Ross Douthat explains why Mitt Romney should not run in 2016:
Yes, it’s true, some events since 2012 have made him look better vis-a-vis Obama than he did during their contest. But he won’t be running against Obama: In a campaign against Hillary Clinton, with her distinctive strengths and coalition-unifying profile, he’d be pretty much the perfect foil, the living, breathing proof that the G.O.P. is so much the party of old rich out-of-touch white guys that they keep … nominating … the same … one.
There is that. But Republicans tend to favor candidates with a national profile who have been around the track - think Nixon, Ford (OK, no track experience), Reagan, Bush 41, Dole, McCain, or Romney. The "unknowns" have been the impressively-credentialed Eisenhower, the impressively-named Bush 43, and the true Bolt from the Blue and impressively-defeated Goldwater.
Republicans want to nominate one of their icons, Eisenhower or Reagan, and how has that been working lately? And by comparison, who are Walker, Christie or Rubio? They might be great campaigners and great Americans, but they don't fit the conventional profile of a Republican nominee. They are actually closer to the Democratic profile, since the Dems routinely seek the next young, charismatic (but unknown!) Kennedy. Think Jimmy Carter, Gary Hart (before he blew up), Dukakis (young and novel for his lack of charisma), Clinton, and of course Obama. Try to forget Humphrey, Mondale, the Gore of '88 who finally ran in 2000, and of course John (Forever Young and Back In 'Nam!) Kerry.
Hmm - by this logic, Scott Walker should be the Dem nominee and Hillarity! should run for the Reps. Strange times.
And since you ask, the most Reaganesque figures on the Republican landscape are Mitt Romney and long-time big-state Governor Rick Perry. I report, you deride.
It'll be Jeb.

His support of Common Core is an absolute dealbreaker.
The harm it will cause (and is already causing) far outweighs any conceivable positives that Jeb might bring to the White House.
And then there's the family name, even if he did come to realize the truth about CC and repent of his support for it. We do not need anymore political dynasties.

Remember, the Left Wing of the Democratic Party hijacked the party years ago and with its allies in the special interest groups and media has been able to maintain its grip on power.

The thing with Jeb and Common Core, and immigration reform too, is that I think he simply does not grasp - and is tempermentally incapable of EVER grasping - how harmful they both are.
He does not - and cannot or will not - see that the progs have poisoned both of those issues (and many others) and are using them as deadly weapons to undermine everything decent or worthwhile about our society and culture.
As long as that's true, he has no business being President. You can't fight your enemy if you're unable to even recognize that they ARE your enemy and are trying to destroy you.

Common Core for history hasn't been approved because what to teach is controversial.
That has not stopped implementations of math and English Language Arts from advocating popular democracy and demeaning what we are -- a republic designed to forestall tyranny of the majority.
Jeb, clear evidence of curricular abuse in implementations, why do you believe that making a child “career and college ready” is an education? Does education belong to the state or to each individual? Why do you prefer centralization that shows the hazard of overcontrol over competitive regional education?
Posted by: sbw | September 26, 2014 at 11:06 AM
" ... because the GOP is worthless to me."
Indeed. And I say this after having been a registered Republican all my adult life, and firmly believing in the relative stability that a strong 2-party system provides in comparison to those systems with multiple parties.
But today's GOP is just Dem-lite, and the only thing they offer is a trip over the cliff at 70 mph instead of full-throttle Thelma & Louise at 100.
Posted by: fdcol63 | September 26, 2014 at 11:07 AM
I was being generous, by the way, in assuming that Jeb doesn't really understand CC (or immigration) and how the progs are using it, and the consequences that will follow.
It's probably just as likely that he gets it perfectly well, and he has no problem with dumbing down the peasants and making them more manipulable to governmental pushing and nudging; and importing a new, more compliant, citizenry to outvote whatever portion of the peasantry doesn't go along with the dumbing-down.

The biggest problem with Romney running again is that he ran a terrible campaign in 2012 and I have no expectation that he would do any different next year.
He was tactically slow and ill-prepared to respond to Democratic attacks. He couldn't connect the dots to show voter how they would benefit from voting for him. His ads were unimaginative. His debate performance(s) were uninspiring. The issues he focused on (and is now getting credit for being 'right') weren't the issues that shifted votes (anyone who was worried about Russia was already not voting for Obama). His attacks (on the 'you didn't build that') were off (instead of defending a relative low number of entrepreneurs, why not portray Obama as attacking everyone who has built a business, built a career, built themselves a nest egg? Many more millions of voters in that group).
So Romney runs again. Is he going to be any more adept than he was? Me thinks not.

