The NY Times takes up the catcalling controversy in their Room For Debate feature. They start with a question - "Do We Need a Law Against Catcalling?" and they managed to find an utterly conventional feminist prepared to put her name next to "Yes".
Let's buckle up the Hyperbole Restraints and dig in:
Street Harassment Law Would Restrict Intimidating Behavior
...
I'd propose a law that would prohibit street harassment and would also be consistent with our First Amendment jurisprudence about other kinds of hate speech (cross-burning in Virginia vs. Black) that intimidates, harasses and perpetuates inequality.
Really? From the video, a lot of the "harassment" was along the lines of "good morning". So now "good morning" needs to be put on an equal footing with burning a cross? Good grief.
And since you ask, Clarence Thomas emphasized that the historical associations of cross burning with white-on-black violence put it in a special category. It's only my humble guess but I don't think the Supremes will view "good morning" as having a comparably ghastly history.
The law would prohibit “uninvited harassing speech or actions targeted toward individuals in public spaces on the basis of sex or sexual orientation when done with the intent to intimidate.”
And enforcement will be done by the Amazing Kreskin, deploying his mind-reading skills. Sure, a guy may claim he was just hoping that this was the one-in-a-million girl who responds favorably to "Hey, good-looking", but the ticketing officer will know better.
Almost done:
Even if rarely enforced, the symbolism of a law weighing in on the side of equality would have powerful effects.
Oh, my - I think there is widespread agreement that an easily mocked, sure-to-be-ignored feel-good law that can't be enforced will have powerful effects. But 'powerful' is hardly synonymous with 'beneficial'.
And if Mayor DeBlasio wanted the police to lock up under-employed young ethnic males he shouldn't have ended Stop and Frisk.
My goodness. If someone suggested to this earnest professor that she should only go out in public wearing a burka and escorted by a male spoude, relative or (in exceptional circumstances where acquantance rape is not a concern) friend, well, she would take the vapors and sue whoever made the suggestion for harassment.
But apparently she expects a police escort when she takes to the mean streets, or hopes to see a police-person on every street corner. Or maybe surveillance drones with video and sound recording capability could be deployed over Manhattan. Good luck!
FWIW, even the mostly liberal Times commenters are having a hard time digesting her view.
First?

Jimmy Kimmel is tweeting in defense of Lena Dunham. Should cost him his job.
Posted by: MarkO | November 03, 2014 at 11:12 AM
Lena is twisted, though from what I understand the child sex abuse thing was bogus (originally reported as something she'd done at age 17 to her sister, actually was at age 7). Still, the fact that she writes about it, and more generally thinks that the rest of us find should find her fascinating, is disturbing (whether or not it's true).
Posted by: jimmyk | November 03, 2014 at 11:12 AM
I read about the latest Lena nonsense. She writes a memoir in which she discusses sexually molesting her sister as an infant and toddler, and now she's shocked that people are calling her out on it.
It reminds me of the moment near the end of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" when Harry confronts Professor Lockhart on the fact that pretty much everything he wrote in his memoirs was a lie:
Lockhard: Books can be misleading.

I prefer to ignore the Dunhams of the world. They are toxic pigs.
I do, too. But these toxic pigs have a hugely disproportionate and powerful influence on our culture.
There needs to be a cost to the damage they do. It's a matter between Dunham and her sister and their therapist(s) what actually happened when she was seven years old.
But discussing the topic in a bestselling book, bragging about it (while at the same time covering herself by saying that some portion of the tales in her memoir are untrue or happened to others), serves to normalize it. That is harmful and corrosive and it pushes our culture further into the gutter.
Honestly, everyone involved in her book, and her TV show, ought to go broke. That should be the cost for supporting such damaging, poisonous trash. Her publisher, HBO, the production company of her show, the NYT that gives her such glowing, fawning publicity - all deserve to be run out of business.

