Jim Eagle

Pump this: First!

Frau Miau!

If Beasts and JiB are both first, am I second?

Beasts of England

Second and third, Frau!

Old Lurker

I'm still looking at Amazon Prime for a Taser.

Iggy

It ain't so.

NKreBootDeux

The words 'Thomas Friedman' and 'makes sense' can never appear in the same sentence.

Collapsing oil and gasoline prices (national average $2.80 gal by February?) is an unconditionally good thing for USA consumers and businesses and bad for the Mullahs and Putin. But the cause has nothing to do with Obummer or the Saudis. The end of QE bond buying and the resulting strengthening Dollar and unwinding of speculative 'long' positions in crude futures is leading the market price back to supply/demand fundies. Where do those fundies go? $80?/$75/$70 barrel?

Mad Jack

It's a damn happy accident on the US side of the ledger. Zero and his EPA have been fighting US production. The only guys with an f'n clue are the Saudi's when it comes to this stuff.

NKreBootDeux

OL-- to funny!!

NKreBootDeux

to = too..

Mad Jack

Or what NK said :-)

Beasts of England

I bought all of them, OL!

Dave (in MA)

We have declining oil and natural gas prices, yet the utilities in the Northeast have announced that their customers are about to get a "Necessarily Skyrocket" good and hard, 37 percent worth. I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation involving the Koch Bros. and GMOs.

Extraneus

They'll grasp at any excuse to attribute 3D chess playing to Obama.

Extraneus

Meanwhile, Obama is watching ESPN and playing golf.

Here's an article from the Examiner in 2012 confirming the airborne transmission of Ebola.

narciso

it could as well be a play to bankrupt the Bakken fields, and the ones in Texas, you know the real enemy,

Also consider the collateral impacts of the oil glut in the 80s, the collapse of real estate in the Sunbelt, which precipitated the S&L crisis,
further down the road, the Venezuelan economy also collapsed, leading to Wiley E Chavez down the road,

Old Lurker

Dave, I followed National Grid's request for a 100% increase in electric rates since they are my provider on Nantucket. So now that the increase has been held to 37%, I guess we should, what, be grateful? As Oil, Gas and...Coal...all get cheaper?

Thank a liberal.

NKreBootDeux

MadJack-- I still have fond memories of the 2012 pre-election weekend JOM comment chats about 60s stationwagons (and cars generally)and growing up in those more innocent times. A last bit of optimism before the election day nightmare.

Old Lurker

Narc "Also consider the collateral impacts of the oil glut in the 80s, the collapse of real estate in the Sunbelt, which precipitated the S&L crisis"

One did follow the other as you say, Narc. But truthfully we real estate guys / borrowers, nudged along by stupid Fed Regs and tax changes inflicted most of the damage.

Beasts of England

Another hour or two and the Dow will plummet into the 15,xxx range.

Heck of a job, Brownie!

NKreBootDeux

sorry narciso-- this is all about the money, not Soros schemes. This is the natural conclusion of the Fed's phony baloney QE asset pump for equities and crude and gold. The fed encouraged long positions are unwinding, and oxes are being gored. And of course some GS investors are putting other GS customer 'Muppets' to the financial sword. And the Vampire Squid collects its trading commissions either way-- like Duke & Duke in the movie.

Mad Jack

Dave: All that wind and solar power the Koch Bros. forced the NE Utilities to buy is sure expensive. It's amazing the influence the Koch's have on Devalue and the Mass legislature.

narciso

Correct, OL, and reducing the deductability of real estate interest, was one of those Jenga moves, that would only occur to a Congress critter,

Dave (in MA)

OL, IIRC most NE electricity comes from burning natural gas, with oil a distant second. Maybe the 37% has something to do with funding "renewable energy" or Muslim outreach, or whatever.

Stephanie accidentally OnT?

Where's Duda to praise the stock market as it moves at the speed of light? Oh wait.