"Milton Wolf, the tea party candidate who battled Sen. But there’s a big catch: To win Wolf’s endorsement, Orman must first agree to caucus with the Senate GOP if he were to defeat Roberts in the general election."

NK, if all I had to worry about was my wife and son and myself, I'd have already moved to New Zealand.
I despise the current GOP leadership. I think they are gutless, stupid, feckless, and Statists, like their Dem counterparts, who are more concerned with maintaining their careers as politicians and their own interests, over and above the interests of us, their constituents.
I have lost all faith and confidence in the electoral system, and I believe the only positive change will come after what I see is an inevitable economic meltdown, during which hopefully we will take the opportunity to cleanse ourselves of the poisonous ideology of the Left that destroyed America while we rebuild her.
I wish I had reason to be more hopeful, but I'm not. The Left has succeeded in their pursuit of Antonio Gramsci's incremental strategy of the "long march through the institutions", and I don't see a way to peacefully regain the majority to a center-right polity before things spiral completely out of control.

Poliquin already has a carpetbagger problem,he lived in the 1st District until he decided to run for the open 2nd District seat.
*So*,the actual 1st District R candidate, who doesn't have a chance against Pingree, wasn't invited to the event. Issac Misiuk said he didn't know Boehner was coming to Portland and it would have been nice to have the support. Sure,he's going to be a loser, but this a good example of the leadership in the party being clueless. Why wouldn't they have invited him, just as a matter of party unity?

Based on Greek and Detroit parasites, I'm betting against violent confiscation.

I see a complete economic meltdown, most likely occurring when the Chinese and Russians and others completely succeed in ending the dollar as the world's reserve currency. When that happens, and no one continues to prop up the Fed's spending and printing by buying more of our debt, inflation will skyrocket like in Weimar Germany and the whole American economic system will shutdown.
Or, perhaps facilitated by some well-placed terrorist attacks that target power plants and we experience a cascading effect that shuts down most of our power grid, we'll have disruptions in the normal deliveries of food and supplies, such that we see massive rioting in urban areas that spills into the suburbs and rural areas.
Anarchy and chaos expands, and civil order begins to break down.
The Fed's attempts to impose martial law may succeed in some areas, but there will be reactions to this from others who fear an oppressive Federal government as much as they fear the looting and violence from Urbanites, and who will refuse to live under martial law or herded into FEMA camps.
The US will begin to disintegrate into several regional or multi-state entities, based on the majority political ideology ... but this will only happen after the expelling or "cleansing" of the minority ideology and consolidation of power within these geographic areas. We'll probably see something more along the lines of the Spanish Civil War of the 1930's instead of the American Civil War.
So, I don't see a united America emerging from this ordeal, at least at first.
The states or entities that emerge with a more conservative, traditional belief system and free market drive economies may ultimately coalesce into a new Federal republic based on the First America
Over time, and we'll probably see them succeed and thrive.
We'll see the other Leftist states and regions attempt to create their Peoples Democratic Republics.
Over time, as OPM runs out in those areas, we'll probably see them hemorrhage and convulse into new rounds of civil strife, and refugees from those places will try to escape to the freer areas.
Ultimately, those states will fall as they must. But it will be a long process.

I don't believe at this point we have seen the true Republican candidate for 2016. My problem with Jeb is less the Common Core, which I can understand being misled about. It's the task force report he headed up for Aspen that says knowledge is no longer important and pushes the OECD vision of just Competencies. He would be an advocate of Convergence. The planned society and economy where governments get to steer.
If he is not aware that's where all his advocated policies lead to, he is sloppy. If he does, he is a Statist. Now if our only choices in 2016 are advocates of Statism, I'd prefer one who does not despise this country, but then calling yourself a conservative makes it seem like we are being played.

