The Times offers an intriguing bit of history after the Royals win their seventh straight post-season game:
The Royals joined the 1976 Cincinnati Reds and the 2007 Colorado Rockies as the only teams to start the postseason with seven consecutive victories. (The Reds needed only those seven games to capture a championship.) Maybe the Royals are peaking too soon, but they will take their chances.
Obviously the Big Red Machine swept the best of five one round National League playoffs and then caught the Greatest Team Money Was About to Buy in an off year.
But left unmentioned is that the Rockies also played the minimum number of post-season games that season (for a winning team); they swept the first two rounds and in turn were swept by the other northeastern team in the Series.
And lest we forget, that other northeastern team also closed the 2004 playoffs by winning eight straight. Bygones - go, Royals.
The Big Red Machine was a powerhouse of power with a little small ball Petey Rose thrown in to keep you off balance.

TomM-- glad to see you're a baseball fan, in a broad sense. Interesting knock on your 2004 team, who were humiliated by the Saux, after being up 3-0 in the ALCS. BTW, why have the Yanks given former darien resident Cashman a contract extension? They give him $200M+ a year and he can't put together a winner, isn't that like.. bad?

Would the "other northeastern team" be the one that leads the century in titles? I think it just might be.

Let me be the first to point out that the Royals have win ten straught posrseason games, uncluding the lasr three games of the 1985 Series.

Let us not speak of that "other northeastern team" and the horrific events of October, 2004.

The best Globe headline since "More Mush from the Wimp". Too bad it's not real.

Even more interestingly enough, that NEastern team that leads the Majors in World Series titles in the 21st century won all but one game against the Royals this year.

Now, James D., aren't you consoled by that February 3, 2008 event in which a 13-6 fair to middling team from New Jersey eked out a "top of the helmet catch" win over the winningest team in NFL history? Which "top of the helmet catch" win occurred after said 13-6 team's QB was in the grasp of the defense longer than Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr were in each other's grasp in From Here to Eternity? :-)

OK, fair is fair. The '84 49ers and '85 Bears also win 18 during the regular season and playoffs.