NKreBootDeux

The '86 tax reforms. Driven by Reagan philosophically and politically. Bill Bradley was Reagan's hood ornament to get it throught the Dem Senate. Real Estate did fine after '86 thanks to perpetually falling interest rates... and derivative instruments .....and securitization of debt. Niiiice.

Mad Jack

NK: Rides with my Dad to get the "special groceries"! I remember that exchange.

NKreBootDeux

MadJack-- glad it was a fun chat for you guys up in the Commonwealth.

hrtshpdbox

If Friedman says it, it's probably false; every once in a while, a strong dollar and the prospect of a continued strong dollar will actually have the effect it's supposed to (gold hasn't been too pretty either). Much more interesting from today's Times, I think, is the well-sourced and fairly straightforward (for the Times) article about chemical weapons that have been found in Iraq regularly for the last decade. The Times likes to note that the West, long ago, built the weapons for Iraq, as opposed to emphasizing that Iraq did indeed have plenty of WMD after all; in any case, ISIS now controls most of those areas of Iraq and whatever still lies within those areas.
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/10/14/world/middleeast/us-casualties-of-iraq-chemical-weapons.html

Oops, I see the chemical weapons story is covered by a different thread below, my bad.

RickB

"Where do those fundies go?"

The IEA says lower.

Shootin' Putin may well kill Maduros just as OPEC members' budget requirements may kill OPEC. I have reservations about the KSA having entered into any agreement with the Plague Emperor. His Merde Touch is just too contagious.

Interesting.

Iggy

Let us stop and consider for a moment what occurred shortly after the last oil price collapse.

The past may not be prologue but it is often a sequel.
We shall see.

Iggy

--Real Estate did fine after '86 thanks to perpetually falling interest rates...--

Some did and some, as narc and OL point out, did not, because it was effected by substantial tax changes.

Thomas Collins

If lyle or anyone else has already posted on this, sorry for my inattentiveness, but I think that with everything else going on, the big story today is 28 current and former Harvard Law School professors deciding to bring adult thinking to a campus issue.

The genie is out.

Miss Marple

The second healthcare worker diagnosed with Ebola traveled on a Frontier Airlines flight from Cleveland to Dallas Monday, the day before she had a fever.

So, the airline is now contacting all customers who traveled on Flight 1143 on Monday. And the airline has taken the plane out of service.

SO, whose fault is this? The first nurse was NOT in the "high risk" group so I assume this woman wasn't, either. ALL people who had come in contact with Duncan should have been isolated. It is the fault of the CDC that they were not.

Now we have the possibility of 130 people exposed and spread all over the US. Jeez-o-pete!!

Beasts of England

The good news, Steph, is that I don't fly commercial and I'd never go to Cleveland...

Beasts of England

Don't worry, Miss Marple! Obola said it was unlikely to reach our shores and the CDC has protocols in place!

Remain calm!!

Stephanie accidentally OnT?

Emory speaks.

Beasts of England

And everyone she had contact with at the Cleveland airport, DFW, the cab she took to and from both airports, all the people who rode in those cabs, rode in the plane before it was removed from decommissioned, and all the people who interacted with all the people who rode on that aircraft...

Protocols, for the win!

Beasts of England

*or* not *from*

Miss Marple

"Pride goeth before a fall, and a haughty spirit before destruction."

All of this blab about protocols is maddening. I also find it infuriating that healthcare workers who had direct contact with a dying Ebola patient were not put in a high risk group.

So besides the family, who was in the high risk group? And where is the family? Are THEY sick?

The CDC thought they were so smart and had a handle on this. Flights should be stopped. Anyone now in the pool must be isolated. None of this temperature taking on their own.

Dang, I am furious! This was absolutely unnecessary.

Beasts of England

Seriously: what's going to happen when one of these 'low risk' folks attends a college football game?

God save us and protect us. No one else is on the case.

Captain Hate

daddy

I think I just heard on the News that the 2nd Ebola infected health care worker was on a passenger flight from Cleveland to Dallas on Monday night.

