while mounted on his favorite unicorn in order to demonstrate the full measure of his gravitas.

DrJ:
Missed it by that much.
I agree with Janet. All those questions should have been asked. If preezy gives a jive-ass mocking answer, then inquire as to how serious he is about being a credible, competent CIC. Put the onus of professionalism back on him. Challenge him to say if he was a half-assed stuent and if he enrolled as a foreign exchange stuent for admission to graduate school and for scholarships. If he received scholarships -how much were they worth. These are ORDINARY, easily answered inquiries. If he refuses to answer, ask why the secrecy? Do you have something to hide? If you can't remember your graduation day because you were high.then do you know how you ranked in your high school class? Top 10%? bottom10%?

I've observed this for 40 yrs. I've never seen a clone produce a breakthrough discovery. How many wasted careers pushing string theory? Gorebull Warming? Big Bang? Dark Matter/Energy?

Re edumakashun: my dad passed his 8th grade tests at 10 and never looked back. (Pre-WWI). I was offered to move to 3rd grade at the end of 2nd after coming out of a one-room school in the hills of MT. I passed on the offer 'cause I knew I would be the runt size-wise and already was missing social skills. MT Jr was appointed by Kasich at 17 to Annapolis, but they sent him up to Newport for a year to grow up some more. That gave him two Plebe years and made him a true cynic.

Traditionally that's been a primary use for a post doc. You work with someone in a very different field in which you are interested. In the end you come out with a pretty unique set of skills and interests. That's a pretty decent base.

These days, of course, (multiple) post docs often are used in lieu of a faculty appointment.

Stephanie accidentally OnT?

The most important thing JOMers can do this campaign season is take the class and get approved to be a poll worker.

I've noticed the demographics of the poll workers at my local poll have changed quite substantially in the last 3 election cycles from blue hair l'il ole ladies to twenty something minorities and have no doubt that is the work of the democrats actively recruiting for those positions for nefarious purposes. Hell, it used to be a chore to get them to even vote now they are lining up to be poll workers? Right... tug on my other earlobe.

That is why same day registration is fraud inducing.

Dr J,

Watched the speech of Senator Jeff Sessions last night where he went after FaceBook's Zuckerberg on Immigration.

Senator Sessions had this to say on the subject of Zuckerberg wanting to hire foreign Brainiacs ala Larry Kudlow:

I would pose a question to Mr. Zuckerberg. I read in the news that Facebook is now worth more than $200 billion. Is that not enough money to hire American workers for a change? Your company now employs roughly 7,000 people. Let’s say you want to expand your workforce 10 percent, or hire another 700 workers. Are you claiming you can’t find 700 Americans who would take these jobs if you paid a good wage and decent benefits?

Let me just say one more thing: Facebook has 7,000 workers. Microsoft just laid off 18,000. Why doesn’t Mr. Zuckerberg call his friend Mr. Gates and say: Look, I have to hire a few hundred people; do you have any résumés you can send over here? Maybe I will not have to take somebody from a foreign country for a job an unemployed U.S. citizen might take.

Sessions says we have plenty of available Hi Tech Americans capable of being hired and doing the required work. He thinks the argument that we have to do this hiring of Foreign Workers is a bogus argument. From your experience do you find that to be true?

 Man Tran on iPhone

Thank you, Maryrose.

I had dinner last night with a family that has the biggest boat in our marina. The son and his fiancé are both Stanford engineering grads. This morning he was ragging on an unnamed employee for not doing their job. On twitter. I not so politely told him it was inappropriate for twitter and shut up or fire his employee. He has now banned me from seeing his tweets. That will show me, right? I have no idea who he is to begin with. ::grin::

DrJ

daddy,

I'm in a different field, so I can't speak to Google or Facebook. In mine, there are plenty of Amercians who can do the job. It is just that many are older, and there is a huge age bias in any tech/science business.

The thought is that the company needs all the latest cutting-edge tools, and in fact that's just not the case.

I will say that most graduate schools these days around my field are predominantly filled by Chinese and Indians. There are not many Americans in the fields these days.

Obama is the blind leading the blind Kerry {Climate Change our greatest threat}

That Battle is unending. Local paper reports this: Supreme Court upholds dismissal of youths' climate lawsuit against state

A lawsuit filed against the state by six Alaska children claiming that officials have failed in their obligations to address climate change was rightfully dismissed in 2012, but not for the reasons cited in the lower court’s decision, the state Supreme Court said in a ruling issued on Friday.

The six minor plaintiffs -- children of ages ranging from infancy to their teens -- “do make a good case” that the atmosphere is a public trust and that environmental damage is of public interest, the Supreme Court said. The lower court erred in determining that the public-trust doctrine did not apply

This case was supported by the usual suspects and publicized by NPR. From the story you can see similar cases are ongoing in Oregon and I expect at a Court House near you.

Daddy, on the tech hiring. Tech positions are very specialized. What Facebook (and everyone else) needs are people who understand touch/speak design and programming. Those MS canned do not have those skills. Retraining is expensive when you hire tech know-it-alls, it is simply not worth it to the employer. I was lucky, I found an ex Air Force woman who learned that skill set after leaving the service ... a very productive employee from day one. Trying to find more people with web style mashup skills now. Very few resumes from citizens or even green card holders. My guess is most people with these skills are young and plan to get rich via the App Store.

We had our most difficult parenting moment one night when she informed us that she was the designated driver for her friends (who were already 18). Stephanie,

Keep a paint schedule in a small notebook. Write down the mix number for each room you paint and for special details.

henry and drj,

My new project is designing a STEM lab for our middle school. Today's 8th grader by the time he completes his BS/MS it will be 2025. From NSF data 71% of STEM positions and needs will be in computer technology, 16% biotech, 6% life science, 6% engineering and 3% math.

The big money issue will be based on that do we invest in science stations with sinks, eye wash, safety shower etc. We have a s/o/a computer lab so that is covered. We only raise about $25K at our main fundraiser and that wouldn't even cover the installation or all the new plumbing much less the furniture and STEM kits. But it is something we have to do because that is where the economic future is for the students and the country.

Also doing a lot of research on grant opportunities including NSF. Motorola has a good program but small grants. We have an experienced grant writer in our parish and we are looking at all the foundations out there that support STEM education.

Any ideas?

Thanks Dr J and Henry for the opinions on "Brainiacs."

On the "Ball Jokes" topic, I vaguely recall my old man every once in a great while jokingly singing a slight refrain in his deep southern accent that went like this:

"No balls at all, no balls at all,
She married a man who had no balls at all".

Since the topic was brought up, I just did a google search of that phrase, and one of the links says it is some old song from the 17th Century! Here's a link: Unexpurgated Folk Songs of Men - No Balls At All

My dad was not a rude sort and never cussed except once that I recall in his whole life when he missed a Traffic Exit in DC and exclaimed "Damn", and we kids and Momma were all suddenly petrified and quiet as mice, so I'm guessing maybe he heard it in the War.

Anyhow, if anyone can find any info on the history behind "No Balls At All", I'd be interested in reading it. Makes me wonder if when Francis Scott Key was watching the "Bomb's Bursting in Air..." he didn't at first try to rhyme it to "No Balls at All", instead of that other bawdy English tune "To Anacreon in Heaven."

Nuttiest story I've come across so far today:

Farm volunteer head-butted by musk ox wins $10K settlement

Palmer, Alaska: Four years after an ornery musk ox head-butted a 20-year-old Mormon missionary at a tourist attraction outside Palmer, the young victim has been awarded a $10,000 settlement.

Michael Simkins was originally hoping for $200,000...

Where's Perry mason when you need him?