Porchlight,
Perhaps not in the People's Republic of Austin but holding a majority in the House, soon to be a majority in the Senate and clear majority control of a majority of statehouses and state legislatures indicates some disposition towards GOP candidates on the part of the electorate.
I will grant you completely the fact that the stench from failing Blue Hells poisons the overall atmosphere as they rot out in the OPM Famine but there isn't much doubt the decomposition is going to accelerate. I have no interest in whether Romneycare or CommieCore would have a better shot at beating Hillarycare because I have sincere doubts as to whether any of those three stooges is going to be involved in the '16 matchup. Americans walked through a door last night, and it locked behind them.
Certainly, nothing dire will happen immediately. But the long-term rot will continue unabated, at times slowly and at other times more quickly, until someday .. maybe years in the future .... most of us will recognize that this was indeed a pivotal moment that altered the course of America and our society in such ways that we can never hope to recover.
While the euphoria is now about America having evolved enough to finally elect an African-American as president, the majority of Americans will someday recognize that he wasn't just that, but he was more importantly a Marxist, anti-American, anti-Western, anti-Semitic, black separationist, Muslim jihadi sympathizing, corrupt Chicago politician who loathed the half of himself that was Caucasian.

He was an ass on the first several holes flipping his putter onto his bag in an "and that's how it's done you amateurs" sort of way. Even the euros on Twitter were commenting on the smug (in some delightfully amusing language).
Almost as awesome to watch as the Poulter egg that was laid.

Stephanie-- even better is the fact that Rory Mc is paired with Sergio G, in a EuroBrat team. I know Sergio's an aging brat, but that's even worse. USA looks to be down 1 pt after Friday. Could have been much worse.

henry: Is the 7th Circuit the final word on this voter ID question? It seems so outrageous to me here in Ohio because we have had voter ID for a long time. I can't even get a library card without my driver's license.

maryrose, since the 7th ruled the voter ID is the same as one the the SC approved it should end this round. I expect a new lawsuit & theory to come out of left field* in before the election.
*kinda fits here.

Absolutely could be much worse. At the start this morning it looked as if they might would eek out 2 points on the day. And those being the rookies.
Golf channel had an article the other day about Reed and his aloofness/cockiness and how he isn't very well liked in the locker room. The quote was "the next time he eats lunch with the guys will be the first time." Excuse me, but he's at least putting up the goods.

Talking about Islam:
"The Iranian Ambassador to the UN had just finished giving a speech, and walked out into the lobby of the convention center where he was introduced to a United States Marine Corps General.
As they talked, the Iranian said, "I have just one question about what I have seen in America."
The General said, "Well, is there anything I can do to help?"
The Iranian whispered, "My son watches this show called 'Star Trek' and in it there is... Kirk who is Canadian, Chekhov who is Russian, Scotty who is Scottish, Uhura who is black, and Sulu who is Japanese, but there are NO Muslims. My son is very upset and doesn't understand why there aren't any Iranians, Iraqis, Afghans, Egyptians, Palestinians, Saudis, Syrians, or Pakistanis on 'Star Trek'.
"The General leaned toward the Iranian Ambassador, and whispered in his ear, "That's because it takes place in the future..."

was that George Will, Captain, I think I noted that musing some years ago,
yes, the Carrie Matheson's (bipolar and all)
are few and in between, Showtime was showing a few of the Homeland episodes, they are sparing on that front, but they run Ray Donovan continuously, one of the producer Bromell was the son of a CIA man in Jordan, in the last season, the acting director has recruited a character like Asgheri, the source of the 2007 NIE, dubbed Javani, and
has reinserted him back into the Iranian
regime,

Why do you trust the media to "pick" a candidate for you? Is the GOP that desperate for ideas?
Mitt ran. He lost. His dad, George, also wanted to run. But he lost when he said he "got brainwashed in Vietnam."
Very wealthy family. As if Americans are in search of dynasties.
Reagan wanted to run in 1976. Got the "big block" from the Bush's. And, the Rockefeller's. So what did the GOP get? What the country got: Carter. Who disappointed people big time.
All Mitt Romney is proving now is that his family has money. And, the press is in search of being the instruments of "anointment."
You want to gamble on "magic underwear?" Be my guest.

Pentagon briefing with Hagel and Dempsey to start shortly.
Not sure anything will be learned, but thought I would let people know.
I am still dealing with a crummy virus, so am going to lie down for a while.

Dang-- afternoon is pfft. USA will lose 3 Halve 1 match, finish the day down 2 points. The little EuroBrats pulled out a halve by winning the 18th hole. Not good.