Beasts of England

I'm with you 100%, Miss Marple. This is an unprecedented national health emergency and our leaders are AWOL. I can't even comprehend the level of evil in these people's hearts.

matt

Remain calm!! All is well!!!!

Beasts of England

And let's not forget the killer enterovirus, endemic to Central America, that Obola and his lackeys have dispersed to all fifty states!

How many more deaths will it take before there's an open revolt against this stupid mother fucker?

Rob Crawford

As tin-foil as it sounds, I do not believe they are AWOL so much as not caring how many die.

Had Bush behaved like this, the impeachment would have already been completed, down to the first Democrat in the line of succession.

Beasts of England

And I will not apologize for cursing.

Beasts of England

I'm beginning to think you're correct, Rob Crawford.

Stephanie accidentally OnT?

Will Mexico set up their federales on their northern border when latinos head south to avoid Ebola?

Rob Crawford

Boy, I hope yesterday was the day they had the preparedness meeting in Columbus...

Rob Crawford

It would be hilarious if Mexico issued a travel advisory and closed the border. Anyone know the number of Lionel Twain?

Cat

Just what we need now, another hare-brained scam, er, scheme by this incredibly incompetent administration., an embarrassment to slick street-hustlers everywhere.

Jim Eagle

Dave (inMA),

Coal is on a big decline. NG is about 50% of total generation. Nuclear is about 35% and 100% baseload. Some hydro, some petroleum.

Can't be fuel costs but it could be increased load requiring more capex in the form of new plants and retrofitting existing coal to NG.

Public service commission docs shoud tell the whole story.

Iggy

--This is an unprecedented national health emergency...--

While I admit they are handling it very badly and do not dismiss completely the possibility they are handling it badly on purpose, so far not a single American citizen has died on US soil and only one has gotten sick here.

It's not clear how this will play out eventually but I'm thinking various smallpox, flu, cholera etc emergencies where many thousands died serve as yet to be met precedents.

James D.

I asked this three threads ago, but it bears repeating:

If the Obama administration actually WANTED a major ebola outbreak with thousands of American citizens dead...

What would they be doing differently than they are now?

Iggy

Not screening anyone from West Africa, letting symptomatic people move about unimpeded, for starters.

Iggy

JiB,
If one were to look at CA's example one would no doubt uncover Dave's coming increases.

Jim Eagle

Dave,

Those stats are for the Northeast not USA total.

Miss Marple

Iggy, We have a second person who has caught it, another healthcare worker who treated Duncan.

Stephanie accidentally OnT?

Once you get a very deadly virus on your soil, isn't it now a hot spot and more likely to have outbreaks in the future? There is a reason outbreaks recur in the same areas isn't there?

RickB

We know of another worker. What we have is another matter.

daddy

Way behind and haven't caught up, but I see she was on a plane on Monday night, she developed a fever on Tuesday, and was diagnosed and entered the Hospital today, early Wednesday, and the plane has been pulled out of service, and now you've got all those attendants and passengers terrified.

I guess this will be an opportunity to test if the CDC is correct when they say you cannot infect others if you are not showing symptoms.

Economically this is going to clobber the passenger Airline Business, both by loss of passenger's traveling, and by their Union issues. The Unions for the Flight Attendants and for the Aircraft Cleaning Service folks are not going to put up with this. The passenger Pilot Unions will follow along as well. Obama and his CDC morons need to get off their butts immediately or they are going to take one hell of a hit from angry Union members in transportation and HealthCare. Serves him right for being such a disinterested and unconcerned shit.

Iggy

OK, MM, but that still only leaves it, so far, a remote possibility as an unprecedented health emergency.

Rob Crawford

Iggy -- two have gotten sick. Yes, still a low number, but every outbreak starts small. The lack of any treatment beyond "keep them comfortable and hope for the best" puts us back 100 years in our experience of diseases; a second set of cases or cases beyond Dallas will put incredible pressure on the government to do something, and they have been resistant to doing the smart things or admitting mistakes. Wider outbreaks will also damage the economy and a society already losing trust in itself.