If the web site referenced in the NY TImes article excerpted by TM really does combine human (and animal) interest stories with articles with a slant different from prog propaganda, and the site is attracting followers, that's a promising development. I just hope the site is able to attract purple folks as well as red folks. Red has basically ceded this arena to women's magazines, and sites such as Your Tango and Café Mom. It would be good to see some red tinged diversity in this arena.
As a stalwart follower of Plato, I take pop culture, including the cuddly side of it, very seriously. Music, human interest stories, articles on relationships and the like shape minds, often more effectively than reasoned discourse.
If any JOMers have influence with the Adelsons or Kochs of the world, please encourage them to visit this website and, if it continues to operate in the manner described by TM, convince them to become a sugar daddy to the site.

Maybe Jensen is avoiding linking himself to these on his site for a reason? I do not trust the guy, but I do know he usually tries hard on the last poll to get it right. For the record, he did miss badly on the Walker recall on his last poll. It is not something I would like*, so is probably headed for wild success in the consumer markets. On the corporate side it makes a lot of sense and saves big bucks. That seems a sure bet to me.
*if you look at what Old Lurker reports using -- links to his thermostats and security cameras, same with the "eHealth" that just got loaded onto all iPhones with 8.0 -- it strikes me as the kind of thing the government would take over for its own purposes in a "smart city" form of tyranny. This potential will cause the government (and crony big tech) to push the concept for all its worth. No thanks.

Democrat donor out on the ledge. There is going to be a lot more of this, pass the popcorn. Heckler in Colorado for Udall is millionaire donor:

GMax-wait until you see steam coming off the ocean because of the frigid temps.
I saw it years ago when temp was about 15 degrees down there.
By the way don;t you just love the sunsets from now and for the next 2 months or so when the sun is the furtherest south and the angle tens to make the water translucent at sunset?

I don't want the progs to be able to find any positive outcomes for their side.
I want their thinking buried so the MSM will have to naval gaze for a long time.
or
Crush your enemies. See them driven before you. Hear the lamentations of their women.
I'd love a Conan election outcome.
I'll forgo the next Biloxi trip to pay to see Pelosi, Washerwoman and MichelleO wailing and nashing their teeth. Since the entire dem production team is a bunch of Nancy boy types, the entire entourage wailing and nashing would be awesome.

Great counterpoint at the Federalist to all the PC, faux outrage at the viral video of the girl being "harassed" on NY city streets.

don;t you just love the sunsets
With a drink in my hand at Bud & Alleys or Harry Ts

Here is some news that will make most of us feel good.

At least it did me.

I agree with that Henry. As soon as smart meters landed in Potomac and Nantucket, even though I opted out of their "let us control your thermostat plan at a lower rate", I saw the handwriting on the wall in both MA and MD. Since I am, as I have said here, a "make it 72F where I am sitting regardless of the conditions outside" guy and willing to pay for it, I put generators at both places which are wired to bypass any control they can come up with. F em.

henry-taking it over is precisely what that article says and it ties to the FuturICT research I did a while back. The cronyist tech companies and governments and foundations all insist it can be used to plan now for a needs based economy.
The links in my most recent post involving IFTF actually mention in a quote I did not cite that much of the global economy of the future would center around healthcare.
All the ed initiatives assume data will be used to "solve problems" as if money is infinite.
The fact that the article is CFR means it ties tightly to the Big Oil F's sponsorship of Metropolitanism. The ultimate tyranny vision.

Baseball Crank posts a reminder:
Since 2002, no Senate incumbent <45 in final RCP has won re-election. Begich, Pryor, M.Udall, Hagan & Roberts all below 45.

rse, ask some of the water customers/employees in Atlanta what they think about the smart meters. Don't you want to get a $1,000 water bill cause it was 'doing it wrong" and on a fixed income a sudden massive water bill is just so easy to pay...
They were pushing those through the EMC, but they got very few takers. Gas and electricity smart meters at the EMC and the water meters through the our county. I declined on both. One unmentioned issue with the meters is they have a tendency to freeze up in really cold weather. Smart install in the north :eyeroll:.

I wonder if Tom Harkin likes his Senators a little more chubby than Joni Ernst?