I am much more concerned with the utter cluelessness, indifference, and callousness the government has expressed than the actual disease. I think they are susceptible to over reaction, and know for a fact they do not count Americans among their favorite people.

matt

So far the cases have been very isolated and the media has been in overdrive. Crises such as this, though, are self fueling.

The system always fails at the outset of most crises. People and institutions do not have their acts together yet.

There are a lot of very responsible people paying very close attention now, so let's just remain calm and see how this develops. Panic serves no purpose.

Stephanie accidentally OnT?

Could the October surprise be that dems when it gets bad enough they they are gonna run on impeaching Obama?

We demanded it first! - things Harry Reid might say

They can't run any further from this douchebag can they?

Iggy

I don't want my comments to be misunderstood. If there was ever a crew who could make this into an unprecedented health emergency this is it, and it is the first bunch of misfits in office who I could possibly imagine might actually want to make it happen for ideological reasons, although I still have a hard time believing that.

The Democratic Ebola Party doesn't seem like the surest route to electoral or any other kind of success.

Threadkiller

Frontier Airlines is notifying passengers that shared the Air Ebola flight from Dallas as well.

Great.

Marlene

This is very confusing. I thought every person who came in contact with Duncan was in a self imposed quarantine, his family, the healthcare workers, etc. By the way, what happened to his family? Is the 21 day incubation period over yet?

RickB

"The system always fails at the outset of most crises."

Except in Lagos, Nigeria where they got on it like a cat on a June bug because they understood the danger. Not many Liberians are crossing into Nigeria these days.

Eric in Boise

So, do I have this right? One of the health care professionals who had contact with Duncan in Dallas tests positive for Ebola, and yet another one of the workers who also had contact with Duncan is allowed to get on a plane a week or so later? Am I missing something?

I sure as hell hope so.

None of the responsible people have any authority, and those in authority have demonstrated their irresponsibility.

And where's the panic? I'm still getting on a plane Friday morning and going to Disney World.

Is the 21 day incubation period over yet?

The "really big computer was right" The answer is 42.

There are reports that the time period in 1 of 20 cases can be 42 days.

Threadkiller

Happy Birthday Matt!

Iggy

Gotta go do my taxes to ensure the NIH isn't starved of any more funds.

I love the claim the NIH couldn't develop a cure because of budget cuts. It's a variation on the "stop us before we cut the po-lice and fireman and the teachers of our precious children budgets" argument whenever anyone dares to suggest all the illegitimate expenditures for lesbian basket weaving, etc, might not be the best use of public funds.

Miss Marple

Marlene,

Only a select few were put in the mandatory quarantine. Then there was another group who were to be self-monitoring, who were described as "low risk." The nurses were in the "low risk" group! This group was not put on any confinement.

Dr. Smarty Pants who kept saying that you couldn't get this except by contact with body fluids is directly responsible for this. All who came in contact with Duncan should have been put in isolation.

We have not heard of the family lately.

AND, the incubation period for 5% of the cases can be up to 42 days, so 21 days doesn't get you completely out of the woods.

jack is Back!

If they don't make more progress on isolating it then you can kiss Thanksgiving goodby. And forget Halloween.

Rob Crawford

Marlene -- "self imposed" quarantines often aren't. And as I recall, they only said they were "monitoring" people, which apparently involved periodic temperature checks. Not sure if they were self-applied and self-reporting, though.

And, no, the 21 day period hasn't expired. For the family it should be started from their being moved out of the apartment. For hospital employees, I'd start it from Duncan's cremation as a worst-case.

Cat

Gee, I can't imagine how anybody
could misconstrue your intentions.

Iggy

Henry,
I was going to file that story in my "fusion breakthrough" drawer but noticed it was already overflowing. :)

Rob Crawford

I think the last we heard from the family was their appearance with Jesse Jackson.

Obama has cancelled a fundraiser appearance in NJ and is going to hold a "high-level meeting" to discuss how to deal with Ebola.

I don't know about you guys, but this actually makes me MORE nervous.
